INTRODUCTIONThe success of last year’s inaugural Liverpool International Music Festival surpassed all expectations. This city’s unique place in the music world meant an eclectic and diverse range of artists couldn’t wait to come and perform in Liverpool.

This year’s programme takes LIMF to a whole new level, and I am delighted with the line-up. The LIMF Summer Jam is especially important as we use the beautiful surroundings of one of the country’s best parks into a vibrant and exciting free music event for both the people of Liverpool and visitors to the city.

What happens at LIMF is unique and underlies my ambition to place Liverpool at the very top of international destinations. So come and feel the passion of this city, its music and its people – and have a great time!

Mayor Joe Anderson

Liverpool is no ordinary musical city and I believe that Liverpool International Music Festival is no ordinary music festival. At its core, the festival is a series of diverse and eclectic music events and performances that reflect the City’s ever evolving relationship with music.

2014’s calendar of events is a massive development and huge step towards our proposed destination. We have built on last year’s successful Sefton Park element and developed LIMF Summer Jam. As in 2013 we will have 4 days of free outdoor music concerts at one of the nation’s most awe-inspiring parks featuring some of the leading and most innovative artists in the world. However this year we have also added two more areas of music and loads of extra activities to further show the breadth and depth of our music palette. Alongside this we have the LIMF Commissions, which are a series of four musical projects and performances focused on the theme of World Firsts by Collaboration. I am certain that all four, which are led by a number of inspiring artistic directors, will literally raise the bar and will be defining moments within our this year’s programme.

To kick off the festivities we have a number of partnership events with the likes of MTV, Boiler Room, FACT and many more, which are elevating LIMF 2014 to even higher heights. Very exciting times for us all here and hopefully you too.

I hope that within this year’s LIMF programme you find some events, projects or/and performances that inspire, entertain or awe you. If that occurs we have done our job!

FACT AND LIMF PRESENTS RUTHERFORD CHANG’S ‘WE BUY WHITE ALBUMS’FACT LIVERPOOL 15 AUGUST - 31 AUGUSTFREERutherford Chang’s record collection is deliberately repetitive. He amasses copies of the Beatles’ seminal - though minimally artworked - ‘White Album’ (actually only officially ever called ‘The Beatles’ - the band’s ninth studio album, released in 1968). Chang’s travelling record store has racks crammed with hundreds of the album’s first pressing: each cover unique, thanks to its original owner’s scribbles, and the dints and grime accumulated over almost 50 years. In this installation, Chang showcases this variation on a theme, the joy of vinyl, and the subtle way we turn the mass-produced into the intensely personal. As well as the exhibition, Chang made a recording for the 45th anniversary of the album’s release - an overlaid soundscape of 100 albums, creating an echoing facsimile of songs that are at once familiar and strange - as variations in the pressings make the recordings slowly move out of synch.

The project is ongoing - so, should you wish to sell your copy of the White Album, we’re sure Rutherford would love to meet you.

The list of confirmed performers include Boy George (full live set), Tim Burgess, Hollie Cook,Bernard Butler, Pete Wylie, Mark King, Mary Epworth and Natalie McCool. The event will behosted by BBC Radio 6 Music’s Chris Hawkins, with DJ sets by BBC Radio Merseyside’s Dave Monks.

Sense of Sound’s new commission for LIMF 2014 is an exciting collaboration between singers and an ensemble of beatboxers (led by Shlomo). It will be a dramatic mix of sound and visuals, lighting, voice and beats.

Its starting point was a chance conversation with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s cellist, Georgina Aasgard. Her cello was made in 1751.

MIGRATION MUSIC invites the audience to travel through significant moments in the history of music. The work takes Bach’s Cello Suite no.1 as its inspiration, and reinterprets it through filters of jazz, dance, hip hop and other musical genres. The show will honour composers, musicians and songwriters from the 18th century right through to the 21st.

Using modern technology to replicate traditional instruments, the cast of 30 singers and 10 beatbox artists will use only their voices to create a thought provoking musical experience.

SEVEN STREETS’YOU ARE HERE

PALM HOUSE, SEFTON PARK23 AUGUST20.00£5A century ago Europe, and the World, erupted into brutal conflict. The spark? The pull of home and heart. You Are Here will bring musicians from the triple entente together - The United Kingdom, France and Russia - to investigate their experiences of what home means to them.

What is this thing called home? Does it still tug at our sense of identity? The collaboration explores how the ground beneath our feet can shape the music we create. With Liverpool’s Bill Ryder-Jones and KOF working with French band, Moongai, and Russia’s Noonwraith and Archngl, You Are Here promises a night of boundary-crossing brilliance.

The project is artistically directed by David Lloyd: Editor of Liverpool’s best-read indie title, Seven Streets.

KAZIMIER 29 AUGUST 20.00FREEAn exploration of the often overlooked importance of minor characters within literature, theatre and film. The project will expose the hitherto untold stories of the bit parts, the unnamed roles, the small cogs in the machine which are nonetheless essential to its working. Every apparently inconsequential player has within them an entire life-story waiting to be heard.East India Youth, Forest Swords, The Lone Taxidermist, English Heretic, Ten Mouth Electron and Luke Abbott will each create a new piece of work based on the imagined life of a different minor character. The results will be released digitally through the Quietus record label and be entirely free to download.

The night promises to be a multi-sensory exploration of classic film and literature as created by some of the UK’s most promising young musical artists – and the whole night will be completely in character for the high standard of talent involved.

The live event and exhibition will take place at the Kazimier on 29th August 2014.

This project would not be taking place without the kind support of Merseyside Arts Foundation, Drowned in Sound, Horse, Samizdat and Parr St Studios.

STANLEY PARK & SEFTON PARK

The Stanley Park and Sefton Park bandstands have been popular performance sites since the Victorian era. The recent refurbishment of the beautiful Isla Gladstone Conservatory at Stanley Park has led to a return to greatness for this historic site. Sefton Park’s bandstand legacy runs deep, with a well-founded legend that it was the inspiration behind the song Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, written in the 60’s by a couple of locals.
