All transition points in education are important – going to primary, joining secondary, picking courses at the end of S2 and perhaps the most important is about to appear for you – moving into the senior years for secondary education. For those of you that are already 16, the biggest change is that you are now voluntarily staying at school. In other words, you are making a conscious choice to stay in school and in many ways this changes your relationship with the school. For those not yet 16, this move happens as soon as you have your birthday.

As well as this change in relationship, this move is of great importance as you enter the final stage of your schooling, have the most significant examinations to sit and really start focusing on your career. Because of all of these factors, it is crucial that we agree appropriate courses and levels for you as you plan for either S5 or S5 and S6. Different decisions will/could be taken on the basis of whether you are staying for 1 year or 2 years. The key question for pupils with the help of their parents/carers is “What do I want to achieve by my leaving date?”

In order to help with this, we have produced this booklet. It starts with some general information and then gives you course outlines for the subjects and levels offered in the senior school. Please take time to read through the pages thoroughly and seek advice if you find anything unclear. Speak to your teachers, your Pupil Support teacher, research entrance qualifications for courses in universities, colleges and/or requirements for certain training opportunities and employment. Do not rely on hearsay. Entrance requirements change regularly. Time taken to do these things will be a valuable asset in the long term.

As part of the process of choosing subjects, the school will organise an Information Evening for pupils and parents, devote some PSE time for discussions and then hold a Course Choice Day when your initial choices will be recorded. We regard these as initial choices as there may well be some changes to be made after you receive your Standard Grade results.

22S5 Course Choice 2013

Courses in senior school are short and very crammed, demanding hard work from day one. If all certificate courses in schools were athletic races, the Standard Grades would be the 800 metres, while senior school course are the 110 metre hurdles. The difference is huge. In the 800 metres, a slow start can be overcome by a readjustment and a sprint finish, the 110 metre hurdles require concentration from the start and a focus and plan that does not change as you sprint between the hurdles, jump the hurdles and push hard right the way to the finish. Tripping up on a hurdle can lead to your race being over!

Linlithgow AcademyLinlithgow Academys5 course choices5 course choice

Courses in the senior school are called National Qualifications and are offered at the following levels:

Advanced Higher (S6 only)HigherIntermediate 2 (similar to a Standard Grade Credit award)Intermediate 1(similar to a Standard Grade General award)Access (similar to a Standard Grade Foundation award) In S5 you should be looking to study a course at a level above (more difficult) you were certificated in at the end of S4. The diagram below may help explain:

By the end of S4 Studying in S5

Foundation pass in Mathematics Intermediate 1 in MathematicsGeneral (Grade 3) pass in History Intermediate 2 in HistoryGeneral (grade 3) pass in PE Intermediate 2 PECredit (Grade 1) pass in Computing Higher ComputingCredit (Grade 2) pass in French Intermediate 2 or Higher French

Teachers will consider your enthusiasm, maturity, potential and the work demands from your other choices before recommending which level you should take in S5, as well as possible levels in S6, if you choose to stay on and continue with that subject. Pupil Support teachers will meet with you on the Course Choice Day to discuss these recommendations and input your new course choices.

All courses, no matter their level, are structured in the same way. They are made up of 3 units of 40 hours each and at the end of each unit there is an assessment (the “hurdles” mentioned earlier) which you sit in class. There is also a national exam at the end of the whole course. To get the complete Higher or Intermediate award, you have to pass all 3 internal assessments and the final exam.

Success in Unit Assessments is fundamental to course success. Students who fail the Unit Assessment will be given one re-sit opportunity.  This re-sit should happen, where practical, within one month of the original assessment and on a date agreed between the student and teacher. Students who fail the re-sit can remain on the course and sit the final exam; however they will not gain an

44S5 Course Choice 2013

overall award in the academic year. Only under exceptional circumstances will a further re-sit be permitted.

The new timetable starts in mid-June and attendance in the 2 weeks before the summer holidays is particularly important as the course work begins from the first lesson and work to be completed over the summer may well feature in the first fortnight.

This intensity of work will continue and subject teachers and Pupil Support teachers will be closely monitoring progress so that we can quickly take decisions about appropriateness of courses and possible alternatives.

Good luck in 5th year, by its nature it is a very hard working year for pupils and but it can also be a very rewarding one.

Technology Faculty Technology Faculty intermediate 1 & 2intermediate 1 & 2

Course details?Course details? This is a course which has been developed to allow students to gain knowledge and experience in wood construction, machining and finishing techniques.

The course is open to any student who has completed the basic S1 and S2 course in craftwork. Obviously you must be able to work safely in a workshop. An increasing amount of independent working is a feature of the course.

The coursework involves students manufacturing a range of items, including a cabinet, mirror stand and a table. Depending on your level of achievement you will be assessed by your class teacher at Int. 1 or Int. 2. Students will be required to contribute to some of the cost of coursework, as for other craft courses.

By the end of the course, students will be able to select appropriate materials and tools necessary for a woodwork task and have the necessary skills to carry it out. The course is considered useful for a number of reasons:

It can be purely for recreation to reduce the intensity of your overall school week

It can be seen as an excellent foundation course for someone who wishes to pursue a career in this area. It is a lead in course for further work at college

It can be simply to give basic DIY skills necessary for men and women in future life. This is something that we all have to face at some time, particularly when we set up our own home.
