The Mayflower Compact was an agreement signed aboard the ship, Mayflower, in 1620.

The compact called for laws for the good of the colony and set forth the idea of self government.

It also established principles of tolerance and liberty for the government of the new colony in the New World.

There were 102 passengers on the Mayflower but only 41 passengers signed the compact.

It expressed the deep faith and belief in God and His divine guidance, which was held to dear to the Pilgrim Fathers.

It expressed deep loyalty to native England and to the

King regardless of his actions to persecute and exile the Pilgrims.

It expressed mutual regard for one another as equals in

the sight of God.

It expressed intent to establish just and equal laws upon which would be built a truly democratic form of government, the first recorded in history.

Like the Virginia House of Burgesses established the previous year, the Mayflower Compact began to lay the foundation for democracy in the American colonies.

Fun Fact: In 1802, John Quincy Adams described the agreement as the only instance in human history of that positive, original, social compact and it is believed to have influenced the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution.
