Dear Friends:
Tick-tock, tick-tock, these were the days, as a kid, of growing excitement with the nearness of Christmas. As the Worship Aid indicates, a mere 240 hours remain until the Eve and Day of Christmas. Or, as you recall from my previous sharing’s regarding the enthusiasm with which I awaited Christmas Eve, Christmas Eve’s eve, eve, eve, eve, eve, eve, eve, eve, eve, eve! In any case, Mother Nature is cooperating with appropriately WINTER-esque weather, cold nights, wet-winter-storms and ample snow in our local mountains for those who wish to slip and slide their way down mountainsides (as opposed to people like me who prefer to nestle warmly inside before a crackling fire while sipping hot cocoa.) Writing this in advance of going up to my Idyllwild abode earlier this past week, I am both looking forward to/dreading the accumulation of snow from the recent storms that dumped over four feet of the powdery white stuff on the San Jacinto mountains. Don’t get me wrong, I love the snow, I love the look and stillness of snow storms and beauty of the mountains coated white…I just hate my FIRST arrivals after a storm when I have to tromp through un-shoveled paths to both my front door and all the water spigots that either need to be turned on or shut off and the fresh shoveling that is required in order to get to my firewood and my parking area. (There is also the adventure, when turning the water back on, of waiting and seeing if any pipes have sprung any leaks…never a fun moment.)
I have verbally invited you but one last pitch to have you stop by and VISIT THE RECTORY TODAY (Sunday, December 15th from 2pm-5pm) for the Annual Rectory Christmas Open House. I started the tradi-tion of hosting the Rectory Open House many years ago while still down south at Corpus Christi. In the days of the early 2000’s surrounding the first outbreak of clergy abuse/misconduct, it seemed a prudent and transparent way of conveying openness to my parish community regarding my living quarters. In those days (early 2000’s) our parish hosted everything from Youth Ministry meetings and retreats to assorted other parish events at the Rectory; opening it annually for anyone/everyone to see that it was/is a normal house, much like yours, was/is a simple (though rare among parishes) thing to do. Add to it some delicious egg nog, plenty of holiday snacks, some carolers and you have a proper holiday EVENT while at the same time transparently showing that we/I have nothing to hide. I do hope you will find some time to brave the difficult parking to come by and say hello while enjoying some home baked chocolate chip cookies, wassail, egg nog, and assorted other treats to keep you warm and sate your hungers.
While Halloween is long gone, back on December 5th I inadvertently gave a scare to our pianist, Josh. When arriving on property to prep for our Advent Penance Service, I noticed two cars, suspiciously parked next to one another, one space separating them (through the years, our security cameras have captured all sorts of question-able and downright lude, rude and embarrassing activity in the dark of night…) Thus, I pulled up between the cars, the one with its parking lights still on (CA license: NARDOS5), its windows being heavily tinted I could not see inside. Thinking that my close proximity, combined with my snapping of pictures, would have generated some sort of reaction, I invited the OC Sheriffs to swing by and investigate. The sheriffs arrived approximately 10 or so minutes later… by then the ‘suspicious’ vehicles had departed…and Josh (our piano player) had arrived…Josh was promptly surrounded by three Sheriff cars and the accompanying officers, wanting to know what he was doing? That will teach Josh to linger in the parking lot rather than warming up at the piano INSIDE the Hall!! By the way, if you know the owner of NARDOS5, please suggest they use other locations for their meetings.
This coming Thursday is our NIGHT of STORY and SONG…an easy evening of pausing from the many tasks and frenzies of the season to simply relax…WITH NO EXPECTATIONS but to help you rest and re-center on the purpose of Advent. Starting at 7pm, the evening is focused on Seminarian Vincent reading a Christmas Story, accompanied throughout by suitable Christmas Carols to help augment the story. Ample quantities of hot cocoa, wassail (mulled cider) and Christmas cookies will be available…and everything is FREE!!! Just a pleasant old-fashioned evening by which to relax and re-center on the meaning of Advent and the approach of Christmas. Bring your kids, bring your friends, come and enjoy….7pm this Thursday, December 19th.
Technically, for another week, still Autumn, the approaching WINTER season promises to be a return to reliable chilly wetness. Next weekend, the Fourth Sunday of Advent, most of us will be caught up with final prep for Christ-mas Eve-Christmas Day, picking up relatives at airports or preparing ourselves for holiday, meals, events or travel. Please be wise in planning your Christmas Eve/Day Mass attendance; the Masses on Christmas Eve, while crowd-ed, are especially magical, while the SINGLE morning Mass (10am) on Christmas Day is solidly Christmassy but lacking the special quality that only nighttime can bring. No matter which time or day you choose for Christmas, as you slowly bring your Advent prep to a close, please remember, you are loved. FKB

Isaiah 35:1-10 James 5:7-10 Matthew 11:2-11240 hours (give or take) till Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. The seasonal consumer extravaganza is about to reach its culmination and the ‘Post-Christmas’ rush to return gifts and avail of dramatic price cuts (so as to make way for Valentine’s items) will rival Black Friday’s madness. Thus, is the environment in which the voice of Isaiah struggles to be heard: ‘Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, say to those whose hearts are frightened: be STRONG, FEAR NOT!’ With so much attention focused on the material gifts upon assorted ‘gift lists’, what are the things within us that no amount of extravagance can satisfy? A son or daughter who is lost: literally, spiritually or emotionally? A marriage that is dry and lifeless? A relationship that has gone sideways and pride is keeping us from mending it? Regrets of choices not made earlier in life? Regrets of choices made…but were wrong from the start? Emptiness and loneliness? Secrets hidden that long to be revealed? While the holiday lights twinkle on homes and buildings and JOY is SCREAMED from every advertisement, many of those wearing their reds, greens and festive holiday garb carry within them the dull ache of emptiness and futility; no matter how big the pile of presents beneath the tree, their heart, their soul is not consoled. The Gospel of Matthew, while written in regards to the ADULT Jesus, nonetheless applies to the infant whom we await: because of Jesus, the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. 240 hours remaining to simply ASK JESUS TO BE BORN WITHIN YOUR HEART…and then the rest of the year to unwrap the gift of his presence.
Thank you for sharing these Advent days with our Santa Clara community, your presence among us is both a gift and a HUGE responsibility. YOU ARE INVITED, THIS SUNDAY to the annual Rectory Christmas OPEN HOUSE from 2pm-5pm (sharp, no lingering past 5!) 5475 Bayberry Way is the address, please be mindful of not blocking anyone’s driveway when parking. Warm sweaters and jackets are recommended for sitting outdoors while enjoying the edible treats…at least it is NOT supposed to rain! You are also invited to this Thursday’s NIGHT OF STORY AND SONG at 7pm. Seminarian Vincent will read a beautiful Christmas story accompanied with sing-along Christmas carols from our Music Ministry. You are welcome to enjoy Christmas cookies, wassail (mulled cider) and hot cocoa….and it is ALL FREE. Just a pleasant way to regather yourself amid the frenzy of the season, courtesy of the parish that loves you. Please take a Bulletin with you as you depart and please remember, you are LOVED! FKB
