HOW TO REGISTER  

1.  Please visit the district website at www.sd74.org. 

2.  Click the link “Online Registration” to sign up for classes. 

3.  You will receive a confirmation email within 2 business days of registration.  

4.  Payment may be made on the SD74 Web Store. 

5.  You are not guaranteed a spot in classes until payment is received.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

General Information  

● Classes are 4 days a week (Monday – Thursday)   

● Location:  Todd Hall School, 3925 W. Lunt Ave., Lincolnwood, IL 60712  

● Parents are responsible for transportation to and from summer school. No buses.  

● Students are enrolled in classes based on their grade level for the 2017-18 SY.  ● Program is open to all students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade.  ● Each class is 55 minutes long. Students may enroll in up to 4 classes.  ● Tuition is $90 per class. Some classes may have additional material fees. 

 ● Families have until July 14th to withdraw from summer school and receive a full 

refund.   

● After July 14th, tuition is non-refundable except for the following reasons: a class is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or exclusion from a class due to class limit being met.   

● There are no refunds for natural disasters or inclement weather that may interfere with the operation of summer school classes.  

● There is no reduced price or prorated rate for missed days/weeks.

Getting Ready for Kindergarten Grades: K Teacher: Dena Swidler In Getting Ready For Kindergarten, kids will get a taste for what it is like in Kindergarten at Todd Hall.  We will explore numbers, letters, calendar, and playing with others.  We will focus on early number sense (number recognition, patterns, simple addition) and letter names and sounds.  We will work on handwriting and beginning reading skills. 

 Fairy Tale Fun Grades: K-2 Teacher: Kelly Tokarski Fairy Tales, Fables, and Fantasy are an important part of our storytelling history. Listen to different versions of the same tale, discuss the moral and lessons learned, work from writing prompts to create your own ending and/or expand on the story. Participate in arts and crafts projects that wrap up our weekly theme! 

 P.L.A.Y. (Purposeful Learning and Youth) Grades: K-2  Teacher: Lyna Swanson Children will be playing at learning centers in the classroom where they will experience activities in math, reading, science, and art. Each center is designed to engage children in meaningful discoveries that match their individual interests. 

 1st Grade Reading Booster Grades: 1 Teacher: Robin Altschul This class is for struggling 1st grade readers who will benefit from direct instruction in phonics, fluency and comprehension. This class uses scientifically-based reading materials and strategies to teach good reading habits and tools to students. Learning games and technology will be incorporated in this one hour class. 

 Mo Willems Book Madness Grades: 1-2 Teacher: Angela Howard Pigeon presents…Books by Mo Willems! Have you ever read the Pigeon books, Elephant and Piggy stories, or Knuffle Bunny? We will have fun with all these silly book characters. This class is perfect for those that love reading, writing, acting, drawing, and making crafts. 

 

 

 

 Awesome Gym Games Grades: 1-3 Teacher: Dave Tesnow This class will incorporate games of tag and relay (lines and circle). Activities include steal the bacon, wonderball, crows and cranes, and midnight to name a few. Scooters, ropes, bowling pins, and other equipment will be used in a friendly non-competitive environment. 

 Math Madness Grades: 1-3 Teacher: Krissy Cardo Shake, rattle and roll… If you love math or need a boost, you should sign up for Math Madness! We will practice skills and learn new math websites. Children will play fun card games, board games and computer games. We will bring math problems to life on KidPix as we write, illustrate, and animate MATH. 

 2nd Grade Superstars Readers & Writers Grades: 2 Teacher: Deana Youkhana Students will practice essential reading skills such as grade level phonics, sight words, comprehension, & fluency through various fun, hands-on activities that support all learning types. Activities will challenge students and reinforce important reading skills needed at grade level. Writing will be incorporated in daily activities. This class is taught by a certified Reading Specialist. 

 Magic Tree House Adventures Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Allison Peck If you enjoy exploring and adventures, then this is the class for you! Join Jack and Annie while they explore history, science, and math from their magic tree house. We will learn about places like Egypt, China, and the rainforest. We will follow Jack and Annie as they study earthquakes, tornadoes, and even participate in the Olympics! 

 Game Show Mania Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Taylor Hogan Have you ever wanted to be on a gameshow? If so, this is the class for you! We will play games like Minute to Win it, Jeopardy, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, The Amazing Race, and so much more.

Grades: 3 Teacher: Liz Golden Let's get ready for third grade! We'll review second grade standards and practice math and reading skills for the upcoming school year. 

 Math and Movement Grades: 3-4 Teacher: Brendan Ryan Students will explore the impact that physical activity has on their academic performance. An enormous amount of research shows that physical activity improves brain function. Students will perform grade level appropriate academic work, play a physical education game, and then perform similar academic work. The positive impact on their academics will then be assessed and explored. 

 Reading/Writing for Intermediate Grades – *See requirement for book below* Grades: 4-5 Teacher: Natalie Nikolic In this course, we will be reading Lois Lowry's realistic fiction work "Number of the Stars". Please have this book for the first day of class. We will learn strategies for reading both fiction and non-fiction works, and build vocabulary to improve both understanding of written material and writing skills. In writing, we will use Six Traits of Writing to help students improve their writing skills. 

 Passport to the World Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Lori McGreal Hola! Ni Hao! Hello! Pack your bags and grab your passports! Come with me as we vacation in destinations around the world. Through meaningful, hands-on activities and technology, we will experience the culture, language, games, and music of each country. If you like to eat with chopsticks, hit a piñata, and celebrate culture, this is the vacation for you! 

 Sew Fun Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Maria Ricotta Students will learn basic sewing skills that will enable them to create their very own stuffed animal to bring home at the end of the summer. 

     

 

 

 

EmPower Yoga - *Bring your own mat!* Grades: 4-7  Teacher: Anne Obringer Kids rule, negativity drools! Start your day feeling energized and empowered with yoga. We will work on controlled breathing, power poses, and creative flows while simultaneously improving our health, well-being, and positivity. BYO mat. You’ll want to namas TAKE this class! 

 Sports and Games Grades: 4-8 Teacher: Eric Baumann This class will offer a variety of sports and fun gym games. Sports will include: soccer, basketball, and floor hockey. Students will enjoy skill development and exciting introductory games. Teamwork and sportsmanship will be emphasized. 

 Art All Around Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Maureen Engel Create works of art using various materials and inspirations. Students will dabble in art by looking at the works of great artists and the world around them. Student will explore art through various means by becoming motivated by other works of art, everyday objects and tasks, and by nature. 

 Reading Reboot (Intervention) Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Patrick Huett This intervention class will help prepare your child for the next school year with reading strategies and tools. This class is meant to catch students up (intervention), not for enrichment. This class is meant only for students who are struggling and not yet at grade level.

 Gym Jam Grades: K-3 Teacher: Eric Baumann The main purpose of this class is to introduce students to a variety of lead -up sport games and enhance gross motor skills. The games include wiffleball, kickball, basketball, floor hockey, along with running, dodging, starting, and stopping activities. The atmosphere is friendly and non-competitive. 

 All Day I Dream About Disney Grades: K-3 Teacher: Taylor Hogan If you love all things Disney, this is the class for you. We will read Disney books, create fun crafts, and play Disney themed games.

Books Galore! Grades: 1-2 Teacher: Angela Howard What's your favorite book? Come explore your favorite children's books through crafts, games, songs and other fun activities! Get ready to celebrate your favorite books with a reading celebration at the end of the summer! 

 Getting Ready for Second Grade Grades: 2 Teacher: Krissy Cardo Let’s get ready for second grade!!! We will practice math, reading, and writing skills in preparation for the new school year.

 Oodles of Ocean Fun Grades: 2-3 Teacher: Allison Peck Fish, and dolphins, and sharks, oh my! Are you interested in learning more about the ocean, conducting science experiments, and creating crafts? Then this class is for you! We will discover the ocean’s plants and animals using books, iPads, and the computers. Take the bait and join us for what is sure to be an o-fish-ally good time! 

 Digital Storytelling Grades: 3-4 Teacher: Liz Golden Come write and use technology to publish stories this summer! In this class students will write fiction and nonfiction stories. They will then use a variety of apps and websites to bring these stories to life. 

 Writers Workshop Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Lyna Swanson This workshop is designed to develop and expand individual writing skills. Literature will be read daily to provide opportunities for students to hear what good writing 

 

 

 

sounds like. The Six Traits of Writing will be used to help students understand the foundation of what makes writing work. Students will publish a book at the end of the class. 

 Getting Ready for 4th Grade Grades: 4 Teacher: Natalie Nikolic This class is will help students jumpstart their math skills so they may be more successful in fourth grade. Common Core curriculum and Every Day Math may be challenging for some students. We will use the topics and strategies taught in Every Day Math to help students prepare. In addition, we will work on addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts so that students can become more fluent mathematicians. 

 Sew Fun! Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Maria Ricotta Students will learn basic sewing skills in order to make a stuffed animal. 

 Battle of the Books! Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Lori McGreal Each year, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at Lincoln Hall can participate in the Battle of the Books. This summer 4th, 5th and 6th grade students can, too! We will read books nominated for the 2017-18 Rebecca Caudill award (http://www.rebeccacaudill.org/2018-list). Mock Battles will be held to prep you for the real thing! All levels of readers welcome. 

 Photography Club - *Bring your own camera!* Grades: 4-7 Teacher: Anne Obringer Is your photo stream full of great memories? Are you tired of taking awkward pictures of your family or pets? Looking to finally master the perfect selfie? Interested in using pictures to tell a story? Take your shutterbug skills up a level by becoming a professional photographer this summer! BYO camera, and learn about framing, composition, and editing your photos so that every shot is picture perfect.

 Essential Skills for 6th Grade Math Grades: 5-7 Teacher: Andrew Almer This class will focus on common core standards addressed in 5th and 6th grade math. It is geared towards incoming 6th grade math students who want to prepare ahead for sixth grade math and for outgoing 6th graders who need to brush up on 6th grade math skills in preparation for 7th grade. 

 Sports and Games Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Dave Tesnow This class will offer a variety of sports and fun gym games. Sports will include; soccer, basketball and floor hockey. Students will enjoy skill development and exciting introductory games. Teamwork and sportsmanship will be emphasized. 

 Using STEAM Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Maureen Engel Explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math through hands on activities powered by youth. Get your engines revving because students will use their brains to explore, create, design, and test projects that will keep them thinking and moving. 

 Fraction Attraction-Fraction Focus (Intervention) Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Patrick Huett This hands-on exploratory math class will focus on place value of fractions and problem solving with fractions. There will also be a focus on real world application of problem solving. This class is meant to catch students up (intervention), not for enrichment. This class is meant only for students who are struggling and not yet at grade level.

Habitats Grades: K-2 Teacher: Dena Swidler In this class we will explore the different habitats and the animals that live there. We will read books, do research and watch Ms. Frizzle and her friends with the Magic School Bus to explore the weather, landforms and other exciting aspects about each habitat. 

 Fly Guy Fanatics Grades: K-3 Teacher: Krissy Cardo BUZZZZ!!!! Do you love Fly Guy? Come see the world through the eyes of FLYZZZ! Read, write & research the topics of the Fly Guy series. On iPads and computers we will dive into Fly Guy’s adventures: Firefighters, Insects, Dinosaurs, Sharks, and Space! This class is perfect for those who want to keep reading, writing, crafting, and exploring through summer. 

 Sports of All Sorts Grades: K-3 Teacher: Dave Tesnow Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of team sports in a low key non-competitive atmosphere. We will focus on the skills needed to become proficient in each sport. The sports include basketball, floor hockey, touch football, kickball, softball, volleyball, soccer. 

 1st Grade Readiness Grades: 1 Teacher: Angela Howard Let’s get ready for 1st grade! This course will prepare students for 1st grade in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Students will practice a variety of skills through games, activities, and technology integration. 

 Cinderella Around the World Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Sheryl Greenstein The story of Cinderella is one of our most beloved fairy tales being told and retold in many cultures the world over. We will leave Lincolnwood behind and travel with Cinderella around the world. Each day we will read a version of the story, learn about 

 

 

 

the country and compare the plot and characters to the other versions.  

American Girls Galore Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Allison Peck Do you like the American Girl dolls? Bring your doll and come join us to learn more about the history and themes from the American Girls. We will read books, study the different historical periods, and explore themes, like friendship and expressing oneself. 

 Fun with Computers Grades: 2-4 Teacher: Liz Golden Students will explore keyboarding, coding, and learning based websites to help reinforce skills. Come have fun with computers! 

 Rockin’ Reading Book Club Grades: 3-4 Teacher: Deana Youkhana Students will explore and form book club groups that will read and discuss new and old classic grade level appropriate books of different genres. Students will focus on specific reading skills of various concepts through extension activities related to their book choices. Students will share personal ratings of books chosen with classmates. This class is taught by a certified Reading Specialist. 

 Eat and Run Grades: 3-5 Teacher: Lyna Swanson Do you like being active? Maybe you like to stay healthy while doing fun activities, then this could be the class for you! Some of the activities include: capture the flag, kickball, soccer and many more! We will also learn how to make healthy snacks to fuel our bodies to keep us active throughout the day. Wear gym shoes! 

 Trinket Box Art Club Grades: 3-7 Teacher: Halyna Yanchuk Let’s get crafty and create our sweet salvage treasures. Get your hands dirty in glue, ink, paint and glitter creating handmade jewelry and small accessories. We’ll explore various jewelry making techniques and fill our treasure boxes with some bling! 

  

 

 

 

Authors, Books, and Crafts Grades: Lori McGreal Teacher: 4-6 Come spend time with your favorite author! We will take a look at famous authors and the books they have written. We will spend time re-creating artwork (and scenes!) to represent their stories and characters. If you love Greg from Wimpy Kid, Nikki from Dork Diaries, Emily from Amulet or Raina from Smile or Sisters, this is the class for you! 

 Summer Olympics Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Taylor Hogan Students will learn about the history of the Olympics, create Olympics themed crafts, and participate in team building to prepare for their own Olympic Games. 

 Reading Club  Grades: 4-7 Teacher: Anne Obringer Reading is FUN, and if you have assigned summer reading, you can also get it DONE! This class is like a book club, where everyone can read and discuss together in a social classroom environment. You will read, you will discuss, and you will do many fun reading activities with your friends. In this class, summer reading is awesome! 

 Healthy Living Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Maureen Engel Balancing the mind and body, this class will present techniques to create a more positive you. Students will learn how to nurture and respect their minds and bodies through challenging puzzles and through exercise and food. 

 Soccer and Basketball Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Eric Baumann Students will learn and practice the various skills for soccer and basketball in a fun and exciting setting. These skills will eventually be applied to real game play with sportsmanship and teamwork as an emphasis. 

 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Maria Ricotta Students will learn basic kitchen preparation and cooking skills while making quick, 

 

 

 

easy, and delicious recipes.  

Math Enrichment for 6th – 7th Graders Grades: 6-7 Teacher: Andrew Almer Students will explore 6th and 7th grade math concepts through project based learning. While skills will be reviewed, the emphasis of this class is more on exploring concepts in 6th and 7th grade math by completing real world projects. 

 Pre-Algebra Grades: 7-8 Teacher: Natalie Nikolic Students will work on both Algebraic and geometric skills to help prepare them and be more successful in math the upcoming year.

 Book Club – Novel Study (Intervention) Grades: 7-8 Teacher: Patrick Huett This class will explore a novel or two (depending on time) with a focus on strategies to unpack a novel. Student participants will dive deeper into the novel by analyzing literary elements and students will lead discussions with teacher guidance. This class is meant to catch students up (intervention), not for enrichment. This class is meant only for students who are struggling and not yet at grade level.

Sensational Seuss Reading Fun & Games Grades: K-1 Teacher: Deana Youkhana Students will think they have stepped into a real life Seuss book by listening and reading some of Seuss' famous books. Each day we will focus on one of his great books and participate in cross-curricular extension activities that reinforce essential grade level skills. We will read classics to unfamiliar books. This class is taught by a certified Reading Specialist. 

 Soccer and Basketball Grades: K-3 Teacher: Eric Baumann Students will learn and practice the various skills for soccer and basketball in a fun and exciting setting. These skills will eventually be applied to real game play with sportsmanship and teamwork as an emphasis. 

 Environmentally Conscious Grades: K-3 Teacher: Maureen Engel Become an expert of earth by finding ways you can help save the planet. This class will teach students about the earth and all its glory. Students will learn about the different gifts which earth provides, develop ways to preserve these things, and gain a deeper respect for all that earth has to offer. 

 Lego City Grades: 1-3 Teacher: Taylor Hogan Do you love Legos? Join this class to read Lego City books, build famous landmarks, and complete daily challenges using Legos. 

 EcoARTs Grades: 2-6 Teacher: Halyna Yanchuk Do you have any old T-shirts? Don't throw them away! Join us for an art and crafts class where we get to use our hands and imagination to repurpose and upcycle old T-shirts, plastic and more. 

   

 

 

 

Performance Theatre Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Sheryl Greenstein You may not end up on Broadway, but you will be performing in Lincolnwood. During this class, the students will have the opportunity to develop acting skills and self confidence while participating in theatre games and activities. They will learn about theatre "behind the scenes" while creating and participating in an end of session production. 

 Yoga Exploration Grades: 4-6 Teacher: Lori McGreal Yoga isn’t just for adults! In a world of fast paced technology, hectic schedules, and outside pressures, take some time to learn the amazing lifelong practice of yoga. The class will explore a variety of yoga styles and build strength, balance, and flexibility. We will go beyond the physical practice of yoga to cover breathing techniques, relaxation, and Mindfulness. 

 Globetrotters Grades: 4-7 Teacher: Anne Obringer Do you love to go on trips to exotic places? Have you ever wanted to see a different country, but lacked an opportunity? Do you love learning about different cultures from around the world? In this class, you can travel the globe without leaving town! Each week, we will explore a different country’s culture, landmarks, and food. 

 Quick, Easy, and Delicious Grades: 5-8 Teacher: Maria Ricotta Students will learn basic kitchen preparation and cooking skills while making quick, easy, and delicious recipes. 

    

Getting Ready for 6th Grade Grades: 6 Teacher: Natalie Nikolic Students will take an assessment of skills in order to see topics that may need to be reviewed and/or taught to help them be more successful in sixth grade.

Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Lyna Swanson Do you like being active? Maybe you like to stay healthy while doing fun activities, then this could be the class for you! Some of the activities include: capture the flag, kickball, soccer and many more! We will also learn how to make healthy snacks to fuel our bodies to keep us active throughout the day. Wear gym shoes! 

 Basketball/Soccer Grades: 6-8 Teacher: Dave Tesnow This class will enable students to refine their skills in both sports through drill and game activity. Each sport will run for 2 ½ weeks each. Our focus is to build strength, endurance, coordination, and flexibility. Students will better understand the rules and concepts through team play. The atmosphere will be fun and friendly. 

 Getting Ready for Algebra Grades: 7-8 Teacher: Andrew Almer This class is designed for students who will be taking Algebra in the fall. We will review important Pre-Algebra concepts before getting into some of the foundations of Algebra.
