On board vessels

On board livestock vessels, all animals have constant access to food and water.

They travel in pens where they have room to move around and lie down.

Each deck is ventilated, and the temperature is monitored.

Qualified stockmen and crew ensure careful sheep management during the voyage.

On longer voyages to the Middle East sheep are also cared for by Australian Quarantine Inspection Service accredited veterinarians.

Live sheep exports are an important part of Australia’s agriculture trade, providing a alternative market for Australian producers and underpinning the domestic sheep trade.

When sheep arrive in the Middle East they walk from the ship and are transported in livestock trucks to feedlots.

The feedlots are shaded and all animals have access to food and water.

In most cases, livestock are then transported to local abattoirs for processing.

In the Middle East and Asia our animals are cared for by the live sheep trade Australian animal welfare experts.

These animal welfare experts are based in each region to make sure our animals are well looked after and provide training in sheep husbandry and sheep management.

They work with the sheep industry, local governments and importers to continue to improve the welfare of Australian animals.

They train locals in sheep husbandry and how to work with Australian animals.

The ‘sheep talker’ moves animals without noise or stress.

Local stockmen are taught how to move sheep using eye contact and body positioning.

Training sessions are very important in ensuring the new sheep management techniques are properly learnt and used.
