In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life’s journey distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the support of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and renew the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is “Saint James of the Field of Stars.” There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there. PASTOR’S CORNER: It seems like there is not a week that goes by that I am not requested by a member of the Prayer Shawl ministry to bless a prayer shawl. This ministry in the parish has made and delivered 122 prayer shawls since the beginning of the year! It is not just the time that goes into the crafting of each prayer shawl but the prayers that are woven into each shawl that is amazing. These works of prayer are given to those in need of healing as well as during joyful occasions as a reminder of the support and prayers of others. Please contact the office if you are in need of a prayer shawl. And if you would like to become involved in this ministry their next meeting is August 11th at 10:30am in the parish hall. Mini-shawls are also available

in the Gathering Area of the church. We are just days away from the parish Family Fest! Please pray for good weather and a good experience of community. The festival is so important because it builds community and eases the parish’s financial budget. For this reason we need everyone’s prayers and support. If you haven’t made plans to stop by sometime Friday or Saturday and bring friends with you, please do so now. If you haven’t bought a chance at $15,000 and invited friends and co-workers to do the same, then please do so now. A lot of good things can come about when we strengthen the bonds of community and this is a great way to strengthen the community. Hope to see you there!

Fr. John

HELP! The next gospel reflection session will be Saturday, August 11th at 9:00am in the parish hall. During the five weeks that the Sunday gospel will be from the Gospel of John, Bread of Life discourse (chapter 6) I am looking for input for the homilies. We will be looking at the readings for August 19th and 26th (John 6:51-69). If you would like to learn more about the Eucharist as revealed in John’s gospel or share insights on how the readings affect your daily lives, and help me, please meet me on Saturday the 11th. We will be looking at the Scripture readings as well as other resources to further our understanding and appreciation for this great sacrament. MINISTRY OF GREETER: The role of a Greeter is to welcome people as they come into church for mass by greeting them, offering them a hymnal and answering questions or giving directions. This is a ministry that the whole family can become involved in. Young children love greeting people and it gives them a sense of participation. This ministry sets the tone for the entire mass and reminds us that we can make a difference in the lives of others throughout the week by showing hospitality and a warm welcome. If you are interested in becoming a Greeter please contact the parish office or Sue Wiedenmannott who heads up this ministry. “The true peacemakers are those who maintain peace of mind and body for love of our Lord Jesus Christ, no matter what they must endure in this world.” – St. Francis of Assisi WOMEN OF FAITH: Women of all ages are welcome to come together and grow spiritually in community. We will gather on Monday, August 6th at 6:30pm in the Parish Hall. On this Feast of the Transfiguration, we will learn about the importance of this special event in our Catholic

faith. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Ogonek at: [email protected] SUMMER BREAK! This weekend the Lectionary interrupts the semi-continuous readings from Mark’s gospel. Over the next five Sundays, the gospel readings will be taken from chapter 6 of the Gospel of John, the bread of life discourse of Jesus. Several scholars have suggested that chapter 6 of John’s gospel may have originally been the text of a homily or treatise by an early Christian teacher on the developing sacrament of the Eucharist. Jesus’ feeding of the multitude with scraps of bread and fish is the only miracle recorded in all four gospels. This story was cherished by the first Christians for whom the Eucharist was becoming the center of their life together. Jesus’ actions are indeed “Eucharistic”: bread (and fish) is collected, Jesus gives thanks and breaks the bread, and the community feasts. The gospel readings over the next few Sundays will invite us to consider the deeper meanings of Eucharist: Christ Bread of Life, present to us in this sacrament that is given to us in order that we might become sacrament for one another. - Living Liturgy PARISH COUNCIL: Three members of the council, Julie Gauvreau, Jon Axe and Don Carmichael, will be completing their term of service at the September meeting. We are in the process now of looking for interested parishioners who will take their place on council beginning with the October meeting. The commitment to council is for three years with an option for an additional year. Parish Council meets on the first Thursday of each month with a break in August. If you are interested in being on Parish Council please see any one of the current members whose names are listed on the front of the bulletin or contact Fr. John.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER: As we work towards one of our parish goals to "increase the level of stewardship in the parish - contributions of time, talent and treasure," we are ready to form a Stewardship Committee. All are encouraged to prayerfully discern to join! This group will generate ideas and implement steps needed to help parishioners better understand stewardship as a way of life in our parish. We will all grow spiritually as we go through this process. We will meet once a month beginning in August. If you have any questions, please contact Grace Ogonek at [email protected] or leave a message at the parish office. GLFF NEWS: Classes will begin on Sunday, September 9th, 9:30-10:50am. Online registration will be available in August. If you are interested in growing in your faith, why not consider being a faith formation teacher? Being a catechist is a special way to share Jesus' love for you with others. For more information, please contact Grace Ogonek at [email protected] or leave a message at the parish office. FAMILY MASS: Our next Family Mass will be on August 19th at 8:30am. Currently, we need one Eucharistic Minster, two greeters, and a family for the presentation of the gifts. All parish families are invited to participate. The "Family Mass Sign-Up" link is accessible on the parish website at olqpgrafton.org or call the parish office to sign up. Embrace this opportunity to teach your children about actively participating in Mass through your involvement in these various Mass ministries. INTERESTED IN BECOMING CATHOLIC? If you know someone who may be interested in becoming Catholic now would be a good time to give them that nudge that they may need. It is a good time during these next few months to help them to come in touch with the call of God in their lives and to direct them to myself, Grace Ogonek, Sally Logar, Chuck Rink, or Kathy Keyse. We would be more than happy to sit down with them to answer questions and ease anxieties. The RCIA process for those seeking to become Catholic will begin in September. Also if you are interested in being on the team that journeys with the candidates to the Easter sacraments please let us know. It is so rewarding sharing ones faith and being nurtured by those seeking a deeper relationship with God through participation in the Catholic Church.
