The Gentlemen’s Group is comprised of six artists: Michael Dodge, Robert Erb, George Ogalo, Joseph Lubey, James McCauley, and Michael Lamphere. They are flourishing in the Herkimer ARC’s Bridges to Success day program. Their goal: to turn trash into artistic treasure and in the process to create their own beautiful stories of friendship, acceptance, and independence.

“A True Artist, Flowers Found in Our Minds” was created especially for the 2014 New York International Wine Auction. This is the Gentlemen’s second year being involved in the wine auction. In the last year, their artwork has been flying off the shelves at the Herkimer ARC kiosk at Gems Along the Mohawk, 800 Mohawk Street, in Herkimer, NY. Recently the group entered and won awards for two pieces of original artwork in the 63rd annual Central Adirondack Art Show at View in Old Forge, NY. Their artwork has also been gaining recognition as well as brisk sales have helped to fund for supplies, and ultimately paid for a large portion of the renovations needed to turn a garage at the Gale W. The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon greets the eye and is coupled with aromas of ripe crushed blackberries, cocoa powder, violets and bitter chocolate. Unlike previous renditions of this wine, look for an extra layer of tamed tannin due to the vintage. While this will require some cellaring time— the lush and exuberant fruit from the vintage will allow you to drink this wine in two to five years, but look for it to peak in ten to fifteen. Stunning, just stunning!

The 2008 shows the luscious fruit and softness of previous vintages, with rich, layered raspberry, cherry, cassis, vanilla, caramelized oak and spice flavors that go on and on into a long finish. The tannins are sturdy from this blend of the two Cabernets, Sauvignon, and Franc, which was grown on the lower slopes of Howell Mountain. Yet it’s so sweet and fruity, you can drink it now.

The 2009 has every hallmark of a young Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. It’s dry, smooth and complex in tannins, with balancing acidity and an incredible array of flavors, including blackberry, black currant, cherry, chocolate, dried herb, smoky oak, and spice. It’s delicious now and it should develop in the bottle for at least ten years.

The 2010 is a dark ruby/plum/purple-tinged blend that reveals attractive raspberry, black cherry, and black currant fruit intermixed with hints of forest floor and flowers. Elegant, medium-bodied, and delicious with no hard edges, it offers a sweet inner-core of fruit, so drink this attractive, stylish 2010 over the next 10-12 years. Robert Parker Rating: 90

Fleshy, ripe, and youthful are all words that pop into mind with this year’s Family Reserve Cabernet. The winery could not be more pleased with how this wine has evolved while ageing under the influence of 100% new French Oak. The aromatics are plush and highly perfumed with ripe cherry, clove, cinnamon, small blackberries, and currants. The color fixes on a beautiful dark red and purple hue that clings to the glass. The palate is smooth and drifts into the center to and expansive fruit bomb. There is no pocket of the mouth unfilled escaping this wine’s sumptuous flavor. Extended ageing really lengthens tannin into finer shapes in the mouth. Anticipated maturity is 2015 to 2030. Only 350 cases produced. Wine Spectator Rating: 92

The 2006 Terrace Select showcases wonderfully concentrated black currant fruit, which is framed with complementary oak and accented with touches of cocoa and coffee.The hearty 2007 vintage yielded layers of ripe cherry and black currant. Complex aromas are complimented by oak and vanilla and lead to a long smooth finish. With time in the glass (or decanter), even more floral aromas of jasmine and honeysuckle come forward. The flavors of Pippin apple and lemon-lime are long and intense. While there is a round broadness on the mid-palate, a beam of vibrant acidity and youthful structure holds the fruit taught balancing the soil’s signature minerality with the mature vine’s complexity. Although huge in the mouth, the wine is remarkably well-balanced, with its high tannin level well-concealed by copious quantities of sweet ripe fruit, as well as huge amounts of glycerin and extract. Parker has consistently rated the 1991 Harlan Estate in the mid to upper nineties, but in this blind tasting with so many high quality wines, it was a big-time winner. 2011 Sonoma Valley Pinot NoirEnticing aromas of cherry liqueur, ripe plum, and spice are accompanied by notes of orange peel, anise, and wet stone in this Pinot Noir. It has a voluptuous, full body, yet is still crisp and fresh on the palate with lots of peach and subdued citrus flavors, all with pleasingly low acidity.


Annually, NYIWA also funds the Herkimer ARC Guardianship Program, which assists 20 to 25 families per year through the process

The dense, muscular fruit follows through to an impeccable finish with no hard edges and impossibly fine, silky tannins. Simply put, the 2007 is a magnificent Tignanello. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2027. Robert Parker Rating: 95There is not a hard edge to be found in the 2008 vintage. Black cherries, tobacco, smoke, and licorice are some of the notes that come through on the finish. The flavor profile is decidedly on the dark side, but the wine’s structure is medium in body and intensity. In 2008, the Tignanello has more energy, focus and length than the Solaia. 2011 Toboni Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir

Initially, the Toboni Pinot Noir bursts out of the glass with aromas of pie crust, mulberry, and cherry pie filling. A subtle oak component emerges after some time in the glass which, on the palate, provides a framework for the brooding red and blue fruit. As the wine opens, wild berries and beef tartar are detectable on the nose. Perfect acid balance carries the finish and lingers nicely. This wine is eminently drinkable now, but has the material to age for a decade or more.

2011 Russian River Valley Pinot NoirThe Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is a blend sourced from seven vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. The unique sites chosen for this blend each contribute distinct layers of complexity to the aromatics, flavors and textures of the finished wine. On the nose, the wine leads with notes of red raspberry and ripe cherry. Spices like cinnamon and nutmeg also mingle with the fruit bouquet. The flavors on the palate are balanced and pure. Reinforcing the aromas, there are characteristics like ripe cherry, raspberry, black currant and cola. The wine’s crisp acidity adds a refreshing quality to the lingering finish.

The palate is even and expansive. There is no pocket of the mouth unfilled or escaping this wine’s sumptuous composition. 2010 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Rich aromas of blackberry, cassis, mocha, and blueberry. Harvested from the premier areas of Oakville and the northwest slope of Napa proper, this is not a Cabernet for the weak at heart. Its flavors are derived entirely from its terroir. Beckstoffer Heritage VineyardHistorical records show that a portion of this vineyard was planted in 1895 by Mrs. Thomas Rutherford. This 300-acre parcel first purchased by Beaulieu founder Georges de Latour in 1928 and called Beaulieu Vineyard Number 3, was the home to BV’s Rutherford Cabernets made by the renowned winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff. These wines achieved wide acclaim in the 1960s and 70s, establishing BV’s pre-eminence in the making of fine Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Purchased by Beckstoffer Vineyards in 1988, the vineyard has since been replanted using new Cabernet Sauvignon clones with tighter spacing and advanced trellising systems, enhancing both quality and grape tonnage. In 2009, 181 acres were placed under a land conservation easement that forever prohibits non-agricultural development. Vineyard Georges III is today home to the main offices of Beckstoffer Vineyards.
