WHAT IS A HEAT PUMP?

I N V E RT E R P R I N C I P L EBWT heat pumps are fitted with a frequency variator capable of adjusting the compressor and fan speeds.

On the contrary to the compressor and fan(s) in conventional On/Off heat pumps that run at a fixed speed (50 Hz), those in the BWT heat pumps run at variable speeds (11 to 100 Hz), thus allowing the machine to automatically adapt to the heating demand and climatic conditions.

While the outdoor temperature is low, or while the heating demand is high, the Power Inverter® compressor and fan(s) run at high speed, between 50 Hz and 100 Hz).

Inversely, while the heating demand is low, or while the heat pump is running at temperatures around the set point, the Inverter® compressor and fan(s) will run at low speeds (between 11 Hz and 50 Hz).

At low speeds, BWT heat pumps’ COP is improved by 30 to 40 %.

Running at low speeds, the Inverter® compressor and fan(s) are almost noiseless and provide optimal yields. In addition, the service life of the BWT heat pump compressor, and other components, is extended.

BWT POWER INVERTERheat pumpoperation

This is one of the best yields available on the market.

A heat pump exploits a thermodynamic principle to capture heat calories from ambient air and then transfer them to swimming pool water.

For every kilowatt of electricity it consumes, a BWT heat pump delivers up to 8.5 kW of heating power, fulfilling the requirement for an ‘A’ rating according to the ‘Directive Technique Piscine N°10’ (pool directive pertaining to heating issued by the FPP - French federation of pool professionals )..

C A S E O F A M OTO R I S E D V E H I C L EAs can be seen in the table opposite, a car travelling at 90 km/h will take 17 minutes longer to travel 100 km than than a car travelling at 120 km/h.

On the other hand, fuel consumption at 120 km/h (8 l/100 km) is much higher than it is at 90 km/h (5.6 l/100 km).

As a result, although the car travelling at 90 km/h took 17 minutes longer to cover 100 kilometers, it used 2.4 l less fuel.

C A S E O F A BW T H E AT P U M PThe table above shows that, to generate the 18 kW required to maintain the pool water temperature, a BWT heat pump running at a reduced heating power of 9 kW, will run for an hour more than an 18 kW On/Off machine but, due to its particularly high COP, it will only consume 3.39 kW compared to 4.39 kW for the On/Off device.

While a BWT heat pump runs at water temperatures hovering around its set point, the power it requires, and hence its electrical consumption, drops.

To maintain the water temperature, a BWT heat pump runs for a longer time than a conventional On/Off heat pump.

However, because it runs within ranges where it achieves a superior COP, the final analysis reveals that it consumes less electricity than a conventional heat pump.

The concept behind the savings achieved by a BWT heat pump is easy to grasp when compared to the case of a motorised vehicle.

Supplemental heating or overizing is necessary

O P E R AT I N G P R I N C I P L EBWT M.Z.I. heat pumps compensate extremely low outdoor air temperatures by injecting hot gas, stored in an additional bottle, directly at the compressor.

The injection of a liquid/ gas mixture at the compressor makes it possible to achieve a lower return temperature while maintaining a high COP. This flash injection ensures that the compressor has enough refrigerant fluid to prevent overheating which would automatically cause the compressor to slow down to protect itself.

The decrease in mass flow rate entails a corresponding drop in low pressure that is influenced by the outdoor temperature (the lower the outdoor temperature, the lower the low pressure).

The heating power generated by an On/Off heat pump decreases as the outdoor air temperature falls. The graph below clearly shows that this type of machine provides more and more power as the air temperature increases.

Inversely, the pool’s heating demand gradually falls for the same reason.

Hence, during the months of June and July, in a European climate, a conventional 25 kW heat pump (at 15°C) can generate up to 27 kW power, even though the pool only needs 8 kW.

On the contrary, a BWT heat pump adapts its power, its consumption and its noise level to the exact requirements of the pool throughout the various seasons.

A BWT M.Z.I. heat pump maintains 71 % of its heating capacity with outdoor air temperatures as low as -15°C. It is truly an all season machine purpose designed for the heating of covered pools that are used year round and for which it is necessary to maintain a nominal heating power.

A C O U S T I C C O M F O RTThe acoustic power of an On/Off heat pump remains constant, even while the machine is running at water temperatures around the set point.

On the contrary, a BWT heat pump adapts the operating regimes of its compressor and its fan(s) to match the actual heating demand of the pool, notably as the water temperature approaches the set point.

The evaporator in a BWT heat pump has a very large surface area: air can circulate more freely, more slowly thus reducing whistling.

All BWT heat pumps (except for the M.P.I. 100M, M.P.I. 160M and M.Z.I. 160M models) are fitted with Mitsubishi Scroll Inverter® compressors, the recognised reference in terms of acoustic performance.

Mitsubishi Electric Inverter® compressors are acoustically insulated.

To hear a BWT heat pump, you really have to listen carefully.

This feature is particularly appreciated in situations where the heat pump must be installed near your residence or that of your neighbours.

In order to appreciate the acoustic performance of BWT heat pumps, a scale is provided below that allows you to compare the tolerance limits of various devices and everyday events.

It may be seen that, even running at 100% capacity, BWT heat pumps fall well within common, acceptable tolerance limits.

EXAMPLE ILLUSTRATING THE DIFFERENCE IN COP BETWEEN A BWT HEAT PUMP AND AN ON/ OFF HEAT PUMP

At full speed (100 Hz), a BWT heat pump delivers a COP equivalent to that of an On/Off heat pump operating at 50 Hz.

However, as the pool water temperature approaches the set point, the frequency of rotation of the BWT heat pump’s compressor and fan(s) will slow, thus generating a significant increase in COP, while lowering the acoustic power.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF A COP?

Coefficient Of Performance.

The COP measures the performance of a heat pump in terms of energy (Extract from DTP N°10 - Pool directive pertaining to heating issued by the French federation of pool professionals, FFP).

The COP is the ratio between the heating power, delivered as heat to the pool, and the total electrical power consumed by the heat pump.

START-UP OVERCURRENTS

BWT heat pumps feature an acceleration ramp, a characteristic of Inverter® technology, that avoids overcurrents on start-up along with their inherent negative impact on electrical and electronic devices in the home.

The machine’s electrical current requirement is lower than that of an equivalent On/Off device, this means that cable cross sections and thermal protection can be reduced.

ELECTRICAL CURRENT REQUIREMENT

BWT heat pumps’ electrical requirements have been reduced through the use of electrical current rectifiers.

REVERSIBLE HEAT PUMPS

All BWT heat pumps are reversible as standard.

A BWT heat pump can be set to heat or cool pool water.

This feature is particularly useful in very hot regions where it is necessary to maintain the pool water at a pleasant temperature, and to lower and maintain the water temperature in aquaculture tanks used to rear and store fish.

WHAT IS A HEAT EXCHANGER?

A heat exchanger is a device that transfers heat from a hot body to a cold body or vice versa.

The larger the surface area, the better the yield. For this reason, Procopi fits all BWT heat pumps with spiral plate exchangers that offer a much larger heat exchange surface area than tube exchangers.

PURE TITANIUM, SINGLE CHANNEL, SPIRAL PLATE HEAT EXCHANGER

The titanium, spiral plate exchanger is a Procopi exclusive.

Its large surface area guarantees excellent performance data.

Made of titanium, it is compatible with all water treatment methods available, notably salt water electrolysis.

M A I N C H A R A C T E R I S T I C S O F A N I N V E RT E R H E AT P U M P I N I T S VA R I O U S O P E R AT I N G M O D E S :The BWT M.Z.I heat pumps automatically select the operating mode best suited to the current weather and operating conditions:

▪ Low speed: the heat pump operates in this mode when it is close to the set point (within approximately 1°C). BWT M.Z.I. heat pumps can operate at three speeds below 50 Hz (Step 1, 2 and 3). At these speeds, BWT M.Z.I. heat pumps offer a COP and sound levels that cannot be achieved by conventional On/ Off heat pumps.

▪ Cruising speed: This is the operating speed of a standard On/ Off heat pump, it corresponds to a compressor speed of 50 Hz, or Step 4.

▪ High speed: BWT M.Z.I. heat pumps operate at one of three speeds greater than 50 Hz (Steps 5, 6 and 7) during the initial heating ramp or when weather conditions are harsh.
