HOME LIFE Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809.Lincoln was the son of Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. He lived in a log cabin in Kentucky until the age of 7.He moved to Indiana and stayed there until the age of 21. Lincoln then moved to the state of Illinois where he practiced law. In 1842 he married Mary Todd and they had 4 sons.

Lincoln was not formally schooled but educated himself by reading several books. Lincoln was known for his strength and wood-splitting.He also was a very good story teller! Mary Todd Lincoln

The Early Years In 1828 Lincoln and a friend took a boat down the Mississippi River to New Orleans where he first experienced the world outside of where he had lived. He also saw slaves for the first time on this trip. In 1832 he served in the Black Hawk War. In 1837 he had a law practice.He served in the Illinois state legislature as a member of the Whig Party.He won an election to Congress in 1846.He often continued doing some aspects of his law practice for a large part of his life.

Major Events March 4, 1861 Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated as the United States 16th President. During this time period the lower South of the United States seceded to from the Confederate States of America.President Lincoln was President during the Civil War (1861-1865). He wrote the Gettysburg Address and gave the speech on November 19, 1863 in which he turned the site of the Battle of Gettysburg into a national war cemetery. Lincoln won re-election in 1864. Lincoln was the first President to be assassinated. He was shot at Ford’s Theatre by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865. Lincoln died the next day.

AccomplishmentsLincoln issued the historic Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free." Wrote and spoke the Gettysburg Address ,which still remains one of the most important speeches and documents in history. ( considered a turning point of the civil war)

The Lincoln Memorial was built in Washington, D.C. to remember this great president. Most known for his eloquent writing and poetry that can still be read today.
