Literacy in Reception becoming a writer and reader. It’s not all about Phonics!
To become a reader and writer there are many components that come before phonics.
Language and communicationIn Reception we not only focus on literacy (reading
and writing) we focus on the key areas of communication and language.
Speaking and listening are vital skills children need to develop in order to live successful lives in society.
Listening, understanding and speakingThey are key skills for children developing their
ability to read and write.
What you can doTalk to them!Model and expect good listening.Encourage the understanding and use of new vocabulary.Sing songs, rhymes and read poems, enjoying the rhyme

Stages of development
Talking for writing – “In order to become a writer, children must develop transcriptional skills of handwriting, spelling and punctuation; and the must first develop compositionalskills; by finding a creative and expressive voice of their own which they can communicate using the transcriptional skills of writing.” Julie Cigman
Lets play a game!
Writing at school Mark making opportunities Physical development for writing Letter formation Segmenting for writing Tricky words Encouraging independence and adults modelling writing Helicopter stories Purposeful writing and making it real! Using daily routines and enabling environment Range of exciting resources and flexible opportunities to write. ‘Have a go’ books Listening to children and carefully observing, linking to the then and now!
Writing at home Let them see you writing, notes, shopping lists, letters! Do not spell everything out for them, let them do it Encourage independence and be accepting of their writing Helicopter stories Don’t copy write – we don’t want children getting the message that writing is
something YOU can do but they can’t Writing can happen anywhere! A motivated writerIs tuned in, has a reason to write, sees writing as a useful and natural part of every day life and finds writing non-threatening
Phonics! A New Vocabulary! Phonics – the learning of letters and sounds Phoneme – the sound a letter makes – smallest unit of sound Grapheme – the written letter Blending – running sounds together to make a word Segmenting – breaking a word up into its component sounds Tricky words – words that cannot be decoded using phonics Digraph - a sound made with two letters eg. sh ai oi Phonetically plausible – written phonetically that it can still be read although it is
spelt incorrectly eg. torl werk cabij (phonics screening test – year 1)
