The research community has lacked the ability to link researchers and scholars with their professional activities.

What is the problem?

•  Discoverability within and across databases •  Acknowledgement and citation of contributions •  Author, grantee, and faculty record management •  Research reporting and impact assessment

Another illustrative example: Wei Wang

“Estimates by China's Ministry of Public Security suggest that more than 1.1 billion people — around 85% of China's population — share just 129 surnames. Problems with abbreviations, ordering of given names and surnames and inconsistent journal practices heighten the confusion.” http://www.nature.com/news/2008/080213/full/451766a.html

Identifiers for Researchers

Solving this problem requires:

v unique and persistent identifier that can be used throughout one’s career, across professional activities, affiliations, and languages

v identifiers that are integrated in standard workflows, embedded in works metadata, independent of platform, and can be linked with other IDs

12 November 2013 orcid.org 6

v ORCID provides a non-proprietary registry of persistent unique identifiers for researchers, and open APIs for the community

v ORCID is an independent non-profit organization supported by member fees

v ORCID code is available on the GitHub open source repository and we support community efforts to develop tools and services

ORCID

12 November 2013 orcid.org 7

v Data marked public by researchers is published annually by ORCID under a CC0 waiver

Registry use is international

•  22 countries >10,000 unique visitors

•  61 countries >1,000 unique visitors

•  Registry supports multiple character sets

•  Content in Spanish, French, English, and Chinese

Data model

Courtesy of Herbert van de Sompel, http://www.slideshare.net/hvdsomp/towards-a-machineactionable-scholarly-communication-system

Persistent iDs for researchers allow “contributors” to move from periphery to center in research information data models.
