Direct search of your email for yahoo, googlemail, hotmail, msn – etc.

Otherwise import contacts

Just enter email addresses

Based on your existing connections

(Some people don’t have real accounts.)

If you don’t share a group you could always join one they belong to.

Connecting with someone implies you know them.

• They will have access to people you know (so think before you link to competitors – will you find out more information than you are giving away?) • Others may ask you about them and vice versa• You will get updates on their activity• Linked in lets you invite colleagues, classmates, friends and business partners without entering their email addresses.• BUT if recipient indicates they don’t know you, you may end up only being able to invite anyone via their email address (a lot harder). This happens if a number of people indicate they don’t know you. Not currently possible to find out how many people have said they don’t know you.

But what is the point?

•LION’s (Linked In Open Networker) will generally accept any invites.•But.. Are they harvesting email addresses?•They can still “I don’t know you”•Are they a valid introduction to a possible connection?

Accept if you know the person (or don’t mind being connected – I don’t know David here but we have lots of business interests in common and he lives in Kent.)

You could reply (drop down from Accept option).

… or report as Spam if the invite is written that way.

Invite is moved to archive without accepting. You can view it later if you get to know the person.

The other person won’t know you have ignored so may try to connect with you again, but you won’t get the reminder to say you haven’t responded yet.

If you then click on “I don’t know (name)” that person is prevented from sending you further invites.

It also flags to Linked in that they may need to restrict, suspend or close a users account
