If we take this bird in, with it's broken leg, We could nurse it, she said,

Come inside for a little lie down with me, And if you fall asleep, it wouldn't be the worst thing.

But when I wake up, and your make up is on my shoulder,

And tell me if I lie down, would you stay now? Let me hold ya, oh.

My little bird.

If we take a walk out, in the morning dew, We can lay down, so I'm next you,

Come inside for a little home made tea, And if you fall asleep, then at least your next to me, And if I wake up, say it's late love, get back to sleep,

I'm covered by nature and I'm safe now, Underneath this oak tree, with you beside me.

My little bird, My little bird, My little bird.

And of all these things I'm sure of, I'm not quite certain of your love,

You make scream, and then I make you cry, When I left that little bird with it's broken leg to die.

My little bird, whoa oh oh oh whoaa, My little bird, My little bird,

You're my little bird...

Literary DevicesSymbolism- the line is comparing his cautiousness to swimming

“And it’s not complete yet, mustn’t get our feet wet, ‘cause that leads to regret, diving in too soon”

Literary DevicesSporadic Rhyming Patterns- there isn’t a definite rhyming pattern, but there is random rhyming throughout

“If we take a walk out, in the morning dew,

We can lay down, so I'm next you,

Come inside for a little home made tea,

And if you fall asleep, then at least your next to me,

And if I wake up, say it's late love, get back to sleep,

I'm covered by nature and I'm safe now,

Underneath this oak tree, with you beside me.”

Literary DevicesExtended Metaphor- he compares the girl to the little bird the entire song

“ You’re my little bird”

Why I chose this song…I chose this song for my presentation because it is my favorite song and I thought it would be fun to use for a school project.

SpeakerThe speaker in this song is a guy who is contemplating his present or past relationship and whether or not he should let go of it.

Personal Interpretation When I first listened to the song, I imagined that it was about this guy’s relationship that maybe isn’t working out perfectly and he is now contemplating giving the relationship another try. He is not quite sure what to do and doesn’t want to jump to any conclusions immediately. I thought the “broken leg” was symbolizing the brokenness in their relationship and in the end he decides to not continue their friendship.

The Story Behind the Song

This song is also based on true events, when Ed and his girlfriend found a chicken with a broken leg. His girlfriend suggested they looked after it until it got better, but Ed wanted a cup of tea and to go to bed. When they awoke, the bird was dead. Ed felt so bad he wrote a song about the ‘little bird’.

The cup of tea Ed sacrificed a chicken’s life for…
