Imagine not having control of your body. You begin twitching, pass out or have episodes where you don’t remember spans of time. These episodes can happen without warning. They can affect your life; interfere with your job, your relationships and even your ability to lead a normal life. For people with epilepsy, this is all too common.

Palmetto General Hospital has a new, advanced Epilepsy Program designed to monitor, diagnose and treat the disease so those affected can have control of their lives again. Palmetto General Hospital is one of the only facilitates in West Miami-Dade County to provide this type of comprehensive program.

Explaining Epilepsy“I like to say epilepsy is like an electrical thunderstorm in the brain,” says Dr. Shaun Smart, epileptologist and medical director of the Epilepsy Program at Palmetto General Hospital. “It turns on different areas of the brain so the patient loses control of his or her body. It’s like a switch going on and off.”There are actually different types of seizures. A focal seizure occurs in a specific part of the brain, while a generalized seizure occurs throughout the whole brain.

How the Program WorksThe Epilepsy Program at Palmetto General Hospital offers some of the most advanced technology to monitor, diagnose and treat epilepsy. “We have the ability to monitor patients for up to 24 hours or more. This helps us identify abnormal brain rhythms in order to determine if it is epilepsy, and if so, the type of the disease,” says Dr. Monica Mejia-Acosta, neurologist at Palmetto General Hospital.

What makes the program so unique is that most facilitates only have the ability to monitor patients for 30 minutes. Often, this is not enough time for a proper diagnosis as seizures can be intermittent. At Palmetto General Hospital, monitoring can occur up to 72 hours.

“We have a specialized room with a built-in EEG system and cameras,” adds Dr. Smart. “We are able to watch patients and record their brain activity during a seizure. We can also determine if they actually do have epilepsy or if they have another condition causing seizures.”

Another component of the program is to identify people who may be candidates for 24-hour or more monitoring. These could include patients experiencing seizures or those with unexplained

symptoms. Often people are having episodes, such as passing out or uncontrollable shaking and they don’t identify it as epilepsy. Other potential candidates might be those who are already diagnosed with epilepsy that is not well controlled.

Once a proper diagnosis is determined, a specialized treatment plan will be developed. In many cases, medication is recommended. The kind of medication depends on the type of seizure. For instance, some are better for focal seizures, but those same medications can make generalized seizures worse. Other factors include age, sex, side effects and other medications a person might be taking.

Aside from diagnosis and treatment, Palmetto General Hospital also offers lifestyle counseling to help patients learn how to cope with their condition and prevent accidents or injury,” Dr. Mejia-Acosta says. “We also provide psychological counseling as seizures can lead to depression and other mental health issues.”

“This is a truly comprehensive program that treats all aspects of epilepsy and its complications,” Dr. Smart says. “We’re continually making new advances at Palmetto General Hospital, and our goal is develop a program that rivals any in this area.”

Who is Eligible for the Epilepsy Program?Patients need a referral to be considered for the program. “If a primary physician suspects epilepsy, the patient would then see a neurologist who may recommend that person to our program,” says Dr. Mejia-Acosta. “Patients must have a referral from their doctor.”

If you are having seizures or experiencing unexplained episodes, ask your doctor to refer you for an evaluation to determine if you are a possible candidate for the Epilepsy Program at Palmetto General Hospital. It is an advanced program that can help free you from complications and give you back your life.

Monica Mejia-Acosta, M.D. is a neurologist at Palmetto General Hospital specializing in epilepsy, stroke, neurointensive care, multiple sclerosis, and meningitis encephalitis. She is Board-Certified in Neurology, Psychiatry and Neurocritical Care. Dr. Mejia-Acosta attended University of Rosario School of Medicine in Bogota, Colombia, followed by Internships at Kennedy’s Hospital in Bogota; Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard University, Boston, MA; and Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. She went on to complete Residencies in Neurology and Neurointerventional Radiology at University of Chicago and University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) respectively. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a member of the Neurocritical Care Society, American Academy of Neurology and American Stroke Association-Stroke Council.

Shaun O. Smart, M.D. is a Neurologist and Epileptologist at Palmetto General Hospital specializing in epilepsy, video EEG monitoring, status epilepticus, psychogenic (non-epileptic) seizures, and intraoperative monitoring. He is Board-Certified in Psychiatry and Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. Dr. Smart attended University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, and then continued his training with a Residency in Neurology at University of South Florida in Tampa. He also completed Fellowships in Neurophysiology with a concentration in Epilepsy and Advanced Epilepsy and Intraoperative Monitoring at Duke University. Dr. Smart is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology – Clinical Neurophysiology. He is also a member of the Advanced Neuroscience Network, American Academy of Neurology, American Epilepsy Society and American Clinical Neurophysiology Society.

Generalized seizures appear to involve the whole brain. They include:• Absence seizures, also called petit mal, which cause subtle body movements and brief loss of awareness• Tonic seizures that result in muscles stiffening• Clonic seizures associated with recurring, twitching muscle contractions• Myoclonic seizures that appear as sudden, jerking movements in the arms and legs• Atonic seizures that cause loss of normal muscle tone• Tonic-clonic seizures, also called grand mal, which are intense episodes of body stiffening, shaking, loss of consciousness, and occasional loss of bladder control or tongue biting.

Ahora, a cuidarla. Salud! Dr. Guillermo Rodriguez NavarreteDoctor en Nutrición Humana | International Health Coach+1 (305) 335 2413 | [email protected] @Nutrillermo

What is the secret to living a happy life? The secret to living a happy life is knowing who you really are, which is not your thoughts, feelings, emotions, desires, or any experience. Who you really are is the awareness in which all experience happens. When you’re grounded in this awareness, then you have lightness of being and life is a state of flow.

What do you recommend people do to avoid letting their problems stress them out?The most important thing people can do to not let themselves feel stressed out is develop a daily practice of meditation.

What are the main benefits of meditation? The benefits of meditation are many-fold. On the physical level, your blood pressure normalizes, your heart rate reflects calm, your immune system gets stronger, and you have better sleep and more energy. On the spiritual level, you get connected with your deeper self, which allows you to spontaneously fulfill your desires because you find yourself inseparably one with all that exists.

What would the world need to achieve peace?Peace can only be created by those who are peaceful. The world needs a critical mass of people who are in state of peace consciousness.

What are the qualities that make you a good human being? The qualities that make you a good human being are authenticity, integrity, love, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

What do you believe is the purpose of life? The purpose of life is the progressive expansion of happiness and ultimately finding your true self.

What is a typical day like for you?A typical day for me is two hours of meditation in the morning, a yoga practice, and then going with the flow.

Are all your days different or are they routine? Every moment is unique.

What is the secret to achieving success? My formula, or mantra, is “pursue excellence, ignore success.”

What is the purpose for the 21-Day Meditation Challenge? The purpose of the 21-Day Meditation Challenge is to introduce people into a habit of meditation as a daily practice. It takes about 21 days to begin to establish a habit.

From its inception, Lighting Paradise has been the product of vision, inspiration and perseverance. Upon returning from service in the United States Army, Andres Cabo took a temporary job as a lighting sales person and consultant that led him to discover a passion of a

lifetime—in the lighting industry and in design. “I fell head over heels with the lighting fashion business, and the daily interaction with customers,” Andres enthuses. Together with his wife Doris, the husband-and-wife team turned their entrepreneurial venture into one of the state’s leading (and largest) lighting showrooms. “We started this business in 1992 with credit card cash advances, and now, 23 years later, we have evolved from a retail lighting showroom to actually designing lighting and selling to the public at wholesale prices,” Andres says. Located in Miami, Lighting Paradise is a full-service showroom with a focus on innovative product design and technology. “We are at the forefront of South Florida’s LED lighting movement, bringing in new, cost-saving innovations fresh from the top lighting fields,” Doris shares. In addition to leading-edge inventory, the team at Lighting Paradise is service-centric, offering “white-glove” treatment to each client. “Our first mission is to ensure not only value and pricing, but to give the client white-glove service and make sure that they are inspired by their lighting choices,” Andres says. Servicing a diverse clientele throughout the United States, Central America, South America and the Caribbean, Lighting Paradise offers a breadth of experience and insight into multicultural trends and design movements. “We pride ourselves in catering to every taste, style and budget to bring functional and beautiful lighting fixtures to the homes we have the pleasure of illuminating,” Andres says.

In Lighting Paradise, you can find under one roof, an endless selection of lamps, chandeliers, indoor and outdoor lighting, decorative accessories and fountains for your home or business.

They are member of the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org) with a A+ rating since the 1990’s and are an active member of the American Lighting Association.

What is your creative process? What is your favorite part of it? I visualize what the client wants to accomplish décor wise and what function they want out of their lighting fixture. I then grab their ideas and strive to make them come true with our design team. The most exciting part of this journey is experiencing the client’s delight, seeing their concept come to life as envisioned.

What are your favorite styles to work on and why?My favorite style to work on is contemporary crystal lighting. There is so much you can do with it. It merges two styles, and time periods in history, into one.

What are you working on next? We’re expanding our design capabilities to include energy- efficient LED lighting in all aspects of the lighting scheme for each home or project.

The restaurant’s interior embraces the BLT aesthetic with clean lines, rich finishes of walnut, leather and suede blending perfectly with signature Trump elements such as scrolled ceilings, natural stone surfaces and giant floor to ceiling windows.

The best seat in the house is anywhere on the large veranda. While seated next to its towering Corinthian columns you can enjoy a clear view of the water fountain in the foreground, golf course in the background, and the beautiful American flag waving proudly.

Live Doral Magazine (LDM) Meal RecommendationsUpon seating enjoy the Gruyere Cheese Popover bread. Once you cut into its unique shape you will be filled with the warm smell of Gruyere cheese. Coupled with salted butter this literally melts in your mouth and can be eaten with breakfast, lunch or dinner.

For appetizers we recommend the Tuna Tartare. Simply amazing - very fresh and light, and a perfect way to start a meal at the BLT Prime.

For the main meal I enjoyed the American Kobe Skirt Steak which is known for its intense flavor and supreme tenderness. These “American-style Kobe” beef cattle are fed a natural diet of barley, golden wheat straw, alfalfa hay and Idaho potatoes. Simply put it is OUTSTANDING. When ordered medium it is slightly crispy on the outside with the perfect amount of juiciness on the inside. This is served with a chimichurri sauce on top.

For dessert LDM recommends the Crepe Souffle w/ Passion fruit sauce. It is rather large so it’s best shared by two people.

To enjoy your night a little bit more order the Under Par. Made with Hangar 1 Citron, lemon juice, agave, Cointreau and refreshing cucumber juice it makes this the quintessential refreshing summer drink.

BLT Prime is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.Valet parking is available at a price of $5 for all restaurant patrons.Reservations suggested at (305) 591-6066 or www.bltprimemiami.com

At the Trump National Doral

A ll of us Doralian’s know the Trump National Doral, and most of us have heard of BLT Prime, but how many of us actually opt to stay in Doral for a fine dining experience? Well this gem of a restaurant provides the

perfect excuse to avoid the half hour drive to downtown and instead enjoy a warm environment and a mouth savoring meal right here at home.

BLT Prime at the Trump National Doral® is a result of the joint effort between The Trump Hotel Collection and the well respected ESquared Hospitality group. Chef de Cuisine Dustin Ward and Head Chef Paul Niedermann, whose career with the BLT family began after winning Season 9 of Hell’s Kitchen in 2011, oversee the menu. The finest cuts of USDA Prime Certified Angus beef available, including the 28 day dry-aged New York strip, Kansas City bone-in strip and Porterhouse for two, are the backbone of a menu that also boasts other BLT favorites such as tuna tartare, Dover sole and lobster cobb salad.

Steakhouse sides range from classic creamed spinach and truffled mashed potatoes to onion rings and hen of the woods mushrooms; desserts include a delectable peanut butter chocolate mousse as well as changing seasonal offerings. Both chefs have Florida roots, so guests can expect to see locally sourced produce and seafood dishes featured as weekly blackboard specials.

Located within the resort clubhouse lobby BLT was designed by Peter Niemitz in tandem with Eric Trump.

WChia (Salvia hispanica) is an herb from the mint family that grows in tropical or subtropical weather. Originally from Mexico, was an important part of ancient Aztecs and Mayans diet. Chia in the Aztec language (náhuatl) means

“oily” perhaps from its high fat content.

The actual seed (approximately 2 mm in length) is available in two varieties: white and black. The white (known as Salba) has a higher price in the market, and it is often difficult to find it. The black have small traces of white color in it. However, there doesn’t seems to be major differences from their nutritional point of view when comparing the two.

Chia is an excellent source of protein, calcium, magnesium, iron, antioxidants, soluble fiber and omega 3; which is a more amount of what is found in flaxseed, its closest “rival” in the herbal world. When Chia seeds are mixed with water, they create a gel-like in its surroundings (mucilage, a soluble dietary fiber), which have regulatory properties of the intestinal transit while helping slow, the absorption of sugars from food; helping to regulate postprandial glucose levels.

Preliminary scientific studies have shown that eating Chia seeds can help reduce blood pressure and C-reactive protein levels (a value related to inflammation) in people with type 2 diabetes. In relation to cholesterol consumption may contribute to lower levels of total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides (“bad” fats in the cardiovascular system, when in excess) and increase the good HDL cholesterol.

More research is needed to define the effects and benefits of Chia seeds for overall health, however, history has shown that they are safe and definitely worth using as a daily nutritional supplement.

There are two situations in which its consumption, like with any other food rich in omega 3, should be done with caution.

1 – In people taking Warfarin and/or Coumarin.

2 – In case of prostate cancer.

In the case of treatments the require anticoagulants because the omega-3 can increase the effect. In men with prostate cancer, the reason is that eating high amounts of ALA (a type of omega 3) can promote disease progression. In these particular circumstances the general observations go for any food or supplement-containing omega 3 and not just specifically to Chia.

The important thing is to be aware of what we eat and how to eat healthier. Let’s go back to the past: more whole grains, whole wheat, brown rice, oats, chia, flaxseed, quinoa, etc., and less refined derivatives such as white bread, white rice, processed oats, etc. A simple change like this can make a big difference in our gastrointestinal, cardiovascular and endocrine health. Therefore, these nutritional recommendations are for not only those with diabetes but anyone who wants to enjoy a healthier life.In regards to Chia, our recommendation is to give it a try. Two tablespoons a day (30 grams) as a supplement in your food could bring great benefits.

Enjoy this super food!
