The Whistle Blower

Clive Norling, that brilliant Welsh referee, said that he had never delivered a mistake free refereeing performance. And Onny Parun, perhaps New Zealand’s best ever tennis player, used to reflect about the strangeness of sport that requires your opponent to make mistakes so that you win the match. It’s just the nature of sport. Mistakes are part of the game. This past month I have been travelling watching referees and trying to teach them how to eliminate mistakes from their performances. All of these games have been at Heartland level where NZ Rugby is ‘blooding’ a new group of referees. I’ve seen some very good performances and some where the referees, often in their first performance, have made quite obvious errors. And while watching all that rugby I’ve seen players from all sides make errors and cost their team possession and or territory and often points. It is simply down to the pressure of the occasion. Players, like referees, try to do too much and make mistakes. What I have to do is bring the referee back to a simple, unemotional and intelligent game plan and when they deliver that plan they will achieve a performance to be proud of. And if they don’t improve? Well, I’m a coach and I hold them accountable for their performance and for their performance improvement. Making the same errors week after week only opens up pathways back to club footy and I suspect the same applies to our players. Let’s watch our Refs and Players and see them improve week by week. That’s what coaches strive for. I’ll be watching. I want you to do the same. The Whistle Blower.
