Here wefind some of thebest examples ofCape Dutcharchitecture, andthe best known ofthem is GrootConstantia. On31 July 1685, theHighCommissioner,Hendrik Adriaanvan Reede,granted a farm of762 hectares,which was to

become known asConstantia, toSimon van derStel. The originof the name is notknown. Variousadditions weremade to theoriginal grant frType of site:Farmstead. TheGroot ConstantiaState Estatepreviouslyformed part of

the farmConstantia, whichwas granted toSimon van derStel in 1685 andwas subdivided

after his death in1712. The farmConstantia withthe Cape Dutchmanor housethereon wasacquired in 1885.
