The sound, heat and dust raised by the run up to the Parliament election have not settldown. It leaves hardly any hope for a better administration. Statesmanship has given way crass opportunism and manipulation for personal aggrandizement. God save our country!

Your journal does not carry any political analysis. We have a somewhat heavy stuff on oage, coping, wisdom etc that is immensely valuable. Please try to read and think over thbrilliant piece. The poem by Sugathakumari is one of her best. Suhair has perfected the art discussing serious topics with the aid of anecdotes; I like them and enjoy them. Hope you too. Maitreyis wellness prescription is included because we, the seniors, need constareminders not to give up what little we have adopted for our own health. Alternate therapi

A man and his wife were getting a divorce at a local court, but the custody of their children posedproblem. The mother jumped to her feet and protested to the judge that since she had brought tchildren into this world, she should retain custody of them. The man also wanted custody of his children, so the judge asked for his side of the story. After a long moment of silence, the man rose from his chair and replied: Your Honor, when I put a dointo a vending machine, and a Coke comes out, does the Coke belong to me or to the machine?' The Science of Older and Wiser- PHYLLIS KORK

Since ancient times, the elusive concept of wisdom has figured prominently in philosophical and religiotexts. The question remains compelling: What is wisdom, and how does it play out in individual lives? Mpsychologists agree that if you define wisdom as maintaining positive well-being and kindness in the facechallenges, it is one of the most important qualities one can possess to age successfully and to faphysical decline and death.

Vivian Clayton, a geriatric neuropsychologist in Orinda, Calif., developed a definition of wisdom in the 1970After scouring ancient texts for evocations of wisdom, she found that most people described as wise wedecision makers. So she asked a group of law students, law professors and retired judges to name tcharacteristics of a wise person. Based on an analysis of their answers, she determined that wisdom consisof three key components: cognition, reflection and compassion.

Unfortunately, research shows that cognitive functioning slows as people age. But speed isnt everythingrecent study in Topics in Cognitive Science pointed out that older people have much more information in thbrainsthan younger ones, so retrieving it naturally takes longer. And the quality of the information in the oldbrain is more nuanced. While younger people were faster in tests of cognitive performance, older peopshowed greater sensitivity to fine-grained differences.

It stands to reason that the more information people have in their brains, the more they can detect famipatterns. Elkhonon Goldberg, a neuroscientist in New York says that cognitive templates develop in tolder brain based on pattern recognition, and that these can form the basis for wise behavior and decisions.

According to Dr. Clayton, one must take time to gain insights and perspectives from ones cognitknowledge to be wise (the reflective dimension). Then one can use those insights to understand and hothers (the compassionate dimension).

Working from Dr. Claytons framework, Monika Ardelt, an associate sociology professor at the UniversityFlorida in Gainesville, felt a need to expand on studies of old age because of research showing tsatisfaction late in life consists of things like maintaining physical and mental health, volunteering and havipositive relationships with others. But this isnt always possible if the body breaks down, if social roles a

diminished and if people suffer major losses.Wisdom, she has found, is the ace in the hole that can help even severely impaired people find meanincontentment and acceptance in later life.

She developed a scaleconsisting of 39 questions aimed at measuring three dimensions of wisdoRespondents answered questions about hypothetical challenges and crises, and those who showed evidenof high wisdom were also more likely to have better coping skills. In general, for example, they said th

would be more active than passive about dealing with hardship.

An impediment to wisdom is thinking. I cant stand who I am now because Im not who I used to be, sIsabella S. Bick, a psychotherapist who, at 81, still practices part time out of her home in Sharon, Conn. Shehas aging clients who are upset by a perceived worsening of their looks, their sexual performance, thphysical abilities, their memory. For them, as for herself, an acceptance of aging is necessary for growth, bu

its not a resigned acceptance; its an embracing acceptance, she said.Wise people are able to accept reality as it is, with equanimity, Professor Ardelt said. Her research shothat when people in nursing homes or with a terminal illness score high on her wisdom scale, they also repa greater sense of well-being. If things are really bad, its good to be wise, she said. The Berlin Wisdom Project, a research effort begun in the 1980s that sought to define wisdom by studyancient and modern texts, called it an expert knowledge system concerning the fundamental pragmaticslife. The researchwent on to distinguish between general wisdom, the kind that involves understanding from an observers point of view (for example, as an advice giver), and personal wisdom, which involves deinsight into ones own life.

True personal wisdom involves five elements. They are self-insight; the ability to demonstrate person

growth; self-awareness in terms of your historical era and your family history; understanding that priorities avalues, including your own, are not absolute; and an awareness of lifes ambiguities.

Wisdom in this sense is extremely rare, and research has shown that it actually declines in the final decadeAs a coping strategy, it is better to be positive about life when you are older, she said, and the older peoskew that way. They are more likely to look back on their lives and say that the events that occurred were the best; a wise person would fully acknowledge mistakes and losses, and still try to improve.

True wisdom involves recognizing the negative both within and outside ourselves and trying to learn fromshe said.

Modern definitions of wisdom tend to stress kindness even if its not on the order of Buddha, Gandhi or t

Dalai Lama. Wisdom is characterized by a reduction in self-centeredness, Professor Ardelt said. Wpeople try to understand situations from multiple perspectives, not just their own, and they show tolerance a result.

Theres evidence that people who rank high in neuroticism are unlikely to be wise, said Laura L. Carstensea psychology professor and founding director of the Stanford Center on Longevity in California. They sthings in a self-centered and negative way and so they fail to benefit emotionally from experience, evthough they may be very intelligent.

Professor Carstensen does not consider herself a wisdom researcher because theres a piece of me ththinks its not useful to use a term thats been around for 1,000 years. Some researchers are skeptical abotesting for such an amorphous trait as wisdom.

But Professor Carstensen does study emotional regulation, and says that is a key component of wisdom.

If you are wise, she said, You are not only regulating your emotional state, you are also attending to anothpersons emotional state. She added: You are not focusing so much on what you need and deserve, but

    what you can contribute.

Daniel Goldman, author said, One aspect of wisdom is having a very wide horizon which doesnt center ourselves, or even our group or organization.

He said an important sign of wisdom was generativity. Generativity means giving back without needianything in return. The form of giving back could be creative, social, personal or financial, and the wispeople do that in a way that doesnt see their lifetime as limiting when this might happen.

Dr. Goleman interviewed Erikson, along with his wife, Joan, when both were in their 80s. Eriksons TheoryHuman Development had initially included eight stages, from infancy to old age. When Eriksons themselvthemselves reached old age, though, they found a need to add a ninth stage of development, one in wh

wisdom plays a crucial role. They depict a an old age in which one has enough conviction in ones ocompleteness to ward off the despair that gradual physical disintegration can too easily bring, Dr. Goldm

    wrote.

In the final years of life, Even the simple activities of daily living may present difficulty and conflict. Nwonder, the elders become tired and often depressed. To face down despair with faith and appropria

humility is perhaps the wisest course. One must join the process of adaptation. With whatever tact and

wisdom we can muster, disabilities must be accepted with lightness and humor. Whatever the nature of onelimitations, simplifying ones life is also a sign of wisdom. For example, by giving your things away, while y

are still alive. Some people have trouble with the idea of settling for less. Theyve gotten so used to the gamof acquiring more.Settling for less and simplifying is not the same as giving up. In fact, when older people lack challenges, seabsorption and stagnation may take over. The key is to set the goals that match ones current capacities.

Continuing education can be an important way to cultivate wisdom in the later years, for one thing becausecombats isolation. But the training in practical skills may be less useful for older people than courseshumanities that help people make sense of their lives. Classes in guided autobiography or life review agood ways of strengthening wisdom. In guided autobiography, students write and share their life stories w

the help of a trained instructor.

Dr. Clayton says theres a point in life when a fundamental shift occurs, and people start thinking about homuch time they have left, rather than how long they have lived. Reflecting on the meaning and structure their lives can help people thrive after the balance shifts and there is much less time left than has gobefore. (Garnere

Surrender to the fact that life isnt fair

Afriend of mine, in response to a conversation we were having about the injustices of life, asked me tquestion, Who said life was going to be fair, or that it was even meant to be fair? Her question was

good one. It reminded me of something I was taught as a youngster: Life isnt fair. Its a bummer, but i

absolutely true. Ironically, recognizing this sobering fact can be a very liberating insight.

One of the mistakes many of us make is that we feel sorry for ourselves, or for others, thinking that l

should be fair, or that someday it will be. Its not and it wont. When we make this mistake we tend

spend a lot of time wallowing and/or complaining about whats wrong with life. We commiserate w

others, discussing the injustices of life. Its not fair, we complain, not realizing that, perhaps, it was nev

intended to be. One of the nicethings about surrendering to the fact that life isnt fair is that it keeps

from feeling sorry for ourselves by encouraging us to do the very best we can with what we have. W

know its not lifes job to make everything perfect, its our own challenge. Surrendering to this fact al

keeps us from feeling sorry for others because we are reminded that everyone is dealt a different han

and everyone has unique strengths and challenges. This insight has helped me to deal with the problem

of raising two children, the difficult decisions Ive had to make about who to help and who I cant help,

well as with my own personal struggles during those times that I have felt victimized or unfairly treated

almost always wakes me up to reality and puts me back on track.

The fact that life isnt fair doesnt mean we shouldnt do everything in our power to improve our own liv

or the world as a whole. To the contrary, it suggests that we should. When we dont recognize or adm

that life isnt fair, we tend to feel pity for others and for ourselves. Pity, of course, is a self-defeati

emotion that does nothing for anyone, except to make everyone feel worse than they already do. Wh

we do recognize that life isnt fair, however, we feel compassion for others and for ourselves. A

compassion is a heartfelt emotion that delivers loving-kindness to everyone it touches. The next time y

find yourself thinking about the injustices of the world, try reminding yourself of this very basic fact. Y

may be surprised that it can nudge you out of self-pity and into helpful action.

Such is the way of the world, such is life

There was a small village. A beautiful river was flowing by one of it sides. A young boy living on its shores u

to play in the river bank. One day while he was frolicking in the shallow waters, he heard a harsh, pitiful cry

help.. 'Oh, help me, please save me!"

Looking around, he found a crocodile caught in a net; unable to escape. The boy was however reluctan

save the crocodile knowing the danger of doing it.but the crocodile continued to plead, tears streaming dow

face. "Honestly, I promise you that I won't eat you up. Please save me!"

Reassured by these words, the boy brought a knife and began to cut the net. No sooner was its head free f

the net that the crocodile grabbed the boy's leg.

Now it was the boys turn to cry. Hey, you dirty crocodile! Is this fair?

The crocodile was now relaxed and cool and responded philosophically. What to do? Such is the way of

    world! Such is life!

More than the pain of being eaten by the crocodile, the boy was hurt by its ingratitude. He could not

swallow his philosophy. He looked at the birds sitting on a nearby tree and asked: Is this the way of the wo

full of injustice? And the birds replied: We take such care to build safe nests on the tops of the treesprotecting or eggs. Yet, the snakes come and swallow them. We concur with the crocodile that what it is sa

is true. There is injustice in the world.

Then the boy saw a donkey grazing on the river side and asked this question. The donkey said, ''When I

young, my master loaded dirty linen on my back and extracted maximum amount of work from me. Wh

became old and feeble, he kicked me out. So there is truth in what the crocodile is saying. Such is the wa

    the world.

Finally the boy noticed a rabbit that was hop pin around and repeated his question. The rabbit stro

resented, "No, no - I cannot accept what the crocodile is saying, it is unfair and utter nonsense!" Hearing

the crocodile became angry and started arguing with the rabbit, even while holding the boy's leg in its jaws. rabbit said' I don't understand what you are trying to say and asked to leave the leg and speak. The croco

said, "I am not a fool! If I let go of the leg, the boy will run away." "Now you are really stupid!" said the ra

"Have you forgotten how strong your tail is? Even if he runs you can smash him with one mighty lash of y

tail!" The crocodile fell for this and released the leg. When the boy started to run away, the crocodile tried t

the tail. It realized that only its head had been released, its tail was still caught in the net. The rabbit sm

sweetly and said, "Now, do you understand? Such is the way of the world! Such is life!"

In a short while, the young boy returned with the villagers and they killed the crocodile. The story is not en

here. A dog that came along with the villagers spotted the rabbit and started chasing it. The boy screame

the dog, "Hey listen! This rabbit saved my life. Do not attack it!" But alas, before the boy could intervenedog had chased and killed the rabbit. The boy could not bear this and said to himself, "What the crocodile

was true. Such is the way of the world. Such is life!"

We cannot fully understand everything that governs our lives. We often witness or feel unfairness in this

when we see a small child is run over by a car or a good person suffering from a severe disease. Can

decide ourselves not to be victims of unfairness? Never! But we can do two things. Promote fairness in

dealings in every possible way and not meekly stand by and watch when we have the capacity to

something. But, when we have tried our best and failed, or when the situation is beyond our control, accept

realities of life even if the reality is not to our liking. Remember, such is the world, such is life.

    URINE THERAPY

The practice of drinking ones own urine and massaging the skis repulsive to the average prejudiced mind. However talternate medicine systems do not agree; the colour, taste asmell of urine are not at all offensive and the benefits aastounding. The protagonists maintain that urine contains wate95%, the rest is mainly urea and traces of thousands compounds which should not be termed waste products. Theis always a surplus of hormones and metabolites which do nget absorbed into the blood (the assimilation is based on the oline balance of nutrients and other compounds needed fhealing / nourishment at a particular point of time). Whhappens when one drinks urine is a re-circulation of lifsustaining medicines rejected earlier by the body through t

TIPS ON INVESTMENT IN SHARES- CXXXThe month of March witnessed record rallies on many days. The sensex rose from 20947 o

3rdMarch to a record high of 22340 on 28th. The nifty likewise rose from 6221 to 6696 during the samperiod. When most of the global indices lost values in March, the Indian markets rose heavily. Tonly positive cue for Indian markets was the lower inflation figures for the month of February. In fathe markets were expecting lower values due to the uncertainty of a stable govt. at the centre. Instethe markets got a big rally chasing new highs everyday from 24 thto 28th. In fact this rally is driven nby any improvements in our economy but by huge investments by FIIs. They have invested 2007millions of rupees in March so far. They expects a stable, market friendly Govt. after the elections. N

only that, among emerging markets, they feel Indian markets are better than other markets at preseAnother factor which influenced the FIIs is the substantial reduction in our Current Account DefiThey also expect the economy to grow after elections. The sensex during March went up by 1393 points to reach a record level of 22340 on 28 th. It also keabove 21500, a key support level for a very long time. It has the potential to reach higher levels. Tnext target is 22500. If this rally continues the next higher targets are at 23400 and then 23835. strong close below 20000 is required to make the medium term trend negative. The Nifty also scaled new highs in March. Its value rose from 6221 on 3rdto 6696 on 28th. The Niftyin a long term consolidation phase since Nov. 2010. The range for the Nifty was between 4500 a

6300. Since Nifty has broken these limits, it can move to higher levels. The next targets for nifty a6750, and 6800. Only a strong close below 6300 can make the medium term trend of nifty negative. As for retails investors this the time to book profits since the indices are in an all time high levels. Thcan churn their portfolios now and make it neat. They may track their shares everyday and book profif they have reached the expected level of profit. Even now there are good large capital shares whiare yet to participate in the present rally. They can be purchased now. However since the indices arehigh levels this is not the correct time to buy. One should be very careful as the rally is caused investments by FIIs alone. The present trend is likely to continue till the end of April by which timthe general elections will be over by 50% and a possibility of the next govt whether stable or not wemerge.

Wish all investors lots of profits during the current rally.K
