Prospective electrical lineworkers need high school or college algebra, basic computer literacy, and good written and oral communication skills. Good physical condition is necessary for outdoor work in all kinds of weather. Shift work and overtime hours are common. A physical examination, drug screen, and eye examination for CDL permit is required after acceptance into this program. A valid driver’s license is required in order to complete the CDL. Attendance at two courses in the summer semester, Introduction to Climbing and Equipment Operations, is required before students will be allowed to enter the Lineworker program in the fall. The Lineworker program, the only one of its kind in North Dakota, is designed to train skilled apprentice lineworkers at its facility northwest of Mandan. Students receive intense instruction in all facets of power line construction, equipment operation and maintenance, and state-of-the-art technology. Study includes classroom, indoor and outdoor lab work, and courses to prepare for the state commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam. BSC offers a Bachelor of Applied Science in Energy Management (BAS) entirely online. The four-year degree builds on foundations of the AAS degree in Lineworker (Electrical) and adds core management, energy management and general education courses.
