Hif1l'OY OF THE LINDSAY FAXU.Y

In compiling the folloWing informa tion regarding the History of th Lindsay families from Cootehill, County Cavin, Ireland, and their travels in crossing the Ocean and living in Bytown, tower Canada, and then ving to the Tov11ahip of Kalahide, the County of Blgin in 1841, the details of this research were given to me b:y many branches of the family liVing in the Aylmer district and throughout th State of Michigan and some as far away as the States of Dakota, Washi.ngton, ani California.

There is no doubt that there may be some errora in some of' tL!a dates of this History, but it check-00. very closely vith date.:; on to.mbstones in many cemeteries in Jfalah:i.de Township anJ. in the State of Mi.chigan where they were settled. At the PJ..SEJlt time the fourth a!d fifth generations are grown up and mar:ri, and there

·are hundr1!Jls of descants of these old families •

There were three or four groups commonly referred to as the Lilldsays, Wevells, and Nesbitts.

In setting up this History, the writer felt that all he could do 11a.a to set a basis that the YOU!l8er generations could use. As there are so many groups living today, it would be impossible to go beyond the first and second generation o:f these people.

The writer o:f this note is Fred Lind a, 78 Windermere Crescent, Woodstock, Ontario, Canada, and is the only living grandson of John and Martha Martin LindsS¥. V. G. Lindsay, 'Who was the son o:f Jlartha Martin and John Lindsay, was born in 1840 in Bytovn and was married three times, and the w riter ot this note vas the oldest of the third :family and happened to be 'the only one liVing who remembered mee'ting eome ot the old original sattl rs on the 9th Concession of Jlalahide Township.

L man b7 the name ot John LindsaT waa settled at Coot( hill. He lll&l"ried a girl b7 the naee c4 Jlartha Val.laoe, whr vas born in Aberdeen, SootlaZJd. They were employed u enant laborers of what was k:novn as the Clements' lletate at Cootehill, County CllVin, Irelaad.

They had a family ot 8 children - 4 boys and 4 girls. The boys' names were a Tom Lindsay, John Litldsa;y, James Linda and William Lindsay. The girls' names werea Hanne' Mary Ann, Phebe and Jane Lindsay. 1 of these children were born at Cootehill. It is not known where John Lindst> Sr. originated from. He may have been born in Scotland and crossed to Ireland where he marriod Martha Wallace. It also is not known how many of thei1• 8 children vera married in Ireland. It is known that Tom Linda, the oldest boy, vaa married in Irsland to Catherine Armstrong. and they had 2 girls bom in Ireland.

It is also known that John LiDlsay ll, Jr. born 18o4, vas married in Ireland to Martha Martin. She vas born in Gibraltar in 18o7, a daughter of Samuel Jlartin who was stationed in Gibraltar in the British Lr at that time. The Jlartin family were natives of Dublin, Ireland.

John Lindsay II and Martha Martin had 3 children bort! in Ireland. Their names were Jane Lindsa_y, Marget Lindsay and Charles Lindsay. Jane LiM.say vas born about 1826, Margaret Linda about 1828 and Charles Lindsay, Jr. 1831. Sometime between the birth of Charles Lindsay and their next child, the LiDisaye croesed the ocean in a sail -

boat vi th these children in their arms. They were 6 veeks on the Atlantic Ocean. It is not known tor sure vhere the,; landed but it is believed they landed in Quebec, Canada,

and wt to Bytovn where they lived for 8 years.

Lindsay History Pg. 3

It is known that William Lindsay, vho vas sill8le, crossed first - and alone - and he probably made arrangements for the rest of the family to follov. It is also known that John Lindsay I, then probably getting on in age, aril his vife -Martha Wallace - followed the family, but may not have crossed. at the same time. It is known th at John Linda I va.e very sick on the way and some say that he died on the Ocean. But it is believGd that he survived the trip and died 6 veeks after he arrived in Bytovn ( nov called Ottawa} The vri te:r vas t old that he vas buried in the rock and stone at Bytown, Wld that h..i.. wife - 1-. rt(l. lh:lace - lived for some years and vas still with thE. fu.u.ly ·•hen tl:.:!y arrived in \!a.lahit!-:'l'ctm3hip. !:t han als . ·Jc· -:up:ge Ted that Mar,ha 'b11lace Lindsay i.lt:'"'_st d tha· ·}e f;:.-r.i_ly immigrate to u·ric'l ?I..J. establis}· n: hon:.zs, i :.· :tLC c:: the v - 7 p ·c1.· C1 , 1i -i0 .• u that erit=i.\3d .1.n tbe old. land. After they moved to Mal abide Township, ohe still kept bouse for her son, William, until he married. When she passed away, she was buried in what was known as the Humphrey-Johnson ce meter y. Later this cemetery was abandoned and William Lindsay removed her body and had her buried, the writer was told, in a Church of England cemetery, as the Lindaays belonged to Church of England in the old country. It might be suggested that Trinity Cemetery might have been established by this time, and as the name Trinity is English, the Lind. says had perhaps purchased plots in that cemetery. She may have been buried by her oldest eon, Tom Lindsay.

John Lindsay II and Martha Martin Lindsay were both buried in Trinity. Tom Linda and Catherine ArmstroDB

Lindsay History Pg. 4

vera also buried in Trinity Cemetery, 8th Concession of Malahide Township. William Li ndsay and his wife, Catherine Eaton, were both buried at Aylmer in Aylmer Cemetery.

It is known that Hannah Lindsay was twice married and married her first husband in Irel, whose name was Mr. Ger

and they had 2 children - names were David and Matilda. Bar second husband vas Robert Newell. She vas mc.rried to her second husband, Robert Newell, while she was still in Irela in 1829. The writer believes that the Newell and Lindsay families arrived in Bytown, Lover Cn.nad a, in separate gr-uJ"

It is not known whothor Phbe Lindsay, who mrrjed .T cies .A.rLlStrong, was ma1·x·ied in Ireland or Bytown. It is also not knom vh'lther L'r;:: lin-:1 Lindsay a.-d her h sband, W'ill.1.C'l" Crc:.v;lo ... "C!, \:O:OY married in I.rel and or :Sytown, Lower Canadr... It is k:tQwn that Jane Lindsay married Jae1es Nawell·Jr., a brother to Robert Newell, who was married to Ra·ma.h Linisay, a.'ld th at she was married in Hull, Quebec .. He orossed the river from l3ytown, Lover Canada.

James Lindsay had some ndsunders ·-anding with the family. It is not known ffhether he was married or single, but he left the family in :Sytown and was never heard of afterwaxds although some of the family in 1 ater years tried very hard to trace him.

William Lindsay emained single all the years he lived 1n Lower Canada and was still single when the families moved to Malahide Township. After he arrived in Malahide Township, he married Catherine Eaton, whom it is believed was also from 'Bytown and probably knew Yilliam Lindsay in Lower Canada. Her mother was a widow and married a man by the naine o£ MoM:illen and she was raised by the McMillen family. The McMillen :family moved £rom Lover Canada to

Avon, near Springfield, about the same time as the Lim e families came to Maladhide Township.

In 1840 three members of the families that were living in Bytovn, namelya William Linda, William Nesbitt and James Newell, Jr .. , walked from Bytovn, Laver Canada, to Kalahide Township and took a lot for each member of the family. It is also believed that William Lindsay and James Newell, Jr. returned to Bytovn afoot and that William Nesbitt remained in the d istrict , and that all of the Lindeays and the Newall a and the Crallforde and the krmatrcngs, and two Nesbitt boys, arrived in Malahide Township in the late Spring of 1841 to claim their lets, vhioh they settled on. It is ll1.so known that a man by the name of John Nesbitt, Sr. crossed the Ocean and settled in Bytovn in 1823 and had a family of 14 boys, and it is believed that 2 of these boys - William and Joseph - joined the Lind says and Newalla and came to Jlalahide Township.

It is not known for sure whether Joe Nesbitt was already married to Martha Newell or vhether they were married after they arrived in Kal ahide Township. :But it is known that William Nesbitt was still single and married Betsy Lindsay {daughter of Tom Linde) shortly after the family settled in Mala.hide Township. ./Ul of these families drew lots of 100 acres apiece and got Crown Deeds in the Township of Malahide.. These deeds were not issued until nearly 20 years after they had done certain clearance duties and established themselves in the Community. In the old settlement, John Lindsay had 100 acres of land, Tom Lindsay had 100 acre of land, William Lindsay hc.d 100 acres and Jane Newell Lindsay hrui 1 10 a<-) of land. 'f1lliam Crawford. and hie vife had _probably 50 acres of land, and Jnm o .Ar!¥strong had 50 acres of' l:.md close to Springfield. Hannah Lindsay and her husband, Robert Newell, were unable to got

a lot in the old settlement, and drew a lot at Crampton, north of Springfield. Also William Nesbitt drew a lot of 100 acres. Joe Nesbi tt drew a lot of 100 acres in th-e old settlement in the swamp, but decided not to settle on it, and drew a second lot near the village of the Springfield line where he lived the rest of hie lif e. His wife vas Martha Newell.

While the Lindsaye were still in Bytown living in shantys, they were employed by a man named Filion Wright, a Connec ticut Yankee who walked up the ice on the Ottavll river in the middle of the winter in the year of 1800 en4 rEw.eived from the government 1,000 acres of Timber Limi B on the Hull side of the river across from Bytown. He hired thess Irish fama.lies to cut the logs and pile them up a."tong tht: riv :-. Then each Spring bs ro) led. them intc the river and floated thee to Quebec City where he sold t hem to the Shipping Compa.,ies. This provided permanG ! employment for this wllole family uhere they were loca a"! in Bytown, L ower Canada.

While the LindsRys were still i:!l BytoW<1, it is no t known how many children wer& born there in some familie•,, but John Lindso.y II and his wif e , Martha Martin, had 4 children born in Bytown ( note: 3 previo us cues were born ir. of whiskey through the entire night, at the same time telling her, "Martha, you must not leave me," and the next morning she was better and their worries were over.

The next Spring, 1841, all of the Lindsaye, Newells and Nesbitts, arrived in Malahide Township, coming by boat up the Great Lakes, where they lived the rest of their lives.

John and Martha Lindsay had 4 more children, born in Malahide Townships James Lindsay, born 1842; John Lindsay III, 1844; Samuel Lindsay, 1847, and Robert Senry Lindsay, 1850. JJ.l of them lived and grew up and married. John and Martha·Lindsay did not lose any of their family. John Lindsay died in 1874 and is buried in Trinity Cemetery on the 8th Concession in Malahide Township. His wife, Martha Martin Lindsay, lived 10 years after her husband died. She was a singer· and had a beautiful voice, and did a 1 ot of entertaining among the old families. One o.f the great treats, they said, was to get Aunt Mattie to sing for them all. She was also a friend to all of them and it Wa$ common knowledge that any place she might happen to be was her home, and she could stay as long as she liked. All she had to do was hang up her hat. When she was getting to be quite an old lady and some of her children were married and gone, s he put a pillow on the buckboard of a wagon and rode to Emmett, Michigan w ith her oldest son, and also visited soma of her other children in -that area.
