LINCOLNSHIRE ONE VENUESLincolnshire has a really creative community and we’re making sure 12 to 25 year olds feel part of it. As part of Lincolnshire One Venues (LOV), a network of ten arts venues, we are working with young people to create a range of exciting activities and events for and by young people across the county.

Hello There!

Welcome to our new look brochure, packed full of great theatre and arts events open to everyone this autumn and winter.

It’s our 5th Birthday this year and to celebrate University of Lincoln has invested in the future of our venue, supporting many of the changes that audiences have been asking for since I joined the team two years ago.

Alongside our new brochure, we’ve a far more user-friendly website with lots of additional content, making it quicker to buy tickets and to find out more about the shows you love. We’ve also taken over the management of Zing Café Bar and will be looking to expand our offer over the next year and, most significantly of all, we have our own in-house Box Office!

From 12 August 2013 you will be able to buy tickets online, on the phone and in-person at the venue 10am-6pm, Monday-Saturday all year round, and because it’s run by us there will be no supplementary ticket or transaction charges!

I’m sure you’ll agree this is a brilliant news as it now makes it even easier to see great classics like Twelfth Night by Filter and the RSC, innovative performance by Chris Goode and Stan’s Cafe, cutting-edge dance by Jean Abreu or enchanting shows such as The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe – our Christmas treat for all the family.

See you soon

DEVOTED AND DISGRUNTLED ROADSHOW

Tuesday 17 September 10am-6pm Tickets: £5 (includes ‘unlimited’ tea and coffee)*

Last year, Improbable travelled to 28 venues around the UK to start a nationwide conversation about Theatre and the Arts. It was diverse, exciting, fascinating and incredibly useful.

This year they’re back on the road and we are delighted to be hosting the East Midlands leg of the tour. This is your chance to work in Open Space on whatever issue or question is important to you. Nothing is off the agenda. It’s up to us to make theatre better. No one is going to do it for us.

Open Space gives anyone the chance to propose a starting point for discussion, take part in a conversation, flit between them all, or head to the bar. Improbable open the space, you create the agenda. This event is open to all. Come join the conversation.“Everyone is there on equal terms, whether you’re the artistic director of a major regional theatre or a first-year student just beginning to make work….” LYN GARDNER, THE GUARDIAN

A one-woman show that charts the loves and lives of two very different sisters.

Two Actors. Too Many Characters. One Big Ego

Howard Coggins looks like Henry VIII. There’s no escaping that.

Stu McLoughlin doesn’t really look like any of the wives, but he’s going to give it a go.

With live original music, embroidery, Barbie dolls, silly songs and historical hysteria, this promises to be an ill-researched lesson in cross-dressing Tudor history that you’ll never forget.

TWELFTH NIGHT

Thursday 10 – Friday 11 October 7.30pmTickets: £15 Full // £13 Concessions // £5 Students & Under 26 Running Time: 1 hour 30 mins (no interval)

Two worlds collide in this enormously funny and fast-paced production that has music and riotous celebration bursting from the seams.

Olivia’s melancholic, puritanical household clashes head-on with Sir Toby’s insatiable appetite for drunken debauchery. The lovelorn Orsino’s relentless pursuit of Olivia and Malvolio’s secret obsession typify the madness of love in Illyria: land of make-believe and illusion where girls dress as boys, the wise are fools and the fools are wise.

Originally commissioned for the RSC’s Complete Works Festival, this is undoubtedly one of the freshest and most acclaimed Shakespeare productions of recent years.

Antonin Artaud’s Spurt of Blood mixed with The Cenci and The Seashell and The Clergyman in an event that layers French surrealism, physical theatre and contemporary farce to create its very own Theatre of Cruelty, which places identifiable fragments of the real world within a clarified unreality.

Seduced by poetic wording, this version of Tristan Tzara’s DaDa-ist play The Gas Heart examines the breakdown of syntax, systems and the norm. Developed from the original script, the performance explores our understanding of the systematic world in which we live. Enter into a place where sounds and voices are not what they seem and where you can eat ice cream for breakfast.

Microscopic images of bodily fluids created by Gilbert & George from 1996-1998 are magnified and animated by digital artists Mirko Arcese and Luca Biada into a fluid, organic environment that both responds to and is manipulated by Abreu in this intensely physical performance. With music by Paul Wolinski of math rock band 65daysofstatic.

A show that steals its style from the gig, the opera and the recital, The Good, The God and The Guillotine is a music-driven piece of theatre like no other.

Three performers and three laptop musicians create an atmospheric, cross-genre journey through a tangle of relationships and technologies, all set against reactive objects, lights and hand-drawn animations.

This is a personal answer to the universal question, inspired by a reading of Albert Camus’ powerful 1942 novel The Stranger.

This infamous attack on post-war Britain still resonates today, where class snobbery, casual misogyny and sexual inequality have far from evaporated.

An iconic figure of the British stage, Jimmy Porter remains a familiar character: a man whose wit and capability for affection make him irresistible, but whose restless dissatisfaction with himself makes him turn with violence on those who love him.

Fresh from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, this welcome revival of John Osborne’s classic play is given a modern touch, where Alison’s ubiquitous iron is not the only thing steaming.

The Anatomy of Melancholy has been described as “the greatest book ever written”. Nearly 400 years old, it is a vast (1500 page) attempt to identify the causes, symptoms and cures for all kinds of melancholy. Written by vicar and librarian Robert Burton it contains all the wisdom of its age – arcane, outlandish and hilarious. Yet, amidst all the wild stories and suppositions, much of its advice remains as urgent and profound now as it did then. The time has come for Stan’s Cafe to bring the world’s most extraordinary self-help manual to the stage.

Four children – Peter, Susan, Edmund and Lucy – are evacuated from London during the Blitz to stay in a rambling country house. One day, whilst exploring Lucy stumbles across a curious wardrobe, a gateway to a mysterious world and the adventure begins.

For the land of Narnia lies under the power of the White Witch who has cast a terrible spell where it is forever winter, but never Christmas – and very quickly the children find themselves caught up in a deadly struggle between good and evil…

Originally commissioned and staged by the RSC, this musical version performed by the graduating performing arts students at University of Lincoln takes place in-the-round, positioning the audience at the heart of the action and features a large cast, puppetry and digital projection. It’s sure to be a wonderful festive treat for all the family.
