Editor's NoteAfter a painstaking year-long process involving missed deadlines, various mishaps with magazine personnel, and countless beers, teas, and coffees, the staff of the Little Big Mag would like to welcome everyone to our first issue.

In this issue we will look at yoga and its influence on Wuxi and give everyone a basic introduction to this ancient practice. We have chosen this topic not only because of its growing popularity in Wuxi, but its accessibility to the general public. Yoga can be practiced by anyone of any age or skill. You may not be able to put your feet behind your head (yet), but the basic positions are quite simple and can even be done at home.

To prove that we care not only about our readers' physical health but their sanity as well, we have also included a Wuxi survival guide, a calendar of events highlighting all the worthy entertainment-related goings-on in the city, and dining and drinking recommendations. Additionally, for all the men out there, we have included a brief how-to guide on 007 complete with three simple steps you can use to transform yourself from superslob to supersuave. For the ladies, there is a review of the fashion in the hit show Gossip Girl.

Here at the Little Big Mag, we also like to make our readers as successful as possible in their favorite pursuits, so we have provided some photography and cocktail-making tips that you can practice until the release of the next issue. In fact, the magazine is fairly packed with pieces relating to Chinese and Western culture including interviews, reviews of everything from books to gadgets, and even an account of a young foreign “grasshopper” at Shaolin.

So we invite you to join us as we explore Wuxi, China, and the world all from a big magazine that's little enough to take away...

The yard glass is an object commonly found in bars

and pubs across many Western countries such as Britain, Australia, and America. It is a drinking glass approximately a yard long (that’s almost a meter) that narrows from the mouth down to the bottom of the glass, which then widens into a bulb-like shape. The exact origins of the glass are not known, but the earliest written record of a glass that resembles this size and description was found in the diary of an English man from 1683, prompting historians and drinking enthusiasts to name England as its country of origin.Much to the delight of thirsty 17th-century stagecoach drivers, but to the horror of their passengers, the glass was apparently invented to allow the drivers to drink beer without getting down from the coach or letting go of the reins. As the drivers sat fairly high off the ground, the glass had to be long enough to hand them, which explains the unusual length. The shape of the glass also meant that the driver could drink from the glass while still steering the coach. (Think about that the next time you complain when a taxi driver lights a cigarette or answers the phone.) The editors of the Little Bigipedia couldn't find any statistics on 17th-century drunken-stagecoach-driving accidents, but the list must have been a yard long. Today the glass is mostly used in drinking competitions in pubs and bars the world over. The drinker must consume the whole glass as quickly as possible without stopping for breath and without soaking themselves with the contents. Many first-time yard glass drinkers tip the glass too quickly and find themselves face to face with a wall of beer. For those who fancy themselves to be champion drinkers, the Guinness Book of Records has the record for consuming a yard of ale at 5 seconds. If you do manage to break the record, you’ll find yourself in distinguished company as former Australian Prime

Minister Bob Hawke is a previous record-holder for the fastest drinking of a yard. So if you regularly drive a stagecoach or love a refreshing challenge, keep an eye out for a yard glass mounted on a pub wall.

Pit pat pit pat pit pat was the sound that I had now become accustomed to as my eco-friendly, but

unwanted alarm clock. With one eye I would try to focus on my watch, knowing that it was five am but hoping

somehow that the school had allowed the students at least a couple of extra hours' lie-in. Errrrr no, it was five am. I would

try to sit up slowly and smoothly like a sloth, propping my foam pillow against the cold stone bedroom wall. My arms would

tremble as I began to put weight on them, my back sore and my legs feeling as if they were contained in lead boots, making the slow

and painful transition last for at least a couple of minutes.

Since I lacked the luxury of morning television, once I was upright I would read a chapter of my book, George Orwell’s Down and

Out in London and Paris. Again without relying on my clock I would know that six o’clock had arrived as natural light would begin to beam through my one-square-foot paneless window. This was the sign for me to begin the second phase of the painful ordeal of actually getting out of bed. I would slowly slide my right leg out, followed by the left. With palms flat on the wooden frame I would psyche myself up: one, two, three and stand. Yes! Made it up. I would slowly walk to the door feeling all of the ligaments and tendons slowly moving like rusty old cogs and pistons in a clapped-out engine.

My bedroom was built onto a large green carpeted training hall. To my left would be another room, which was actually a

mirror of mine, except there was my Frenchman, Gerald, occupying it. Unlike me, Gerald had a shaved head and a small build, was absolutely totally nuts about kung fu and had an even stronger

I Am….passion for referring to me as the ‘f*@#ing English guy!’ rather than calling me by my first name, Tim. He had already been living at the school for eight months and planned to stay for at least another four, making my pitiful two months look like an extended weekend away. His body, like that of all the Chinese students, was like putty and could bend into all sorts of wonderful and seemingly impossible shapes. The two of us would normally meet in the canteen for breakfast as he would normally get up earlier than me to train and practice before breakfast.

The five-star set menu would normally consist of man tou (soft bread), the staple of Deng Feng, some pickled vegetables, a couple of eggs and soya milk. This menu would also be used for lunch and dinner, with the

exception that on a good day we would get rice and sometimes a Taiwan hotdog on a stick. So if anyone is looking for a dieting program 100% guaranteed to lose eight kilograms in two months, enroll full time at a kung fu school.

After breakfast my morning class would begin. I would be dressed in my blue and white school training tracksuit and my 15RMB flat white rubber-soled training shoes. The first part of the class would be spent running up

and down the first leg of Song Shan. Being one of the very few lao wai in Deng Feng at that time, I always received a very excited hello from students attending neighboring schools who would pass me by on the ascent and descent of Song Shan. After the final 200 m dash back to school on the final leg of the run I would immediately begin stretching. Gerald and I would then be separated and taught individually by a disciple of one of the principal monks, Shi De Cheng.

My instructor was named Xiao Chen and had been at the school for around ten years. He was a little younger than myself; I would guess around seventeen, but he took his job very seriously. Each day the two of us

would go through the twenty-five basic movements, ji ben gong, followed by an hour of tao lu. Tao lu was invented by monks as a form of exercise simulating the movements of animals to try help the monks stay fit and healthy, as many monks had become overweight from spending too much time meditating. These forms were later adapted into a fighting art used to protect the monks and the monasteries from invaders. As a Shao lin kung fu ‘grasshopper,’ I was learning the basic traditional forms which focus on improving strength, agility and flexibility. Unlike most modern day wu shu forms, the traditional forms are a lot less visually spectacular. They are simpler, more aggressive and more functional. In addition to the basic unarmed forms, I also began to study how to use traditional weapons such as the broadsword, dagger, bow, whip and double dagger.

At eleven we would be served lunch, followed by a two-hour nap session. Afternoon class would commence at two and would follow exactly the same format as the morning class. At five dinner would be served and then I

would normally walk down to the local bath house. After a quick scrub down I would then walk to the local sell-everything-you-could-ever-want hole-in-the wall shop to stock up on sweets and chocolate. Because of the training, Gerald and I both found that come seven o'clock we would be dying for sugar, whether it was in the form of sweets, cakes or fizzy drinks.

At nine, everyone including myself, Gerald and all of the teachers at the school would have to return to our rooms as 'lights out’ would be implemented. Since Gerald and I really didn’t have any major forms of

entertainment in our rooms, we would sometimes sit in the dark, drink beer and chat about bloke stuff until we went to sleep.

Six years later I am still passionate about martial arts. I was actually the kickboxing instructor at my university. At national and international tournaments I would often be invited to perform one of the traditional Chinese forms

that I had learnt here in China. Kung fu is still a major draw for many foreigners and I hope that in the future more and more lao wai will come and experience training alongside Chinese students in Deng Feng's kung fu schools.

噼啪噼啪这样的声音已经变成了我早已习惯的闹钟。睁开一只眼睛看手表，凌晨5点。真希望学校可以让学生多睡几小时懒觉。但是不行，已经5点了。我像一个树獭一样慵懒地坐起来，靠在泡沫枕上。

训练馆左边的房间里住着一个叫Gerald的法国人。与我不同，他留着光头，身形较小。Gerald对功夫的狂热程度无法用语言描述，宁愿把我称作‘f*@#ing English guy’也从不叫我的名字。他已经在学校里学习了八个月并计划至少还要再呆四个月，让我觉得我那可怜的两个月就像是他的一个周末。与很多中国学员一样，他的身体就像油灰一样可以蜷曲成各种奇妙而又不可思议的形状。他起的比我早，喜欢在吃早饭前先锻炼，所以我们两经常一起在食堂里吃早饭。

一成不变的‘五星级’菜单上列有：馒头，腌菜，

鸡蛋和豆浆。中午和晚上也是如此，当然有些时候也会有特例-米饭和台湾香肠。如果你还在寻觅两个月内减掉16斤百分百有效的节食方案的话，就去全日制的武术学校报名吧。

早餐之后晨课就正式开始了，我会穿上蓝白相间

的运动服和15块一双的白色橡胶平底训练鞋。晨课的第一部分就是绕着嵩山来回跑步。做为当时在登封为数不多的老外学生之一，我经常会在上下山途中遇到邻校的学生热情地跟我打招呼。在用尽最后的力气全速冲回学校后，伸展训练随即开始，Gerald和我就会各自跟随自己的师傅（都是shi de cheng校长的徒弟）单独学习。

我的老师叫小陈，他在这所学校已经有十年了。他比

我年轻些，我猜在17岁左右，但他对待工作却十分认真。我们每天都要练习一遍25套基本式，基本功，接着就是一个小时的套路。套路是由僧侣们发明的模仿动物行为的一套动作，近年来很多僧人花在诵经念佛的时间过多而导致体重超标，这套动作可以帮助他们保

持体形及促进身体健康。之后僧人们用来抵御外敌侵犯的格斗就是在这套动作基础上演变形成的。作为一个少林功夫蚱蜢，我当时学的是旨在提高身体力量，灵活性及适应性的基本传统动作。与大多数现代武术不同，传统武术少了很多视觉上的花哨，相比之下更为简单，具有进攻性以及更为实用。除了赤手空拳的一些基本动作，我还苦练了一些传统兵器，如大刀，短剑，弓箭，长鞭和双剑号。

11点是午饭时间，之后有两个小时的午休。下午两

点，与上午相同的课程又一次准时开始。5点吃过晚饭后，我会步行去澡堂里洗澡。在快速冲洗后，我就会去格子店买糖和巧克力。因为训练的关系。Gerald和我都觉得一到晚上7点，我们就很想吃甜的东西，不管是糖果，蛋糕还是饮料。

六年后的现在我依然对武术充满热情。当我还在大

学读书时，曾做过学校里的跆拳道指导。每当有全国或国际锦标赛举行的时候，我常会被邀请作为嘉宾为观众表演我在中国所学的传统武术。功夫对许多外国人仍有着不小的吸引力，我希望今后有越来越多的老外可以来中国与中国学生一起体验武术的魅力。

You are also a bike ride away from perfectly clear blue lagoons and local villages. In the evenings, bars and restaurants are filled with

long sofas, TV screens playing Friends, The Simpsons and Family Guy. For a small town, the amount of different types of food available at the restaurants is amazing: Chinese, Indian, Western and local delicacies. Beer and cocktails always follow, with a few of the local clubs selling buckets of spirits and a straw to drink while socializing with other travelers next to open fires. The general atmosphere of the entire town is one of calm, chilled-out partying.

With regards to other towns and cities in Laos it is up to you to go and explore. Most travelers recommend Luang Prabang and

then exiting back through Thailand and arriving in Chiang Mai in the north or travelling south to destinations less affected by tourism to get a more genuine experience of Laotian culture. 这个月，我要向大家介绍一下老挝。想要以最便宜，最便捷的方式从中国到老挝或者其他东南亚国家，先要搭飞机落地于

曼谷。（下面介绍下如何找旅行社办理）在曼谷的旅行社，你可以申请前往老挝的签证并预定夜间巴士或者飞机去老挝的首都，万象。

巴士宽敞整洁，很贴心地为外国人播放西方影片，设有洗手间，空调，提供日常用餐。在等待签证批下前，你可能要在

曼谷小憩上几天。我曾在一间位于靠山路的旅行社办理，不过那里有很多旅行社，他们互相竞争以致价钱都很便宜，你可以先到处走走比较比较，以便杀价。

根据你到达万象的时间计算，一般花一天或半天就可以把这座城市的主要景点游览过来。如果你在回程的时候是从万象离

开老挝，那么这个地方肯定值得你推迟行期。

巴士和汽车是浏览老挝各个城市的最受欢迎的交通工具。不幸的是，那里的道路都不平整经常会坍塌陷进去。如果你的时

间不是很充裕，尽量控制在2~3个景点内，不然因巴士的故障问题会花费你很多的时间。

我去的时候在旺阳停留了六天，在万象待了两天半的时间。旺阳是个神秘而安静的派对天堂。镇上多有的店面在晚上十一

点都会打烊。不过这并不会影响你去找乐子的兴趣。那儿的人们早睡早起。在一顿慵懒的早餐之后，丰富的户外活动也接踵而来：攀岩，骑脚踏车，划独木舟，洞穴探险，漂流……

漂流一般就是让你躺在一只拖拉机的轮胎上，顺着湄公河而下至河边的酒吧。那儿的每个酒吧都有不同的主题，类似烤

肉，排球或者秋千。

你还可以骑着单车沿着那些纯净的蓝色盐水湖和村床悠闲地欣赏风景。每逢傍晚，酒吧和饭店都会摆满长沙发，电视上

发着《老友记》，《辛普森一家》，《家庭伙伴》等电视剧。小镇虽小，却有着许多种令人惊讶的各色菜式：中国菜，印度菜，西式的还有本地的特色菜。啤酒和鸡尾酒也不断供应。坐在明火边与其他旅行者交谈的时候一些本地酒吧还会像你销售桶装的雪碧，提供一支吸管让你饮用。整个小镇就如一个世外桃源般幽静，闲乐。

Since I left college, backpacking has been a passion of mine. Now, seven years later, I don’t have as much free time as before to travel, but I still try to fit in at least a couple of trips each year. Living in China is a great opportunity for

all of us to travel domestically or internationally to other nearby Asian destinations, seeing wonders that most of us will never see at home. Transportation is convenient, costs are low and the cultures are diverse.

This month I would like to introduce Laos. The cheapest and most convenient way of getting to Laos from China, as with most Southeast Asian countries, is to first fly to Bangkok. From a Bangkok travel agent you can then order

your Laos visa and book a night bus or flight to Vientiane, the capital.

The buses are large, tidy, and well kitted for foreigners with western movies, toilets, air-conditioning and regular food and toilet stops. You will probably have to spend a few days in Bangkok to wait for your visa to be processed. I

used an agent at Khaosan Road. There are a lot of agents there so competition keeps the price low as long as you haggle, look around and exercise a strategy of walking away.

Depending on the time of day you arrive in Vientiane, half a day to a day is enough to see all of the major sites. If you’re going to exit Laos from Vientiane, it may be worth delaying your sightseeing until the way back.

In Laos the only really acceptable way to travel between cities is by bus or car. Unfortunately the roads are basic and the buses regularly break down or suffer punchers. If you are short on time, it's probably best to limit yourself to

only two or three locations as you will easily lose a day if the bus has any problems.

When I went I spent six days in Vang Vieng and two half days in Vientiane. Vang Vieng is a secret chill-out party haven. Everything in the town has to close at eleven. This, however, does not affect your opportunity to have fun.

What I found was that people went to bed earlier and got up earlier. A lazy breakfast was followed by a day of outdoor activities, including rock climbing, cycling, canoeing, caving and the highlight: tubing.

Tubing basically consists of you spending your day lying in a tractor wheel inner tube, floating down the Mekong river and stopping at riverside bars along the way. Each bar is themed, with some having BBQs, volleyball courts

and swings.

Do you ever sit around and wonder why China is the way it is? Well of course you do. Throughout China’s long and dramatic history many events and people have had major impacts that still affect Chinese culture today. There are many things that are commonplace in modern Chinese life that started thousands of years ago. Today if you walk into any business or pay attention to any type of government structure in China you will see a strict formal bureaucracy. From McDonalds to the NPC everyone has a small role and they fulfill that role. This idea of strict bureaucracy goes back to the roots of Chinese history. Now let the history lesson begin.Around 470 BCE the Warring States period began in China during the decline of the Zhou Dynasty. You may know this turbulent time period from every Chinese movie you have seen. During this period of war, pillaging and all-out chaos between the many kingdoms people began to question life and wondered if there could be order in this time of complete disorder, and so the Golden Age of Chinese Philosophy was ushered in. It is from this search that the Hundred Schools of Thought developed. These schools are the basic philosophies of Chinese history. During this time Confucianism, Legalism and Taoism developed and began to take a major foothold in Chinese society and through the numerous scholars that were employed by rulers it also began to shape the way governments were run. The Kingdom of Qin under the leadership of Qin Shi Huang unified the warring kingdoms in 221 BCE and thus formed the first unified China. Remember Jet Li from The Mummy 3? Yeah, that guy, minus the terra cotta effects. It was under his rule that rigorous efforts were made to centralize the government. The government was formed on the ideals of Legalism, which called for strict laws and codes set by the government. It was under Qin Shi Huang’s rule that Confucianism was purged. This structure of strict, organized government would form the foundation of the next dynasty, which would become the standard of Chinese rule.A rebellion against the failures of the Qin Dynasty would lead to the establishment of the Han Dynasty in 202 BCE. One of the important developments during this dynasty was the mixture of Legalism’s code of laws and Confucius’ ideals and merit system to determine placement in government and high positions throughout China. It was during this time that the bureaucratic system that would last until the fall of the Qing Dynasty in 1911 was institutionalized. Sure, different rulers and different dynasties changed the structure a little but the basic formula would always stay the same.As time went on Legalism began to fade away, while Confucianism became the center of Chinese political and philosophical thought. With these ideas of structure and hierarchy, Chinese society took the shape that we see today.

Practicing yoga is a trend that has been gaining a lot of popularity recently, though it originated in India thousands of years ago. Thus, it features ancient elements that have endured until modern times. This is familiar territory if you happen to be Chinese, but for much of the world, connecting the things we do now to practices thousands of years old can be a novel concept.

The word yoga itself emerged from the Sanskrit alphabet, meaning “connecting” or “uniting”. Multiple systems of belief and philosophies use the word “yoga” to describe their medititative practices, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. These are still followed by many in India and around the world. However, the system that is most popular with yoga practitioners outside of India is Hatha Yoga and its variations.

The movements and the philosophy attached to Hatha Yoga owe their creation to Yogi Swatmarama of the 15th century, who broke from other yoga philosophies by focusing on the purification of the body as the basis for the purification of the mind and vital energy. This type of yoga not only differs from the various yoga philosophies, but it also distinguishes itself from other types of physical exercise due to the fact that besides fitness, it also attaches importance to arousing internal perception, which may bring both physical and mental balance.

The bodily positions and movements of yoga are known as asanas. Those who practice yoga or ascribe to the yoga philosophy are known as yoginis or yogis (not to be confused with the lovable cartoon bear or the baseball player). While practicing yoga, the coordination of body, consciousness and respiration is meant to generate a sense of relaxation and tranquility that makes one healthier, more peaceful and more concentrated. In the spirit of making the body and soul whole as well as harmonizing with the universe, ancient practitioners saw yoga not only as a practice but also as a way to explore the universe and human nature.

Contemporary practitioners of yoga are growing in number every day in many different countries and cultures. Many celebrities are also jumping on the yoga bandwagon, claiming that it not only helps them stay fit but keeps them mentally centered as well. Madonna, Jennifer Aniston, and Gisele Bundchen all reportedly practice it, making yoga an easy way for star-gazers to imitate their favorite celebrity. For those who think of it as a woman's activity, consider that numerous basketball and baseball stars have said they use to yoga to improve flexibility and avoid injury. Even players in historically violent sports such as rugby and American football are taking it up for the same reasons.

Yoga has a lot to offer, whether it's greater flexibility, mental and spiritual stability, or simply an excuse to put your feet behind your head. If it contines to grow and expand the way it has in the past ten years, this ancient practice promises to be around for many years to come.

My enthusiasm for yoga lies in each stretch of the body and each breath I take. As I perform these motions again and again, I get to know myself better with each passing day. In the meantime, thanks to the continuous exercise, my body is getting lighter and more graceful and my mind is more settled. Only in the process of practicing some tough positions did I realize that, “nothing is impossible as long as you stick it out till the end.”

I’ve learned how to cope with difficulties and setbacks even though they are everywhere in our daily lives. What’s more important is that I’ve also changed my attitude towards them, which means that I have become more patient and more tolerant. Instead of being a coward and running away from hardships, I choose to confront them and try everything I can to work them out. Now that yoga is a part of my life, I love it .

Tips from the InstructorThese tips apply to those who perpetually suffer from neck and shoulder pain as a result of sitting in front of a computer all day long. Long-term tension on the neck and shoulders could easily cause cervical syndrome and scapulohumeral periarthritis as well. The following steps should be effective in relieving the strain on your neck and shoulders and prevent the previously mentioned conditions:

Sitting on a chair, keep your abdomen in and lift your chest. Relax your shoulders ad face.

a. Anteroposterior motion of head and neck: Lower your head while

exhaling and then raise your head and lean backward while inhaling. Repeat the movement 5-6 times.

b. Side-bending: While exhaling, lean your head to the right until

your right ear istouching your right shoulder. Inhale as you return to your original position. Repeat 5-6 times.

c. Rotary motion of head and neck: Rotate your head to the right as you

breath out and then restore your head to the original position as you breath in. Repeat 5-6 times.Try to keep your body relaxed from the shoulders down and synchronize your movement with your breathing while practicing the steps above.

d. Back-arching: Put your hands behind your back and interlace your fingers. Lean your head backward while inhaling. Remove your hands from your back and stretch them

downward to your lower hips. Keep expanding your chest and relaxing your body from your shoulders down. Remain breathing naturally for 30-60 seconds. Unclasp your hands and return to the original position while exhaling.

“ Immediate attraction.” This is how Justin and Diana, two of the most recognizable names and faces in Wuxi, felt when they first met back at Morningside College in the United States. It may be difficult to navigate the murky waters of international intrigue from your cubicle at the company or to drive a thrilling spy-mobile from behind the desk you pilot every day, but add a dash of Bond here and there and you'll be guaranteed a livelier time. Read on to find out how to navigate the drab realities of the world with 007's style and panache.

Step 1: Look Like a SpyThe first step to becoming Bond is to look like him. 007's creator, Ian Fleming, generally has Bond wearing dark blue serge suits with white silk shirts and a knitted silk tie in the novels. The outfit is topped off with dark blue socks and black moccasin shoes. When not out destroying expensive spy toys or seducing ravishing women, he prefers to wear dark blue trousers and a white or blue cotton shirt with black casual shoes. You can purchase 50RMB and 100RMB ‘Top up’ cards from most magazine selling kiosks, small street stalls, china mobile/telecom centers and some large shops’. Some small stalls may ask you to pay an additional 1or 2 RMB service fee to buy the card from them. (If they ask for a lot more don’t pay it!)

Below is how you ask for the cards in Chinese…

Wo yao yi zhang wushi kuai (50RMB) / yibai kuai (100RMB) de yi dong (China mobile)/liantong (China telecom) dian hua zhong zhi ka.

I want one 50/100RMB (need to add ‘de’ for grammar) China mobile/China telecom phone card.

The card should be the same size as a business card, with normally a picture on the front, the mobile company’s logo and the amount of RMB in the card. On the back of the card there will be instructions in Chinese, a silver scratch strip, a long number, a barcode and finally the expiry date.

If you can’t read Chinese you can ignore most of the information on the back of the card. The most important information is under the first built point. There will be a number 13800XYZ505; this is the number you need to dial replacing the XYZ with your cities area code; so for example, Wuxi’s code is 0510. All of the codes start with 0 so this can be omitted. Add the number into the above number, 13800510505, and you will get through to an automated female Chinese voice. (Here we are assuming that your SIM card was purchased in the city that you are topping up in, or you will need to change the code to wherever you bought your SIM card from. So if you are in shanghai and need to top up your phone you still use the Wuxi code as your SIM card is a Wuxi SIM card.

I’m not going to include the translation of what is said on the automated voice to keep things simple; all you really need to know is dial 1 after the first and second segments of speech. So you will hear mandarin, then dial 1, then some more mandarin and dial 1 again.(omit this sentence?) After this you will hear some more mandarin; you then need to dial in the number behind the silver scratch panel followed by # and wait for the automated voice.

You can then either disconnect the call, and wait for a txt confirming your ‘top-up’ or dial 1 and then add on more money from another card.

If you choose to add more money, dial 1 wait for the voice to finish and then dial in the new cards scratched silver panel number as before.

Futsal is the new football craze hitting Europe and American and with the football ‘World Cup’ on its way it’

s sure to grown more popular in China too. Unlike traditional football ‘Futsal’ is normally played indoors on a

smaller pitch, with a smaller, heavier ball and smaller goals. The teams consist of five pitch players and three

to seven substitutes which normally results in faster play as subs can role on and off the pitch as they get tired

and recover. The parameter of the pitch is marked with lines rather than walls or boundaries limiting the space

of play putting emphasis on dribbling and good ball-control rather than the traditional less exciting long-ball

play normally adopted in conventional football. To sum up the main differences between football and futsal you

can think of futsal as the younger, faster, better looking brother of standard eleven side football.

First accounts of Futsal being played originate in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930 when Juan Carlos Ceriani

adapted the normal football rules so competitions could be held at YMCA’s. Another version of the game was

also developed on the streets of Sau Paulo, Brazil which led to the publishing of the first official rule book. The

game quickly spread across southern America with such demand the governing body FIFUSA (Federación

Internacional de Fútbol de Salón) was constructed in 1971, along with the ‘World Championships’.

Due to administration complications the name of the association was later changed to FUTSAL bycombing

the Portuguese futebol de salão and the Spanish fútbol de salón (and colloquially fútbol sala), which can

be translated as "hall football. In 1989, FIFA took over full sponsorship of the ‘World Championships’ held

in Holland. New rules and equipment were introduced including a new type of ball, goals and rolling subs

consequently leading to a faster, more technical game which is not only highly enjoyable for players but also

more fascinating for spectators to watch.

FIFA's strong connections with its member associations have allowed more countries to gain knowledge and

resources about futsal increasing the popularity of the sport to a global level.

The Ball Spherical in shape the ball is made from leather or other suitable material. The circumference is no more

than 70 cm (28 ins) and no less than 68 cm (27 ins) which basically relates to a standard size 3 football. The

weight of the ball is no less than 410 g (14 oz) which in relation to a standard ball has a reduced the bounce

by approximately 30%.

No. of players Like traditional indoor football the game consist of ten pitch players, five per team including goal keepers;

however, unlike traditional five aside there are an increased number of substitutes who can use the fast paced

‘flying substitution’ method to come on and off the ly affect the games result. It also keeps the match running

at full pace with players spending a few minutes recovering and then returning to play.

The pitch and equipmentThe pitch is normally made up of wood or an artificial material, but the real benefit that futsal has is that it

can actually be played in any small open space. Car parks, basketball courts or even the beach can all lend

themselves to this game. The length of pitch is normally 39-43m by 18-25m. The Rectangular goals must be at

least 3 m in width and 2m in height and the goal keeper’s semi-cirle in front of the goal to fit the smaller pitch

is 12m in diameter and contains a penalty spot marked at 6m. This mark indicates the traditional penalty spot

for a foul on an attacking player by a defending player inside the keeper’s area. A second penalty spot has

been introduced for futsal located a further 4m back from the standard penalty-spot and is used when a player

commits his team’s sixth foul. If the foul was committed within the player’s home half then the opposition can

take a penalty from the second spot.

For 2010 the dimensions of the pitch and the rules have been updated and can be downloaded from the Fifa

website, however in reality, with the free, fun-loving spirit of fustal the rules and pitch size can be adapted to

your needs. All you need is a ball, a small open space, and people to play.

The Mixing Table (Mixer)So you want to be a ‘Disk jockey’ (DJ). That’s great; the more DJs out there in China the more the art will develop and progress. However before you invest loads of your hard earned cash in equipment make sure you know what you are looking at. There are mountains of free information on the internet to help you invest wisely, or alternatively you can pick up LBM each month and we will give you the knowledge you need to at least have some idea about what it takes to be a DJ and what equipment you may need. This month we are starting right at the basics with what you would typically expect a mixing table (mixer) to have? Below is a brief description to get you started. GainGain is used to affect the power that is associated with the output and clarity of the sound which in its very, very most basic form can to some extent be associated to volume control. The gain should be set as high as possible without clipping (when the amplifier is pushed to produce a signal beyond its power capabilities) or distorting (sounding fuzzy) the music normally indicated by a flashing light on the mixer. Equalizer or EQ Depending on the mixing table there are two types of possible equalizer parametric or non-parametric equalizer. To keep things simple the equalizer is used to boost frequencies of irregular sounds to make them sound correct (most commonly grouped frequencies being bass, mid and treble).Volume SlideThe volume slider allows you to change the volume which goes to the main mix. PFL buttonPFL stands for pre-fader-listening. If you push this button you will get the complete signal in your headphone/monitor speakers regardless to where your volume fader is located. BalanceBalance controls how much signal you hear in the left or the right channel (left right speaker or headphone) for stereo channels. For mono channels pan is used instead of balance, to direct the mono signal to the left or to the right. AUX SendsThese are the buttons that change the volume of the channels going to other areas for example an effects unit. Mute buttonMute buttons mutes the sound completely to the AUX sends, main mix and sometimes to the monitoring equipment depending on the kind of mixing table.Volume indicator Indicates the pre-listening or depending on mixer main-signal volume level. Main volumeThe Main volume changes the volume coming out of the main speakers.

Phones volumeControls the volume sent to your headphone. Monitor volumeChanges the volume sent to the monitor speakers.Cross faderAllows you to cross over from one signal to another between two channels

辅助旋钮这些旋钮可以控制该通道信号发送给其他辅助输出口的信号量（如效果单位）

哑音按钮哑音按钮完全消除输送至辅助发送，主输出推子的信号，有时根据混音器的不同还会消除发送至监听设备的信号。

Taste / 味道The Mojito incorporates several different flavors: rum, mint and lime juice. However, depending on the amount of sugar used and whether Sprite or soda water is used as the mixer, the sweetness of the drink can vary.

History / 历史Cuba is the birthplace of the Mojito. Legend has it that the Mojito can actually be traced back to the 16th century drink, “El Draque,” in honor of Sir Francis Drake. It was made with tafia, a primitive predecessor of rum, whose harsh taste had to be hidden with mint and lime. If this really is the origin of the Mojito, it could be classified as one of the first cocktails ever made.

Method / 配方Step 1: Place half a lime (chopped into eighths), eight mint leaves and a tablespoon of sugar into a mixing glass and gently muddle the ingredients together.

Step 2: Fill your cocktail shaker two-thirds of the way up with ice and add 2 oz. of clear rum.

Step 3: Place the mixing glass and cocktail shaker together and shake well until ingredients are mixed.

He plays regularly at the JZ Club (www.jzclub.cn) and is the music director at the JZ School (www.jz-school.cn). He has previously resided in Beijing, where he performed regularly and taught at the Midi School of Music and the Beijing Contemporary Music Institute, and Boston, where he did his graduate work in composition and jazz performance at the Longy School of Music and the New England Conservatory. The Lawrence Ku Septet recently recorded and released its first CD "Process" in 2007 and has been featured at the Helsinki Jazz Festival, Beijing Ninegates Jazz Festival and the Shanghai International Jazz Festival. He also leads his trio, a funk-groove band called the Red Groove Project and is part of The Far East Quartet, which recently released its debut recording "Something Real". Lawrence has had the honor of playing with such musicians as Joe Lovano, Gunther Schuller, Maria Schneider, George Russell and Ken Schaphorst. 吉他演奏家/作曲家顾忠山生长在美国加州的洛杉矶，但已在中国生活逾十年。自2005年底起，顾忠山移居上海并定期在JZ club演出，同时担任JZ school的音乐总监。早年他曾定居北京，驻演并执教于北京迷笛音乐学校和北京现代音乐学院。而在波士顿求学期间，他修完了隆基音乐学院和新英格兰音乐学院的作曲及爵士乐表演研究生课程。

Perhaps the most anticipated movie opening of the season, Watchmen is based on an extremely popular graphic novel by acclaimed writer Alan Moore and illustrator Dave Gibbons. The story is set in an alternate vision of Cold War America where a group of superheroes not only exists but has already been outlawed. One of the few heroes who refused to be unmasked and outlawed with the others stumbles upon what he believes to be a plot to eliminate him and his former superhero colleagues, for what greater purpose he doesn’t know.

At the same time, tensions between the US and the Soviet Union stretch to the breaking point as the Doomsday Clock, which signifies the likelihood of total war between the two powers, approaches midnight.

As with many movie adaptations of much-beloved written or illustrated source material, there has been fierce debate over whether the movie can or will live up to the expectations of its fans. Speculation was also fueled by the public disavowal of the movie project by Mr. Moore, who has disapproved of the adaptations of some of his past work, which includes V for Vendetta and From Hell.

Another central figure in these debates has been the director, Zack Snyder, best known for directing the gory action film 300. The questions surrounding Mr. Snyder center on his ability to render the source material in a way that is accessible for viewers not familiar with the graphic novel while simultaneously fulfilling the wishes of its many devoted fans.

The final controversy confronting the film was a lawsuit filed by 20th Century Fox against the distributor of the film, Warner Bros., over the rights to the material. After finally surmounting this obstacle in January, the film stands ready to open in theaters on March 6, 2009.

It is doubtful that the debates will be definitively settled, particularly after the revelation that the movie features an ending different from that of the graphic novel. But, sink or swim, the film promises to be the biggest movie opening since The Dark Knight. That is, until another superhero adaptation hits the screen…

X-Men Origins: Wolverine The game closely follows the movie’s storyline with a few added events, so if you enjoyed the movie you will enjoy the game play. Wolverine offers a fun way to slice and dice enemies into pieces, but after a while it starts to feel a bit too easy and not-so-thrilling boss fights can leave you wanting more.

Velvet Assassin If hiding in the shadows or slowly stalking your victims before giving them what they have coming is your cup of tea, then Velvet Assassin is your game. The game is based on a female assassin in war-torn France during WWII trying to disrupt the German war effort. The game play is fun, but linear, with only one way to approach targets. The gunplay isn’t the best, but in a game that relies on stealth, gun use is limited anyway.

Empire, like the other Total War games before it, offers the player a chance to rule an empire and fight to control as much as possible. Set during the 17th century, Empire is the first in the series to offer amazing sea battles as well as warfare on a larger scale. However, the game still has some problems with AI and because of its advanced graphics, the game requires a large amount of memory and a good video card.

Rarely has a TV show been audacious enough to try to capture nearly every facet

of a city from its darkest, lowest streets all the way up to its highest offices of power. Success at this task is rarer still, but this is the feat that The Wire has accomplished.The show may lack the cinematic flourish or philosophical musings of some of its other HBO brethren, but its shortcomings are more than made up for by its superb storytelling. Every part of the city is exposed, particularly those parts that usually appear only as headlines or in articles that seem to inevitably detail yet another tragedy that prompts head-shaking among readers, but little other action. The sources of the headlines and articles also come under the microscope as the methods and motives of the city's journalists are examined. The halls of power aren't neglected either as persistent police work reveals corruption at nearly every step of the political ladder. Though they often reflect these ugly realities of life in their failures, the spirit of the characters at the core of The Wire hint at the possibility of something bright that could one day be achieved. They don't ignore the beauty that already exists under the oppressive blanket of crime and corruption that seems to surround them, but more often they grasp at the vision of something much brighter. However, it is clear that until changes spanning all levels of society are made, these bright visions are just out of reach.

Camel Xiangzi is the story of a

rickshaw puller from Beijing in

the 1930s. The story follows his

life from an early age, detailing

the troubles and sorrows that

the working class often faced

in pre-revolutionary China.

These obstacles and misfortunes

gradually take their toll not

only on the rickshaw puller’

s optimistic attitude, but also

on his body and health. Several

of the incidents depicted in the

book are pulled from real life

and much of the description of

the daily life of a rickshaw puller

come from the author’s close

contact with many real-life

pullers. Any reader looking for

a street’s-eye view of life for

a working-class Chinese person

before the Second World War

should give this book a try.

The Family

by: Ba JinIn The Family, Ba Jin paints a detailed

portrait of an upper class Chinese

household, focusing on the three sons

of a powerful family. The story follows

their struggles against the cultural and

familial binds that tied the members of

Chinese society at the time. The tyranny

of the feudal family and the heartlessness

of arranged marriages come into sharp

focus as each character eventually

encounters these “invisible barriers” of

society. Though invisible, these barriers

affect and change the three brothers in

ways that they couldn’t imagine when

they were young and hopeful. The

subtleties and intricate workings of their

feudal Chinese household are gradually

revealed, as is the author’s disdain for

the strict rules and absolute power of the

head of the family. The Family is a good

study of China’s transition from feudal

societal and familial values to more

modern ideals.

Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite, but more popularly known as Kaka is generally consider to be one of the top professional players football has to offer and a significant contributor to the Brazalian national team and Real Madrid C.F. He won the ‘Ballon d’Or and FIF World Player of the Year awards in 2007 and he is the youngest ambassador of the United Nationas’ ‘World Food Programme’.

Born on April the 22 1982, Kaka began training at a young age. He played for the Sao Paulo youth team where even as a minor his potential shone through that he would become one of football’s biggest stars.

Aged seventeen the Turkish side Gaziantepspor offered Kaka a place, giving him the opportunity to enter European football however due to the 1.5 million doller request by Sao Paulo the deal was canceled.

Kaka continued to play for Sau Paulo gaining experience and working his way up the age ranks. Unfortunately at eighteen he suffered a poolside accident fracturing his back and almost ending his football career. He believes God was accountable for his miraculous recovery and now donates one tenth of his annual salary to the Brazilian Church. After recovering Kaka continued to play for Sau Paulo for one more season, before being scouted by AC Milan and bought for 8.6 million dollars.

At Milan Kaka contributed to the team’s success wining the 2003-2004 Italian league and later the 2006-2007 champions league. Finally in 2009 a deal was drawn moving Kaka to his present home at Real Madrid.
