Music school goes from strength to strength

BLACKPOOL MUSIC ACADEMY MUSIC FOR ALLFor many years, the Adult Education Centre at Carr Head Lane in leafy Poulton-Le-Fylde, a small market town just outside Blackpool was host to musical keyboard tuition. In the authority’s wisdom, they decided that all courses should include examinations and many students in a variety of subjects

felt that the pressure was put on what had been previously a “leisure” subject. When the keyboard classes eventually closed in 2004 John Shaw and his 40 fellow students plus their tutor Jim Lomas were determined that they should not be deprived of their hobby and that their learning activities should continue and John shaw formed a committee to discuss the possibilities of forming their own music school.

The original committee was set up and soon managed to secure funding from the Lottery “Awards For All” and various other sources both local and further afield. A home was found at the Springfield Methodist Church in Bispham (North shore), Blackpool. Several spacious rooms adjoining the church meant that large classes could be accommodated and the first keyboard classes started in January 2006.

The classes commenced with 22 students and two keyboard tutors – Stephen Austin (a name familiar in the organ world as a performer and first class teacher) and Jim Lomas, a professional musician and teacher of many years experience.

And now in 2011, Blackpool Music Academy has grown from strength to strength and funding from the Liverpool Foundation as enabled BMA to widen its facilities to include not only group tuition for keyboard, guitar and Music Theory but also 1-2-1 tuition for piano, organ, percussion, vocal training, and other instruments whether at the Springfield Church location or in the pupils’ own home during most days of the week.

A team of qualified and experienced teachers are available for beginners, intermediate and advanced students whether

children or adults.

Blackpool Music Academy became a community interest company in February 2007 then in September 2007 BMA was linked to the charity “Blackpool Music School”.

Recently, examinations have been introduced, but this time the students can choose to study for these or not. For guitar and percussion the

“Rock School” syllabus is used and for keyboard, piano and organ students, either the ABRSM or ICMA syllabus is favoured. The range and style of music covered around the various classes is amazing – from Bach to Beatles, from George Gershwin to Lady Ga-Ga!!

The academy has achieved 100% pass rate in all

examinations taken and is very proud of this. The academy is the only music school to cover all ages from 08 to 80 plus under one roof.

Since January 2010 it has started to do outreach work with the mind organization in Blackpool and recently has moved into helping care homes with activities learning the keyboard music. It has also secured the use of the Centre for independent living on Mondays and shortly Thursdays helping the deprived and disabled in music therapy vocal guitar keyboard.

The Academy this year 2011 is about to invest in its own music centre with a three hundred thousand pounds investment it has secured a mortgage through The social Enterprise Lone Fund for the building, CSL furniture has donated a car park for a 2 year period for 30 cars. This is been placed in the south shore area at the end of Waterloo road of Blackpool. Accommodating facilities such as using the building for all types of music tuition, a charity music shop, coffee shop and a full recording sound proof studio, also having other uses as a community centre etc The academy is into its 5 year period and has 100 students 7 tutors all with special quality’s in teaching. Students are always assured of a warm welcome.

Lion’s support for local charities and welfare cases.

Details have been released of donations given to local organisations and for local welfare cases by Lytham St. Annes Lions Club during their last financial year ending June 30th.

Fylde Scouts received £4000 to help their building fund to rebuild their burned down headquarters and a further £600 was given to Lytham in Bloom to cover summer and winter planting of the Lion’s barrier baskets outside Stringer’s department store.

Family support charity Home Start Fylde received £1000 and the Mayoral Charities received £500 in recognition of her support at various Lions functions and fund raising events during the year whilst a similar amount was spent in supporting a local sports group.

Of particular note are the 46 individual donations totalling some £6047 distributed locally in support of welfare appeals to the Lion’s Welfare Funds.

Said Lion’s President David Eames,’ We are enormously grateful to all the people and businesses of the borough and we are publishing details of how we distribute our funds in order that they may be seen by those who have given us such wonderful support.’

Su Pollard backs Blackpool Council’s bid to recruit more foster carers and adoptive parents

Blockbuster musical ‘Annie’ arrived at Blackpool’s Grand Theatre at the end of November and its star, actress Su Pollard, took time out to back Blackpool Council’s drive to recruit more foster carers and adoptive parents.

The actress, who plays the scheming Miss Hannigan in the popular musical, met local super foster carer Sue Mansell, who has fostered 27 children in recent years.

Su said she was overwhelmed by the support Sue Mansell had offered, saying: “I’m not saying it’s not hard, but can you imagine the joy and pleasure of giving somebody a chance in life. I think even fostering one child is a heck of a commitment and Sue has done it 27 times over. I’m sure you get a lot more back than you put in.”

The actress, also well known from her role in TV comedy ‘Hi-de-Hi’, is in charge of an orphanage in ‘Annie.’ She added: “It’s marvellous - in ‘Annie’ I struggle with 12 children.”

Sue Mansell recently contributed to a North West Big Book of Fostering with the comment: “I love fostering: never boring, highly rewarding, life changing, truly fulfilling.”

Sue, who has three children of her own, said: “The rewards I’ve experienced are amazing - it’s so effective, you can make a difference.”

She stressed that anyone considering adoption or fostering will find valuable support offered by Blackpool Council and other agencies, adding: “There’s a massive, massive network of support that I was never aware of before.”

Blackpool Council’s leader Councillor Simon Blackburn said: “There is an ongoing need for adoptive parents and foster carers who can make a real difference to children’s lives at a crucial time. I’d urge anyone who is interested in finding out more about what’s involved to contact the Council for more information.”

The adoption and fostering teams can be contacted on 01253 477888 for an information pack or visit the Council’s website at www.blackpool.gov.uk/services/a-f/adoption/. You can also email [email protected]

SandAid are a collective of amateur unsigned musicians who have recorded an original Christmas song, which is due for download release on the 5th December through iTunes and other leading download retailers. The song has been nearly 12 months in the planning, and was the brainchild of Rob Hulme and his wife Anne-Marie Hulme who were fed up with the tradition of Christmas songs being ruined by the X Factor. Rob was involved in writing the song We’ve Still Got Christmas along with co-writers Ian Hooper and Jeff White, and we wanted to write a song which had a traditional feel, without being too cheesy, and incorporated many of the styles and talents of our fellow Blackpool bands. We live in uncertain times at the moment, and the lyrics try to establish that no matter what pain, suffering, hardship, or loss touches our every day lives, the one thing which remains constant, is how we try to celebrate Christmas, which we hope helps to consider our perspective of life and create opportunities for change. We are also donating 50p from every 79p sale to BBC Children in Need through sales over the entire Christmas period, as we feel that the song also has a meaning for disadvantaged children, some of which don’t

even experience the happiness and values of the festive season.

We decided to call the band ‘SandAid’ following on from the inspiration of Bob Geldof’s Band Aid. The song was recorded back in June at West Orange Studios near Preston, famous for recording the number one hit ‘Brimful of Asher’ by Cornershop, and is a mix of genres, which represent both the modern and traditional styles of music listened to today. Bobby Ball and Black Lace also kindly donated their time, and feature alongside the many amateur musicians and singers who represent a selection of the many talents which perform in the local bars and pubs in and around the Fylde coast area. There are also some up and coming singers involved, along with children from St Chads and Carr Head Schools, Poulton.

It has been twenty one years since an original Christmas song reached the number one position in the music charts, and for that fact we would like to try and get the tradition of a true Christmas song into a pole position this year.

Our song is available to download from and other leading download retailers from December 5th

The Kirkham SingersThe Kirkham Singers, a local community choir, is celebrating their 10th Anniversary year and they are looking forward to performing in a joint concert with Blackpool Brass Band.

The Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Fylde have been invited to attend along with the Mayors of Kirkham and Wesham and local councillors.

The concert will include many loved Christmas songs and popular carols for everyone to enjoy. Background info to the choir

The choir was founded in 2001 under the direction of Kathryn Barnett-Battersby who is a local singer and Music Teacher. It was reformed from the local inter-church choir of which Kathryn had been a member as a schoolgirl. This small, keen group of singers, wanted to keep singing as an important part of the community and so The Kirkham Singers was born.To mark their 10 year anniversary, the choir has recently recorded their own CD which will be on sale at the concert. It includes a wide variety of musical styles including classical, gospel, pop ballads and songs from musicals. The choir is a very friendly and supportive group and is open to anyone who shows ability, commitment, and above all enjoys singing with others. We now have a membership of over forty members singing

in a 4 part arrangement of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass. We rehearse each Monday evening at St Michael’s Church room, Kirkham.

We perform locally, across the North West and the Lake District at concerts and charity functions, weddings and cocktail parties. Our repertoire encompasses a wide variety of musical tastes. We try to offer something for everyone to enjoy, we love making music together and sharing it with others. We are all very grateful for the success our Musical Director has achieved with the choir.

A proportion of the money raised from our performances goes to at least two chosen charities each year.

Located in what has become Blackpool’s South Shore dining hotspot on Highfield Road, Constantine’s opened in 2008 and offers both Italian and British cuisine in a vibrant and warm atmosphere. The restaurant has a very Mediterranean feel inside with large exotic murals on the walls and contemporary furniture. It is split into two areas, a comfortable bar for pre-dinner drinks and a main dining area with room for 50 diners in all. The ethos here is value for money with all food freshly prepared on the premises using local suppliers where possible but at keen prices. Expect dishes such as sea bass, shoulder of lamb, pork loin and steaks all

cooked with fresh sauces and priced at around £10. They have a weekly changing specials board and an early bird menu from just £8.99 for 2 courses and a drink. Parties of up to 50 people can hire out the restaurant and plenty of on-street parking is always free. Constantine’s is open Monday to Saturday, 5-10pm and Sunday, 3-8pm.

Non Surgical Cosmetic Treatments

Non Surgical treatment has become increasingly popular for both women and men over the past decade. Indeed a troll through the internet can leave you confused and baffled as to which clinic to choose and what treatments to choose help improve your appearance. I have chosen the two commonest non surgical treatments offered by most clinics, that is, Botox and Dermal fillers.

Botox (anti-wrinkle injection) is mainly used to treat the upper face and improve expression lines on the forehead, brow and around the eyes. It works by relaxing the muscle in these areas, hence soften the lines formed over the years. With regular treatment lines can actually disappear. Indeed there are a number of different brands of anti-wrinkle injections but they all essentially work in the same way.

Dermal fillers on the other hand is generally used to treat the lower part of the face especially lines around the nose, mouth, upper lip and chin areas. Dermal fillers are also used to give volume and shape to both upper and lower lips. There are also a huge range of branded fillers but the most well know is Restylane. Fillers are injected along the facial lines to help lift and smoothen their appearance. Essentially they replace the hyaluronic acid in the skin lost with age. Results can be very user dependent so make sure you choose a fully qualified practitioner.

At SL Medical we take the time to understand and address our client’s needs and expectations before taking any decision to treat. That is why we offer all our clients a free no obligation consultation and provide expert advice on the range of treatments we offer. All treatments are performed by a fully qualified doctor.

Visit our website at www.slmedical.co.uk for more information and testimonials from just a few of our clients.

Three YMCA’s teams reached the quarter finals of Lancs FA’s County Cups during November, the Under 13s, 14s and 15s, and this is the first time ever that three YMCA have reached that stage of these prestigeous competitions in one season. The Under 15s are looking to achieve an incredible ‘treble’ having won the County Cup in the two previous seasons at Under 14s and 13s. The team remains unbeaten in the league so far having beaten main rivals South Shore Youth, champions for the past four seasons, 2-0 last month. The Under 14s have been left a little depleted by two players having left to join Preston North End’s Centre of Excellence last month after two other boys joined Blackpool FC at the start of the

campaign. They only managed to muster up 10 players for two games and lost their unbeaten record at Poulton Youth but in recent weeks a couple of additions to the squad have been made although neither are eligible for County Cup games. In the PDP 7-A-Side League the Under 9s lost their unbeaten record against BJFF but are still in contention for league honours as are the Under 10s. ‘Lozz’ Rose, SecretaryLytham St Annes YMCA Football ClubTel: (H) 01253 714082 (Mb) 07957 596326

ews Council’s ‘smart’

approach to fly-tippingCouncil staff are to increase patrols of back-streets and spray waste material with “smart water” in a bid to stamp out the scourge of fly-tipping.

Fly-tipping can attract fines of up to £5,000 for miscreants. Even householders can be punished under national legislation designed to prevent unregistered “cowboys” taking away rubbish on the cheap and then dumping it.

The “smart water” will be sprayed on collections of rubbish that staff suspect may find its way to lay-bys and fields. Each spray contains a unique genetic code allowing the rubbish to be traced to source.

Phil Dent, Fylde Council environmental health principal officer, said: “Fly-tipping is still a major problem in Fylde. The area is a prime target for people who illegally deposit waste.

“We have successfully prosecuted a number of people but the number of incidents in Fylde is not decreasing.

“Most people use proper disposal routes, but we do know that most waste dumped is originally from householders who are legally responsible for the correct disposal of waste.

“Anyone who takes waste away for householders must hold a Waste Carriers’ Licence - and resi-dents are responsible for making sure that they only employ someone who has a licence. “The council will be stepping up patrols in back alleyways and leafleting hotspot areas. We have purchased Smartwater and will be spraying sus-pect loads and accumulations as well as actively pursuing any resident who allows waste to be taken by a non-registered carrier.”

Residents with large household items to dispose of can take them to the Recycling Centre on Saltcotes Road or can arrange for the council to collect them for a small charge.

Anyone approached by a waste carrier should ask for their licence number. Licences can be checked by ringing the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506

People complaining about fly-tipping should contact the hotline on 01253 658657 or submit a report online via: www.fylde.gov.uk

Check the food hygiene rating this Christmas

With Christmas fast approaching plans are being made for the festive period. If you’re organising a gathering with family, friends or work colleagues at a local restaurant, pub or hotel don’t just check out the menu, check out the food hygiene rating as well.

Good food hygiene is getting easier to spot these days with the recent introduction of the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme. Restaurants, pubs, hotels, (as well as cafes, takeaways and other places that sell or serve food) are now being rated from 0 - 5 on their hygiene standards when a food hygiene inspection is carried out by Fylde Borough Council.

It’s easy to check out the ratings by looking them up online at: food.gov.uk/ratings. Christmas party goers can also look out for the distinctive green and black stickers that businesses are encouraged to display at their outlets to tell their customers the rating they were given.

Mike Walker, Fylde Council’s Head of Public Protection said: ‘When dining out, you’ll choose to go to a place where you like the food and you know you’ll have a good time. It makes sense to look before you book and check out the food hygiene rating as well. The scheme was introduced in Fylde on 1st June 2011 and there are over 350 premises serving food in the Fylde that have already been awarded a rating of 4 or above. Councillor Tom Threlfall, Portfolio Holder for Environmen,t added: “We are pleased at the high standards being achieved by many of our food businesses and officers will continue to work with owners and managers to secure further improvements at establishments throughout the Borough.”

ews Catriona Stewart, Head of the Food Hygiene

Ratings Team at the FSA added: ‘The FHRS is all about putting the consumer first, supplying people with useful information on which to base their choice of where to eat. The FSA is working in partnership with Fylde Borough Council and other local authorities to introduce this scheme nationally. It means that when you eat out - be it in the area you live or further away - you can easily compare hygiene standards of different food outlets.

Recent research by the Agency has shown that nearly 17 million people suffer from stomach upsets in the UK every year and many more instances go unreported. Nobody wants to have their Christmas festivities ruined and as far as food hygiene ratings go there’s safety in numbers - so it’s good to know.

Be the mayor’s guest at Christmas fair

The mayor and mayoress of Fylde are inviting members of the public to a

Christmas fair and afternoon tea at the town hall. Councillor Howard Henshaw

and Councillor Karen Henshaw will be hosts at 3pm on Wednesday 7 December with proceeds going to

Home Start Fylde, a charity that supports young families.

Attractions include the sale of Christmas food and gifts,

jewellery, a raffle and tombola.

Tickets cost £5 and are available on the door or from Home Start

Fylde on 01253 728615.

The Lytham St. Annes Lions Club

26TH ANNUAL SWIMARATHON CHILDREN (and adults) SWIMMING FOR CHILDREN.

Lytham St. Annes Lions Club have announced that arrangements are now well in hand for their 26th Annual Fund Raising Swimarathon.

The event will take place in the YMCA Swimming Pool, St. Annes on Sunday, January 29th. 2012, commencing at 9a.m. when the first 6 teams of swimmers will enter the water under the direction of the Mayor and Mayoress of Fylde acting as the day’s Official Starters.

This year’s main beneficiary will echo the Lions’ continuing annual theme of ‘children swimming to raise funds to help children less fortunate than themselves’ and it is intended that the major proportion of funds raised will be directed towards helping children who find themselves in families who are victims of domestic abuse.

A confidential distribution of funds will be made through the Fylde Coast Womens’ Aid charity and the Lions have already received undertakings from them to the

effect that all monies donated from the Swimarathon will be ring-fenced and used exclusively for the benefit of children in such unhappy and demoralising circumstances.

Said Lions Swimarathon Organiser, Joe Woods,’ So far this annual event has raised almost £165,000 in its 25 years existence and the most of it has been used to help local charitable causes in the Fylde. The 26th, next January will help local children once more and we are hoping that the event will again receive the level of support it has received in the past from the swimmers’ sponsors.’

Further details and Application forms are available by telephoning Joe on 01772 679766.

Lion’s president David Eames added,’ It is staggering to hear of the number of cases of domestic abuse which are reported to the local police and FCWA each year, and the Lions want to help the children of such families who find themselves in the aftermath of such circumstances. We have given financial support to the FCWA charity in a general way on previous occasions and we respect the confidential manner in which they go about what they do without national or any formal local funding. The club now wants to direct help from the Swimarathon solely for the benefit of children involved in such cases and we hope that we will again have the level of support from swimmers and sponsors which we have enjoyed in the past’.
