Litter Production of Mixed Deciduous Forest at the Maeklong Watershed Research Station

Phanumard Ladpala

Abstract

The objective of the present study was to investigate litter production of a mixed

deciduous forest, carried out at the Maeklong Watershed Research Station, Kanchanaburi province.

Twenty our 1 x 1 m2 litter traps were set up in a 1 ha permanent sample plot established for the study

of vegetation structure and dynamics. Data were collected monthly from June 2003 - May 2005. The

mean annual litter production was 8.54 tons/ha. The total litter productions were 8.79 and 8.28

tons/ha in the first and second year, respectively. A reduction of 5.80% litter production was probably

due to occurrence of forest fire, which indicated as a significant factor affecting litter production. The

data gained in this study, together with aboveground biomass data, would be useful for estimation of

net primary production (NPP) and carbon sequestration in this mixed deciduous forest.
