    INTRODUCTION

Information related to technical knowledge ishumongous in this information technology age. Theknowledge includes classical theory, principle, understanding, know-how, philosophy, andtechnology that researchers and engineersdeveloped and accumulated over years until up-to-date research outputs and new inventions of a

particular field of interest. In general, this pool ofknowledge is termed as literature. With this, researchers and engineers are able to save theirprecious time and resources NOT to reinventing thewheel; without any strong justification to repeat thework/experiment/procedure that had been donepreviously. Depending on current technology, literature in electronic and hardcopy format caneasily be obtained and accessed using appropriatetools and techniques. The main challenges here are(1) to identify the genuine and reliability of theliterature and (2) to convert those humongousliteratures to useful knowledge that eventually

benefits to the user. In this training course, theimportance of literature review leading to form usefultechnical knowledge will be presented in an easy-to-follow manner.

    COURSE OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, participants will beable to:

    i. Define the terms literature and literaturereview.

ii. Explain the importance of literature review.

iii. Determine the genuine and reliable literature.iv. Perform effectively literature review via

    systematic way.

    v. Correlate literature with intended knowledge tosolve technical issues.

    COURSE METHODOLOGY

This course is conducted in a seminar room. Eachparticipant will receive a set of course materials.

    COURSE CONTENTS1. Introduction.

    2. What is literature and literature review?

    3. Importance of literature review.

    4. Who should perform the review?

    5. How to determine the genuine and reliable

    literature.

    6. Duration of performing literature review.

    7. Output of literature review.

    8. Systematic procedure to conduct literature

    review.

    9. Relationship of Literature output knowledge

    problem.

    COURSE CO-ORDINATOR

ASSOC. PROF. DR. IR. CHEONG KUAN YEW

Kuan Yew Cheong was born in Ipoh,Perak (1972) and received the B. Eng(1st Hons.) in Materials Engineeringfrom Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM),Malaysia in 1997. After graduation, heworked for two years as a project

engineer and quality assuranceengineer in a project managementcompany and a semiconductor-devicemanufacturing factory in Malaysia.

End of 1999, he decided to pursue his postgraduate study(M.Sc.) after being awarded a Fellowship under the AcademicStaff Training Scheme from USM. After completion his M.Sc. inMaterials Engineering (Thin Film Technology) in 2001, hecontinued his Ph.D. in the School of MicroelectronicEngineering, Griffith University, Australia and the degree wasawarded in 2004. This study was fully sponsored by AustralianResearch Council, USM, and Griffith University PostgraduateResearch Scholarship. In 2005, he was awarded a Certificate ofTeaching and Learning from USM.

Now he is serving as an Associate Professor at the School ofMaterials & Mineral Resources Engineering, USM. He isteaching under- and post-graduate courses related to fabricationand characterization of engineering & electronic materials anddevices for more than 8 years. Dr. Cheongs main research areais on semiconductor device fabrication, electronic packaging, and characterization. The outcomes of his research have beenpublished in more than 100 high-impact-factor journals and 3book chapters. Due to his expertise in wide-bandgapsemiconductor-based device fabrication technology, for the pastsix years, he has been invited three times as a Visiting Scientistto Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI), Korea. He has also being invited as an Invited Speaker and KeynoteSpeaker in International Conference on Electronic Materials2010 (ICEM 2010) - International Union of Materials Research

Societies (IUMRS), Korea, CIE & IEM International Seminar onElectrical, Electronic and Energy Saving 2010, Taiwan, andInfineon Technologies (Kulim) Sdn Bhd (IFKM) TechnicalSymposium 2010, Malaysia, Surface Engineering 2011 atBangkok, Thailand, and Collaborative Conference on CrystalGrowth on Dec 2012 at Florida USA. Dr Cheong has served asa reviewer for numerous referred journals and theses examiner. He has reviewed more than 350 manuscripts and now servingas an Advisory Editorial Board Member of Materials Science inSemiconductor Processing published by Elsevier Science B.Vand Associate Editor of Physics Express published by SimplexAcademic. He is also a Professional Engineers in MaterialEngineering discipline under Board of Engineers, Malaysia.

Outside university, he is very active in professional and

community activities. He is a member of Materials ResearchSociety (USA). He was the honorary treasurer for ElectronMicroscopy Society, Malaysia for year 2005/2006. Since 2005,he has been elected as one of the Ex-comms of the Institute ofElectrical, Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Component, Package, and Manufacturing Technology (CPMT) Society and ElectronDevice Society (EDS), Malaysia Chapter. In addition, he was theChairman of the electronic engineering technical division (eETD)under The Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) from 2009 to2012 and now is the Advisor of the technical division. He hasbeen appointed as a Council Member of IEM and a StandingCommittee on Qualification/Admission andExamination/Training.

For the past years, he has involved in organizing a number of

local and international conferences and being invited to chair afew technical sessions in those conferences. Dr Cheong, who isa certified PSMB Trainer, has been delivering technical trainingcourses for local and multinational electronics industries for thepast 5 years and more than 400 engineers and researchershave benefited from those courses.
