From the townships of apartheid to the openingconcert at the World Cup, South African musichas travelled a unique road. This double-billpresents two of the country’s greatest musicalexports and their songs of resistance. The jazzicon Hugh Masekela returns to Britain with hisband, in the company of the three doyennes ofsoulful Zulu jazz, The Mahotella Queens.

Hugh Masekela is one of jazz’s greatest hornplayers. He was the first African to top theAmerican singles charts, with 1968’s GrazingIn The Grass, which he played at the Word Cupconcert, and lent his trumpet sound to theGraceland tour with Paul Simon. He has beenan outspoken figure in the struggle for civil rightson both sides of the Atlantic and spent his careerpushing musical boundaries, adopting townshipjazz, funk and hip-hop into his music. He isperhaps South Africa’s most enduring musicalambassador.

Although The Mahotella Queens had their firsthit in 1964, few voices sound fresher than thoseof Hilda Tloubatla, Nobesuthu Mbadu andMildred Mangxola, the three queens of mbaqanga, the soulful Zulu jazz that dominated townshipmusic in the apartheid era. From the early 1970sthey were one of South Africa’s foremost acts. After apartheid, they become one of the country’smost important cultural exports, standardbearers for the rainbow nation.
