A big HELLO to all my Lion friends. … Welcome to another Lions Year and another 70 years of Lions in Australia. Congratulations to those who have taken on extra responsibilities and to all our Lions, Lionesses and Leos for another year of Lions service. Isn’t this Newsletter a wonderful link for all of us? I hope we will make the most of it by putting in our stories, sharing information and celebrating our important events. So that we all have the best opportunity to have a good read I am doing a review of how you would prefer to receive the Newsletter. A form will be going out to your clubs this month so you can have a say. Secretaries can ask all members if they need the newsletter in hard copy (I will mail it to your Club with the Monthly Mail Out) or if they are happy to have it sent by email (I will send it to your Club electronically with the Monthly Mail Out.) If you have been receiving a hard copy and wish to continue doing so, that is fine. It is important we continue to review this as the cost of mailing and using a professional printer continues to increase and the last thing we want is increased dues. Emailing means you get it much sooner but the important thing is everyone reads the Newsletter and keeps up to date with what is happening in the District. Please return the forms to me ASAP so we can get it sorted quickly. If I don’t receive a reply I shall mail one printed copy of the Newsletter with the Mail Out. INFORMATION DAY Congratulations to those who attended our Incoming Club Officer Training Day at Federation Uni. It was very informative and another great opportunity to talk and share with other Lions. If you didn’t get there I hope you have managed to collect the information you need. Meanwhile Secretaries, remember to make sure you know your deadline dates for all Returns & MyLCI. I will be reminding you but it is better to be organised ahead. I want to congratulate Drouin Lions Secretary Murray Gardener for being the first to send me his Return No 1. He will receive a prize, as will all Secretaries through the year who are first to send in their returns. Remember to still send me a Nil Return if there is no change so I know it is completed. One thing I have quickly discovered in my new role as Cabinet Secretary is that I will be totally dependent on my Calendar this year, as will our Club Presidents and Club Secretaries. I hope everyone has all their dates entered. Just in case some are missing I will share the following: Lions Club International Team’s Club Visits & Commitments:

Happy Centennial of Lions Clubs International. Welcome to all the incoming Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries and to all the Lions that have taken on a new and possibly a demanding role within your club. There is nothing more important than a succession plan to ensure that your club has the potential to grow

within your own community. I want to thank you all for taking that extra step in becoming leaders within your own community. The experience you gain here will assist you in all paths of your life and in Lions, it will enable you to take that next step in becoming a leader of tomorrow. At the time of writing this report Kerrie and I are attending the Centennial International Convention in Chicago and celebrating and looking forward to what the next 100 years will bring. Our membership internationally is now at its highest, with in excess of 1,445,591 members globally. Our new International President Dr.Naresh Aggarwal’s theme is We Serve. My own theme is Having fun whilst making a difference. It is important that all members have a choice in how their club is run. Clubs will find it difficult to gain members but more importantly to retain members if a member is not enjoying their experience within his or her own club.

The Lions Clubs International representative visits to clubs shall once again be shared amongst the District governors team. I anticipate that all Members of the District Governors team shall continue to be made welcome by the clubs when they visit, the experience that we gain whilst visiting clubs is invaluable. These participating visits not only give us a better understanding of the needs of our clubs, our district but more importantly our members. It is amazing what we lean as we visit each club, the different and diverse projects that members take on, is truly reflected and based on what is required in each and every different community. I know I have grown and improved myself from my two years of visiting clubs and I am the better for it. As we look towards our next 100 years there will be lots of new things to look out for like - www.mylion.com for the link to this exciting new app. Tune in not out (a web based program from ALDAF) is a great new initiative from ALDAF to help our youth. I will keep you informed as new initiatives are released. It is an exciting time to be a Lion. In addition to the current centennial challenges, sight, environment, youth and hunger, LCI has now included a fifth being diabetes awareness. This addition has been launched during our International convention. I encourage all clubs to include this project during the current Lions centennial year. I look forward to working with you all in this special year.

Andrew McMahon District Governor 2017 / 2018

District Governor’s Report

The past few weeks have been taken up with visits to neighbouring Club Changeover Dinners. Desma and I attended Changeovers at Lindenow, Bairnsdale and lakes Entrance Clubs, all of which were well attended. We will also be attending the Paynesville Club Changeover Dinner on the 15th of July.

District Club visits representing our District Governor Andrew have been scheduled, with the first visit being on the 12th of July to the Yarragon Club, following our

District Changeover on the 9th of July.

I am looking forward to a busy year, visiting Clubs out of my area, and assisting the District Leadership Team. There are many exciting new initiatives to be announced at the Chicago Centenary Convention, as Lions Clubs move into our second century of service. I am sure you will all join with me in wishing Andrew a very successful year as our District Governor for 2017/2018.

1ST Vice District Governor’s Report

Welcome to the new Lions year; I hope you are all in good health and ready to contribute to your Clubs’ success in our Centennial Year.

As 2nd Vice District Governor I will be working closely with the District Global Leadership Team [GLT] Coordinator, which is the role that I recently departed. The GLT Coordinator not only looks at providing Leadership support for Clubs and members, but encourages Clubs to continually maintain and improve their knowledge, not just of Lions, but of Club operations and management too; a well-run Club will always maintain its members and attract others through word of mouth.

This doesn’t mean that Clubs need to be overly “officious”, bureaucratic and rigid, but a well-run Club enjoys themselves through achievement of goals, conducting meetings where members and visitors have

fun and involve themselves in meaningful activities. As DG Andrew’s theme states, “Having fun whilst making a difference”, we’re encouraged to enjoy what we do, while serving the needs of our communities.

During the coming year I’ll be promoting development opportunities for members and I hope you’ll take advantage of them. We can all learn to be better Lions, no matter how long our term of membership, and we also need to encourage each other to take the risk of opening our minds to new ideas, methods and approaches, so that Lions remains relevant for many years to come.

Anyone interested in attending the next Advanced Lions Leadership Institute in Melbourne from 5th – 7th September, please contact me – [email protected] 0438 201 594.
