The leitmotif of digitization has elegantly rid itself of the uto-pia of a Single Source of Truth, with which PLM always came along, knowing fully well that in most cases it cannot be im-plemented with reasonable effort. Many knowledge sourc-es in companies are distributed extensively over different-ly structured data pools that are beyond the reach of PLM and its data models. Digital Thread can be used here as a connecting element between all these treasure pits.

Digital Twin with a bright Future

The meteoric rise of the Digital Twin this year is of a com-pletely different quality. This is by no means a question of concrete practical implementation, as is now the case with the Digital Thread with Conweaver‘s Linked Data technology. After all, with the Digital Twin there is now a consensus in understanding what and which purpose it can serve. Respect should be paid to this fact, since the Digital Twin offers enor-mous economic potential. Only with its help is it possible to convert the much-cited product-related services into reve-nues with minimal business risk.

While last year‘s Linked Data 2017 Workshop set itself the challenging task of exploring the nature of the Digital Transformation and its interrelationships between infor-mation objects and knowledge, it was only logical that the organizer took it one step further this year in asking for the relation between its Linked Data technology and the Digital Twin. Both Data Layer and Digital Twin are something like „The Rookie of the Year“, the best newcomers to digitiza-tion in the last twelve months.

Digital Thread develops PLM Idea further

Surely, at first glance the people at Conweaver might view this differently. After all, the dynamic linking of databases - circulating the US as a „Digital Thread“ - has been officially documented as a business purpose since the founding of the company in 2007.

At least, the community in general has now grown to under-stand that the IT infrastructure approach „Digital Thread“ is consistently refining the PLM idea: Relationships around data and the data itself are reconnected from many busi-ness processes and enterprise systems to a larger entity - not only from the PLM domains development, manufacturing or technical service. And the Digital Twin stands for the bigger picture. If you like, it represents a Knowledge Graph of the

tive maintenance, which is likely to inspire plant engineering in particular.

The Sharing Economy has already crossed the border to busi-ness-to-business, thus machines are no longer sold exclusive-ly, but their performance is sometimes merely booked. Or to put it another way: Do you have to buy sensors if you only care about process data? With the Digital Twin, the transition from owner-oriented to service-oriented business models is just a stone‘s throw away.

Data Consistency and Corporate Knowledge

Whoever really tries to understand a product in the depth of its complexity should intensively deal with this question:

How to achieve End2End Transparency? This is exactly the bridge-building motto of the Workshop Linked Data 2018.

It is obvious that the data pool and its relationships implicit-ly express enterprise knowledge. Essentially, these „assets“, understood as the linking of individual information artifacts, represent added value over isolated individual information. This is because Linked Data technology allows technical contexts to be used explicitly to gain knowledge and support decision-making.

Linked Data raises the information artifacts and business objects to a higher level, refines the individual information by linking them together and referencing them back to the systems from which they originate. Conweaver is minimally invasive, because the existing processes are not affected at first. By decoupling the linked artifacts, it is possible to create technical contexts that pave the way for the creation of the Digital Twin.

Workshop Linked Data 2018Idea & Concept - One and a Half Days Linked Data

In three sessions, our experts showed what is new from our side. How do we implement projects, what were the experi-ences from previous workshops, what are the technological trends, where is the market heading?

Day 2 - The Strategy Day

On the main day, in the usual format, we discussed interdisci-plinary of World Cafés at a higher, more strategic level – the opportunity to evaluate unique ideas and approaches from different industries and domains in multidisciplinary groups. The participants were the protagonists!

We presented hypotheses and discussed them controver-sially with the participants, all from renowned manufacturing companies and institutions, allowing them to think ahead and design concepts that will support them in their day-to-day business of getting closer to the vision of the Digital Twin.

In four World Café rounds, the participants continuously developed a thesis under the guidance of experts. Thus, it was possible that all participants could bring in experiences, ideas and opinions to each thematic complex. In addition, the context of a topic was always questioned, the effects on its users, which strategies and processes would be affected and what could be an obstacle to its implementation.

We are pleased to already have discussed the linking of data in the environment of distinct manufacturing for the fourth time at this year‘s workshop. Together, we have re-considered the traditional and taken a close look at new approaches.

At the past workshops, many participants expressed the wish to immerse themselves even more in practice, to involve the operational level of data linking more closely. What must a software, a system really be able to do at the workplace? Which interfaces make sense, how is the user experience (UX)? What data does an engineer need for his daily work? Even, what can Conweaver do here? We want to take this into account by expanding the concept and the workshop.

Thus, we welcomed you back to the darmstadtium Science and Congress Centre on 25th and 26th October and addressed all stakeholders of the project process with this extension.

Day 1 - The Application Day

Aimed at Conweaver fans and those who want to become one, everyone was invited to join a table for a lively exchange of experiences, from which we also learned. Expert discus-sions at eye level on topics from your area of responsibility. Because you know what‘s important!

Based on the thesis „Successful decision making can only be made possible through the Linked Data Layer, because only this layer is flexible and customizable“, the four groups of par-ticipants have reflected on the aspects of

1. Decision making,

2. Definition of the information model,

3. Transparency and expressiveness,

4. System architecture and

5. Data security.

First of all, the thesis mentioned at the beginning about a suc-cessful decision making in connection with the Linked Data Layer was accepted in principle. Of course, the participants did not like the „only“ formulation. They did not want to go that far with exclusivity, since other concepts are also con-ceivable, which could be just as flexible and adaptable.

This course of conversation corresponded to the organizer‘s idea, as they wanted the thesis to stimulate discussion. Nev-ertheless, it should be noted that a technology comparable to that of Conweaver is currently being sought in the market in vain.

Starting Point

• Which architecture designs allow a decoupled structure of a Linked Data Layer?

• How up-to-date is the Linked Data Layer really or can it be?

• How flexible should the architecture behave regarding business cases and data sources? Keywords: configurability, model-based architecture

The intelligent linking of data is becoming more and more important, especially if it derives from different silos, as is common today. In general, this means increased transparency for the user, but above all the identification of correlations across individual artifacts results in substantial added value. Linked Data and a correspondingly agile architecture serve this purpose and have the potential to release such added value for companies.

At the Table...

User Experience (UX) is a well-known term from software de-sign that says everything and yet nothing. The most important feature of an impeccable UX is the exact fulfillment of user expectations without disruptions or media breaks. UX stands for what users think and do during their interaction.

And those who talk about modern user guidance (UI) talk about apps. No question, the intuitive operation of apps helps to process cross-domain content, accessed via the Linked Data Layer, bite-sized. This is because the newly linked content initially turns the designated experts of a field into laymen, as new fields of application have been added. Apps can help to reduce complexity here and thus increase the feeling of familiarity with the system, for example through role-specific views of the data.

In addition, the discussion groups at this theme table first had to familiarize themselves with the dialectic of „additional complexity/but also more benefit“. After all, each user group, be it marketing or sales, controlling, mechanical or software development, or rather production, has its own view of the data, and therefore thinks and acts differently. When looking at the complex of issues one must not forget, that UX is also an expression of a decomposition of the Digital Twin, so the view of the participants.

Starting Point

• Information processing - how does the added value of linking also reach the user?

• Design, interfaces and user guidance analogous to „private“ applications?

• Provision of information - App vs. existing authoring and data systems

• Comprehensive portal or role/process-specific app?

The human being is a creature of habit - from the private en-vironment, users are used to straightforward applications and intuitive user guidance, even more: They are taken for grant-ed. To this end, technical applications in the professional en-vironment are increasingly being optimized, not only to push the on-boarding of the „digital natives“.

End users can only do their jobs effectively if the informa-tion they need is easily accessible. In addition to the mere provision of data, this requires, above all, clever visualizations of the interrelationships across media breaks.

The Link Data Graph offers possibilities of decision recommendation that previous systems do not offer. The implementation of a recommendation engine is therefore conceivable as we know it from Amazon and its purchase recommendations.

polarizing hypothesis, which was truly intended as a stimulus rather than a serious approach.

Of course, it was not long before the criticism of the use of the term „panacea“ was heard, since Linked Data is just a method in a set of networking scenarios. Some even spoke of a „homeopathic“ remedy, without side effects, holistic and sustainable. The approach is more comparable to a diagno-sis because it reveals the „disease“. The therapy can then be based on Linked Data analyses (=use cases).

The use of artificial intelligence is recommended when it comes to making connections or patterns you did not know about before. Therefore, the participants were of the opinion that Linked Data is a more useful basis for AI applications as the source data itself. However, one should not trust AI blind-ly because oftentimes it is not possible to determine with which algorithms the respective applications operated. The discussion participants therefore recommend being inspired by one‘ s own experiences.

Classification in Practice

According to the panelists, the key to understanding Linked Data technology is whether it is possible to understand the added value it offers compared to other methods such as Data Warehouse, Business Intelligence, Big Data or Data

• How can the creation of contexts be classified in the current discussion of buzz words?

• Where does Linked Data fit into the concert of paradigms and what contribution can linking make to the individual approaches?

• Can Linked Data mend what belongs together?

IoT, Big Data, Industry 4.0, Systems Engineering, PLM, BI or KI - all of them ultimately mean a constantly growing flood of data. The sheer volume, frequently coupled with structural resistance, often exceeds the possibilities of its transformation into information or knowledge. Can linking help here?

At the Table...

Well-known companies have opted for Conweaver technolo-gy and therefor successfully embarked on the path to digitali-zation and the Digital Twin - Linked Data has thus established itself in the market. One could now be led confidently to say that „Linked Data is the panacea for ailing information retriev-al“. The four discussion rounds were confronted with this

It is obvious that new business segments can only be de-veloped if the usual heterogeneous IT infrastructures can be linked with each other. In the past, however, it has been shown that the Brownfield approach, with its lengthy process-es and master data management as a strategy for the single source of truth, has proved unsuccessful. This thematic table therefore turned to the question of whether the increasing contextualization of content and Systems Engineering (SE) could be regarded as a kind of „Greenfield“ in the Brownfield of conventional engineering IT. The World Café was opened with the following questions:

• What influence does the increasing complexity of product development have on Systems Engineering and Linked Data?

• Which role do new business models thereby play?

• How will our understanding of collaboration change?

• Do we have to start from different ideas about the product life cycle?

• Is the interdisciplinary approach „From mechanics to software“ still effective?

Starting Point

• Which portfolio of data systems do I need (best of breed)?

• Compatibility issues are irrelevant due to linking?

• Learning curve - learning from Brownfield or restart?

The digital transformation brings enormous change for com-panies. Old structures must be questioned, as the market has not already thrown them over anyway. Business models must be adapted, rethought or even completely redeveloped. All back to start?

Yet, not every company has the opportunity for a fresh start on the Greenfield. However, it makes sense for a (new) con-ception to at least approach the process this way mentally: If I could start from scratch, how would I proceed, what would be my method(s)? One option: Systems Engineering. Due to its holistic End2End approach, it can be the method of choice, as it covers the production planning process, requirements management up to production and/or after sales.
