Independent/Guided Practice
• A one day regional event in which students compete individually in the following categories:
• Boys and Girls Essay• Boys and Girls Extemporaneous• Boys and Girls Dramatic Interpretation• Boys and Girls Solo• Girls Trio• Boys Quartet
• Region winners will compete in the State Literary Meet for the title!
•What is Literary Meet?
State Competition
Regional Competition
• Students should bring several sheets of notebook paper and a blue or black ink pen.
• Essay may not exceed 600 words.
Boys and Girls EssayCompeting students have two hours to write an essay over either
a literary topic or current event topic.
• Students choose a topic ripped from the headlines.
• Competitors will have fifteen minutes to compose their speech.
Extemporaneous Speaking
• Students memorize and rehearse a monologue from a piece of work of literary value and perform this for judges.
• No props, sound effects, or costumes are allowed.
• Movement is not limited.
• Competitors are allowed to give a brief introduction to their piece.
