Magnifica ed elegante villa costruita nel 1893 in stile tardo-rinascimentale toscano che domina, con la sua tenuta, la pianura di Pistoia e gode di una

meravigliosa vista panoramica fino a Firenze.

La villa rappresenta un vero e proprio documento della cultura estetica di fine secolo e del gusto dell’alta società del tempo, con la realizzazione di manufatti

ed ambienti esclusivi per i personaggi più cospicui della nobiltà e della ricca comunità internazionale che all’epoca frequentava Firenze.

I più famosi artisti-decoratori allora attivi in Toscana, da Pietro Baldoncoli a Francesco Morini, da Mariano Coppedè a Giuseppe Michelucci, hanno partecipato

alla realizzazione di questa residenza che, tipica dello stile Cinquecentesco, era celebrata come una dimora degna del Rinascimento.

Gli ambienti interni presentano ricche rifiniture, bellissimi arredi d’antiquariato e splendidi affreschi.

L’accesso alla villa si apre su un ampio ingresso che presenta due scale decorate con una ricca ringhiera in ferro battuto abilmente lavorata e bellissime volte

dipinte nello stile del Poccetti e del Vasari. Da qui si accede al magnifico salone principale con una bellissima volta dipinta e con un maestoso camino, alla sala

da pranzo ed alla sala biliardo con rivestimenti in legno e porte con frontoni scolpiti dagli stessi artisti che hanno eseguito i raffinati mobili.

I pavimenti rappresentano veri e propri modelli d’arte decorativa.

Il multiforme linguaggio eclettico si esprimeva anche nella scuderia a ferro di cavallo, in stile rustico, e nei vari accessori del canile, della voliera e della

ghiacciaia. Anche la sistemazione dei terrazzamenti e del giardino, che presenta a monte un grande prato con una grotta, una scalinata ed una fontana, fu

oggetto di partcolare cura, traendo spunto dalla tradizione storica e dal linguaggio degli stili.

La villa dispone di un ampio terreno in parte destinato a parco (6,5 ha), ad oliveti e vigneti (20 ha) ed a bosco ceduo (23,5 ha). Lungo il viale del parco si trova

una piscina di circa ottanta metri di lunghezza alimentata da acque sorgive. Sottostante al viale di ingresso si trova un terreno pianeggiante che veniva usato

come campo sportivo, che e tutt’ora praticabile come campo da tennis.

La villa è servita da due sorgenti private di acqua che confluiscono in due grandi vasche interrate per soddisfare il fabbisogno idrico del bellissimo giardino

all’italiana di circa 2,5 ettari e per le abitazioni.

Prestigious villa in the Late Renaissance Tuscan style built by Riccardo Mozzanti in 1893. It was commissioned by the engineer Edward Philipson who also

employed Mozzanti to design the palace in Via Strozzi in Florence.

Together with its large land holdings it dominates the plains of Pistoia boasting a magnificent view up to Florence.

The villa represents a real treasure documenting the aesthetic culture of the late XIX century. It reflects the tastes of the high society of the time thanks to its

many particular features which enrich the exclusive environments, conceived to entertain the nobility and wealthy international community which at that time

frequented Tuscany and Florence. In particular the original owner entertained various well known characters including the Rothschilds, Morgans, the Marquess

of Motilla and Lord Drake. The most famous decorative artists active in Tuscany at the time, from Pietro Baldoncoli to Francesco Morini, Mariano Coppedè to

Giuseppe Michelucci, actively contributed by creating many fine works of art for this residence which became celebrated as befitting the Medicea Renaissance

period, encouraged by a kind of professional pride which the local artists are well known for.

The interior environments are richly decorated, with antique furniture and splendid frescoes. Access to the villa is gained through the wide entrance with two

staircases decorated with wrought iron banisters and beautiful vaulted ceilings painted in the Poccetti and Vasari style.

From here we enter the magnificent drawing room with its frescoed ceiling and enormous fireplace, passing the the billiard room enriched with precious

boiseries. The doors appear to be decorated with sculptures yet in reality were painted by the same artists that decorated the luxurious furniture. The floors of

the villa develop according to a theory of real decorative art. The diverse and expressive atmosphere is portrayed through the eclectic stables in the rustic style,

the various rooms and kennels of the villa, the bird sanctuary and ice house.

The terraced garden with its large lawns and cave, stairways and fountain, was the object of particular attention and drew inspiration from historic traditions with

the presence of various styles. The property has a 6,5 hectares park, 20 hectares of olive and vineyards, and over 23 hectares of mixed woodland. The main

route through the park is accompanied by a suggestive basin roughly 80 metres long and fed by spring water. Away from the route the flat terrain extends into

an area which houses tennis facilities. Fresh spring water of excellent quality supplies the villa and is stored in two large underground reservoirs, once used to

power a hydraulic elevator and to water the beautiful Italian Gardens of almost 2,5 hectares.

Il primo nucleo di Pistoia sorse su una specie di terrazzo alluvionale formato da depositi creati dal

torrente Ombrone.

Se è vero che questo primo oppidum romano nacque per appoggiare le truppe in occasione delle guerre

liguri, non si possono negare precedenti passaggi di popolazioni ed etnie diverse. Seppur non ancora

presente durante il passaggio di Annibale durante la seconda guerra punica, presto la località acquistò

importanza grazie alla via Cassia che la attraversava.

Con il XII secolo, il benessere fece sì che la popolazione quadruplicasse, così come i commerci. La

floridezza di Pistoia però infastidiva Firenze che approfittò di motivazioni di grande politica, come i

contrasti tra papato e impero, per dichiarare lotta aperta alla nemica città che dovette, alla fine,

sottomettersi a Firenze.

Nel 1348 arrivò a Pistoia, così come in tutta Europa, la peste nera che scavò vuoti demografici ed

economici creando una situazione che permase immutata fino al XVII secolo quando il pistoiese Giulio

Rospigliosi venne eletto Papa con il nome di Clemente IX.

La città si risvegliò definitivamente con i Lorena ed acquistò sempre più autonomia tanto che, nel periodo

risorgimentale, ardì muoversi contro gli Austriaci. Quando il fascismo negli anni Venti comprese Pistoia

fra le nuove province create dal Duce, lo fece per questa fama di italianità e resistenza allo straniero

guadagnata dalla città nel Risorgimento.

The original settlement of Pistoia was built on a type of natural terrace formed by sediment from the

Ombrone River. The Roman oppidum or fortified settlement was built to support troops during the the

Ligurian Wars, although there are also traces of earlier peoples and ethnic groups in the area.

It did not exist at the time of Hannibal’s invasion during the Second Punic War, but the town soon took

on noteworthy importance, thanks to its position on the Via Cassia. After becoming a territorial district

of the Byzantine Empire, the town fell to the Longobards, whose presence is still well documented by

local place names.

The Germanic domination gave way to that of the Franks, albeit peacefully, and a closed, self-sufficient

type of economy became the norm for the town: feudalism arrived, with the Counts of the Guidi and

Cadolingi families fighting over possession of Pistoia and the surrounding territory. In the 12th century,

a newfound wellbeing led the population to increase fourfold, and trade also grew. However, Pistoia’s

good fortune irritated Florence, which tried to take advantage of large-scale political motives, such as

points of conflict between the Papacy and the Holy Roman Empire, in order to openly challenge the

enemy city, which was ultimately forced into subjugation by Florence.

In 1348 the plague broke out in Pistoia, as it did in the rest of Europe as well, inflicting large demographic

and economic losses, a situation that remained unchanged until the 17th century, when Giulio Rospigliosi,

a native of Pistoia, was elected Pope under the name of Clement IX. The city’s definitive revival came

under the Lorena family, and it became increasingly independent, to the point where, during the wars of

Italian Unification, it dared to move against the Austrians.

In the nineteen-twenties, when the fascist regime designated Pistoia as one of the new provincial seats,

Mussolini chose the city because of its reputation of devotion to Italian unity and resistance against

foreign occupiers.
