Wyre supports Cameron's 'Stay Green' campaign

One boy's pledge to save the planet has been given a helping hand from Wyre Borough Council's new Chief Executive Donna Hall. 12 year old Cameron Donnelly, from Carleton, recently visited the Civic Centre to speak about his eco-conscious efforts to protect Poulton and ask the coun-cil to help him in his mission to spread his school's 'stay green' message across the borough. Cameron is a pupil at Baines High School in Poulton-le-Fylde where they have been awarded Eco School status and it is these green thinking principles that he wants to promote in the community by setting up a special eco-group for the people of Poulton. Litter picks, cleaner streets, recycling and protecting our parks and open spaces, together with their habi-tats, are just some of the environmentally friendly things which Cameron wants to raise awareness of locally with the help of his school and local council. Cameron said: “If the council can work with me here we could start to make a big difference and start to make the planet’s future brighter. We could start a Wyre Borough Council club, like my school did. “One thing I would like to start in the community is putting much more compost bins around the place. This would save our environment by not dumping our lovely grounds with rubbish that people can’t be both-ered to recycle.” And Wyre Borough Council has been happy to oblige Cameron in his environmental quest with help from its Street Scene Team, who work hard to make local streets cleaner and greener, to promote this in schools and in the wider community to encourage local pride. Wyre's Countryside Ranger Service will also be lend-ing their support to this important cause with practical support too. They plan to visit Baines to give talks to students and organise nature inspired activities for young people and their families to enjoy, including building bird boxes and organising beach cleans, as well as put-ting Cameron in touch with like-minded community groups such as the Poulton In Bloom volunteers to link into existing local activities. Plans for a recycling competition to promote street tidiness to young people are under way, a guest col-umn for Cameron in the council's Wyre Voice commu-nity magazine, with links to Wyre's website, is in the

pipeline and Cameron has also received a personal invita-tion from Wyre's Chief Executive to present his ideas to all coun-cillors at a forth-coming council meeting. Donna Hall said: "I was delighted to meet Cameron and learn about the fantastic work which he and his fellow pupils have been doing to protect and enhance Wyre which is so inspiring to us all. "We applaud their exceptional efforts and will do eve-rything we can to support the 'Stay Green' campaign and their exciting eco-friendly initiatives across the borough. This complements the good work which we are doing to make Wyre a great place to live which is a key priority for the council and local residents. "We were so impressed with Cameron's enthusiasm, and the positive difference that he had made in his local community, that we have asked him to attend a council meeting with representatives from his school to update all councillors on the outstanding work which is being done in Poulton and how this good practice could be mirrored across the borough." Cameron is also appealing to the residents of Wyre to make little changes to the way they do things to make a big difference to the environment. He wants to share simple tips such as reducing household energy consumption by turning lights and mobile phone chargers off as well as stopping unnecessary junk mail by subscribing to dedicated online services to help people go green. Katherine Parr, Eco School Co-ordinator at Baines High School, said: "Cameron is a wonderful example of how easy it is to go green and make little changes to the way we do things to make a huge difference to our environment. He has worked tremendously hard to make the borough a greener place by working with his fellow students on various initiatives to protect and care for local places and their habitats. "Cameron's eco-conscious efforts are an inspiration to us all and I am very proud of what he has achieved at the school and in the community. We look forward to working with Wyre Borough Council to roll out similar projects across the borough to encourage local peo-ple to look after Wyre."

Finance training pays off for Wyre councillors A training programme that has helped councillors identify more than £1 million of potential savings, has secured a prestigious charter mark for Wyre Borough Council. Having recognised that many councillors had a very basic understanding of local government finance, the council introduced on-going learning to improve the situation. Several years on, those same councillors have been able to make a number of recommendations for budget savings, plus an actual reduction of £790,000 in capital expenditure for 2010/11 - the equivalent of a 1 per cent increase in the band D council tax. The dramatic turnaround has earned the council the prestigious Charter Level 2 in Member Development, an exemplar standard held by less than 10 local au-thorities across the country. Councillor Peter Gibson, Leader of Wyre Borough Council, said: "To achieve the exemplar standard you have to be able to prove that the training given to

councillors has had a measurable im-pact on the com-munity. "We were able to show that because of the training we provide to council-lors at Wyre, we have been able to leave more money in our residents' pockets. "It has made a real impact where it matters and we were able to do it during an economic recession, just when our residents needed it most." To keep costs down, much of the training has been carried out in-house by officers and the Director of Finance and Revenues. One committee chairman who secured a free place on a national course held ses-sions on his return to pass this learning on to col-leagues, while a nationally acclaimed scrutiny course normally held in the Midlands was brought closer to home for the benefit of Lancashire authorities.

Christmas card winner The creative talents of seven-year-old Jack Wardle have earned him an early Christmas present. Jack, a pupil at St Chads's C of E School in Poulton, was the winner of a design-a-Christmas card competition organised by the Wyre Strategic Partnership.

His picture, a colour-ful affair with two snowmen, will be used to send festive greetings to all part-ner organisations. Jack was presented with his prize at a special school as-sembly by the Mayor and Mayoress of Wyre, Councillor Russell and Mrs Christine Forsyth.
