Creekside Resident Spotlight Shines on…

Barbara BuffWhen speaking with Barbara one is immediately drawn to the sparkle in her eyes and the mischief in her smile. Barbara was born June 23, 1934 in the predominately German community of Lockwood, Missouri. She moved to Springfield when she was eight years old and has been a lifelong resident of the Queen City. One of her favorite childhood memories is sitting with her Granny Byrd eating watermelon fresh from the garden. Barbara was in awe of her granny’s knife skills, something that could be traced back to her ancestor’s rich Native American heritage.

As a young girl Barbara was quite the skater. Sporting a black and red skirt and matching top she danced around the ring with ease. Roller skating takes coordination and a bit of finesse, these skills went out the window when Barbara was balancing two pieces of cream pie in the cafeteria at Central High School. She slipped and ended up wearing the pie from one end to the other. Add insult to injury when you include the entire football team as an audience. Chivalry was dead as they all were so busy laughing no one came to lend her a hand. Obviously, Barbara has a good sense of humor or she never would have shared that story.

Taylor’s Drive In was one of Barbara’s first jobs as a carhop. I envision it being like Arnold’s on Happy Days. She remembers dropping nine malts at one time (on the customer and his car), her boss informed her she would have to pay for the glasses….a whopping two cents a glass! At that time her hourly wage was $2.50 a night plus tips. She easily paid for those glasses with tips!

Barbara enjoys traveling. Her travel log includes exotic places like Belize and Cancun as well as homeland favorites like Washington, DC and Mackinaw Island. Gambling is one of Barbara’s favorite pastimes, and her

love of the games has dictated travel to Vegas and other points of interest. Money has also been a part of her professional life. Barbara worked for Commerce Bank for 25 years. She started her banking career as a secretary and retired as an Assistant Vice President in Residential Lending.

Barbara has one daughter, Terry. I had the pleasure of meeting her during my interview. It is obvious they are friends and enjoy each other’s company. They have traveled together and have even teamed up for an instrumental duet …mom on piano and daughter on organ. Barbara’s family also includes a lovely long haired black cat named Kesha….. If you visit you will more than likely have to imagine what she looks like because although Kesha is warm and fuzzy she does not feel that way towards strangers.

Barbara enjoys the neighborhood feel of the Crossings. She likes the fact that the caretaking, repair and planning are no longer her responsibility. Kesha enjoys the windows and the wildlife. Barbara is looking forward to meeting new people and becoming more active with her new Creekside neighbors.

What Was Black and White and Red All over?No not a sunburned penguin….It was Valentine’s Dinner at Creekside at Elfindale, Springfield, Missouri. Everything was splendid from our finely dressed residents to our perfectly prepared menu. The dining room was decorated in a classic palette of black, white and red with the addition of floral accents that included deep red roses and classic white lilies. A singing Valentine was presented by a quartet from Ozark

Showcase Sweet Adelines. The entertainment for the evening was topped off by our own rendition of the “Not So Newly

Wed Game” hosted by our own version of Bob Eubanks (a big thank you to Stewart

Bach). Ron and Doris Hurd were victorious in our game of love winning the Grand Prize that included dinner, a one night stay at a lovely hotel and lots of truffles. All in all the evening was filled with love and laughter…..and isn’t that what Valentine’s Day is really all about?

Creekside Chili Cook-OffCold temps bring on “chili” resident competition. The residents at the Crossings competed in the First Annual

Chili Cook-Off, Friday, January 25th. The competition was friendly but fierce. Winners were presented with engraved commemorative ladles. First place

was awarded to Ruth Parham, second went to Doris Hurd and third went to Phil Parham.

Divine Dining at CreeksideDining is Divine and a bit decadent at Creekside at Elfindale. Matt Lippelman, Executive Chef orchestrated a symphony of flavors for our residents to savor. From salad to dessert the experience was truly a work of art for the eye and the taste buds.
