HEADTEACHER’S MESSAGE TO PARENTS

On Wednesday we had a very special event: the first time students from Lister went into their new Houses. 60 students from Year 10 who will be Form Captains, and reps from other forms in the school, first heard a presentation from senior staff on how the House system will work and they went into their new House groups to discuss how each House would welcome the new Year 6s who are coming in to their Houses. It was great to see how enthusiastically the students from different years worked together with their House teams and the creative ideas they came up with for Induction Fortnight. Other students will be keen to find out what House they are going to and this information will be coming out in the next week. We will then be having House assemblies in the week beginning 11th June before the Year 6s arrive and we have our House launch on 18th June. I was also very pleased this week to welcome a number of parents to a Parents’ Forum as advertised in the last Lister News. We hope that this Forum can meet again after half term and that we will be able to move towards setting up a new parents’ association, with the aim both of giving parents more information about what is happening in the school and finding additional ways for parents to support the improvements of the school. As you all know, we are determined that Lister should become an excellent school and the school of choice for everyone in the local community. The support of parents in spreading the good news about Lister is really important for this. REMINDER – school will be closed to students on Friday 1st June except those who have exams. During the half term break Ms Maynard from Deaf Support will be attempting the 3 Peak Challenge climbing Ben Nevis (the highest point in Scotland), Scafell Pike (the highest point in England) and Snowdon (the highest point in Wales). She is doing this to raise funds for St Joseph’s Hospice. We wish her well in this

challenge.

The Queen came to the throne on 6 February 1952 and her coronation took place on 2 June 1953. She celebrated her Silver Jubilee (25 years) in 1977 and her Golden Jubilee (50 years) in 2002. BOOK SIGNING OF INDIA DARK BY AUTHOR KIRSTY MURRAY 17TH MAY 2012

On Thursday 17th May 2012 the LSC held a very important event organised by Ms Patel, an author was able to visit Lister. We were lucky enough to get an award winning author Kirsty Murray, who came all the way from Australia just to meet us and sign copies of her book, India Dark. Kirsty told us that her favourite author is Michael Morpego. When she left high school she worked in a bookshop called the ‘The Book Barrel Book Shop’ but she wanted to do more with her life than just work in a bookshop. So Kirsty decided to become an author, for those who are interested in writing books here is some good advice from Kirsty . ‘You don’t have to write about what you know, use your imagination and never give up’. So far Kirsty has written nine novels and her ninth one is called India Dark, the age group this book is aimed at is 12-17. The first book Kirsty ever wrote was in Australia and she was thirty nine years old. It was non-fiction and was called ‘Man Eaters and Bloodsuckers’. Kirsty loves writing books about fantasy and adventure, so for those people who love fantasy and adventure Kirsty Murray is the perfect author for you. One of the books she wrote was based on circus acts and Kirsty told us that when she was younger she always wanted to work in the circus, so to get some experience for writing her book she worked in the circus for a few days. When Kirsty was in high school she did well in English and her teacher encouraged her to ‘never give up on anything you love’. Before Kirsty left our school her last words were “It was absolutely amazing meeting such great kids” We all enjoyed meeting Kirsty. Kirsty’s helper, Jane, said “It was a delight being here”. Ms Patel organised a free raffle for a copy of the book and Kirsty picked the winning ticket. A student librarian Darshanna said, “It was amazing meeting a world famous author and this has given me confidence in writing books” Ms Patel said “ I think everything went as planned” and “I think everyone enjoyed having Kirsty Murray coming to our school and we hope to have many more’. The four student journalists have had their first meeting to talk about what is expected of them. This is what they wrote about themselves on their applications.

My name is Adrees Abbas and I am in Year 8. I have many dreams in life and I like doing different activities. Last year I was a student librarian and this year I hope to become a part of Lister News. I have many qualities, academic and non-academic, for example, whichever work/homework I get given I complete it whole-heartedly. Another quality I have is that I have knowledge about the type of news Lister students want. I also know how to write a newspaper article as I experienced it in Year 6 and I have found it interesting ever since. Some of the qualities I have are; patience, effort, concentration, good behaviour, never giving up and commitment.

My name is Czarina J Ubasa. I am now 14 years old and I am smart, funny and very, very colourful. I love writing, in fact writing is one of my hobbies. I mostly like to write reviews and give opinions to people. My favourite subject is music, I play two instruments in school, violin and keyboard. I adore music because it gives me a thrill and it also helps me gain the confidence for shows and assemblies in school. Every year I go to America. I always dream about going to High School there because of the teen movies and television shows I watch. I also go to other countries, such as Switzerland and France but America for me is way more better because I have cousins there. I hope you consider me to be one of your new journalists.

SPANISH CONFERENCE: HOW TO GET AN A OR A* REVISION DAY

On 20th February Ms Lake took a group of Year 10 students to a Spanish Conference in Holborn to get tips from examiners on how to get an A or A* in Spanish. The students were well behaved and a credit to the school. Janaai King 10C participated in the singing competition. She sung I Buen Hecho Chica and won a prize. Ms Lake

Lister Year 10 Spanish students went to the City Temple for a Spanish Conference which would hopefully help us gain a high grade in our GCSE Spanish exams.

There were many students from other schools arriving at the conference like us, they came to improve their Spanish. We were taught A-A* grade topics and how to form long sentences in Spanish whilst speaking. Spanish books were provided for us so we could learn more and understand how to get higher grades. Overall I liked the conference because it was for educational us and using tips given in the conference I knew that my Spanish would improve. Tohura Roquib 10L

BOOK REVIEW HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON BY CRESSIDA COWELL

A little boy, called Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III was the son of the king of the land. The little boy, who everyone thought was useless, had a chance to prove himself by going along with some tribesmen to get his own dragon. But he must be careful as he ventures along to find a dragon that would obey him because there are many dragons that are dangerous. Hiccup finds his dragon but finds out that he is totally useless and lazy and that his dragon is very small for his kind compared to the other dragons which are big and strong. Hiccup is forced to enter a dragons competition with his dragon. Hiccup names his dragon ‘Toothless’ and starts to train his dragon but nothing happens as Toothless refuses to do as he is asked. Finally Hiccup persuades Toothless to train by catching fish. He nearly wins his competition but after there was a fight between Tootless and another dragon, Firebreath, Toothless falls and everyone thinks he is dead. But Toothless isn’t dead, although they have lost the competition. There are more consequences ahead ……….. Cristian Avel 8T

Last month, the ECASP Programme (being piloted in Newham schools) came to Lister School for the first time. Year 7 students were treated to two hours of Fencing , BMX Biking and Athletics on a rotation basis. The programme, organised by Ms. Strachan and Newham Sports Development, was a big hit with our students, particularly the BMX bike sessions!!

Ms Strachan: London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer

On March 19th (following a rigorous selection process, involving tens of thousands of people), Ms. Strachan (herself a double Olympian) was officially announced as one of the Olympic Torchbearers. She was selected by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) “due to her passion for sport and her ability to spread happiness and inspire others”. Ms. Strachan will carry the torch in the London Borough of Wandsworth on the 23rd July, in front of thousands of spectators and millions of television viewers all over the world. The time and exact location will be revealed approximately four weeks before the day. “I feel really honoured to be chosen as one of the Torchbearers and be part of the London 2012 Team”, said Ms. Strachan.

Last month, Ms. Strachan was invited to Curwen Primary, (one of our feeder schools), to give a talk in one of the school’s assemblies about her experiences as an Olympic Fencer. The students were able to ask Ms. Strachan questions which included ‘what was it like to live in an Olympic Village’ and ‘how did you feel when you marched around an Olympic stadium during the Opening Ceremony’. The students were then treated to a fencing session led by Ms. Strachan. “I was really impressed by the questions posed by the Year 6 Curwen students, many of whom will be coming to Lister in September”, said Ms. Strachan.

OLYMPIC VISIT TO CURWEN

West Ham United produced a stunning display to return to the top flight as they beat Blackpool 2-1 in a nervous encounter under the arch of Wembley in the play-off final. After a slow start from both teams West Ham soon got into gears and took the lead midway through the first half when Carlton Cole lashed onto a long ball from Mark Noble to smash home the lead in the top corner. Blackpool came close and had chances from the likes of Matt Phillips and Tom Ince hitting the post. Tom Ince finally got the deserved equaliser similar to Cole’s goal in the first half. Ince curled an effort into the corner of the net. West Ham pressed on as the time was shrinking and the match heading to extra time until the 87th minute. Portuguese winger, Ricardo Vaz Te tapped in the rebound from close range to send West Ham back to the Premier league at the first attempt. West Ham did it the hard way as midway through the season they were top but an awful streak led them to a play-off place instead of automatic promotion. They comfortably beat Cardiff 5-0 on aggregate and Sam Allardyce was relieved to be in the Premier League with two different teams, former club Bolton and now West Ham. West Ham are now 6/1 odds on to go straight down next season but they also now have an estimated 90 million pounds in their pockets to build up their team. Report by Shah Rahman 8I
