This elegant five-bedroom home, which is set in landscaped gardens with a secure gated carriage driveway and a double garage, is located in the sought-after residential area of Blundlesands.

“Back in 1999,” explains Patrick, “my late wife, Jane, saw the potential in what was then a small 1930s house that had been looked after but left unaltered for 34 years – it even had an old ‘motor car home’ and an Anderson shelter!”

“It was very much Jane’s project,” continues Patrick, “and she wanted to bring light and brightness to the house. The original narrow, dark entrance had the staircase on the left – we turned the staircase carcase round into its current position, removing the bathroom and WC above to create a spacious landing lit by a large new window. The new WC underneath was originally a butler’s pantry. We made the lounge lighter by adding the bay to the rear. The dining room is unchanged; but the kitchen has been greatly enlarged. The conservatory, the library, the study and the morning room were all added by us. The first floor was extended and remodelled to provide a large master bedroom with a dressing room and en-suite facilities, an en-suite guest room, two further bedrooms and a shower room. We also added the porch and the double garage, finally moving into the house on completion of the building work in 2001. Then we had all the decorating and garden landscaping to do!”

“Our mantra was to be conscious of what the house demanded, not necessarily the cheaper option. We restored the original Colombian pine parquet floors in the lounge and the dining room. We also endeavoured to ensure continuity of design: the new skirting matches the door casings; the ash balustrade on the staircase matches the oak radiator covers and pillars of the porch – all were made by a local skilled craftsman. The coving and the ceiling roses were installed by the long-established company that did St George’s Hall in Liverpool.”

“The only major changes since have been the conversion in 2009/10 of the loft to provide a cinema room, additional bedroom and bathroom,” adds Patrick, “and the updating of the kitchen, to make better use of the space and add more light by creating a double doorway to the garden. More recently, an area of decking was replaced by the stone-built orangery – the adjoining patio was re-laid with Indian stone at the same time.”

“I shall be moving with happy memories of the efforts we made to fulfil Jane’s ambitions for the house,” concludes Patrick. “It’s been a wonderful social house – it lends itself to that – we’ve had friends to stay for the Aintree Grand National and we had a huge party with 120 guests for Jane’s 50th birthday. The house is also in a great position, within 5 minutes’ walk of the railway station, and within easy reach of local shops, the beach, the city, the countryside, a bevy of good schools and a wide choice of golf courses!”
