Mission StatementThe mission of the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at Lin-

coln University shall be to provide National Collegiate Athletics Asso-ciation (NCAA) Division II programs for men and women that are equally characterized by excellence. The primary philosophy of the Department of Athletics is that our staff and program develop and hold the concept of the student-athlete at the highest level of signifi-cance. This important standard must be encouraged and supported and never compromised, thus emphasizing to the student-athlete the importance of not only obtaining a degree, but also in reaching full academic and athletic potential.

The Intercollegiate Athletic program shall reflect due regard for the athletic traditions of Lincoln University, as well as future promise. The program shall fall within Lincoln’s abilities to provide appropriate facili-ties, along with the location, allows Lincoln to schedule conveniently and competitively and fall within financial capabilities of Lincoln Uni-versity to fund adequately. The goal of the Department of Athletics is consistent with the core mission of the university: to provide excel-lent educational opportunities for a diverse student population. Our student-athletes will be viewed as students first, and only then as athletes. The department will focus on producing graduates who are successful, well-rounded and prepared to make positive contributions to society.

Academic achievement in the classroom, together with the devel-opment of character, individual and team skills, the will to win and a sense of fair play and sportsmanship in athletic competition deter-mines distinction in intercollegiate athletics programs. Such distinc-tion is a source of pride and enthusiasm for Lincoln University, among its constituent groups including students, faculty and staff, alumni, community and friends at all levels of interest.

The Department of Athletics will strive to be a leader in areas of ethics, non-discrimination, diversity and authentic fiscal integrity throughout the Lincoln University campus, the state of Missouri and the country. At the same time, student-athletes must be given the greatest opportunity possible to strive for the highest athletic standards through the best preparation, motivation and support.

Nicole Collier begins her second season as the head coach of the Lincoln women’s basketball team in 2013-14.

In her first year on the job, Collier led the team to 11 wins and its second-consecutive berth in the MIAA Women’s Basketball Championship tourna-ment. The season was highlighted by an appearance on the MIAA Net-work, where Lincoln defeated a Northeastern State team that was receiving votes in the national coaches poll, 54-49. The RiverHawks averaged the fewest turnovers per game in NCAA Division II entering that game, but Collier’s squad forced 25 takeaways with 17 steals.

Under Collier’s guidance, two Blue Tigers earned All-MIAA recognition, including third team selection Arriana Walker, who became the first Lincoln player to lead the conference in steals in back-to-back seasons. The other was Freddie Sims, who became the second player in program history to be named All-MIAA honorable mention.

Collier spent three seasons as Lincoln’s assistant coach before being elevated to the head coaching position beginning in 2012-13. Over the past four years, Collier has helped Lincoln transition from playing in the Heart-land Conference to playing in the MIAA. After posting a 2-24 overall record, including a 1-21 league mark, in the Blue Tigers’ first season back in the MIAA (2010-11), Collier helped guide Lincoln to 15-13 mark last season and an 83-77 win over No. 12 Pittsburg State in the first round of the con-ference tournament.

The 15 wins tied for the second-most in program history. Additionally, Lincoln won eight MIAA games, the most league wins in a season ever by a Blue Tiger team.

With Collier as an assistant coach, the Blue Tigers have posted 12 or more wins in two of the past three years. Last season Lincoln defeated two na-tionally-ranked teams, including beating Pittsburg State for the first post-season win in program history. A vital part of Lincoln’s recruiting process, Collier has helped develop a team that was an eight-point loss away (to Emporia State, 68-60) from playing for a berth in the NCAA tournament in the MIAA Championship game.

Two of the players coached by Collier earned All-MIAA honors follow-ing the 2011-12 campaign, including Vivian Essuon, who was the only playing in the league to finish in the top five in both scoring and re-bounding. Essuon was an All-MIAA First Team honoree while Arriana Walker earned All-Defensive Team and Honorable Mention awards.

Collier joined the Blue Tigers in 2009 after serving as an assistant with Central Missouri from 2004-2009. At UCM, working with head coach Dave Slifer, Collier helped lead the Jennies to two NCAA Re-gional appearances, five straight seasons of 14 or more victories and three winning seasons. The Jennies defeated five nationally ranked opponents in that span and made the MIAA tournament field each season.

Collier’s experience with the program and the progress the team has made over the past three seasons were key factors in her hiring. She also brings to the leadership role a wealth of experience in the MIAA. In addition to serving as an assistant at Central Missouri and Lincoln, Collier spent two seasons playing at Missouri Western before gradu-ating in 2003.

She was an All-Region and All-Conference player with the Griffons, ultimately leading Missouri Western a No. 1 national ranking during each season. During the 2001-02 season, she led MWSU to an MIAA title and for 2002-03 she served as a team captain.

Prior to transferring to Missouri Western, Collier began her collegiate career playing at Jefferson College where, as a freshman, she led the program to its first-ever berth in the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament. She then led the team back to the tourna-ment as a sophomore, guiding Jefferson to a third-place finish. Collier was a two-time All-American at Jefferson and, in 2009, was the first athlete inducted into the Jefferson College Hall of Fame.

Collier has an undergraduate degree in physical education and a master’s in exercise science and sport administration. She and her husband, Terry, currently reside in Holts Summit with their daughter, Reese.

Alex Wiggs

Assistant Coach1st Season at LU

1st Season Overall

Alex Wiggs joined the Lincoln women’s basketball team as an assistant coach be-ginning with the 2013-14 season. Wiggs spent the past three years as an assistant coach at Moberly Area Community College. He was most recently a member of the Greyhounds’ women’s basketball staff, where he helped the team compile a two-year record of 40-22 after the program had gone 7-24 the previous year. Wiggs helped the team break a 32-year record for scoring defense in 2013, as the Greyhounds gave up just 48.5 points per game.

In 2013, the Greyhounds ranked 15th nationally in opponents field goal per-centage (.331), 24th in steals (12.6 per game) and 34th in blocked shots (3.7 per game). Thanks to that impressive defense, MACC went 14-1 at home during the 2012-13 season and appeared in the National Junior College Athletic Association Top 25 poll for the first time since 2009.

Four players coached by Wiggs over the past two season earned NJCAA All-Region 16 honors while two more were honorable mention selections. Wiggs coached 13 players who later signed with four-year colleges, the most a coach has had in his or her first two years in program history. Wiggs helped MACC achieve finishes of third and second in the NJCAA Region 16 and coached two players who joined NCAA Division I rosters.

Wiggs assisted in organizing and scheduling travel, recruiting, strength and conditioning training and scouting as well as providing players with individual instruction. In addition to helping with game strategy and being an on-floor coach, Wiggs oversaw the team’s academic progress and, over the past two years, helped 18 student athletes earn cumulative grade point averages of 3.0 or higher; nine student athletes earn a spot on the Dean’s List with 3.5 or better averages; and six student athletes selected to the President’s List with perfect 4.0 grade point averages.

Before taking over as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Moberly, Wiggs served on the Greyhounds’ men’s basketball staff from August 2010-July 2011. Wiggs helped plan game strategy, scouted opponents and worked as a recruiter for the Greyhounds in addition to his work as an on-floor coach. Wiggs coached two all-region honorees during his lone season with the team and led the Grey-hounds to the NJCAA Region 16 semifinals.

Wiggs graduated from John Brown University in 2010 and earned a master’s degree in 2012.

VivianEssuon

Graduate Assistant2nd Season at LU

Vivian Essuon is in her second season as a graduate assistant with the Lincoln women’s basketball team after a stellar two-year career as a member of the Blue Tigers. In her first year as an assistant, Essuon helped guide the Blue Tigers to a second-consecutive MIAA Championship Tour-nament berth.

As a senior, Essuon led Lincoln to its first postseason victory in program history, helping LU defeat Pittsburg State, 83-77, in the first round of the MIAA Championship. It was a fitting conclusion for Essuon, who was the only player in the MIAA to finish the 2011-12 campaign ranked in the top five in both scoring and rebounding. With 9.4 boards per game, Es-suon became the fifth player in Lincoln history to lead the MIAA in total rebounding.

In 2011-12, Essuon tallied a league-high 12 double-doubles, including a 20-point, 23-rebound performance against Missouri Western. the first 20-20 game in the MIAA in nearly three years. Essuon scored at least 10 points in 22 games, hitting the 20-point mark on six occasions. Her sea-son performance earned her a spot on the All-MIAA First Team, making her the third Blue Tiger (Beverly Scott, 1982-83, and Pam Pringle, 1985-86) to earn that honor.

Her senior campaign followed an equally strong junior season in which Essuon averaged a double-double a game (16.4 points, 10.2 rebounds). She led Lincoln in field goal percentage (.540), offensive boards (118), defensive rebounds (147) and blocks (25) and finished third on the team with 27 steals. Playing in the league for the first time following a 21-year hiatus, Essuon was named to the All-MIAA second team, becoming the first Blue Tiger to earn All-MIAA honors since the 1985-86 campaign.

Prior to coming to Lincoln, Essuon played two seasons at Mineral Area Community College, earning the school’s Rookie of the Year award in 2009. She also received the Coaches Award during both her seasons and, as a sophomore, made over 50-percent of her shot attempts from the field. Originally from Brampton, Ontario, Essuon played high school ball at St. Marguerite D’Youville, where she had a career average of 12 points and eight rebounds per game.

FreddieSims

Graduate Assistant1st Season at LU

Freddie Sims begins her first season as a graduate assistant at Lincoln af-ter helping lead the Blue Tigers to back-to-back postseason appearances in two seasons as a player.

An All-MIAA honorable mention in 2012-13, Sims helped Lincoln to two consecutive 11-win seasons, marking the first time the Blue Tigers had won that many games in back-to-back years since 2002-03 and 2003-04. Sims was also a part of a group of seniors that led Lincoln to consecutive appearances in the MIAA Women’s Basketball Championship tourna-ment, including a run in 2011-12 that featured a first round win over No. 12 Pittsburg State and ended with an eight-point loss in the tourney semi-finals.

Sims, who was third in the league in minutes played (33.5) in 2012-13, was also a prolific scorer for Lincoln last season, finishing 10th in the MIAA with 13.2 points per game. Sims scored at least 10 points in 19 of LU’s 26 regular season contests, including opening the season with 12 consecutive 10-point games. Among her most notable performances were a 22-point day in a road win over Lindenwood, a 20-point effort in a victory over Quincy and a 12-point game in a televised home win over Northeastern State.

One of the top long-range shooters in the MIAA, Sims finished last year 13th in the league in made-treys (1.6) and 15th in three-point percent-age (.368). She was also one of the conference’s best free throw shooters, making 79.3% of her attempts, the eighth-best percentage in the league.

Sims was also a key part of the 2011-12 team’s postseason run, playing in all 28 games with 26 starts. Sims finished that year third on the team with 11.1 points per game and also tallied 77 rebounds, 34 assists and 22 steals. Sims was the most prolific long-range shooter on the team, making 47 of 116 attempts for a percentage of .405, the sixth-best in the MIAA. Sims also ended the year 20th in the league in scoring, 10th in three-pointers made (1.7) and sixth in minutes played (32.3).

A member of the Lincoln staff since May of 2011, Scott Armstrong su-pervises the Blue Tigers' athletic training program, directing health care for all 11 of Lincoln's NCAA Division II teams. Armstrong designs and implements rehabilitiation protocols in the case of any injury and also oversees management of Lincoln's sports medicine department.

Armstrong was named the head athletic director after a successful ca-reer working with several professional football programs, most recently the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. As an assistant ath-letic trainer, Armstrong directed the treatment and rehab of the team's injured players, working with physicians, coaches and team officials to ensure the health and safety of all of the team's athletes.

Prior to his work with the Tuskers, Armstrong has worked on the train-ing staffs of the Washington Redskins (2009-2010), Tennessee Titans (2007-08 training camps and preseasons) and the Austin Wranglers of

the Arena Football League (2005-2006).

Armstrong initially broke into collegiate athletic training at North Carolina State, where he served as a graduate assistant trainer from August of 2006 through May of 2009. Armstrong was the assigned trainer for the Wolf-pack's wrestling, men's & women's soccer and women's gymnastics teams while also working with the cheer squad.

A licensed athletic trainer in three states, Armstrong also has received certifications from the NATABOC, the American Red Cross and the National Academy of Sports Medicine. He earned a Bachelors of Exercise and Sports Science degree from Texas State University and a Master's of Education degree with a concentration in Exercise Physiology from the University of Houston.

Betty Kemna - Athletic Director Betty Kemna became Lincoln’s Director of Athletics on July 1, 2009, after serving

as Assistant Athletic Director of Compliance for four years. She has implemented several internal changes within the athletics program since being appointed to the position. A corporate sponsorship program has been developed and implemented, along with the Blue Tiger Club booster program and the Blue Tiger Kids' Club.

Kemna is no stranger to Lincoln University, as her first position on campus was Head Softball Coach/Concession Coordinator when she was hired in 1997. In 1999, she took on additional duties as Senior Women’s Administrator within the athletic department. In 2003, she took over as NCAA Compliance Coordinator.

Under her direction the compliance department took the institution through a five-year probation period that Lincoln was on for violations prior to her appoint-ment. In 2005, she was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance.

During the 2007-2008 academic year she served as Interim Athletic Director, while still conducting her duties as Assistant AD for Compliance.

Kemna is a 1996 graduate of Lincoln University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Education. She earned a master's in education from William Woods University in 2006.

Kemna and her husband, Scott, have three children, Bradley, Erin and Cole.

Lincoln UniversityHistory of Lincoln UniversityAt the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution in Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. The following stipulations were set for the school:

1. The institution shall be designed for the special benefit of the freed African-Americans;2. It shall be located in the state of Missouri;3. Its fundamental idea shall be to combine study and labor.

Members of the 62nd Colored Infantry contributed $5,000; this was supplemented by approximately $1,400, given by the 65th Colored Infantry. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was for-mally established under an organization committee. By June of the same year, it incorporated and the committee became a Board of Trustees. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant in the 62nd Infantry, was named first principal of Lincoln Institute. On Septem-ber 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class in an old frame building in Jefferson City.

In 1869, Lincoln Institute moved to the present campus, and in 1870 it began to receive aid from the state of Missouri for teacher training. College-level work was added to the curriculum in 1877, and passage of the Normal School Law permitted Lincoln gradu-ates to teach for life in Missouri without further examination. Lincoln Institute formally became a state institution in 1879 with the deeding of the property to the state. Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Lincoln became a land grant institution, and the fol-lowing year industrial and agricultural courses were added to the curriculum.

In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill introduced by Walthall M. Moore, the first black American to serve in that body, which changed the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln Univer-sity and created a Board of Curators to govern the University.

The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited the high school division in 1925, the teacher-training program in 1926, and the four-year college of arts and sciences in 1934. Graduate instruction was begun in the summer session of 1940, with majors in education and history and minors in English, history, and sociology. A School of Journalism was established in February 1942.

In 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, and Lincoln University responded by opening its doors to all applicably meeting its entrance criteria. Today, Lincoln University serves a diverse clientele, both residential and non-residential, engages in a variety of research projects, and offers numerous public service programs in addition to providing an array of academic programs.

The most successful women’s basket-ball coach in Blue Tiger history, Lewis led Lincoln to six double-digit win seasons in the early 1980s including a program-best 16 wins in 1984-85. Lewis finished his coaching career with 104 career victories.

Lewis was better known for his legendary play as a member of the LU football team, as he helped the Blue Tigers win 27 games and post back-to-back undefeated seasons in the early 1950’s. Lewis, who owns four of Lincoln’s top seven single-season rushing marks, carried the ball 623 times for 4,457 yards and 64 touchdowns during his four-year LU career, with all three of those marks still standing as program records. Nicknamed “The Lincoln Locomotive,” Lewis played for Lincoln from 1951-1954, rush-ing for over 1,100 yards three times and finishing with 384 career points. Lewis scored four touchdowns in a game on four occasions, making him the only Blue Tiger to ever accomplish that feat multiple times, and set a program record with 22 touchdowns in the 1953 campaign.

From 1951-1954, Lincoln posted four consecutive winning seasons, including posting identical 8-0-1 records during the 1952 and 1953 campaigns. In 1952, Lincoln outscored opponents, 267-74, and finished the year ranked No. 2 in the country by the Pittsburgh Courier. The Blue Tigers had similar success in 1953, outscoring opponents by a total of 266-67 en route to a second-straight unbeaten season. This success was due in large part to the unstoppable running ability of Lewis, who broke free for 1,239 yards in 1952, a single season record that stood until this past season, when Morris Henderson rushed for 1,266 yards.

Lewis began his LU career in 1951, rushing for 1,164 yards and helping to create one of the greatest turn-arounds in program history. After a 1-7 in 1950 in which Lincoln scored just 52 points, the Blue Tigers, on the strength of Lewis’ running, exploded for 290 points in 1951 while going 7-2. Lewis later closed his prolific career in 1954, rushing for 824 yards in an eight-game season that the Blue Tigers finished with a 4-3-1 record.

The holder of nearly every major Lincoln rushing record, Lewis holds the single game record for yards in a single game (245). Lewis joins Lemar Parrish as the only two Lincoln football players to have their jerseys retired, as Lewis’ No. 30 uniform was retired by the athletic department in 2000.

Lewis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 and immediately went on to play for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League until 1965. He later returned to Lincoln to serve as the team’s head football coach from 1973-1975, leading the Blue Tigers to 12 victories. Lewis also served as the head golf coach at LU and, at one point, served as the school’s interim athletic director. .

Lewis was inducted into the Lincoln Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008.

Jason Hall was originally built in 1958. Over the years, an addition was made to the front of the building, along with several other minor renovations.

The first phase of the Jason Hall renovation took place with an installation of a new HVAC system, a new basketball court and bleacher system. In 2008, the second phase addressed safety issues within the build-ing, such as updating the sprinkler system. The Physical Education department received a new office com-plex, complete with private offices and a conference room. New audio/visual equipment was also installed in the PE classrooms. The coaches' offices were also renovated to allow for more privacy. The locker rooms were completely redone and a new weight room with state-of-the-art equipment was constructed. The restrooms, ticket booth and concessions area were also remodeled. Finally, a new Daktronics scoreboard was installed in the gym to allow fans the chance to see up to the second player points and other stats.
