1987   

Brookline Chamber Music Society Scholarship (First awarded in 1987) 

 This  scholarship  is  presented  to  a  graduating  senior  of  Brookline High  School  who  is  recommended  by  the  faculty  of  the  Music Department to the Scholarship Committee of Brookline High School. The student selected must show promise  in  the area of music and plan  to  continue  a  musical  education  in  an  accredited  college  or conservatory. This scholarship may also be applied to the tuition of a recognized summer program in music.   

  

1989   

Edward McHugh Sportsmanship Award (First awarded in 1989) 

 This  award  is  presented  to  a  graduating  senior  for  outstanding sportsmanship;  not  necessarily  to  the  best  athlete  but  to  a  player demonstrating  the  best  team  spirit;  one  who  always  gave  110% effort  when  the  team(s)  he  or  she  was  a  member  of  went  on  to victory or down to defeat.   

  

1987   

Paul C.  Kelleher Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1987) 

  Paul  Kelleher,  graduate  of  Brookline  High  School,  Class  of  1976, died  as  a  result  of  an  automobile  accident  in  1986.  While  at Brookline High School, Paul was a student  in good standing and a member of the Varsity Football Team. In his memory, Paul's family and  friends  have  set  up  a  scholarship  tuna  to  provide  an  annual award to a graduating senior at Brookline High School.   

  

2001   

The 21st Century Fund Scholarship (First awarded in 2001) 

 The  Brookline  High  School  21st  Century  Fund was  established  in 1998  by  Brookline  High  School  alumni/ae  and  Brookline  citizens who share a  love  for  "BHS and a desire  to  serve The High School.  The 21st Century Fund is raising a $10 million endowment for The High School to support innovative programs in four mission areas: 1)  Achieving  academic  success  for  all  students,  2)  educating students  in  the  knowledge  and  appreciation  of  diversity  that  is essential  to  good  citizenship, 3) Maximizing  the potential  benefits of  the  information/communication  technology  revolution,  4) Maintaining  an  excellent  faculty  through  mentoring  and professional  development  opportunities.  This  scholarship  is  given to a student, who in the judgment of the faculty and administration has demonstrated an ideal of service to the BHS community. 

  

1941   

The Abbie W. Deane Scholarship (First awarded in 1941) 

     This  award  is  a  scholarship  for  graduates  of  the  High  School  attending Radcliffe or Simmons Colleges, provided by the will of the late Charlotte A. Hedge  in memory of Abbie W. Deane, a  teacher  in  the High School  from 1861 to 1887.  

  

1994   

The Ada B.  Deal Scholarship (First awarded in 1994) 

 

This scholarship is given in the name of the late Ada B. Deal, former teacher  at  Brookline  High  school.  Its  purpose  I  to  aid  a  worth graduate of Brookline High School  to  further his/her education at an  institution  of  higher  1earning.  This  scholarship  is  granted  to  a graduate who has given evidence of the potential to succeed.  

  

2006   

The Agnes Rogers Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

This  scholarship  is  being  established  by  the  Bay  State  Federal Savings Charitable Foundation in honor of Agnes Rogers’ long term dedication  to  the  founding  and  continued  success  of  the  Senior Center  as  well  as  enhancing  the  quality  of  life  for  seniors  in  the Brookline  Community.    This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a graduating senior who has successfully participated in the “Careers in Aging” or “SHOP” program at the Brookline Senior Center.  

  

2008   

The Alla Denisenko Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2008)  

 

This  scholarship  is  established  by  former  Brookline  High  School students  to  honor  the      memory  of  Alla  Denisenko.        Alla  was Brookline High School’s liaison to the Russian   community through the Jewish Community Center.           She was a wonderful, thoughtful and  dedicated woman who  cared  deeply  about  the  BHS  students.    This scholarship is to be awarded to a Russian woman with a good heart and a compassion for humanity as Ms. Denisenko.  

  

1978   

The Allan Sidd ‐  Kiwanis Club of Brookline Scholarship 

       (First awarded in 1978)     

 A  scholarship  provided  by  the  Kiwanis  Club  of  Brookline  and  former friends  and  colleagues  of  the  late  Mr.  Allan  Sidd,  Brookline  Town Treasurer  from  June,  1973,  until  the  time  of  his  death  on  February  21, 1977. This scholarship is awarded to a member of the graduating class of Brookline  High  School  who  has  distinguished  himself  by  unusual involvement in civic or political activities, and/or participated in political campaigns  for  elective  office,  and/or  participation  in  political  causes intended to further public interest. 

  

1991   

The Alumni Association Scholarship (First awarded in 1991) 

 

This  scholarship  is  given,  thanks  to  the  generosity  of  the  Alumni Association  of  Brookline  High  School,  to  a  graduating  senior who exemplifies  the  spirit  of  Brookline  High  in  his/her  service  to  the school,  and  who  intends  to  further  his/her  education  at  an institution of higher learning.   

  

1983   

The Andrew Warren Lurie Scholarship (First awarded in 1983) 

 

This  scholarship  was  established  in  memory  of  Andrew  Warren Lurie by his family and friends for the primary purpose of annually awarding a  sum of money  to  a  graduate of Brookline High School who has achieved academic excellence during his/her high  school years, has attended SWS or has been accepted to The University of Chicago.   

  

1976   

The Ann E.  Macdonald Scholarship (First awarded in 1976) 

 

A  perpetual  scholarship made  possible  through  the  generosity  of the colleagues and friends of Miss Ann E. Macdonald, who rendered dedicated  and  distinguished  service  to  the  youth  and  the community of Brookline  for 27 years,  from 1948 until  the  time of her  retirement  in  1975.  This  scholarship  is  to  be  given  to  that member of  the graduating class of Brookline High School who has been accepted at a post‐secondary school and who best exemplifies the  attributes  of  Miss  Macdonald:  Dedication,  high  moral  arid ethical values, and a love of the arts.   

  

1986   

The Anne Geoghegan Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1986) 

 

A Scholarship given in memory of Miss Anne Geoghegan, a teacher in the Brookline Public Schools from 1941 until 1985. Anne taught at Baker and Lincoln Schools before transferring to the High School where  she  taught  an  ungraded  class  of  developmentally  delayed students  for  nineteen  years.  This  scholarship  is  to  be  presented annua1ly  to  a  member  of  the  graduating  class  of  Brookline  High School  who  is  either  entering  into  the  special  education  teaching field  or who  has  volunteered  or  shown  particular  interest  in  that area.   

  

1991   

The Arthur P.  Murphy, Jr .  Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1991) 

 

This scholarship is awarded to the son or daughter of a Brookline Police Officer  (or  other  Town  Employee)  who  exhibits  good  citizenship  and scholastic ability, and who has been accepted to a college or university.  

  

1983   

The Astrid “Sandy" Clifford Scholarship (First awarded in 1983) 

 

A  scholarship  funded  by  the  colleagues  and  friends  of  Astrid "Sandy" Gifford in her memory. Sandy Clifford was a crossing guard for seventeen years assist to Lincoln School and a vital member of the  community.  This  scholarship  is  presented  to  a  graduating senior  at  Brookline  High  School  who  is  also  a  graduate  of  the Lincoln  School,  who  intends  to  further  his/her  education  at  an institution of higher learning.   

  

1956   

The B.H.S.  Graduates Scholarships (Renamed the Allen Meyer Scholarship) 

(First awarded in 1956)  

The  Class  of  1934  started  a  Graduates  Scholarship  Fund  to  which additions have been made by the members of succeeding classes and by members  of  the  High  School  Staff.  These  scholarships  are  awarded  to members of  the graduating class on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and participation in school activities.   

  

1975   

The Babette H. Raphel Memorial Award (First awarded in 1975) 

 

An  award  made  possible  through  the  generosity  of  former  colleagues, friends, and students  in honor of  the  late Babette H. Raphel,  elementary school teacher from 1943 to 1948 and 1955 to 1965, and Principal of the John D. Runkle  School  from 1965 until  the  time of  her  death  on  June 3, 1974. This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a member  of  the  graduating class  of  Brookline  High  School  who  is  also  a  graduate  of  the  John  D. Runkle  School.  The  recipient  shall  be  selected  by  the  Brookline  High school  Scholarship  Committee  and  must  have  demonstrated  good citizenship, consistent academic effort, and must have been accepted to a post‐secondary school.   

  

1994   

The Barbara Bader Delmonaco Scholarship (First awarded in 1994) 

 This  scholarship  is  presented  to  a  graduate  of  the  Pierce  School who  will  be  graduated  from  Brookline  High  School  with  a  3.0 average and who plans to pursue further education at an institution of  high  learning.  The  scholarship  is  given  in  memory  of  Barbara Delmonaco  who  was  a  reading  teacher  at  Pierce  School  for  21 years.   

  

1995   

The Bay State Federal Savings Charitable Foundation Scholarship 

(First awarded in 1995)  

This scholarship began to commemorate Bay State Federal Savings Bank's  75th  anniversary  at  4  local  branches,  including  Brookline. After  the  celebration  the  Bank  decided  to  keep  the  scholarship going.  Bay  State  Federal  Savings  Charitable  has  been  generous enough  to  provide  scholarships  the  last  2  years  and  hope  to continue to do so. The Scholarships for 2000 are to honor "Marion "and Harry Dubbs.   

  

2006   

The BHS Dance Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

The BHS Dance  Scholarship  is  being  established  by  the  Brookline High School Dance Department.   The scholarship  is  to be awarded to a graduating senior who has a strong interest in dance and who plans  to  continue  to  study  dance  after  graduating  from Brookline High  School.    This  scholarship  can  also  be  used  by  an undergraduate for intensive summer study of dance.  

  

2005   

The BHS Senior Paper Award (First awarded in 2005) 

 

This  book  award  is  given  by  the  BHS  English  department  in recognition  of  outstanding  achievement  on  the  Senior  Paper,  the capstone  assignment  of  every  student's  English  experience  at  the high school.  

  

1985   

The Bonnie Gee Memorial Scholarship Award (First awarded in 1985) 

 

This  scholarship  is  awarded  to  a  senior  at  Brookline  High  School who  shows  a  love  for  learning,  a  person who  comes  to  school  in pursuit  of  knowledge,  not  just  as  a  required  task.  The  recipient should  care  about  other  people;  this  care  should  be  expressed  in community  service.  The  person  must  be  a  pursuer  of  the  goals he/she set for himself/herself.   

  

1973   

The Boston University Scholarships (First awarded in 1973) 

 

Two scholarships made available to Brookline High School by the Board of Trustees of Boston University to be based on need, up to full tuition, the scholarships ally to any undergraduate school or college of the university for which the candidate is qualified. These scholarships, to be awarded annually, are part of an effort to maintain close cooperation between Boston University and neighboring communities.  

  

1979   

The Bradley G.  Kennedy Memorial Scholarship        (First awarded 1979)  

  This  scholarship  is  made  possible  through  the  generosity  of  the family  and  friends  of  the  late  Bradley  G.  Kennedy,  a  graduate  of Brookline  High  School,  Class  of  1972.  This  scholarship  IS  to  be awarded annually to a student of the graduating class of Brookline High School who has excelled or 4isPlayed outstanding qualities of leadership  and  service  to  the  school  and  community  and  who  is planning to further his/her education.  

  

2004   

The Brookline Boxing Club Scholarship (First awarded in 2004) 

 

This scholarship  is established by Paul Epstein, Faculty Advisor of the Brookline Boxing Club.   The scholarship  is  to be awarded  to a graduating  senior  who  has  participated  in  the  Brookline  Boxing Club  and  demonstrated  discipline,  industriousness  and  good character inside and outside the gym.

The Brookline Educators Association Scholarship 

(First awarded 1963)  

These  scholarships  are  provided  by  the  teachers  of  Brookline  for deserving  members  of  the  graduating  class  of  Brookline  High School,  preference  to  be  given  to  those  graduates  who  plan  to become teachers.   

  

1963   

The Brookline Educators Union William Hibert Scholarship 

(First awarded 1963) (renamed and awarded in 2004) 

 

These scholarships are provided by the educators of Brookline for deserving  members  of  the  graduating  class  of  Brookline  High School, with first preference to be given to those who plan to work in the field of education, and second preference to those who plan to work in a helping profession.  

 

1999   

The Brookline Golf  Association Men’s Division Scholarship           

(First awarded in 1999)  

The  Brookline  Golf  Association  Men’s  Division  Scholarship          A scholarship made  available  to  a member  of  the  girls  or  boys  golf team through the generosity of the Brookline Golf Association. The graduating  senior  who  receives  this  scholarship  will  have  mown good sportsmanship on the golf course and express a strong desire to learn all he or she can about the game of golf.  

  

1971   

The Brookline Youth Concerts Scholarship (First awarded in 1971) 

 

A  scholarship  made  possible  through  the  generosity  of  the Brookline  Youth  Concerts  to  aid  a  Brookline  High  School  senior who  has  demonstrated  excellence  in  music  and  who  has  been admitted to an institution of high education in the field of music.  

  

2003   

The Cambridgeport Bank Social  Service Scholarship         

(First awarded in 2003)  

An annual scholarship to be granted to a graduating senior who has made an outstanding contribution in the area of social service in the community or school who plans to attend an accredited college. 

  

1981   

The Carmen P.  and Mary Rinaldi Scholarship (First awarded in 1981) 

 A  perpetual  scholarship  provided  by  colleagues,  friends  and student,  particularly  the  Brookline  High  School  Class  of  1980,  to honor  Carmen  Rinaldi,  with  extraordinary  vitality,  he  rendered distinguished  service  at  Brookline  High  School  as  a  teacher, Assistant Housemaster,  and Housemaster  from 1951  to  1963  and as Headmaster from 1961 to 1980. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a member of the graduating class of Brookline High School who  has  been  accepted  at  a  post‐secondary  school  and  who demonstrates  the special qualities of Carmen Rinaldi: Enthusiastic effort, scholastic excellence and active scholarship.  

  

1979   

The Cavindish Club of Boston Scholarship (First awarded in 1979) 

 

The Cavindish Cub of Boston was founded Fifty‐three years ago and has  two purposes:  Social  and philanthropic. This  scholarship  is  to be  awarded  annually  to  a  needy  Brookline  High  School  graduate, irrespective  of  race  or  color, who  is  accepted  at  a  post‐secondary school.  The  Brookline  High  School  Scholarship  Committee  will award  the  scholarship  to  a  student  who  has  maintained  an outstanding record of citizenship and scholarship at Brookline High School.   

  

1997   

The Charles A.  Fetonte Scholarship (First awarded in 1997) 

 

This  Scholarship  was  established  by  the  family  and  friends  of Charles A. Fetonte to honor his memory. Mr. Fetonte had a lifelong love of  language that he used in his work as an interpreter for the U.S.  Army  in  North  Africa  during  World  War  II  and  as  an international  banker  in  France  and  the  U.S.  He  was  a  resident  of Brookline. This Scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior at  Brookline  High  School  who  excels  in  a  foreign  language  or English as a second language for the purpose of high education.

The Charles F.  Nayor/Class of 1931 Scholarship (First awarded in 1983) 

 

A  scholarship  provided  by  the  class  of  1931  of  Brookline  High School, awarded to a deserving graduate of Brookline High School who intends to further his/her education at an Institution of higher learning.   

  

1955   

The Charles H. Taylor Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1955) 

 

A  Scholarship  provided  by  the  Edward  Devotion  Parent‐Teacher Organization,  in  memory  of  Charles  H.  Taylor,  Principal  of  Devotion School from 1906 until his retirement in 1948, for a graduate of the High School,  preferably  a  graduate  of  Devotion  School,  for  the  purpose  of higher education.   

  

1930   

The Charles W. Holtzer Scholarships (First awarded in 1930) 

 

Scholarships  for  excellence  in  fine  arts,  industrial  arts  and  music  are provided under the will of Charles W. Holtzer, a pioneering: manufacturer in the electrical industry, who organized and developed the Holtzer‐Cabot Electrical  Company  in  Brookline  ‐  A  man  wise  in  judgment,  an  able executive whose affection for his  fellow man was reflected in his gifts to the aged,  the  incapacitated and  the  children of Brookline. These awards are made to graduating seniors of Brookline High School.   Industrial Arts:    Music: 

  

   

The Charlie Lourie Memorial Award (First awarded in 2001) 

 

 The Class of 1958, along with the family of the late Charlie Lourie, established  this  scholarship  in  his  memory  to  honor  his accomplishments  in  the  field  of music.  The  scholarship  should  be awarded to a member of the graduating class who best exemplifies the qualities of musicianship, leadership, and devotion to music.  

  

2005   

The Charlotte and Jack Laven Scholarship (First awarded in 2005) 

 This scholarship is established by Mrs. Charlotte Laven in memory of her husband Jack Laven.   This scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating  senior  who  has  received  academic  support  in elementary  and/or  high  school  that  has  enabled/  her/him  to overcome learning issues.   This individual will have demonstrated determination and an appreciation of the importance of reading to successful  learning.    The  scholarship will  provide  funds  for books and materials necessary for college or a job‐related program.  

  

1984   

The Chinese Parents Committee of Brookline Scholarship       (First awarded in 1984) 

 

This  scholarship  is  awarded  to  an  Asian  student  who  is  a graduating  senior  at  Brookline  High  School  and  who  intends  to further his/her education at an  institution of higher  learning. This scholarship will be awarded annually.  

  

2004   

The Christina Gray Perseverance Scholarship (First awarded in 2004) 

 

The scholarship is established by Rev. Robert Gray and his children to honor the memory of his wife and their mother Christina R. Gray.  Mrs. Gray was a pharmacist and mother of three Brookline METCO children.  She died of breast cancer two weeks after the graduation of her eldest child  from the High School.   The scholarship  is  to be awarded  to a graduating senior of Brookline High School who has persevered despite challenges in his/her life. 

  

1980   

The Class of 1925 Alfred M. Vinton Scholarship (First awarded in 1980) 

 

This  award  is  the gift  of  an anonymous donor  in memory of  "The Class  of  1925"  and  is  awarded  to  a  well‐rounded member  of  the graduating  class  of  Brookline  High  School  who  has  contributed greatly to the High School during his/her four years.  

  

2002   

The Class of 1936 Scholarship (First awarded in 2002) (one‐time lump sum) 

 A  scholarship  award  for  a  graduating  senior.  This  scholarship  is offered by the Class of 1936 who wished to honor a member of the Class of 2002 with funds left over from their reunion.   

  

1937   

The Class of 1937 Scholarship (First awarded in 1988) 

 

This scholarship shall be presented to an individual selected by the Scholarship Committee who shall be a graduating senior in need of financial  assistance  and  who  has  accepted  admission  to  an accredited institution of higher learning.  

  

2007   

The Class of 1956 Scholarship (First awarded in 2007) 

 

To  commemorate  their  50th  Class Reunion,  the  class  of  1956  has established  an  annual  scholarship  to  be  awarded  to  a  graduating senior.    The  scholarship  should  be  awarded  to  a  student  who through  academic  excellence,  athletics,  and  leadership  has demonstrated  the  qualities  and  moral  character  which  best exemplifies and represents the graduating class.  

  

1959   

The Class of 1959 ‐ Carmen P.  Rinaldi Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2000)  

A  scholarship  for  this  year  and  next  year  from  the  Class  of  1959. The Class of 1959  celebrated  their 40th Class Reunion  in 1999.  It was  their  wish  to  honor  their  beloved  Packard  Housemaster, Carmen  Rinaldi,  with  a  scholarship  in  his  name.  It  should  be awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  who  exemplifies  the  qualities  of Carmen Rinaldi.  

  

1982   

The Class of 1982 Scholarship First awarded in 2007 (one‐time lump sum) 

 

The  Class  of  1982  is  awarding  a  one‐time  scholarship  in  conjunction with  their  25th reunion festivities.  This scholarship is to  be  awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  who  will  continue  his/her education  at  an  institute  of  higher  learning.    The  Class  of  1982 awards  this    scholarship    in  memory  of    John  Delaney,      Jordan Kaplan,  Andrew Spunt,  Delia Lynn Yskamp and Tanya  Zdanovich.   

  

2003   

The Class of 2003 Scholarship (First awarded in 2004) 

 

This scholarship is donated by the Class of 2003 to be presented to graduates  of  the  class  of  2004  who  intend  to  pursue  a  post‐secondary collegiate experience.  

  

2000   

The David Eliot Levy Scholarship           (First awarded in 2000)    

   This perpetual scholarship, given by Alan W. Damon, is to honor his companion and friend of 40 years, David Levy. Mr. Levy graduated from  BHS  in  1953  and  never  ~  where  he  learned  "his  love  of writing,  books  and  the  spoken  word.  This  scholarship  should  be awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  who  excelled  in  creative  writing and/or journalism, and who like David, showed sincere enthusiasm about receiving an education at Brookline High School. 

  

1977   

The Dennis E.  Murphy Jr.  Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1977) 

 

An annual scholarship made possible through the generosity of the family  and  friends  of  the  late  Dennis  E. Murphy  Jr.,  a  graduate  of Brookline  High  School,  Class  of  1969,  and  a  graduate  of  Boston State College. This scholarship is to be awarded to a member of the graduating class of Brookline High School who has been accepted at a  post‐secondary  school  and  who  wishes  to  continue  their education in the field' of human services.  

  

1962   

The Dollars for Scholars Scholarship Program      (First awarded in 1962) 

 

This  scholarship  is  awarded  to benefit  a  student  or  students with funds  gathered  through  fundraising  within  the  Brookline  Public Schools.  

  

2002   The Dorothy Heffernan Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2002)  

On the occasion of her retirement, the family and friends of Dottie Heffernan  established  this  scholarship  in  her  honor.  It  should  be awarded  to  a  young  woman  in  the  graduating  class  who  has demonstrated  enthusiasm  and  high  academic  accomplishments  in the Business/Finance program.   

  

2003   

The Dr.  Bertram H. Holland Class of 1945 Alumni Scholarship         

(First awarded on 2003)          

This is an annual scholarship given by the Class of 1945 in honor of the  late Dr. Bertram H. Holland.   Dr. Holland served the Brookline Public Schools  in an outstanding manner as  teacher, Housemaster and Headmaster until his retirement  in 1969.     The recipient shall have expressed an interest, like Dr. Holland, in science. 

  

1997   

The Dr.  Delbert Moyer Staley Scholarship (First awarded in 1997) 

 

Mr.  Agostino Merenda  has  graciously  donated  funds  to  honor  the lifetime  accomplishments  of  the  late  Delbert  Moyer  Saley.  Mr. Staley  was  the  founder  and  president  of  the  Staley  College  of Oratory, also known as the Staley School of the Spoken Word. This was a co‐educational, non‐profit institution in Brookline until 1957. This  scholarship  is  to be awarded  to a graduating  senior who has financial  need  and  is  interested  in  pursuing  the  study  of  and development of their oratory Skills, drama or English.   

  

1926   The Dr.  Ethel M. Jenkins Scholarships 

(First awarded in 1926)  Two  scholarships  provided  by  the  Heath‐Baldwin  Parent‐Teacher Organization  in  memory  of  Dr.  Ethel  M.  Jenkins,  Principal  of  the Heath School from 1953 until her death in 1969 for graduates of the Heath  School  and  the  High  School  who  have  been  outstanding  in scholarship.   

  

2001   

The Dr.  James F  .Walsh Scholarship (First awarded in 2001) 

 To mark the many years of dedicated service to the children of the Brookline Public Schools, a generous anonymous donor has set up this scholarship in honor of Dr. James F. Walsh's retirement. It is to be awarded to a graduating senior(s) who has worked dilent1y to attain high academic achievement. The recipient should be a good school citizen either in leadership capacities, involvement in school activities or in community service.   

  

1923   The Dr.  John E.  Corcoran Scholarship 

(First awarded 1923)  

A Scholarship provided by  the Parent‐Teacher Organization of  the Pierce School in honor of the late Dr. John E. Corcoran, Principal of the  Pierce  School  from  1937  until  his  retirement  in  1969,  for  a graduate of the Pierce School and the High School. The recipient is selected on the basis of scholarship, citizenship, and participation in school activities.   

  

2003   

The Edith A.  Pistorino Scholarship (First awarded in 2003) 

 This  is  an  annual  scholarship  in  memory  of  Edith  A.  Pistorino inaugurated  by  Barbara  Davis  (Class  of  ‘54)  and  the  executors  of the  Edith  A.  Pistorino  Estate.    This  scholarship  shall  be  given  to assist  a  student  of  immigrant  background  who  possesses  clear educational career goals.

The Elaine Lombardi Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

This  scholarship  is  being  established  by  the  Lombardi  family  in honor  of  Mrs.  Elaine  Lombardi.    Mrs.  Lombardi  has  been  a math teacher at BHS for many years.  Her passion for teaching, combined with  continuous  support and encouragement of her  students, was only matched by her evident love of them.  This scholarship is to be awarded  to  a  member  of  the  graduating  class  who  has  been  in standard  level  math  courses,  preferably  beginning  with  Math  I Intensive,  during his/her high  school  career.    This  student  should possess qualities of honesty, kindness and strong moral character.  He/she  should  demonstrate  perseverance,  tremendous  effort, achieve  good  grades  and  have  a  desire  to  learn.    The  student receiving  this  scholarship  may  or  may  not  continue  his/her education.

The Elgie Clucas Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1958) 

 A  scholarship  in  her  memory  provided  by  the  Parent‐Teacher Organization of  the Michael Driscoll  School  in honor of Miss Elgie Clucas,  Principal  of  the  school  from  1935  until  the  time  of  her retirement  in  1965,  for  a  graduate  of  the Michael  Driscoll  School and the High School who has been outstanding  in scholarship and who  has  been  admitted  to  an  accredited  college  or  university  for the ensuing year.

The Eliot Mothers'  Club Scholarship (First awarded in 1963) 

 

A scholarship provided by the Eliot Mothers' Club for a member of the  graduating  class  of  Brookline  High  School  who  is  also  a graduate  of  the  Heath  School  and  who  excels  in  scholarship  and citizenship.  

  

2008   The Ellen Kaplovitz SWS Community Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2008)  This  scholarship  is  established  to  honor  Ellen  Kaplovitz  , Coordinator  of  the  School‐Within‐A‐School  Program  at  Brookline High  School.    Ms.  Kaplovitz  began  her  career  at  Brookline  High School as  the SWS Coordinator until her retirement  in  June, 2007.  She also was guidance counselor  to her students.    In addition, Ms. Kaplovitz  served  as  a member  of  the  BHS  Scholarship  Committee for  the  past  twenty‐eight  years.    This  scholarship  is  being established by the senior class of 2006 to honor Ms. Ellen Kaplovitz on  the  occasion  of  her  retirement.    This  scholarship  is  to  be awarded annually to a member of the graduating class of SWS  and who best understands, supports and carries forward the principals and practices of democratic education. 

  

2000   

The F.  Meade Reynolds Scholarship (First Awarded in 2000) 

 This  scholarship  was  established  by  friends,  colleagues,  parents, former students and family members of Meade Reynolds upon the occasion  of  his  retirement.  Mr.  Reynolds  was  a  math  teacher, houseteacher and Housemaster at BHS for 34 years. This award is for  a  graduating  senior  who  best  exemplifies  the  qualities  of  Mr. Reynolds. Mr.  Reynolds  had  a  lasting  impact  on  the  students  and families  he  worked  with  and  he  was  always:  able  to  challenge students to reach their fu1l potential. He did this with a keen sense of humor as well as a friendly and positive attitude. He served as a role  model  for  those  he  worked  with  and  led  while  at  Brookline High School. This student should have demonstrated these qualities in  the  classroom,  athletic  fields  or  as  a  leader  in  extra‐curricular activities.

The Florence L.  & Mortimer Gryzmish Scholarship 

(First awarded in 1975)  

 Mrs. Abraham Pinanski and Mr. Victor Cohen, trustees of the Florence L. & Mortimer Gryzmish Trust, have established a scholarship in memory of the  late Mr. and Mrs. Mortimer Gryzmish, who had a genuine  interest  in the  town  of  Brookline  where  they  resided  for  many  years  and  who devoted  their  lives  to  philanthropic  works  in  the  interest  of  humanity. The scholarship is to be awarded to a member of the graduating class of Brookline High School and the recipient is to be selected by the Brookline High School Scholarship Committee.

The Frances Rogovin Scholarship (First awarded in 1996) 

 This  scholarship,  created  by  Fran  in  lieu  of  a  retirement  party  to celebrate her twenty years of service at the High School, is awarded to  a  graduating  senior  with  learning  disabilities  who  has participated in the Learning Skills Program.   

  

1999   

The Freyda P.  Koplow Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1999) 

 This  Scholarship  was  established  by  the  family  and  friends  of Freyda  P.  Koplow  who  passed  away  in  January  1999.  This scholarship is to honor this remarkable woman's life, celebrate her values, and the importance of Brookline in her life. Ms. Koplow was a  MA  State  Representative  from  Brookline  from  1955  to  1967, Brookline  Town  Meeting  Member  from  1955  to  1967,  MA Commissioner of Banks  from 1967  to 1975,  and  a member of  the Presidential  Commission  on  Electronic  Funds  Transfer.  All  of  Ms. Koplow's  sons  graduated  from  BHS  as  well  as  two  nephews  and two  nieces.  This  scholarship  is  applied  for  in  the  junior  year  by filling out an application and answering an essay question.  

  

2006   The Hannah Goddard Daughters of American 

Revolution Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) (one‐time lump sum) 

 This scholarship is given by the Hannah Goddard Daughters of the American Revolution.    In  honor  of  the Town of Brookline's  300th anniversary,  the Daughters of  the American Revolution sponsored both  a Tercentennial Ball  along with  an occasion  commemorating the  installation of  stain glass windows honoring  John and Hannah Goddard.  The  proceeds  from  these  events were  used  to  establish this  one‐time  scholarship.    This  scholarship  is  to be  awarded  to  a graduating senior who plans to major in (American) history.  

  

2000   

The Harold Huxtable Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2000) 

  The Harold Huxtable Memorial Scholarship was established by Harold's mother, Elizabeth Crolius. Together with her daughters, they wished to remember Harold's accomplishments in his life. Harold was a member of the class of 1976, he was a tremendous athlete who enjoyed numerous accolades for his accomplishments playing football, but his struggle academically was long and often painful. He was very successful after graduating from college.  The recipient should be someone who had the same accomplishments on the athletic field r woo may have had the same academic struggles as Harold. Harold Huxtable died suddenly in April of 1998, he was 40 years old.  

  

1965   The Harold Silverman Memorial Award 

(First awarded 1965) (as a trophy) 

 

The  Harold  Silverman Memorial  Award  has  been  in  existence  for more  than  30  years.    Mr.  Silverman  was  a  paratrooper  during World War II.  He was seriously wounded during a combat mission after  landing  on  the  ground.   Mr.  Silverman  later  succumbed  as  a result  of  these  injuries.    This  memorial  award  is  given,  upon  the recommendation  of  the  baseball  coach,  to  the  most  outstanding baseball player of the year.  

  

1974   

The Harry and Marion Dubbs Music Scholarship (First awarded in 1974) 

   This  scholarship  is  to  honor  the memory  of  the  founder  and  first conductor  of  Brookline  Youth  Concerts,  Mr.  Harry  Dubbs,  and  is made  possible  through  the  generosity  of  the  Brookline  Youth Concerts. This scholarship is to be awarded to a senior at Brookline High  School who  has  distinguished  himself/herself  in music, who has been accepted for post‐secondary education.   

  

1975   

The Harry J .  Dowd Memorial  Scholarship (First awarded in 1975) 

 

A  scholarship  awarded  from  the  Harry  J.  Dowd  Memorial Scholarship  Fund,  created  by  Robert  J.  and  Patricia  Dowd  in memory  of  his  father,  a  long‐time  resident  of  the  Town  of Brookline. The scholarship  is  to be awarded annually  to a student enrolled  in  the  High  School  who  plans  to  attend  college  or  post‐secondary  school,  either  educational  or  vocational.  The  recipient should be a minority  student of American birth. The student  shall have demonstrated need for financial assistance. The selection shall be made by the Brookline High School Scholarship Committee with the  recommendation  of  a  staff  member  acting  as  liaison  for  our foreign students.  

  

1974   

The Helen V.  O'Brien Scholarship (First awarded in 1974) 

 An annual scholarship made possible through the generosity of the Brookline Educational  Secretaries Association  in honor of  the  late Miss  Helen  V.  O'Brien,  Business  Agent  for  the  Brookline  Public Schools  from 1923 to 1975. The recipient of  this scholarship shall be a member of the graduating class of Brookline High School who will pursue  studies after graduation  in business administration or related fields, who is deserving of financial assistance, and who best exemplifies  Miss  O'Brien's  qualities  of  honesty,  loyalty, perseverance and impeccable moral and ethical values.

The Henry J .  Downes Scholarship (First awarded in 1968) 

 

A scholarship made possible through the generosity of Mr. Harold J. Moffie, Class of 1946, and donations by members of the faculty and friends  in memory of Henry  J. Downes,  teacher of mathematics  at Brookline High School since 1939 and Faculty Manager of Athletics from  1961  to  the  time  of  his  death  on  February  5,  1970.  The scholarship is awarded to a member of the football Team and who has been admitted to an accredited institution of higher education.

     The Food Service Award (First awarded as Food Service Award in 1984) 

 The Henry Kennison Food Service Scholarship       

 (renamed the above in 2005)        

This  award  is  to  be  presented  to  a  graduating  senior  at  Brookline High School  who  has  successfully  completed  Food  Service  courses  at  an advanced  level  and  who  has  achieved  at  least  a  “B”  average  in  these courses.    This  recipient  shall  also  have  displayed  intent  to  pursue  post‐secondary education in the Food Service field.

2007   

The Jacob Kliman‐Trimble Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2007) 

 

This scholarship is being established by the family of  Jacob Kliman‐Trimble to honor the memory of their son Jacob who died suddenly from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  Jacob grew up in Brookline attended Pierce Elementary and Brookline High  Schools.  Had  Jacob  lived,  he would have  graduated with  the  class  of  2007. This scholarship  is  to be presented  to  the graduating BHS student who has done the most to turn his/her life around.          

  

2007   The James C.  Cradle Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2007)  

This scholarship is being established by the senior class of 2006 to honor Mr.  James C. Cradle on  the occasion of his  retirement.     Mr. Cradle  began  his  career  at  Brookline  High  School  as  a  teacher  of history  in  1972.        He  also  served  as  Assistant  Housemaster  in Packard House moving on to Associate Dean until his retirement in June,  2007.   Mr.  Cradle was  the  recipient  of  the Ernest R.  Caverly Award in 1992. This scholarship is to be given to a member of the senior  class  who  demonstrates  the  qualities  Mr.  Cradle  has exemplified and promoted in his years of service at Brookline High School; respect for all individuals, belief in everyone’s potential, and an  enduring  commitment  to  listening,  understanding  &  guiding others.  

  

2003   

The James E.  Cockfield,  Esq.    Scholarship (First awarded in 2003) 

 

This award is established by the Partners of Lahive & Cockfield, LLP to honor Mr. Cockfield as part of the firm’s 20th anniversary.     He is  a  founding  partner  of  the  firm. Mr.  Cockfield was  a  resident  of Brookline for fourteen years.  During that time, he served as a Town Meeting Member  from 1975 to 1979.   He also served the Town of Brookline as a member of the Personnel Board from 1979‐1999, of which he was Chair for ten years.  This scholarship is to be awarded to  a  graduating  senior  of  Brookline  High  School  who  exemplifies Mr. Cockfield’s commitment to community and public service.   

  

2005   

The James Jacoppi Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2005) 

(one‐time lump sum)  

This  scholarship  is  established  by  the  family  of  James  Jacoppi  to honor the memory of their son James, who died suddenly as a result of a viral infection in his heart during his senior year at Middlesex Community  College.    In  the  hopes  of  turning  a  tragedy  into something  positive  the  Jacoppi  family  founded  the  James  Jacoppi Memorial  Scholarship  knowing  that  this  is  something  that  James would  have  wanted.    James  enjoyed  mountain  biking,  camping, canoeing,  tennis  and  swimming,  but  most  important  to  him  was being with his  friends and  family.   He was a  caring,  generous and loving  person.      This  scholarship  is  given  to  graduating  senior  to further his/her education.  

  

1997   

The James M. Mattimoe Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1997) 

 

This  annual  scholarship  is made  possible  through  the  generosity  of  the family  and  friends of  the  late  Jimmy Mattimoe.  Jimmy was a member of the class of 1979 of Brookline High School who died of cancer at the age of 34.  This  scholarship  will  be  given  to  a  graduating  senior  of  the  High School who played on the Varsity Baseball Team, not necessarily the best player on the team, but one who showed a  love for the game like Jimmy did.   

  

1958   

The James W. Tonra Memorial Scholarships (First awarded in 1958) 

 

These  scholarships  are  awarded  annually  by  the  Parent‐Teacher Council  of  the William  H.  Lincoln  School  in  memory  of  James W. Tonra, a graduate of  the William H, Lincoln School  in 1090 for his interest  in  and  service  to  all  Brookline  boys  and  girls.   Mr.  Tonra was Chief of  the Brookline Police Department  from 1938  to 1959.  These awards are made to the boy and girl graduate of the Lincoln School who has maintained outstanding records of citizenship and scholarship at Brookline High School.

The Janet L.  Morris Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

This  scholarship  is  established  by  the  METCO  Parents’  Group  to honor Dr.  Janet  L. Morris  on  the  occasion  of  her  retirement.      Dr. Morris  served  as  the  METCO  Director  for  the  Brookline  Public Schools from 1980 until her retirement in 2005. The scholarship is to  be  awarded  to  a  METCO  graduating  senior  male/female  that plans  to  attend  a  Historically  Black  College  or  University immediately after graduation.   

  

2008    

The Jeremy S.  Kritzman Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2008) (One‐time lump sum) 

 The scholarship  is established by the family of  Jeremy S. Kritzman to  honor  the  memory  of  their  son  .Jeremy  was  a  Brookline  High School  graduate  of  2005  with  a  passion  for  the  dramatic  arts, especially comedy.   He was also gave the graduation speech at the 2005 BHS graduation.   This scholarship  is  to be awarded annually to a graduating senior (male or female) who plans to pursue drama studies in college. One who excels in the dramatic arts, particularly comedy, who also demonstrates a  commitment to community and public service.

The Joan Hertzmark Scholarship       (First awarded in 1993) 

 The Joan and William Hertzmark Scholarship 

 (renamed in both names in 2004)  

This  scholarship  is  to  be  presented  to  a  graduating  senior  at Brookline  High  School  who,  through  volunteerism,  competence, hard work and good citizenship, has demonstrated a dedication to achieving the goals of our democratic society.  Mrs. Hertzmark was politically  active  in  the  town  of  Brookline  and  served  as Chairperson  of  the  Brookline  Democratic  Town  Committee  from 1972 to 1992.   

  

1927   

The John A. Curtin Prizes in Citizenship ( First awarded in 1927) 

 

The  income  of  a  gift  provided  under  the will  of  the  late  John  A.  Curtin, accepted by  the  town  in March, 1925,  is used  to provide cash prizes  for Brookline  High  School  students  for  the  best  essays  in  English, "Particularly  concerning  civil  government  and  the  veils  of materialism." Mr. Curtin was a member of  the Board of Selectmen from 1906 to 1911, Brookline's representative to the Massachusetts General Court from 1912 to 1914, a member of the Brookline School Committee from 1915 to 1921, and State Senator from 1919 to 1920.  

  

1987   The John Doherty Memorial Scholarship Presented by the Brookline Coalition For 

Citizens With Disabilities (First awarded in 1987) 

 The  recipient  of  this  scholarship  must  be  an  educationally challenged handicapped graduating senior at Brookline High School who  has  been  accepted  at  a  recognized  educational  institute (college, vocational School). The selection of  the  individual will be done  by  the  Brookline  High  School  Scholarship  Committee.  The scholarship is presented in memory of John Doherty, past president of the Brookline Group for the Handicapped, Inc.   

  

1977   

The John P.  Phillips Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1977) 

 

An annual scholarship made possible through the generosity of the family, classmates and friends of the late John P. Phillips, a graduate of Brookline High  School,  Class  of  1975,  and  to  be  awarded  to  a  member  of  the graduating class of Brookline High School who has demonstrated interest and proficiency in the food service area and who plans to continue study in that field at a post‐secondary school.   

  

2002   

The José Ricardo Calleja Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2002) 

 

José  Ricardo & Isabella Maria Calleja Memorial Scholarship 

(renamed and awarded in both names in 2008)  

Ric  Calleja,  Spanish  teacher  at  Brookline  High  School,  established this scholarship in memory of his parents.  It is Ric’s wish to help a Hispanic/Latino  student  of  modest  means  to  have  educational opportunities that his parents never had.   This scholarship will be awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  of  Hispanic/Latino  background who  will  continue  his/her  education  in  technology  related  fields, culinary arts, or nursing  

  

1987   

The Joseph M. Tynan Jr.  Scholarship (First awarded in 1987) 

 A  scholarship  given  in  the  name  of  Joseph M.  Tynan  Jr.,  to  a  deserving Brookline High School senior. It is given to a qualified student, preferably a  relative  of  a  firefighter,  who  has  done  well  academically,  has participated in extra‐ curricular activities, and has displayed outstanding citizenship and character. Joseph M. Tynan, Jr. was a Brookline Firefighter who  was  permanently  and  severely  disabled  in  an  accident  during  the performance of his duty on November 23, 1982.  Firefighter Tynan passed away as a result of injuries on May 8, 2002.

The Joseph T.  Malinn Scholarship (First awarded in 1986) 

 

This  scholarship  was  established  by  the  family  and  friends  of Joseph  T. Malinn  to  honor  his memory.  It  will  be  presented  each year  to  a  graduate of Brookline High School who best  exemplifies the attributes of "Joey" MaIinn;  technical attitude, a sense of pride in  educational  accomplishments,  kindness,  compassion,  and  a strong desire to learn. Joseph T. Malinn was an outstanding human being.

The Julius Swartz Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1986) 

 

This  scholarship  is  given  in memory  of  Julius  Swartz,  a  long‐time citizen  of  Brookline,  town  meeting  member,  and  avid  tennis enthusiast.  This  scholarship  will  be  awarded  to  a  member  of  the graduating class of Brookline High School who was a member of the Tennis  Team  and  who  has  a  love  of  the  game  as  exemplified  by Julius Swartz.   

  

1984   

The K. Doris Kelley Scholarship (First awarded in 1984) 

 

This  scholarship  will  be  presented  annually  to  a  member  of  the graduating class of Brookline High School who is also a graduate of Baker  School.  The  recipient  shall  have  been  admitted  to  an accredited  institution  which  offers  post‐secondary  education preferably with the intention of furthering his/her education in the field of home economics or nutrition. The recipient shall exemplify the qualities of good Citizenship, leadership, and possess adequate scholarship.

The Karen W. Chase Scholarship (First awarded in 2001) 

 

On  the  occasion  of  Karen's  retirement  from  Brookline  Access Television.  This  scholarship  was  established  by  her  friends  and colleagues  to  honor  her  outstanding  and  dedicated  service  to Brookline Access Television and  the Town of Brookline. This one‐time scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior(s) who has shown  interest  in  community  service  and  is  in  need  of  financial assistance.

The Katherine Bradburn Schick Scholarship (First awarded in 1964) 

 

A  scholarship  provided by  the will  of  the  late George B.  Schick  of Brookline in memory of his sister, Katherine Bradburn Schick. The income  from  this  fund  "Shall  annually  be  given  to  a  graduate  of Brookline High School, who shall be considered most worthy, based on  scholarship,  extracurricular  activities  and  who  is  to  continue study at an institution of higher learning.   

  

1967   

The Katherine C.  Ginty Scholarship (First awarded in 1967) 

 

This award is given to a deserving member of the graduating class of Brookline High School who exemplifies worthy school citizenship and who has a good scholastic record. Mrs. Katherine C. Ginty was a former  Teacher,  Housemaster,  and  Guidance  Counselor  at Brookline High School.   

  

1971   

The Kendrick Memorial  (First awarded in 1971)  

 

A  perpetual  scholarship made  possible  through  the  generosity  of the late Dr. Thomas P. Kendrick, member of the School Committee from  1928  until  the  time  of  his  death  on March  27,  1970  and  its chairman  from 1952  to  1961  and  1968  to  1970.  This  scholarship commemorates Dr.  Kendrick's  extraordinary  interest  in  the  youth of Brookline and is to be awarded to that member of the graduating class  of  Brookline  High  School,  who,  in  the  opinion  of  the Scholarship  Committee,  best  combines  excellence  in  scholarship with excellence in athletic achievement.

The Kevin Gannon Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1989) 

 

The  recipient  of  this  award  shall  be  a  graduating  senior  at Brookline  High  School  who  has  an  interest  in  attending  post‐secondary  school majoring  in  culinary  arts  or  a  related  field with the understanding that, in the event a member of the current class does not apply,  a  former graduate of  the High School may receive the award.

The Lawrence School Awards (First awarded in 1948) 

 

Two awards made possible by  the graduates, parents and  friends of  the Lawrence School for two graduates of the Lawrence School and the High School with  the highest  scholastic  rating  at  the  time of  their  graduation from the High School, and said graduates to be entering college, and said money  to  be  given  for  the  purpose  of  purchasing  books  during  the students first year in college.

The Lee Herbert Auerbach Scholarship (First awarded in 1994) 

 

A Scholarship to perpetuate the memory of Lee Herbert Auerbach is to  be  given  to  a  graduating  senior  of  Brookline  High  School  who plans to pursue a career in political science.   

  

1984   

The Leona Wallenberg Bergstein Scholarship (First awarded in 1984) 

 

This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a  female  athlete  who  is  a graduating  senior  at  Brookline  High  School.  Leona  Wallenberg Bergstein  was  a  remarkable  athlete  in  the  Class  of  1931  of Brookline High School and a member of the National Honor Society.  

  

1972   

The Lougee‐Kiwanis Scholarship (First awarded in 1972) 

 

A  perpetual  scholarship  given  in  memory  of  the  late  Mr.  Gilbert Lougee,  a  prominent  and  distinguished  Kiwanian,  make  possible through the generosity of the Brookline Kiwanis Club, overseers of a bequest by Mr. Lougee. This bequest states that the interest from the  principal  be  used  as  a  scholarship,  on  a  yearly  basis,  for  a deserving  Brookline  High  School  student.  This  student  should display qualities of good citizenship, have adequate scholarship, be deserving  of  financial  assistance,  and  have  demonstrated outstanding service.

The Louis M. Insoft Scholarship (First awarded in 1992) 

 

This scholarship is given in loving memory of Louis M. Insoft be his family. Mr.  Insoft  emigrated  from Russia with  his  family when  he was  sixteen  years  old  to  become  a  successful  businessman  and  a leader  in die community. This award  is given  to a  first generation American who is a graduate of Brookline High School so that Louis M.  Insoft will  be  remembered  and  his  ambitions  and  dreams will live  on  through  the  students.  The  recipient  should  have  a  high regard  for  self  improvement  and  family  ties  and  plan  to  further his/her education in Business at an institution of higher learning.

The Louise A.  Levenson Scholarship (First awarded in 1958) 

 

A scholarship awarded  from the Louise A. Levenson Science Scholarship Fund  in memory  of  Louise A.  Levenson,  a member  of  the  class  of  1958, who  died  on  February  25,  1958.  This  award  is made  to  a  girl  who  has shown both interest and proficiency in Biological Science during her high school course at Brookline High School and who plans to continue study in that field.

The Mabel Prescott Bailey Scholarship (First awarded in 1948)  

 A scholarship provided by the will of the late Olive C. Fisher in memory of her  life‐long  friend,  Mabel  Prescott  Bailey,  teacher  in  the  High  Schoo1 from  1905  to  the  time  of  her  retirement  in  1935,  to  assist  a  worthy graduate  of  Brookline  High  School  or  former  student  of  outstanding attainments in obtaining a college education in four years.   

  

2005   

The Marian L.  Cronan Scholarship (First awarded in 2005) 

(one‐time lump sum)  

This  scholarship  is  established  as  a  one‐time  scholarship  by Mildred C. Hayden, personal representative of the Estate of Marion L.  Cronan.    Mrs.  Cronan  was  a  teacher  at  Brookline  High  School, Department  Chair  of  the  home  economics  department,  as  well  as the Director of Food Services for the Brookline Schools.  She retired in  1973  after  thirty  years  of  service  for  the  Brookline  School Department. This  scholarship  shall  be  given  to  a  student who has demonstrated  enthusiasm  and  high  academic  accomplishments  in the Business Program.   

  

2002   

The Marisa Amy Shea Scholarship (First awarded in 2002) 

 This scholarship was established by  the William H. Lincoln School community,  family and  friends of Bill  and Barbara Shea.  It honors the young  life of Marisa Amy Shea who in her  lifetime displayed a Spirit  of  determination  and  a  gift  for  love  and  friendship.  The recipient will be someone with the same attributes as Marisa, and who  may  have  faced"  a  personal  challenge  while  maintaining exemplary academic achievement.   

  

1983   

The Mary K. Rouillard Award (First awarded in 1983) 

 

A Scholarship Provided to a member of  the Brookline High School graduating  class by  the Class of  1970 of Brookline High School  to honor Mary K. Rouillard, a former teacher of English and a former Housemaster  at  Brookline  High  School.  Ms.  Rouillard  is  an outstanding humanitarian dedicated to the education of children.   

  

1979   

The Mary Taylor Walsh Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1979) 

 

 Annual  scholarship  made  possible  through  the  generosity  of  the family of Mary Taylor Walsh who served as a distinguished member of  the  Brookline  High  School  Physical  Education  faculty  from September,  1944  to  June 1975.    This  scholarship  is  to  award  to  a graduating  woman  who  has  been  accepted  to  a  four  year  post‐secondary  school.  The  recipient  of  this  award must  have  excelled generally  in her academic  learning at Brookline High School; must have participated actively in physical education and extracurricular activities  in  the  physical  education  department,  and  must  be planning to major m physical education at the undergraduate level.  

  

1941   

The Maude Young Scholarship (First awarded in 1941) 

 

The  income  from  a  fund  provided  by  the will  of  the  late Maude  Young, teacher  in  the business department of  the High School  from 1908 to  the time  of  her  retirement  in  1934.  This  award  is  used  for  the  benefit  and assistance of deserving students in the stenographic program who will be graduated from Brookline High School.   

  

2008   

The Maureen Young Nursing Scholarship (First  awarded in 2008) 

 

This  scholarship  is  being  established  by  the  family  of Maureen  S. Young  to  honor  her  memory.    Ms.  Young  was  a  resident  of Brookline  from  1975  until  her  recent  passing.    Despite  many medical  challenges  in  her  life,  Ms.  Young  continued  to  persevere. She  taught  nursing  courses  at  two  colleges, worked  as  a  nurse  at Children’s Hospital.   Ms. Young also worked as  a  school nurse  for the Brookline Public Schools.  This scholarship is awarded to either a male  or  female  interested  in  pursuing  a  career  in  nursing.    The recipient  should  exhibit  qualities  which  exemplify  community concern, volunteerism and the wish to help others.   

  

1986   

The Max M. Tisser Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1986) 

 

A  scholarship made  possible  by  the  family  and  friends  of  the  late Max M. Tisser,  long‐time  town member and activist  for  the public interest.  This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a  member  of  the graduating class of Brookline High School showing academic ability, ethical  values  and  community  interest.  The  graduate  will  pursue studies  such  as  political  science,  urban  affairs  or  raw  at  a  post‐secondary school that will lead to a career in the public interest.   

  

1998   

The Maxine Dadourian Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1998) 

 

Friends,  family  and  co‐workers  established  this  scholarship  to honor  a much  appreciated  and  beloved  cafeteria worker.   Maxine worked at the High School for 23 years and was also an instructor in the Adult Education Program for 12 years.  The scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating senior who will attend a vocational or technical school.  

  

2009   The Michael M. Kennedy Memorial Scholarship 

(First Established: March 2009)  This  scholarship  shall  be  awarded  to  a  graduating member of  the senior class who plans to attend a trade school or pursue technical training and has persevered despite challenges in his/her life.  The funds from this donation shall be awarded to support BHS senior in need  of  financial  assistance  in  order  to  pursue  post  secondary training.  

  

2008   

The Michael P.  Troderman Scholarship (First awarded in 2008) 

 

This  scholarship  is  being  established  by  the  family  of  Michael  P. Troderman to  honor the memory of their father.  Mr. Troderman lived in Brookline  from  19399‐1972,  attended  Brookline  Public  Schools  and graduated from Brookline High School in 1957.  This scholarship is to be awarded to a member of the senior class who demonstrates outstanding music  ability  (preference  to  a  student  who  plays  piano  as  well  as  a member of the tennis team).  

  

1977   

The Michael S.  Dukakis Scholarship (First awarded in 1977) 

 

A  scholarship  made  possible  through  the  generosity  of  the  Brookline Chamber  of  Commerce  to  honor  the  former Governor  of Massachusetts, Michael  S.  Dukakis,  a  graduate  of  Brookline Hi9Jt  School,  Class  of  1951. This  Scholarship  is  to be  awarded  to  a member of  the  graduate  class  of Brookline High School who has demonstrated unusual musical  talent  or who excels in government studies.   

  

2007   

The Mint Julep Scholarship (First awarded in 2007)  

 

In their desire to return something to the Brookline community, the owners  of  the  Mint  Julep  boutique  in  College  Corner  have established this scholarship.  The scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating senior of Brookline High School who intends to pursue a career in the retail industry, in any of its many facets.  

  

1968   

The Morris Rand Scholarships (First awarded in 1968) 

 

Three scholarships made possible through a grant from the trustees of the Morris Rand Charitable Foundation. These are to be awarded to members of  the graduating  class of Brookline High School who have  been  outstanding  in  scholarship  and  citizenship  on  the following  basis:  a  graduate who  intends  to major  in  structural  or civil engineering; a graduate who proposes  to major  in education; and a graduate who proposes to major in one of the Social Sciences. Social Studies; Engineering; Teachering.  

  

1962   

The Moustapha Avigdor‐Kiwanis Club of Brookline Scholarship 

(First awarded in 1962)  

This perpetual scholarship is made possible through the generosity and  interest  in youth of  the  late Mr. Moustapha Avigdor who as a prominent  Brookline  Merchant  and  member  of  the  Brookline Kiwanis Club in gratitude for the opportunities afforded him in the country  of  his  choice  and  in  appreciation  of  the  character  and industry of Brookline. High School  students who were  in his part‐time employ.   

  

1993   

The Nathan Purpel Scholarship (First awarded in 1993) 

 

This  scholarship  is  awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  at  Brookline High  School  who  was  also  graduated  from  Lawrence  School;  a student who has demonstrated generosity of spirit and an abiding for  the  value  of  human  differences  and  the  many  ways  in  which they  enrich  individual  and  community  lives.  This  scholarship was established to recognize Nathan Purpel’s long tenure and successful Principalship  at  Lawrence  School  arid  to  honor  him  upon  his retirement and thank him for the  immeasurable gifts he has given to all.   

  

1995   

The Newbury College Scholarship (First awarded in 1995) 

 

A one year full tuition scholarship provided through the generosity of Newbury College located in Brookline. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who qualifies for admission to Newbury College and who displays strong academic credentials, who will major in Culinary Arts or a related field.   

  

1984   

The Nicholas E.  Robson Scholarship (First awarded in 1984) 

 

The Nicholas E. Robson Scholarship is awarded to a graduating student at Brookline High School who is continuing his/her education and who was an active participant in Brookline Recreational Youth Soccer and Brookline High School Soccer. Nicholas Robson would have graduated with the Class of 1987.   

  

1975   

The Northeastern University Scholarships (First awarded 1975) 

 

Annual  scholarships  to  be  awarded by Northeastern University  in memory of Dean Sidney Herman, who served as an administrator at Northeastern  from  1952  to  1979.  Dean  Herman,  a  long‐time resident  of  the  Town  of  Brookline,  served  as  President  of  the Parent‐Teacher  Organization  at  Brookline  High  School.  These scholarships  are  awarded  to  graduates  of  Brookline  high  School who have applied to and who have been accepted by the University. In order to qualify for consideration, the student must demonstrate a  high  level  of  academic  ability  as  well  as  involvement  in  extra‐curricular activities in the High School and within the community.   

  

1974   

The Olga E.  E.  Blasser Scholarships (First awarded in 1974) 

 

Scholarships provided  from  the  income of  a  fund provided by  the will  of  the  late  Olga  E.  E.  Blasser,  teacher  at  the  John  D.  Runkle School  from  1920  to  1955.  These  funds  are  to  be  used  for  the benefit of students of the graduating class of Brookline High School who best exemplifies excellence of character and initiative, and who intends to pursue their education in the fields of economics and/or political science.   

  

2001   

The OuYang Yu Scholarship (First awarded in 2001) 

 

An  annual  scholarship  given  by  long‐time  Brookline  High  School guidance  counselor  Assunta  H.  Cha  in  memory  of  her  mother OuYang  Yu, who  valued  education  very  highly.  The  scholarship  is for a Chinese‐American or Asian‐American woman who intends to pursue the study of literature or the fine arts.   

  

2008   The Page Scholarship for Unique Passions and 

Careers (First awarded in 2008) (One‐time lump sum) 

 This  one‐time  scholarship  is  established  by  Alexandra  Page  as  a part  of  her  work    for  the  Good  Citizen  in  the  Good  Society  class.  This  scholarship  is  to be  awarded  to  a  graduating  senior, male or female,  who  has  shown  interest  in  a  unique  or  unconventional passion or career.   Such a career may not have a clear‐cut path to fruition,  but  does  manifest  the  love  of  the  student  for  his  or  her passion.  

  

2003   The Patricia E.  Jacobson Memorial Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2003) (one‐time lump sum)  

 

A  one‐time  scholarship  established  by  Patricia’s  mother  and brother in loving memory of the twentieth anniversary of Patricia’s death.   Ms  Jacobs  passed  away  the  summer  following  completing the fourth grade at Driscoll School.  The recipient of this scholarship shall be a graduate of Brookline High School who attended Driscoll School and plans to continue studies at a post‐secondary school.  

  

1975   

The Paul L.  Pastan Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1975) 

 

A  scholarship  created  by  the  family  classmates  and  friends  of  the late  Paul  L.  Pastan,  a  student  at  Brookline  High  School  from September, 1972, until  the  time of his death on  January 29, 1975. This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a member  of  the  graduating class  of  Brookline  High  School  who  has  shown  both  interest  and proficiency  in  chemistry  in  the  High  School,  and  who  plans  to continue studies in that field at a post‐secondary school.   

  

1941   

The Payson Dana Scholarship (First awarded in 1941) 

 A Scholarship provided by the will of the late Payson Dana, member of  the  Board  of  Selectmen  from  1912  to  1920,  and  the Massachusetts  Commissioner  of  Civil  Service  from  December  1, 1919  to  the  time  of  his  death  on  November  8,  1927.  This scholarship  is  awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  at  Brookline  High School.   

  

1998   

The Peter R.  Polishuk Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1998) 

 

This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Peter Polishuk.  Peter died in 1998 after a four‐year battle with cancer.  The recipient of the scholarship shall be a graduating senior who plans to attend college and who was a member of the BHS Rugby team.  The recipient shall exhibit the traits of Pete:  enthusiasm, hard work, camaraderie, leadership and willingness to help others.  

  

1989   

The Piltch Family Scholarship (First awarded in 1989) 

 

This  scholarship  is  to be awarded  to a graduating  senior who has been  involved  in  community  service  and  who  has  exhibited sensitivity to the physical and emotional differences among people. This recipient shall have demonstrated leadership qualities.  

  

2006   

The Rae and Louis Kozloff  Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

This scholarship is being established by Anthony Kozloff in memory of his grandparents Rae and Louis Kozloff.  This scholarship is to be awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  who  is  enrolled  in    an undergraduate  program  in  mathematics,  science  or  engineering studies at an accredited degree‐granting institution.  

  

2005   

The Recycling Champion Award Scholarship (First awarded in 2005) 

 

This  award  is  established  by  the  Brookline  Solid Waste  Advisory Committee.  The award is to be given to a graduating senior, who is a  member  of  the  Go  Green  Program,  for  his/her  outstanding recycling  practices  and  innovative  approaches  to  waste management.  

  

1997   

The Richard Canney Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1997) 

 

This  scholarship  has  been  established  by  the  Social  Studies Department of BHS to remember Richard "Monty" Canney. Richard was a much appreciated and beloved custodian for many years. The scholarship will be awarded to a graduating senior who is  the son or daughter of a custodian or cafeteria staff person, and who during his/her attendance at BHS has exemplified good citizenship among fellow students and won the respect and admiration of the faculty.   

  

2004   

The Richard P.  Gordon Twin Scholarship (First awarded in 2004) 

 

This scholarship is established by Dr.  Susan Gordon Weinberger, twin sister of Richard Gordon, to honor his memory and celebrate the unique experience of being a twin.   Mr. Gordon and his twin sister were the only twins in the 1958 graduating class.  The recipient must be a twin in the graduating class who is pursuing post‐secondary education and demonstrates financial need.  

  

1995   

The Richard T.  Leary Scholarship (First awarded in 1995) 

 

A  scholarship  established  to  honor  Mr.  Richard  T.  Leary’s dedication  and  perseverance  in  sustaining  the  high  quality  of  life that  Brookline  is  so  noted  for  in  the  Commonwealth  of Massachusetts. Mr.  Leary was  former Deputy  executive  Secretary, Executive  Secretary  and  Town  Administrator  for  the  Town  of Brookline since 1960 until his retirement in 1994. This scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior who has demonstrated scholastic achievement  by maintaining  a  "B"  grade  point  average,  and  is  an accomplished  athlete,  and  has  demonstrated  the  qualities  of leadership and community service.   

  

2000   

The Robert Bookston ‐  Brookline Track Teams Scholarship     

(First awarded in 2000)  

This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  someone  considered  an outstanding  team  player  by  the  Brookline  Track  Coaches.  It  is funded  from  proceeds  from  "Robert's  Run",  a  sanctioned  cross‐country  competition. Robert Bookston was a member and captain of  the  Brookline  High  School  Cross  Country  Team.  Robert  found solace  in  community  service  and  his  commitment  to  running  and his  teammates. Robert was an  incredible  role model  to  those who knew  him.  He  has  touched  many  people  in  the  Brookline community  and  his  life  has  made  an  impact  on  many  young students  and  athletes.  Robert's  teammates  and  friends  have decided  to  commemorate  his  life  with  something  that  he  would have loved to participate in himself, an annual race in his name.

The Robert Bookston Community Service Club Scholarship     

(First awarded in 1971)  

A scholarship made possible by the members of the Brookline Community Service Club to graduating members who have been admitted to post‐secondary schools. The recipients shall have distinguished themselves as members of the Community Service Club for a minimum of two years through service to the school and community and by their outstanding citizenship. The selection will be made the Brookline High School Scholarship Committee with the recommendation of the advisor of the Brookline Community Service Club.   

  

1994   

The Robert F.  Trohon Scholarship (First awarded in 1994) 

 

This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  annually  to  a  member  of  the graduating  class  of  Brookline  High  School  who  plans  to  continue his/her  education  at  Wentworth  Institute  of  Technology  or  to  a student enrolled in a post‐secondary school who plans to major in the field of building, architecture, engineering or related fields.   

  

1983   

The Robert I .  Sperber Scholarship Fund (First awarded in 1983) 

 

Characteristic  of  his  eighteen  year  tenure  as  Superintendent  of Schools,  Dr.  Robert  I.  Sperber  has  chosen,  on  the  occasion  of  his departure,  to  establish  a  scholarship  fund  that  would  benefit Brookline students. This is to be a perpetua1 scholarship provided by the colleagues and friends of Dr. Sperber to honor him, and will be  presented  to  a worthy  graduate  of  Brookline High  School who intends to further his/her education at an institution of higher.  

  

1961   

The Robert J .  Newbury Scholarship (First awarded in 1961) 

 

A  perpetual  scholarship,  provided  by  the  Parent‐Teacher Organization  of  the  Edith  C.  Baker  School  to  honor  Dr.  Robert  J. Newbury, Principal of the Edith C. Baker School from 1940 until his retirement in 1977, for a graduate of the Edith C. Baker School and Brookline  High  School  who  has  been  outstanding  in  both citizenship and scholarship.   

  

2006   

The Robert M. Monahan Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

The  scholarship  is  established  by  Mrs.  Beth  Denman  and  the children of Mr.  Monahan to honor the memory of her late husband and  their  father  Robert  M.  Monahan.      Mr.  Monahan  coached Brookline Youth Hockey for 20+ years and was also the Treasurer.    He  was  a  person  of  the  highest  moral  character,  a  citizen  and mentor to many boys and girls. This scholarship is to be awarded to a  graduating  senior  who will  be  attending  post  secondary  school majoring in accounting or business who exhibits outstanding school citizenship and moral character as Mr. Monahan.  

  

2005   

The Robert Pugatch Family Memorial Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2005)  

This scholarship is established by Mrs. Monica Pugatch and her children to honor the memory of her husband and father Robert Pugatch.  The recipient is to be a graduating senior who played on the BHS Varsity Hockey team, who lives life to its fullest, shows concern and respect towards others, a friend to all.  

  

2003   

The Robert Pugatch Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2003) 

 

This  scholarship  is  established  by  the  friends  of  Brookline  High School Boys’ Hockey in memory of Robert Pugatch, a ‘73 Brookline High School graduate, who died suddenly in 2001.  During his four years at Brookline High School, Mr. Pugatch served as the Brookline High  School  Varsity  Hockey  Team  Manager.    This  scholarship  is awarded to a hockey player who came up through the ranks playing for both the Brookline Youth Hockey program and Brookline High School Varsity Hockey  team.    The  recipient  shall  be  an  all‐around team player who shows the enthusiasm, good moral character, and a strong work ethic as in the tradition of Mr. Pugatch.  

  

1978   

The Rotary Club of Brookline/Dr. William Perry Murphy Scholarship (First awarded in 1978) 

 

These scholarships are provided by the Rotary Club of Brookline in memory of Dr. William Perry Murphy,  a  long‐time member of  the Rotary Club and the recipient of the 1934 Nobel Prize in medicine and  one  in  memory  of  Merle    Scheriber  who  was  an  excellent Rotarian  whose  activities  embodied  the  rotary  ideals.  The scholarships  are  awarded  annually  to  deserving  members  of  the graduating  class  of  Brookline  High  School  who  have  excelled  in social  studies  and  who  have  been  accepted  to  an  institution  of higher learning.  

  

2003   

The Rozanna Alexis Tendler Memorial Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2003)  

An  annual  scholarship  established  by  the  family  of  Rozanna Tendler, a member of the Class of 1992 who lost her life in a tragic motorcycle  accident.    It  is  the  wish  of  Rozanna’s  family  that  her memory  lives  through  this  scholarship.    Rozanna  gained  wide recognition  for  her  outstanding  professional  abilities  in  the international  software  industry.    To  honor  Rozanna’s  Eastern European  heritage,  this  scholarship  will  be  awarded  to  an outstanding graduate of former Soviet Union descent.  

  

2003   

The Ruth Jacobson, EdD. Educational Scholarship 

(First awarded in 2003)  

This  scholarship was  established  by  the  family  and  friends  of  Dr. Ruth  Jacobson on  the occasion of her  retirement  in  recognition of her  education  at  Brookline  High  School,  Class  of  1951  and  her thirty‐four  years  on  the  faculty  of  the  Brookline  Public  Schools.  This scholarship  is  to be awarded to a graduate of Brookline High School  who  demonstrates  ethical,  considerate  behavior  to  others and shows interest and/or aptitude in math or film.  

  

2005   

The Sarah Mayper Scholarship (First awarded in 2005) 

 

This  scholarship  is  established by numerous Brookline  families  to honor  Sarah  Mayper,  a  truly  inspiring  teacher  who  profoundly changed the lives of many BHS students.   This scholarship is to be awarded to a graduating senior who has both a strong artistic and philosophical  vision,  who  thinks  about  art  both  in  terms  of aesthetics,  social  impact  and making  change.    A  student  who  has faced insurmountable obstacles and has persevered.    

  

1992   

The Sean W. Hutchings Memorial Award (First awarded in 1992) 

 

A scholarship established by the parents, family and friends of Sean Hutchings, a 1991 graduate of Brookline High School. This award is will  be  for  a  member  of  the  graduating  class  who  showed tremendous  effort  and  achieved  good  grades  with  special consideration for that member of the class who is accomplished in creative writing.   

  

1973   

The Southern Brookline Garden Club Scholarship (First awarded in 1973) 

 

A scholarship provided by  the Southern Brookline Garden Club  to be awarded annually to a deserving member of the graduating class of  Brookline  High  School  who  intends  to  pursue  a  career  in horticulture, agriculture, ecology conservation,  forestry, or  related vocational  or  educational  pursuits.  The  recipient  shall  have  had  a record of good performance in school, and shall have demonstrated interest and enthusiasm in the above fields.   

  

1989   The Stephen N. Fenn Gordenstein Memorial 

Scholarship (First awarded in 1989) 

 The Stephen N. Fenn and Lisa Fenn Gordenstein 

Memorial Scholarship  

(renamed in 2001 and awarded in both names in 2002)  Originally established to honor the memory of Stephen Penn, Class of 1947, Class President, Captain of the baseball team and starting guard on a championship  football  team, who was held  in  real and sincere  affection  by  all  those whose  lives  he  touched.  It  now  also bears the name of Lisa Penn Gordenstein, Stephen's daughter, Class of  1977,  a  passenger  on  American  Airlines  F1ight  #11  on September 11th. In her abbreviated career, Lisa had achieved wide recognition  for  her  outstanding  abilities  in  fashion marketing  and merchandising,  claiming  the  admiration  and  devotion  of  family, friends and colleagues. This scholarship is to be awarded to one or more  members  of  the  graduating  class  of  Brookline  High  School planning to go to college and who, through his/her behavior during high  school  has  best  exemplified  the  qualities  of  leadership,  good sportsmanship and humanity.  This scholarship  is awarded to a  member  of  the  graduating  class  at  Brookline  High School who is planning to go to college and who, through his/her  behavior  during  high  school  has  best exemplified  the  qualities  of  leadership,   good sportsmanship,  and  humanity  displayed  by  Stephen Fenn,  Class  of  1947.  Stephen  Penn  served  as  Class President  and  captain  of  the Baseball   Team,  and was  the starting  guard  on  a  championship  Football   Team. Stephen  Fenn  was  held  in  real  and  sincere  affection  by all  those whose lives he touched during his adult l ife.

The Sterling College Memorial Award (First awarded in 1988) 

 

The  Sterling  College Memorial  Award  is  given  in memory  of  Greg Risse,  Brookline  High  School  class  of  1979,  and  Sterling  College, class of 1987. This award is to be given annually to a student who is a member of the graduating class at Brookline High School and who has a curiosity and love for the natural world and who, in the eyes of the faculty, is right now In the process of realizing there are joys and  friendships  and  accomplishments  to  strive  for  in  the  years ahead.   

  

2007   

The Student‐Based Enterprise Scholarship (First awarded in 2007) 

 

This  scholarship  is  being  given  by  the  BHS  Career  and  Technology department.    The  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a  student  who  has participated in the School Store and/or Copy Center,  two of the student‐based enterprises at Brookline High School, and who has been active and shown great entrepreneurial spirit.   

  

1999   

The Studio of Brookline Scholarship (First awarded in 1999) 

 

This scholarship was created by the owners of the Studio Clothing Store  in Brookline as a way  to give back  to  the community where they  have  had  a  successful  business.  The  Studio  celebrated  its twentieth anniversary last year. The scholarship will be awarded to a female graduating senior.  

  

1996   

The Tech Prep Scholarship‐ in Honor of John T.  Ryan      (First awarded in 1996) 

  This annual scholarship is made possible through the generosity of the  friends  and  colleagues  of  John  T.  Ryan,  Chairman  of  the Occupational  Education  Program  at  Brookline  High  School  from 1968 until his retirement, and through the generosity of the Rotary Club  of  Brookline.  The  recipient  of  this  scholarship  shall  be  a member  of  the  graduating  class  who  will  continue  his  or  her education  in one of  the Tech Prep programs. This scholarship will reflect  the  cooperative  working  relationship  established  between the  High  School  and  the  various  receiving  institutions  that  was established  through  the  hard  work  and  perseverance  of  John  T. Ryan.  

  

2001   

The Ted Waldron Scholarship (First awarded in 2001) 

 

A onetime  scholarship  to honor Ted Waldron,  guidance  counselor at BHS for over 30 years. It will be awarded to a graduating senior, a  former  counselee  of  Mr.  Waldron,  who  attained  high  academic achievement and is of strong moral character.    

  

1979   The Thomas J .  and Helen Noonan Scholarship 

(First awarded in 1979)   An annual scholarship made possible through the generosity of the family and friends of the late Thomas J. Noonan and the late Helen Noonan, life‐long residents of  the Town of Brookline and educated in the Brookline Public Schools. Thomas was a staff member in the Recreation department and served on the School Committee and on the Board of Selectmen. Helen was a staff member of the Brookline Public Schools and served as the Physical Education Teacher at the Baker  and  Runkle  Schools.  This  scholarship  is  awarded  to  a member of the graduating class who has excelled academically and athletically at Brookline High School and who has been accepted at an institution of higher learning.   

  

1993   

The Todd Andrew Saker Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 1993) 

 

This  scholarship  is given  to a graduating senior at Brookline High School who is active in theater arts to honor Todd Saker. Todd was an honor roll student at Baker School who loved acting and was a member of the Newton Children's Theater. Todd Saker was a very caring  young  man;  he  raised  monies  for  the  M.S.  Readathon  and took on many other causes. The recipient of this scholarship should be  hard‐working  and  well‐rounded.  Todd  Saker  died  in  a  skiing accident in March, 1992.   

  

2006   

The Toni J .  Cradle Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

This scholarship is being established by the senior class of 2005 to honor Mrs. Toni  J Cradle on the occasion of her retirement after many years of valued  service.     Mrs.  Cradle  served  as  guidance  counselor  at  Brookline High  School  for  36  years  until  her  retirement  in  2005.      She  was  the recipient of the Caverly Award in  2002.   She exemplified the very best of Brookline  High  School.      Mrs.  Cradle  treated  each  of  her  students  as “precious angels” and had incredible expertise in working with people.  It is  estimated  that  she  touched  the  lives  of  up  to  7,000  students.    This scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a  graduating  senior  who  demonstrates need and motivation to be successful and who exhibits outstanding school citizenship and moral character as did Mrs. Cradle.  

  

1996   

The Victoria Hicks Scholarship (First awarded in 1996) 

 

This is a scholarship established by Mr. Zack Rosenburg in honor of his cousin, Victoria Hicks, a 1989 graduate of the High School, who is  August  of  1993,  only  three  months  after  her  graduation  from Syracuse University, was involved in a serious car accident. Victoria was left with severe brain damage and now resides at the Greanery in Brighton. This scholarship is offered with Mr. Rosenburg's deep commitment  to  his  cousin,  the  lesson  that  life  can  change  at  a moment's  notice,  and  his  belief  that  a  student's  life  may  be positively affected by receiving this scholarship.  It  is awarded to a student with  a  good,  caring  attitude,  who  has  the  ability  to  excel academically,  but  has  yet  to  reach  his  or  her  true  academic potential.   

  

1995   

The Viola R.  Pinanski Award (First awarded in 1995) 

 

This award is provided from the income of a fund in accordance of the will of the late Viola Pinanski. Mrs. Pinanski was a member of and then chairman of the Brookline School Committee from 1936 to 1976. This award is for a member of the graduating class who is most outstanding in citizenship and scholarship.   

  

1977   

The Viola R.  Pinanski Scholarship (First awarded in 1977) 

 

A perpetual scholarship provided by a grateful community in honor of the late Viola R. Pinanski in recognition of distinguished service to  the  youth  of  Brookline  as  a  member  of  the  Brookline  School Committee  from 1930  to 1976,  and  chairman  from 1961  to 1967. This  scholarship  is  to  be  awarded  to  a  deserving  member  of  the graduating class of Brookline High School who best exemplifies the attributes of Viola Pinanski.   

  

1974   

The Virginia E.  Thompson Scholarship (First awarded in 1974) 

 

A  perpetua1  scholarship  provided  by  the  Michael  Driscoll  School Staff,  both  past  and  present,  and  former  students  and  mends  in honor  of Mrs.  Virginia  E.  Thompson,  principal  of  the  school  from 1966 to 1974. This scholarship is to be awarded to a graduate of the Michael  Driscoll  School  and  Brookline  High  School  who  has demonstrated good citizenship,  exhibited  sincere effort,  and plans further education.  

  

1990   

The Warren L.  Bartlett/Class of 1949 Scholarship 

(First awarded in 1990)  

This  award  is  given by  the Class  of  1949  in memory of Warren L Bartlett,  former  Housemaster  of  Akers  House,  for  his  tireless devotion  to  education  and  to  youth.  This  award  is  presented  to  a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in Biology and who  will  pursue  a  career  in  biological  sciences  or  a  career  that emphasizes biological sciences.   

  

2005   

The Wendell  Weeks Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2005) 

 

This scholarship is established by the 21st Century Fund in memory of  Wendell Weeks with a gift received from George Weiss, Class of ’61.   Mr. Weeks was  an  English  teacher  at  Brookline  High  School from 1942 until his retirement  in 1970.     He also was a teacher of English, a coordinator and then became Director of Brookline Adult Education. This  scholarship  is  to be awarded  to a  junior or  senior member  of  Brookline  High  School’s  Debate  Team  who  displays leadership as well as personal commitment to the team. 

  

2004   

The William Costin Memorial Scholarship (First awarded in 2004) 

 

This  scholarship  is  established  by  friends  of William  Costin.    Mr. Costin was a longtime activist in Brookline and founding President of the Association of One’s, Two’s and Three’s.  He was dedicated to public  service  and  education.      He  along  with  his  wife  Charlyne served as BHS PTO Presidents.  This scholarship is to be awarded to a student who intends to major in education, public administration, political science or government.  

  

1987   

The William F.  Sullivan Scholarship (First awarded in 1987) 

 

This  scholarship  is  presented  to  a  graduate  of  Brookline  High School who is a member of the Brookline High Golf Team and who has  been  accepted  at  and  will  attend  an  institution  of  higher learning.  This  person must  be  in  need  of  financial  assistance,  and who,  while  a  student  at  Brookline  High  School  exemplifies  good conduct, high moral character and scholastic achievement.  

  

2006   

The William P. Grady‐OFC Scholarship (First awarded in 2006) 

 

This  scholarship  is  made  possible  through  the  generosity  of Navigant  Counseling,  Inc.  to  honor William  Grady,  Coordinator  of the Opportunity for Change Program at Brookline High School.  Mr. Grady  began  his  career  at  Brookline  High  School  as  a  teacher  in 1977  and  has  served  an  Assistant  Housemaster,  as  well  as  the Coordinator  of  the  Opportunity  for  Change  Program  until  his retirement in June, 2006. The recipient of this scholarship shall be a member  of  the  graduating  class  who  will  continue  his  or  her education,  who  demonstrates  scholastic  achievement,  who exemplifies good citizenship.   The recipient must be a graduate of the Opportunity for Change Program.  

  

1986   

The Zuckerman Scholarship (First awarded in 1986) 

  This  fund,  established  by  Walter  and  Natalie  Zuckerman  and family,  is  to  provide  needed  financial  assistance  for  post‐  high school  academic,  vocational,  or  professional  studies  to  a  student who is a member of  the graduating class at Brookline High School and  who,  in  the  opinion  of  the  Brookline  High  School  staff,  has demonstrated the qualities of perseverance and integrity.
