VanPhuong Nguyen is a 7th Grader in 8838C, and has been in VEX robotics for almost 3 years, with 2 being in VEX IQ. The VEX Robotics program inspired

her to follow her aspirations in STEM. The Girl Powered initiative has truly given her

an opportunity to live her dreams.

Grace Lin has been in the VEX program for 3 years,

with 2 of those years being in VEX IQ. Seeing all the girls

a th 2017 VEX IQ Worlds Competition has motivated her to continue her dream and not be limited by who she’s supposed to be, and

rather to be who she wants to be.

In 8838C Voyage, we believe that the key to a successful team is not about winning every match and receiving multiple awards, but rather being able to be a team who will always support and respect each other. Our voyage so far this season has been extremely successful and memorable. We hope that the rest of the season will bring more luck and laughter to our team.

It’s what’s on the inside that counts“Girl Powered”. To us in 8838C Voyage, being Girl Powered means being able to accept and support each other for who we are, no matter what gender, age, etc. we are. Girl Powered is also an opportunity to encourage both genders, especially females, to be able to reach for the stars and live their dreams. Girl Powered is something that can be used to motivate people of all kinds, and to let them know that it’s the passion for STEM from the inside that matters.

Every moment mattersWhether we’re celebrating a finally clean table, having a class party, or rewarding our hard work with popsicles, our team is always finding to time to have fun together. We want to be able to interact together as a team and not be bound by the differences between us.

In The GameWe, 8838C Voyage, all

agree that new opportunities should always be available to each and every member

on our team. There is no specific role that each of us have, other than our driver.

All 6 of us are given the chance to try all the different jobs and see which ones we

are most comfortable and compatible with.

Woodie FlowersHelping to pave the way for a better future.

Woodie Flowers has dedicated his whole lifetime to introducing the world to the magic of STEM. Without him, competitive robotics wouldn’t have existed for boys, and most definitely not for girls. Ever since hearing his inspirational speech at the 2017 VEX Worlds Competition, he continues to remind us that with the future in our generation’s hands, anything is possible.

Throughout this season, we have frequently mentored the 5th and 4th graders in the VEX IQ program at our school. We give them tips and suggestions based off of our own past experiences. By educating future generations, we will help to pave the pathway for both girls and boys in STEM. We hope to inspire the younger generations to live their dreams, no matter how impossible they may seem.

Finding Our VoiceAs females in the STEAM field, we are not afraid to speak from both our hearts and minds. We openly ask questions and pitch in our ideas to the team. Our voices have been heard and will continue to be heard. Being a female in STEAM is nothing to be ashamed of. Robotics is our dream and nothing will stop us from achieving it. We believe the barrier between genders only exist for us to break it down- just wait and see.
