The music isn't just in the clubs, concert halls, outdoor stages andbackyards this SXSW week. It's also on the silver screen. Below are somemusic documentaries of note that delve into styles and soundsunderneath the pop music radar. • "All The Labor"(http://www.highplainsfilms.org/hpf/films/all_the_labor) – Making itsworld premiere is Doug Hawes-Davis's inside look at Austin's own TheGourds. The award-winning nature documentarian from the Big Skycountry of Montana was inspired by his fandom for and friendship withthe near-impossible-to-categorize roots music band to create thisbeautifully shot as well as intimate and insightful look at a group belovedby its cult following. And in the process reveal the unique and compellingcharms of The Gourds and unlock why the group continues to play some150 shows a year even if large-scale success remains elusive. • "This Ain't No Mouse Music!" (http://nomousemusic.com/) –Chris Strachwitz of Arhoolie Records has spent the last 50-plus yearscollecting one of the richest repositories of deep indigenous Americanmusic on his label. • "Bayou Maharajah" (http://bayoumaharajah.com/) – Anotherworld premiere that tells the troubled story of the man Dr. John calls"the best black, gay, one-eyed junkie piano genius New Orleans has everproduced." New Orleans filmmaker Lily Kleber took to Kickstarter toraise funds to preserve and showcase the legacy of a pianist who "couldcombine classic New Orleans rhythm & blues, classical music, pop tunes,waltzes, just anything that came into his head," explains music criticBunny Matthews. Despite inspiring famed musicians like Harry ConnickJr. and recording with luminaries from the pop, rock, soul and R&Bworlds, Booker remains relatively unknown to the general public. "BayouMaharajah" seeks to remedy that with its portrait of this eccentricmusician of astounding ability and mystical vision.
