Literacy and Science
Good Scientists and Good Reader & Writers...!
1. Ask questions!
2. Make predictions!
3. Search for information!
4. Test ideas!
5. Summarize and represent findings!
6. Monitor understanding

Some Main Points From the Resources
Not intended to stand alone, but to supplement inquiry based science lessons (Pg 20 Even More Picture-Perfect Science)!
Generally set up using 5Es

Strategy You Could Use: Interactive Read Aloud
in ScienceBefore Reading!
1. Intro book (title, author, genre)!
2. Preview Text (picture walk)!
3. Set a purpose, “Let’s read to find out...”
During Reading:!
1. Read expressively (model fluency)!
2. Pre-arranged questions related to your purpose & focused on a reading skill. Not too many.!
3. Wait time
After Reading:!
1. Invite response (“What did you think of the story?”)!
2. Ask kids, “why” and ask them to “revisit the text.”

Explore Time!With you team...!
Take a look at your science plans and pick a unit you want to focus on!
Explore your materials!
Make a plan on how to use Trade Books most effectively. !
• How might you relate the books to your science unit? $
• What literacy questions will your ask in your IRA?
