    This is an alphabetized list ofmusicians who havemadenotable use of Gibson Guitar models in live perfor-mances or studio recordings. Because of the great pop-ularity of these models, musicians are listed here only iftheir use of these instruments was especially signicant that is, if:

    they are musicians with long careers who have a his-tory of faithful Gibson use.

    the particular instrument they used was unique or ofhistorical importance.

    their use of the Gibson model contributed signi-cantly to the popularization of that particular instru-ment.

    1 A Johnny A uses a Johnny A Signature model de-signed specically for him by Gibson to the gui-tarists personal specications.[1]

    Jan Akkerman has used a Gibson L5, Les PaulCustom and a modied Les Paul Personal. The Cus-tom is the guitar he is generally associated with.[2]

    Duane Allman (The Allman Brothers Band) useda 1957 Les Paul Goldtop with PAF pickups, a 1959cherry sunburst Les Paul, a 1958 tobacco sunburstLes Paul and a 1968 cherry SG which he used forslide guitar.[3]

    Billie JoeArmstrong (GreenDay) uses several vin-tage 1950s single and double cutaway Les Paul Ju-nior models. Gibson has also produced two BillieJoe Armstrong Signature Les Paul Junior models(one double cutaway, and one single cutaway) as wellas a very limited run of signature acoustic guitars.[4]

    Chet Atkins switched from Gretsch to Gibson inthe mid-1980s and brought with him the popu-lar Country Gentleman and Tennessean model de-signs. Atkins also helped to design several innova-tive acoustic/electric models including the SST, theCE, and the C.E.C. Since his death, Gibson has dis-continued all Chet Atkins models and Gretsch hasresumed the manufacturing and distribution of theChet Atkins line.

    2 B Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) has used numerousGib-son models over the course of his career including:a sunburst ES-330, a 1958 Les Paul Special and a1959 Les Paul Standard.[5]

    Je Beck (The Yardbirds/solo) purchased his rstLes Paul, a 1959 model, for 150 while still a mem-ber of The Yardbirds. Becks fascination with theguitar sprang as much from his interest in Les Paul,the man, as from his love of the guitar itself. Becktold an interviewer: It had a deep powerful soundand you could use it to imitate just about anything -violin, sax, cello, even a sitar.[6] Beck also used anoxblood coloured 1954 Les Paul Standard, withPAF pickups, from 1972 to 1976 and is picturedwith the guitar on the cover artwork of his Blow byBlow album.

    Franny Beecher played a black 1956 Les Paul Cus-tom throughout his career with Bill Haley and theComets in the 1950s and early 1960s.

    Anthony Duster Bennett (British blues singer, har-monica player and musician) played a 1952 Les PaulGoldtop throughout his career that had been givento him in 1968 by Peter Green. After Bennettsdeath the guitar was given to musician Anthony TopTopham.[7]

    Chuck Berry used an ES-350T early in his career,later switching to ES-345s and ES-355s.[9]

    Dickey Betts (The Allman Brothers Band) uses avariety of Gibson models including a 1961 SG anda 1957 Les Paul.

    Mike Bloomeld (The Paul Buttereld Blues Band,The Electric Flag) During his tenure with the But-tereld Blues Band he used a 1954 Gibson Les Paul,which he used for some of the East-West sessions.In due course, according to biographers Jan MarkWolkin and Bill Keenom, Bloomeld swapped thatguitar for a 1959 Les Paul Standard and $100. Thiswas the guitar Bloomeld used as a member of theElectric Flag, and on the Super Session album andconcerts. He later veered between the Les Paul andthe Fender Telecaster, but Bloomelds use of theLes Paul, as did Keith Richards' with the RollingStones and Eric Clapton's with John Mayall inu-enced many others to use the model.   • 3eventually lost the guitar in Canada; Wolkin andKeenoms biography revealed a club owner kept theguitar as partial compensation after Bloomeld cutshort a round of appearances. Its whereabouts todayare unknown.

    Marc Bolan (T.Rex) used Les Paul Standards, Cus-toms and Flying Vs and a Japanese Hummingbirdcopy. His main Les Paul model was renished inan opaque orange to resemble the Gretsch guitarsplayed by his hero Eddie Cochran.[10]

    Mick Box (Uriah Heep) uses a Les Paul Custom.Also used a 1958 double-cutaway Les Paul Junior, aFlying V and a 1968 SG with a Maestro tailpiece.

    Clarence Gatemouth Brown used various Gib-sons including ES-335s and L5s. His main guitarwas a late-60s non-reverse Firebird.

    Jack Bruce (Cream/solo) used several EB-3 bassesduring the late 1960s and early 1970s; during the2005 Cream reunion concerts he used a 1950s EBbass.

    Buckethead (real name: Brian Carroll) uses sev-eral Les Pauls custom-made by Gibson which fea-ture oversized bodies, 24-fret necks, DiMarzio pick-ups and his trademark kill switch. They are usuallyall white. He is also known to own a modied LesPaul custom in Alpine White with gold hardware.

    Sam Bush, a highly respected mandolin player, hasbeen a mainstay on the Bluegrass circuit for over35 years. Gibson produces a Sam Bush Signaturemodel mandolin.

    3 C Larry Carlton favours a sunburst 1968 ES-335,also occasionally using a 1956 Les Paul Special anda 1963 L5.[11] A Larry Carlton Signature model hasbeen produced by Gibson for the man they call Mr335.[12]

    Maybelle Carter, matriarch of the Carter Fam-ily and one of the earliest country recording stars,played a 1928 L-5 archtop almost exclusively. Iconsider this to be the most important single guitarin the entire history of country music said GeorgeGruhn.[13]

    Charlie Christian used an ES-150. The model wasGibsons rst archtop electric guitar and was, as de-scribed by author Tony Bacon, used with devas-tating eect by Christian throughout his short ca-reer. The blade style pickup installed on earlyES-150 models has since become known as the"Charlie Christian pickup" in honor of the legendaryjazzman.[14]

    Larry Carlton and his Carlton burst 335

    John Cipollina (Quicksilver Messenger Service)used two heavily customized SGs with bat-shapedplastic embellishments cut from pickguard material,extensive bindings, older Les Paul pickups (with theneck pickup mounted in reverse), Grover Imperialtuning machines, and mercury dimes glued to thetops of the volume and tone controls. He also addedBigsby B5 vibrato assemblies to both guitars.[15]

    Eric Clapton has used a variety of Gibsonsthroughout his career. The second electric guitarClapton owned was a red 1964 ES-335 that he usedwith The Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith and as asolo artist.[16] In 2004 Clapton donated the guitar toan auction to benet the Crossroads Centre, where itsold for $750,000 a world-record auction price fora Gibson.[17] In 1965 Clapton bought a 1960 sun-burst Les Paul that he used while a member of JohnMayall & the Bluesbreakers and Cream.[18] This wasthe rst of several 1958-60 Les Pauls that Claptonhas used, contributing signicantly to these mod-els popularity.[19] Clapton also owned a 1957 gold-top Les Paul Custom that was renished in deepcherry. He later gave this guitar to his friend GeorgeHarrison, who dubbed the guitar with the nicknameLucy.[20] In 1967 Clapton acquired a 1964 SGpainted by the Dutch artists collectively known asThe Fool; he used this guitar on the Cream albumsDisraeli Gears and Wheels of Fire.[21] Other mod-els Clapton has used extensively include a Firebird Iand a 1958 Explorer that he used on his 461 Ocean

    Boulevard[22] and EC Was Here albums.

    Steve Clark (Def Leppard) Throughout his career,Clark used various Les Pauls,[23] including a rareLes Paul XR-1 as his main instrument during hisPyromania years,[23][24] as well as various Firebirdsand EDS-1275 double-necks[23]

    Allen Collins (Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Rossington-Collins Band, Allen Collins Band) used a Firebird,and later switched to an Explorer. Starting in late1977, he also occasionally used a double-cutawayLes Paul Junior.

    Stompin' Tom Connors used an SJ-200 (pur-chased from a furniture store for $80) from 1956to 1972; he owned it until his death on March 6,2013.[25]

    Sheryl Crow uses a Country Western model, Hum-mingbird, L-00 Blues King, J-200 Western Classic,96 Advanced Jumbo, 96 Southern Jumbo, J45, ES-120, ES-125, ES-335 and various Les Pauls. Heroriginal Country&Western model from the Sixtieswas exactly measured and reproduced as the Sh-eryl Crow Signature in a limited edition with auto-graphed label on the inside.[26]

    4 D Dave Davies (The Kinks) has used numerous Gib-son models over the years, including a 1958 FlyingV (prototype model), a 1960 Goldtop Les Paul anda 1978 Artisan.[27]

    Reverend Gary Davis used a Gibson SJ-200 and aslope-shouldered Gibson B-45-12 twelve-string gui-tar.

    BuckDharma (Blue yster Cult) played a 1969 SGand used an ES 175 for the guitar ri in Don't FearThe Reaper.[28] He also used a 1974 Les Paul.

    Al Di Meola joined Chick Corea's Return to For-ever in 1974 (at age 19), and became an inuentialjazz-rock fusion guitarist thereafter. He used a LesPaul model almost exclusively for his electric guitarwork, particularly on his early solo albums.[29]

    Bob Dylan uses a variety of Gibson models, includ-ing a J-50, a J-200, a J-180 and a J-45.

    Gone video. Gibson currently produces an El-liot Easton signature model SG as part of their In-spired By series manufactured by the Gibson Cus-tom Shop.

    Duane Eddy - The King of Twang Guitar - hasused many dierent Gibson models throughout hiscareer. Gibson produces a Duane Eddy Signaturemodel.[30]

    The Edge (U2) uses several Gibson models includ-ing a 1976 Gibson Explorer Limited Edition,[31] aLes Paul Custom, a 1983 30th Anniversary Gold-top, an ES-335, an SG and a J-200.

    John Entwistle (The Who) used several Thunder-bird IV basses during the early 1970s and later usedcustom-made "Fenderbird"models with Fender Pre-cision Bass necks. Entwistle also used an EB-2 bassduring the early days of The Who.

    The Everly Brothers favoured J-200s in the 1950s;in the 1960s they used the Everly Brothers model,featuring a J-185-style body and an adjustablebridge, which Gibson produced from 1962 to 1972.

    Tal Farlow usually played an ES-350. Gibsonmadea Tal Farlow model in their Artist Model seriesbeginning in 1962.

    Peter Frampton (Humble Pie and a solo artist) usesa three-pickup Les Paul Custom. Gibson has pro-duced two completely dierent Signature modelsfor him.

    Ace Frehley (Kiss) used a three-pickup Les PaulCustom as well as an Ace Frehley Signaturemodel[32] and an EDS-1275.[33] He also used a LesPaul Standard.

    Jerry Garcia (Grateful Dead) played on GibsonLes Paul and Gibson SG guitars early in his career,but from the early 1970s onward generally preferredcustom built instruments.[34]

    Hank Garland (Nashville guitarist who workedwith Elvis Presley among others) worked with Gib-son and fellow Nashville player Billy Byrd to de-sign the Byrdland guitar, which was named for them(Byrd + Garland). Garland also played an ES-150and an electried L-7.[35]

    Woody Guthrie with his L-0

    Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top) has used several dierentGibson models over the course of his career includ-ing Goldtop Les Pauls, Flying Vs, Explorers, ES-5Switchmasters and Les Paul Juniors. His main gui-tar is a 1959 Les Paul Standard nicknamed PearlyGates. Pearly has such an unmistakable characterthat we felt it was necessary to nd another instru-ment with a similar sound to use as a spare guitar.We accumulated dozens of guitars, but nothing quitematched her. But instead of tossing these other ac-quisitions away, they kept accumulating. Its an on-going saga that never ends.[36][37]

    Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders)played Les Pauls throughout the 1970s and early1980s, and now uses a Les Paul Axcess.[38]

    Grant Green Inuential jazz guitarist who recordedmore dates with the Blue Note record label in theearly to mid-1960s than any other musician, both asa leader and as a sideman. He used a Gibson ES-330during this period.[39]

    Peter Green, formerly with John Mayall & theBluesbreakers and the founder of FleetwoodMac, ismost notable for his 1959 Les Paul that had the pick-ups accidentally wired out of phase. Green boughtand used it in almost every notable recording hemade from 1965 to 1970.[40] The guitar used to beowned by Gary Moore, but it was sold to a privateowner in 2006.

    Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vul-tures, Nirvana) uses many dierent Gibson modelsincluding: Les Pauls, the DG-335 (a Gibson cus-tom made Trini Lopez inspired by him), Explorers,SGs, ES-335s, Firebirds, and a 1970s Trini LopezStandard. He also has his own Gibson model, theDG-335, modeled after the Trini Lopez Standard.

    Arlo Guthrie uses a 3/4 sized LG-2. Gibson cur-rently produces an Arlo Guthrie Signature model.

    WoodyGuthrie used an L-0 and a Southern Jumbo.Gibson has replicated his 1945 model including hisfamous this machine kills fascists sign.

    8 H Steve Hackett (Genesis, GTR) uses numerous LesPaul models. His main guitar for many years wasa 1957 Goldtop. He also owns a black Les Paulcustom tted with a Fernandes Sustainer and FloydRose tremolo system.

    Kirk Hammett (Metallica) has used various FlyingV and Les Paul models throughout his career.[41]

    Emmylou Harris uses a Dove, various J-200s anda J-200 Western Classic.

    George Harrison used a Les Paul, an SG, an ES-345TD, a J-160E and a J-200.[42] One of the mostfamous Gibson guitars is Georges Lucy

    Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman BrothersBand) uses a Les Paul Custom, Les Paul Standard,SG, an ES-335 and a non-reverse Firebird. Gibsonproduces an inspired by version of Haynes mainLes Paul.

    Justin Hayward (The Moody Blues) has used anES-335 for his entire career.

    Jimi Hendrix (The Jimi Hendrix Experience) isgenerally regarded as an iconic Stratocaster player,but Hendrix used several Gibson models includingan SG Custom, Flying V, Les Paul Special and a LesPaul Custom. Gibson also gave him two guitars in1970, a custom Flying V and an ES-345 (both left-handed models). Gibson has released an inspiredby Flying V replicating his 1967 Flying V includingthe psychedelic oral design which Hendrix himselfhad hand painted on the original.[43]

    James Heteld (Metallica) has used various Ex-plorer models and also a Les Paul Custom. He useda Cherry red Gibson SG for the lming of the Turnthe Page Video[41]

    Lightnin' Hopkins played a J-160e. It is now ondisplay at the Rock Hall of Fame in Cleveland OH.

    Lightnins last guitar was a 1980 Les Paul Silverburstgiven to him on his 68th birthday by his wife andhis bass player, Congressman RonWilson. Both arepart of the Joe Kessler Collection.

    Steve Howe (Yes, Asia, GTR) favours an ES-175,and has also used an ES-345, an EDS-1275 and anornate Les Paul model named The Les Paul.[44] In2002, Gibson introduced the Steve Howe SignatureES-175.[45]

    9 I Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath) has used an SGthroughout most of his career, and also owns otherGibson models. Currently his collection includesa rare Barney Kessel left-handed model,[46] a red1965 SG Special nicknamed monkey (used on allof Black Sabbath's early albums and pictured on theinside cover of Black Sabbath Vol. 4),[47] a red Cus-tom Shop SG,[48] a black Custom Shop SG[49] and ablack SG Standard.[50] Gibson has produced a TonyIommi Signature SG.[51]

    Matthias Jabs (Scorpions) uses over 20 dierentExplorers including seven Korina models and sev-

  • 7eral Explorer 90s. A prototype signature model wasproduced for him by Gibson which was 90% the sizeof a regular Explorer. Jabs also owns several LesPauls as well as a Moderne.

    Joan Jett the rst female to receive her own Gibsonsignature electric guitar model, a worn whiteMelodyMaker, after years of faithful use of the model.[52]

    Eric Johnson used an ES-335 for all but the bridgesection of the recorded version of Clis of Dover.Also uses the ES-335 during live performances. Hecan also be seen playing a Gibson SG in the EricJohnson-Art of Guitar DVD.

    Gordie Johnson (Big Sugar) has used many Gibsonmodels in the past, notably a Les Paul Black Beauty,a vintage ES-335, a white double-neck, and severalother models. He also has a Gibson SGJ Signaturemodel, which features P94 pickups in place of thestandard P90s.

    Robert Johnson used an L-1 acoustic.[53] Gibsonmakes a Robert Johnson Signature model.

    Brian Jones (The Rolling Stones) used an acous-tic SJ-200, an ES-330, reverse and non-reverseFirebirds[54] and a Les Paul Goldtop.[55]

    Mick Jones (Foreigner) used a black Les PaulCustom retrotted with DiMarzio Super Distortionhumbuckers and two coil-tap switches. Gibson pro-duces an Inspired by series of Jones Les Paul.

    Mick Jones (The Clash/Big Audio Dynamite/Carbon/Silicon) used a Les Paul Junior, Les PaulStandard, several Les Paul Customs, and a Melodymaker during his tenure with The Clash. He cur-rently uses Les Paul Junior Double Cut.

    Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) uses Les Paul Customs,Firebirds, Flying Vs, and a Gibson Les Paul DoubleCut in his early days. Gibson produces an Inspiredby series of Jones Les Paul model.

    11 K Jorma Kaukonen, a self-described Gibsonnut,[56] played an ES-345 or 355 for most ofhis career with Jeerson Airplane, and a J-45, aJ-190[56] and an Advanced Jumbo[56] as a solo artist.He has also endorsed the Epiphone equivalents.

    Barney Kessel used an ES-350 and ES-350T. Gib-son produced a BarneyKesselmodel in their ArtistModel series in 1960.

    Albert King was a left-handed upside-down/backwards guitarist: he usually playeda Flying V ipped over upside-down so the low Estring was on the bottom.[57]

    B. B. King has used many dierent Gibson models,including an ES-5 and an ES-175 early in his career;later he began using thinline hollow-body (ES-330)and semi-hollow (aka semi-acoustic) models (ES-335 and ES-345.) Kings Signature ES-355, nick-named Lucille, has been his main guitar for manyyears.[58]

    Freddie King used a Goldtop Les Paul with P-90 pickups. Also used an ES-355 in some liveperformances.[59]

    Mark Knoper Played a 1979 Gibson Les PaulStandard Reissue '59 on the Dire Straits song'Money for Nothing'. He also owns a 1985 GibsonLes Paul Standard Reissue '59, Sunburst. This cus-tom shop model has got his birthdate (12849) as theserial number.[60] He also plays other Gibsonmodelslike a 'super 400', an 'es 175' and a 'Chet Atkins.[61]

    Paul Kosso (Free) was a passionate Les Paulplayer able to say in a few notes what many dozenswere attempting.[62] Kosso used several late-50sLes Paul models as well as an ES-335 for occasionalstudio use.

    Lenny Kravitz used a Flying V in his music videoAre You Gonna Go MyWay. He also plays a sun-burst Les Paul.

    RobbyKrieger (The Doors) uses an SG, an ES-335and a Melody Maker. He also used a black GibsonLes Paul for slide guitar in the studio while with TheDoors.

    12 L AndrewLatimer (Camel) uses a variety of Les Paulmodels, for instance Gibson Les Paul.[63]

    Albert Lee owns a black 1958 Les Paul Customgiven to him by Eric Clapton, a black 1958 J-200given to him by Don Everly and an Everly Brothersmodel. Lee played the J-200 during the Concert ForGeorge. The guitars are usually kept under lock andkey.

    Alvin Lee (Ten Years After) used a customized ES-335 nicknamed Big Red. The Gibson Customshop now produces a reissue of Lees guitar.

    John Lennon used a J-160E while with The Bea-tles. Several of the songs on the White Album hecomposed in India on Donovan's J-45.[64] As a soloartist, Lennon used a Les Paul Special and a modi-ed Les Paul Junior.[65][66] Gibson makes a limited-edition replica of his J-160E[67] and an inspiredby John Lennon Les Paul replicating the modiedJunior.[68]

    Alex Lifeson (Rush) has used many dierent Gib-son models over the course of his career including: a'68 sunburst ES-335, a '78 black / '77 sunburst ES-345, a '77 white ES-355, a '78 white / '76 cherryEDS-1275, a cherry SG, a sunburst Howard RobertsFusion, an ES-369, a variety of Les Paul models, aDove, and a J-45 acoustic. Gibson now has issuedan Inspired By series of Lifesons original white355 as well as the Alex Lifeson Axxess Les Paulguitar.[69][70]

    13 M Lonnie Mack has used a 1958 Flying V tted witha Bigsby vibrato tailpiece since the rst year the Fly-ing V was manufactured. He refers to it a No. 7,as he was told that it was the seventh guitar o theproduction line. In the mid-1990s Gibson issued alimited-edition Lonnie Mack model of the guitar.

    Ian MacKaye always played one of two dierentGibson SG with Fugazi.[71][72][73]

    Frank Marino has used 1960s Gibson SG guitarsthroughout his entire career.[74][75]

    Bob Marley (Bob Marley and The Wailers) used aLes Paul Special. The guitar is buried with him inhis mausoleum. Gibson has released a Bob MarleySignature Les Paul Special.

    Pat Martino uses a Pat Martino Signaturemodel.[76] He formerly used an L5S.

    Tak Matsumoto (B'z/solo) uses his own Les Paulsignature model issued in 1999, which made himthe rst Asian artist to be bestowed with the honor.A number of other Gibson models comprise hiscollection,[77] including a number of custom-issuedGibson DCs designed solely for him.

    Paul McCartney owns a rare left-handed 1957 LesPaul Goldtop[78] Like many players, McCartney hasreplaced the fragile original tuning machines with amore modern sturdy set.[79] He uses a left-handed1960 Les Paul Standard (one of three known exam-ples) as his main stage guitar.[80][81] He also uses aC-5 in the studio.

    John McLaughlin has used many dierent Gibsonmodels over the years, including Les Pauls, an EDS-1275, ES-335s, Byrdlands, a sunburst dual-pickupJohnny Smith model, an ES-345 and Hummingbirdacoustics.He also used an SG on Bitches Brew,Miles Davis breakout fusion album from 1969.

    Ralph McTell uses a J-45, and records with a'Robert Johnson Reissue' L-1

    Pat Metheny used a humbucker-equipped 1960ES-175N for much of his career, until switching toa signature model Ibanez hollowbody in the 2000s.Metheny has also used a Les Paul on occasion, no-tably on Zero Tolerance for Silence.

    Bill Monroe, the Father of Bluegrass, used aLloyd Loar-signed Gibson scroll-top F5 mandolin,making it the reference standard for bluegrass man-dolinists. Monroes F5 is now in the Country MusicHall of Fame.[82]

    Wes Montgomery used an ES-175 early in his ca-reer as well as an L5 CES.[83] Gibson currently pro-duces aWes Montgomery Signature model L5 CES.

    Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy/Skid Row/solo) used aLes Paul Standard and had two separate Les Paulsignature models released by Gibson. Moore for-merly owned the famous 1959 Les Paul used byPeter Green during his Fleetwood Mac tenure.[84]and had his own personal Les Paul model recong-ured to match the unusual modication of the Greenoriginal. He was also vocal about his fondness forthe Explorer, which he used in his later solo career.

    Scotty Moore (Elvis Presley's original lead gui-tarist) initially played an ES-295, before switchingto an L5 CES and subsequently a Super 400 CES.[85]In 1999, Gibson reissued the ES-295 as the ScottyMoore Signature model.[86]

    Jimmy Nolen (The J.B.'s) used various Gibsonmodels.[87]

    Ted Nugent is most closely associated with early1960s Byrdland models in black, sunburst and nat-ural, and Gibson has developed a Byrdland modelnamed for him. More recently, he has occasionallyused a '59 sunburst Les Paul and an American-ag-motif Les Paul.

    Mike Oldeld used an L6S around 1978, vari-ous Les Paul models and an SG Junior, which fea-tured on many of his albums in the seventies andeighties.[88]

    Roy Orbison used an ES-335 and a Les Paul witha Bigsby tailpiece.

  • 916 P Jimmy Page (The Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin/solo)uses a 1959 Les Paul (Number 1, acquired fromJoe Walsh), a 1959 Les Paul (Number 2[89]), a1973 Les Paul, an EDS-1275, a 1977 RD Artist,an ES5 Switchmaster, a Goldtop Premium Les Pauland a 1991 Custom Shop Les Paul (built to be an ex-act replica of Number 1 and re-nicknamed Num-ber 3). Page also owned a modied 1960 Les PaulCustom Black Beauty with a Bigsby tailpiece anda 3-pickup conguration.[90] This guitar was stolenin 1970 and never recovered.[91] For acoustics Pageused a Hummingbird, a J-200 and an A-2 man-dolin. Gibson has released a Jimmy Page Signaturemodel Les Paul replicating the features of Number2.[92][93][94] Page used an EDS-1275 double neckguitar during his live performances of Stairway toHeaven, The Rain Song and The Song Remains theSame.

    Joe Pass used a sunburst ES-175;[95] Epiphonecurrently produces a Joe Pass signature Emperormodel.[96]

    Les Paul helped design the guitar named after him,and used a custom model.[97]

    Joe Perry (Aerosmith) has used many Gibsonmodels over the years, including ES-335s, LesPauls, Flying Vs, and Firebirds; has signatureGibson[98] and Epiphone Les Paul models nick-named Boneyard.[99]

    Carl Perkins - the King of Rockabilly" - used, atvarious points in his career, a Les Paul Goldtop, anL5 and an SG.

    Eddie Phillips (The Creation), used a Gibson ES-335, also with a violin bow in the mid-1960s.[100]

    Andy Powell (Wishbone Ash) has used a Flying Vthroughout his entire career.

    Elvis Presley appeared frequently in concert andlms playing a 1956 J-200N, which he had inlaidwith his name in 1960.[101]

    John Prine uses a J-200.

    17 R Mick Ralphs (Bad Company/Mott the Hoople)used a Les Paul Junior, a Firebird and a Les Paulduring his Mott the Hoople tenure; and a Les PaulStandard and a Flying V during his years with BadCompany. Ralphs currently uses Les Paul CustomShop '58 & '59 reissue models.

    Keith Richards (The Rolling Stones) has used a va-riety of Gibsons throughout his career; hes favouredLes Pauls and ES models, but has also occasion-ally been seen with assorted other models, includ-ing Firebirds, a Flying V, an SG, an L6S and aMelody Maker. In 1964 Richards got a 1959 sun-burst Les Paul with a Bigsby tailpiece;[102] the gui-tar was the rst star-owned Les Paul in Britainand served as one of Richards main instrumentsthrough 1966.[18][103] He later sold the guitar to fu-ture Rolling Stones bandmate Mick Taylor.[104] Inthe mid-60s Richards acquired a 1953 Les PaulGoldtop[105] and the rst of a series of 1957 Les PaulCustoms.[106] One of the latter, hand-painted withpsychedelic patterns, would be one of his main stageand studio guitars from 1968 through the end of theRolling Stones 1970 European tour.[107] Through-out the 1970s he continued to use various Gibsonmodels on stage and in music videos. Among thesewere a second 1959 sunburst Les Paul, a 1954 LesPaul Custom Black Beauty[108] and a cherry red1958 Les Paul Junior,[109] which he replaced in 1979with a 1959 TV-yellow Les Paul Junior that he hasused regularly on stage ever since. Since 1997 anebony ES-355 has been among his favourite stageguitars, along with a white ES-345 that he unveiledin 2006.[110][111] In rehearsal and studio photos andfootage hes frequently seen with an ES-350 and ES-175D.[112][113][114] Hummingbirds have been amonghis preferred acoustic models since 1965.

    Lee Ritenour - noted for playing an L-5, a redES-335, and his own signature Lee Ritenour Modelarchtop.

    Howard Roberts - used several Gibson modelsover the course of his career including: an ES-175,an L-10[115] and a heavily modied ES-150 simplyknown as The Black Guitar.[116] Gibson producesa Howard Roberts Fusion III signature model, whichis a variation of an ES-165.

    BrianRobertson (Thin Lizzy/Motrhead) has useda Les Paul throughout his entire career, particularlyduring his time with Thin Lizzy.[117]

    Rich Robinson (The Black Crowes) uses severaldierent Gibson models, including a 1968 Les PaulGoldtop, a 1964 ES-335, a Customshop FlametopLes Paul, vintage SGs and double-cut Les Paul Spe-cials, and a Dove.[118]

    Mick Ronson (David Bowie) used a Les Paul Cus-tom with the nish stripped for his guitar work onZiggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane, among others.

    Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd) uses Les Paulsand SGs. Previously had a signature model Les Pauland SG released by Gibson.

    18 S Carlos Santana used an SG Special onstage atWoodstock and appeared in advertisements for theL-6S in the 1970s.[119] Santana has also used a sun-burst Les Paul Custom.

    Michael Schenker (Scorpions/UFO/MichaelSchenker Group) used four dierent 1970s FlyingV models. Number 1 was a modied 1975 model;Numbers 2 and 3 were 1979 block-inlay FlyingVs; and Number 4 was a mid-70s white Flying V.Numbers 1, 2 and 3 had Schenkers trademark halfblack/half white paint scheme.

    Rudolf Schenker (Scorpions) uses various Flying Vmodels dating from 1958-2001. He uses three 1958original Flying Vs, three 1967-1969 Flying Vs, two1971Medallions (one was repainted black&white),a 1975 natural-nish Flying V, three 1983 replicasof the 1958 originals, four 1980 models and two1984 Rudolf Schenker Signature models. Schenkerhas over 70 vintage and collectible Flying Vs alongwith several Custom Shop limited editions includinga doubleneck Flying V.[120]

    Tom Scholz (Boston) uses a 1968 Les Paul Gold-top with a DiMarzio SuperDistorion pickup in thebridge.

    Neal Schon (Journey) uses a heavily modied LesPaul, including a Floyd Rose locking tremolo, cus-

    tom electronics and sustainer unit. Gibson producesa signature model of Schons guitar.

    Earl Scruggs (one of the original Bill Monroe BlueGrass Boys) is noted for inventing a unique banjostyle (now referred to as Scruggs style) that has be-come one of the dening characteristics of bluegrassmusic. Scruggs use of a athead Gibson Mas-tertone Granada has made that model the standardfor bluegrass players.[121] An inductee into both theCountry Music Hall of Fame and the Bluegrass Hallof Honor, Gibson produces a signature model banjo,simply titled The Earl, to honor Scruggs monu-mental career achievements.[122]

    Nikki Sixx (Mtley Cre/Sixx A.M.) has used anumber of Thunderbird basses throughout his ca-reer. Between 2000 and 2003 Gibson manufactureda Sixx signature bass, the 'Blackbird'.[123]

    Slash (Guns N' Roses/Slashs Snakepit/Velvet Re-volver/Slashs Blues Ball) uses many dierent LesPaul models including his own custom shop Les Paulmodel. He has also used an EDS-1275. In additionto his custom shop Les Paul, Gibson has manufac-tured two other Slash Les Pauls.[124]

    Johnny Smith was a Gibson endorsee from 1961to 1989, during which time Gibson sold the JohnnySmith model.[125] Smith switched to Heritage in1989. Gibson continues to produce the design asthe LeGrande.

    Chris Spedding, a top British session guitarist ofthe 1970s is well known for playing a Flying V.

    Bill Spooner (The Tubes) used a Flying V, an Ex-plorer, a Les Paul, an SG and a 1959MelodyMaker.

    Paul Stanley (Kiss) used a Flying V, an Explorer, aFirebird I, an SG, and an L6S.

    Hubert Sumlin used a 1956 Les Paul Goldtop formany years and has used various Les Pauls and ES-335s.[126]

    19 T Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones/solo) has usedLes Pauls throughout his career, along with SGs, ESmodels and Firebirds. Taylor bought his rst LesPaul from Selmer Musical Instruments in London.It was stolen in September 1967.[127] In 1967 fora replacement, he bought Keith Richards' Bigsby-equipped 1959 sunburst Les Paul, which he usedon stage until 1971, rst with John Mayall & theBluesbreakers and then (from July 1969) with TheRolling Stones.[104] Taylor used other sunburst LesPauls on the Rolling Stones 1972-73 tours, and stillfrequently uses Les Pauls on stage.

    Rosetta Tharpe was an early adopter of the LesPaul Gold-Top in 1956, and used a 1961 double-cutaway Les Paul Custom.

    George Thorogood uses an ES-125.

    Johnny Thunders used Les Paul Juniors.[128]

    Pete Townshend (The Who/solo) used an SG Spe-cial from 19671972 and various customized LesPaul models from 19731979; he has also used anEDS-1275. Gibson produced a Townshend Signa-ture model SG based on the guitar he played on atWoodstock in 1969. It was a limited edition and dis-continued in 2003.[129] In 2006 the Gibson CustomShop started production of three dierent Les Paulsignature models[130] based on the guitars he playedin the late 1970s. For acoustic work Townshend hasconsistently used SJ-200s.

    Derek Trucks of the Allman Brothers Band and theDerek Trucks Band uses amodiedGibsonUSASG'61 reissue with factory Vibrola, which has had thetailpiece modied and a stopbar tailpiece installed.

    T-Bone Walker electric blues guitar pioneer, useda Gibson ES-250,[132] ES-5, and ES-335.[133]

    Joe Walsh (James Gang/Eagles) uses a Les PaulStandard and an EDS-1275. Walsh was known forhot-wiring the pickups on these guitars to createhis trademark attack sound.[134]

    MuddyWaters used a Les Paul Goldtop in his earlycareer.[135]

    LeslieWest (Mountain) favoured a Les Paul Junior;demand for this model greatly increased after gui-tarists saw one in his hands,[136] and Gibson beganto reissue the model in the mid-1970s. West alsoused an SG and a Flying V.

    Snowy White uses a 1957 Les Paul Goldtop ac-quired in a trade for a Fender Stratocaster while inSweden in 1968. White has been nicknamed GoldTop due to his longtime use of the model.[137]

    Carl Wilson (The Beach Boys) used an ES-335.Custom made in 1962, it has blonde nish and goldhardware with a Bigsby B-7 tremolo. In 1983 theoriginal guitar neck was broken and replaced with aneck from an ES-355.

    Johnny Winter - Played a Firebird, Les Pauls, SGsand Flying Vs.

    RonnieWood (Faces/The Rolling Stones) regularlyuses Firebirds, Les Pauls and a J-200 acoustic onstage;[111][138] he also owns a custom-built single-pickup L5S,[139] a Super 400 CES and an L5.[114]In the late 1970s Wood endorsed the S-1 guitar.[139]In 1997 Gibson announced three Ron Wood signa-ture models: a J-200, a Firebird and a Dobro.[140]

    Zakk Wylde (Ozzy Osbourne/Pride andGlory/Black Label Society) uses a signatureLes Paul Bulls Eye model, a signature Les PaulBuzzsaw model and signature Camo modelwith a camouage nish. He is seen using a blackEDS-1275 in the promotional video for In ThisRiver. Lately he has been using a custom SG/FlyingV hybrid Bulls Eye model called the ZV forlive Ozzy Osbourne shows. Wylde also has a newCustom Shop Flying V Bulls Eye that is currentlyin production complete with a Floyd Rose tremolo.His most recent signature, the Zakk Wylde BFGLes Paul is essentially a stripped down version ofhis custom bullseye Les Pauls, available in bullseyeand buzzsaw nishes. He also has a con shapedsignature guitar produced by Epiphone called theGraveyard Disciple it is equipped with a FloydRose tremolo.

    Neil Young uses several Gibson acoustic and elec-tric models. Youngs main guitar, "Old Black", is a1953 Goldtop Les Paul (painted black) with a mini-humbucker from a Firebird in the bridge positionand a Bigsby tailpiece. Young also has two other1953 Goldtops, one which has modications simi-lar to Old Black, the other a stock original. Alsouses a J-200 and a Mastertone GB-3 banjo; on theTime Fades Away tour he used a 1958 Flying V.[143]

    23 Z Frank Zappa used a 1953/54 Les Paul Goldtop, anSG, a late 70s Les Paul Custom and an ES-5 Switch-master. An ES-355 was his main guitar on the 1970tour. Zappa usually heavily modied his guitars toinclude preamps, balanced outputs for studio work,and later, Fernandes sustainers.[144]
