    Waste Classification

The airport waste collection may be divided into four different types: - Solid urban waste - Special and similar waste - Hazardous and non hazardous special waste (as classified by

    the Italian law)- Food waste.

    Waste

SEA is responsible for the waste management at Linate and Malpensa airports.Waste at the airport is generated by different kind of activities such as offices, aircraft cleaning, trades and catering: They are comparable to those produced inside cities andtowns.

Special Similar waste; generated by aircraftcleaning at Malpensa Terminal 2 and by serviceactivities. This kind of waste is still managed

separately from the urban one although as providedby local territorial authorities.

    Solid urban waste:

generated by cleaning operations in all terminals,

auxiliary buildings and related areas, aircraft cleaning includedexcept that from Malpensa Terminal 2

This kind of waste is collected in appropriate equipments(bins and containers), located within the airports premises.

Hazardous and non hazardous special goods:

as established by the Italian official decree,

special waste is produced by airport maintenanceand service activities: it is divided into hazardouswaste (for instance: exhausted oil, oily emulsions, nickel cadmium batteries, lead based batteries, oiland diesel filters, sanitary waste, fluorescent lights, motor oil cans) and non hazardous waste (forinstance: ferrous scrap, expired medicines, alkalinebatteries).

Food Waste: aircraft passengers meals. This kind of waste is handled and disposed by the catering companies operating at both Linate

    and Malpensa airports

    Waste management

In compliance with the current law provisionsSEA implemented a waste managementsystem which is principally based on wastemovement activities within the airport area.At Malpensa Terminal 1 and 2 there is an

internal service for waste collection. The airport waste is moved to a dedicatedarea where it is temporary stored in specialbins/containers and directly delivered to athird company for its disposal .

At Linate airport the disposal of solid urbanwaste produced in offices, canteens, terminal

and air side is carried out by a contractorwhich has been charged on behalf of the localterritorial authority.

These graphs indicate the weight percentageof the total waste amount divided into 4 main

    types.

    Separate Waste Collection

SEA has made great effort to develop a transparent waste management system and reduce the amount of wastedisposal.

In both Linate and Malpensa airports a separate collection is made for recycling materials, such as paper, wood, glass, ferrous scrap and copper.

Paper At Malpensa and Linate airports all trade operators keep thiskind of waste collection separeted.

Glass : At Linate and Malpensa Terminal 2 there arespecial containers for this type of waste.

    Ferrous scraps

Ferrous scraps are collected and stored in specialcontainers located in a dedicated area.

Wood : it is stored to be recycled indedicated containers located in thecentral collection area.

At Malpensa airport since 2004wooden pallets have been recycledand given to Cargo Handlers for airfreight stocking.

At Linate airport wood is collected in aspecial platform.

    Ecological collection area

At both Malpensa and Linate airports twonew areas for ecological collection havebeen planned. At Linate the new infrastructure hasalready been implemented and approved by the local territorial authorities. This ecological area has a surface of3.550 square meters and is properlyequipped in order to handle both solidurban waste and hazardous/nonhazardous waste.Referring to Malpensa airport, theplanning of the new ecological area hasalready been accomplished and SEA isbeing waiting to receive all the requiredauthorizations for its building.
