“We will get them!”

“We will get them ...” This was the assurance of Limpopo’s MEC for

Safety and Liason, Ms Florence Radzilani, during the emotional funeral of an alleged ritual murder victim at Tshilun-goma last weekend.

Radzilani warned that police would leave no stone

unturned in search of the killers of little nine-year-old Mutshidzi Ramanyimi.

The little girl was allegedly ruthlessly murdered in what

the community believes is the work of human parts harvest-

ers, who killed her for body parts.

Ramanyimi went miss-ing on 1 March while

playing with her friends at a neighbouring house. She was not seen again until her body was found half buried in sand at a nearby rivulet.

After the discovery of her body, enraged community members wanted to take the law into their own hands after they had identified three villagers as suspects, but the police could not detain these suspects. The local community leadership worked tirelessly to keep everything under control.

When the coffin carrying the remains of the young girl was lowered to the grave, many of her former schoolmates who were overwhelmed with grief collapsed. There were two funerals at the same time and when Radzilani was to address the community, all gathered together to listen to her speech.

At the emotionally charged service, Radzilani said members of the commu-nity had the responsibility of working together with the police to ensure that the perpetrators were brought to book.

“We are here to give the community and the family the assurance that the sus-pects will soon be behind bars. We have had many serious cases in the province and asked the community to give us time and space to investigate them thoroughly and we succeeded in apprehending the culprits. We can assure you here today that we have established a task team of highly experienced detectives who are busy with the case,” Radzilani said.

She said the community’s responsibil-ity did not entail destroying property.

A seven-year-old girl was raped and left to die in a street at Olifantshoek in the Hlanganani policing area on Sunday.

According to the police's pre-liminary investigation, a 32-year-old suspect was traced and even-tually arrested after a car chase, following the discovery of the raped girl.

It is alleged that the suspect was the last person to be seen with the girl.

According to the information made available by the police, the girl was allegedly sent by her grandmother to deliver house keys at the suspect’s house. The child didn't return and was later discovered by two boys in the street, bleeding and unconscious. The police were alerted about the incident.

The police's provincial spokes-person, Brig Hangwani Mu-laudzi, said that the girl was

rushed to hospital where she died a few hours later. “It was confirmed at the hospital that she had been brutally raped. A post mortem will be conducted soon to determine the cause of death,” said Brig Mulaudzi.

On Tuesday, the suspect ap-peared in the Hlanganani Mag-istrate's Court held in Tiyani and his case was postponed to 26 March for further investigation and a bail application.

Matimba’s art talent impresses teachers

Matimba is congratulated by his principal, Mr Moses Nwandule.

When you see Matimba Kubayi (17) for the first time, you may underestimate the talents of this quiet and humble young man. This Grade 9 pupil from the Marimane High School recently showed that he is an artist in his own right when he built an exact replica of the school he attends at Mbhokota village, near Elim.

“The first time I realised that I could use my hands to produce artistic stuff was when my arts teacher gave all the students an assignment to create anything artistic as part of school work,” he says. “I built my first (model) house and everybody was like ... 'Wow! Matimba, you're tal-ented!'”

When building the replica of the school, Matimba used green wool for grass, plastic empty bottles for window panes, match sticks, cardboard boxes, soil, powdered paint and cooking oil. The result of his endeavours is a stunning institution of learning which has everyone clamouring for more.

He attributes his abilities to inspiration from God and dedi-cation.

“I am happy knowing that my gift comes from God,” Matimba says with a smile. “All my teach-ers tell me to take my art work seriously as much as I do with my school work.”

Matimba reveals that he wish-es to study architecture and the

arts when he has completed matric.

Mr Wilson Kubayi, Matimba's art and culture teacher, is very proud of the young boy's artis-tic abilities. “Matimba is well gifted,” he says. “He is always seen engaged in some artistic creations which keeps him busy while at home. I hope he will go places if he is given proper assistance.”

The school's principal, Mr Moses Nwandule, lauded Ma-timba and described him as a tremendously gifted pupil. “As the school, we are blessed to have a pupil of his calibre and we wish to see his gift being nourished to its full potential,” says Mr Nwandule.

The US$2.65 million World Bank-funded Beit Bridge emer-gency water supply and sanita-tion programme has finally been completed.

The town secretary, Dr Sipho Singo, told Limpopo Mirror that work on the project was completed in February. The programme was supposed to have been completed within a period of 12 months, but due to delays in the procurement of some equipment, most of which were sourced in South Africa, it dragged for almost another year.

The massive project, which was launched in March 2011, was mainly aimed at rehabilitat-ing the existing water and sewer infrastructure in the border town in response to the 2008 cholera outbreak that hit Beit Bridge and claimed several lives. The project was funded by the World Bank through the Government of Zim-babwe and the State and Peace Building Trust Fund (SFP).

“Last month, the World Bank sent its team to conduct a final audit and they were very happy with the work that we jointly

did with Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) under the project, as our procurement and utilization of equipment conformed to their standards. What is worth commending is that we had an amazing, good working relationship with Zinwa throughout the entire project and we both benefited from the common understanding that we shared,” he added.

Zinwa finished repairing one of the major supply dams and the installation of pumps and back-up generators. Prior to the programme, only one dam had been operating, resulting in an inadequate water supply. “One of the town’s major supply dams, which had leakages, has since been repaired and it is now able to store enough water. Once we open water from Zhovhe Dam, it will be pumped into the storage dam. We have also secured a back-up generator for the treat-ment plant to ensure consistent and uninterrupted water pumping in the event of power failure or load shedding,” Singo said.

He mentioned that the suc-

cessful completion of the project would be used as a benchmark for future funding. Under the programme, water supply was restored from three megalitres per day to five megalitres. The council also managed to replace raw water pumps and consumer and bulk-water meters and also procured water-quality-testing equipment.

The latest development is ex-pected to ease the perennial water shortages and constant sewer bursts that continued to dog residents of the border town. This has largely been attributed to a continuous breakdown of the main pipeline, coupled with Zinwa’s failure to pump adequate water to the reservoirs. The treat-ment plant has a capacity to pump only 6 000 cubic metres of water per hour, yet the town requires 15 000 cubic metres per hour. Zinwa pumps water from the Limpopo River into its two storage dams, but due to constant breakdowns of its main pumping system and inadequate filters, the water utility used to rely on one dam, which feeds into the reservoirs.

MEC Fulufhelo Radzilani urged the community to assist the police in finding the killers. She said police would leave no stone unturned in the hunt for the killers.

(From page 1)“Taking responsibility does

not mean burning someone's house because that may result in

another case that will also take the shine from the case being investigated,” said Radzilani.

She said if people left every-

thing in the hands of the police, it would not help them either. “Limpopo is a community of some 5 million people with

14 326 police officers, so you will understand why I say people must help the police,” said Radzilani. She urged the community to use the girl's death to take a look at itself.

“We must ask our-selves why certain wrong things happen in our community,” she added.

Community leader Ms Magdeline Netshia-vha, who is the Sanco Vhembe chairperson, said the death of Mut-shidzi had touched the whole nation and not the family alone. “It is our responsibility as the community to stand up and declare our utmost support for the police because, if we do not work with the police, we will then start blam-ing them, saying that they are not working. Criminals live in our midst and it is us who can expose them and give them no place to hide in our areas. If we do not do that, we will not achieve anything,” she said.

Municipal employee allegedly assaultedAn employee of the Makhado Municipality's, Wisani Tl-habela (34), is nursing his wounds after he was alleg-edly assaulted while on duty at Banderlierkop, where he had attended to an electric-ity breakdown on Sunday. At the time of going to press, it was not certain whether the incident was a result of road rage, but one suspect had been detained for some time before appearing in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Tlhabela explained that he was driving the municipal ve-hicle with two colleagues when he overtook a white Mahindra.

The Mahindra bakkie was fol-lowing a horse with a young girl on it. The driver of the other vehicle then chased after them and stopped them.

“He came over and started hitting me on the mouth with a wooden object,” said Tlhabela. “When I asked him why he was assaulting me, he said I had frightened his horse. If it's true that we had frightened his horse, he should at least have spoken with us amicably rather than using violence against a person who didn't wish to fight,” said Tlhabela.

The three municipal workers phoned their supervisor in the Makhado office and told him

about the incident. The supervi-sor then contacted the police, who started investigating the case. It appears that, at the same time, the driver of the Mahindra had gone to the Bandelierkop SAPS to try and report a case of reckless driving.

The mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mu-tavhatsindi, condemned the as-sault inflicted on the municipal-ity's employee in the strongest possible terms.

He made a public appeal to all sections of the community not to impede municipal em-ployees while they are on duty. “Our employees are going to feel unsafe while discharging their

duties and the munici-pality will be blamed for not rendering its responsibility effec-tively and efficiently,” Mutavhatsindi said. He also commended Tlha-bela's two collegues for not taking the law into their own hands and fighting the man who had assaulted Tlhabela, as this would have ob-structed the course of justice.

The spokesperson for the Makhado po-lice, Capt Maano Sa-diki, confirmed that a 60-year-old suspect was arrested on Mon-day and charged with assault. He appeared in court on Tuesday morning and the case was postponed to 19 April for further inves-tigation.

Freddy Mulovhedzi (55).

The robbery case against four accused, three men and one woman, was postponed to 15 April for the court's final decision to consider trial in the High Court.

Freddy Mulovhedzi (55), Fulufhelo Mulo-vhedzi (22), Lufuno Mavhunge (29) and Ms Vhu-lahani Ndou (40) stand accused of robbery, where R28 000 was taken from the house of a lo-cal stokvel's treasurer on 3 October 2012.

The money belonged to the stokvel, of which Ms Ndou is said to be a member. Ndou was, however, only arrested later, after the police reckoned that she might have planned the robbery at the house of Mrs Joyce Mukwevho at Tshakhuma-Luvhalani.

Acting Vhembe District Executive Mayor Cllr Lucas Manyuha (second from left) comforts members of the Ramanyimi family on the loss of their beloved Mutshidzi Ramanyimi, who was ritually murdered. Also in the photo is the mayor of Thulamela, Cllr Grace Mahosi (right).

The Ramanyimi family of Tshi-lungoma outside Thohoyandou, who recently lost their beloved first-born child at the hands of al-leged ritual killers, said the visit on Friday by officials of government has revived their hope that the perpetrators will soon be arrested.

The family, whose nine-year-old daughter Mutshidzi Ramanyimi was found at a nearby rivulet after being missing for almost a week, were vis-ited by the executive mayor of Vhem-be, Cllr Lucas Manyuha, Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi and other officials of the municipalities and councillors on Thursday. They were in the company of Vhembe House of Traditional Leaders executive mem-ber Thovhele Mafharalala Netsianda.

Representing the family, Pastor Fu-lufhedzani Netshitavhe narrated how the child went missing while playing with others and how she was finally found murdered in a nearby rivulet. “The mysterious death of our child saddened us and left us with many questions unanswered. Police are add-ing to our pain by not communicating with us,” he said. “Names have been mentioned, but what we hear is that three people were questioned but not arrested.” To add insult to injury, the family has no case number so far and they do not know what is happening with the case. Responding to the fam-ily’s plea, Cllr Lucas Manyuha urged the community to be involved in the fight against crime, saying the police alone would not be able to solve the

case. “We are here as government to come and be with you in these dif-ficult times. We will always be with you. We will support you and we are here to mourn with you. We will be with you till you bury your loved one,” he said. Mayor Grace Mahosi said it was becoming worrying that most of the victims of violent crimes turned out to be women. “We gave birth to men and now they are killing us. Where should we go and live? What is happening, and which de-mon is working here?” she said.

“We are now prom-ising here that we will take your concerns to our seniors, so that this case is thoroughly in-

vestigated and the perpetrators be brought to book as a matter of ur-gency,” she said.

Representing Sanco Vhembe, Mr Thiathu Ravhura said they were con-cerned that people were being killed senselessly. “We are calling upon state organs to arrest all those who are involved in this child’s murder, and we will once again go out there and protest against the granting of bail to whoever is arrested in connection with the case,” he said.

Worries about problematic dump site

Tshiozwi Dynamos hammered Vleifontein United 4-0 in a Safa Vhembe SAB league match on Sunday.

The Dynamos playmaker, Aluwani “Killer” Nedzamba, could not live up to his fans’ expectations, as he was tightly marked. United enjoyed more

The South African Custodial Management (SACM) service, which operates under the name the Kutama Sinthumule Cor-rectional Centre, has taken the Makhado Municipality to task with the office of the MEC of the Department of Health and Social Development, Dr Norman Mabasa, on issues of an “underdeveloped and prob-lematic dumping site”.

The dumping site is situated behind the prison facility and, according to the prison man-agement, “the main concern is the prevalence of flies and mosquitoes at the site and at the Kutama Sinthumule Correctional Centre”.

In a letter to Mabasa, the SACM’s managing director, Mr Pieter Jordaan, says that the problematic situation at the cen-tre is a health threat to offenders, prison staff and the residents. “The outbreak of illnesses such as typhoid fever, cholera, shigel-

loses, salmonellae, polio as well as malaria is a risk that needs to be managed,” Jordaan wrote.

The prison management fears that the continuing problem at the dumping site could negatively affect the quality of the prison’s borehole, which provides water for at least 3024 sentenced of-fenders and a large number of staff.

“The local municipality and Vhembe District [Municipality] have, for a number of consecu-tive months, not been able to pro-vide the facility with bulk water,” Jordaan stated. “The facility has been totally dependent on bore-holes to supply the correctional centre with water as there is a water shortage in the area.”

According to the prison man-agement, the problem has been addressed with the mayor and the prison has assisted the mu-nicipality “with machinery (cost at about R20 000) in an attempt to improve the situation at the site,

with little effect”. The spokesper-son for the Department of Health and Social Development, Sinenh-lanhla Gumede, confirmed that the MEC’s office had received a letter of grievance and a request for intervention from SACM’s director on 6 March. “We can confirm that the prison’s letter reached us, and that we are refer-ring the matter to the Department of Environmental Affairs,” said Gumede.

When contacted for comment, the spokesperson for the Makha-do Municipality, Mr Louis Bo-bodi, said that the municipality was aware of the situation at the dumping site and that they were attending to the problem. “The main cause was the breakdown of our equipment (compactor), but now it’s in operation,” Bobodi said on Monday. “And the only solution to flies would be to cover accumulated waste with soil to eradicate fly-breeding places.”

ball possession, but their promising moves were turned into nightmares by the rock-solid de-fence of Dynamos.

Dynamos were cool-ing the ball down in the middle of the park, giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased. Matodzi Maruli opened the score in the 16th minute after re-ceiving a beautiful pass from Thabelo “Chigi” Netshiendeulu.

United was strong in the far back and the striking force depart-ments, but the team lacked cohesion in the middle of the park.

Dynamos’ second goal came in the 35th minute, when Ma-todzi Maruli dribbled past three United defenders in a row and scored easily.

The visitors got a chance, but their striker, Surprise Raulinga, shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Dynamos put matters beyond doubt when Aluwani Nedzamba scored his team’s third goal in the 67th minute. A substitute, Mashudu Nengovhela, hit the final nail into United’s coffin when he beat keeper Vhonani Levhusha hands down with a ground cutter.

Raymond Mashau of United left his opponent ,Thabelo “Chigi” Net-shiendeulu, behind.

Tshathogwe’s court order made finalThe North Gauteng High Court has confirmed that the court order against Joshua Nthabalala and Solomon Tho-ba should become permanent. This follows after the Tshatho-gwe Communal Property As-sociation (CPA) approached the court on 26 June 2012 and requested an interdict to stop the two respondents from selling portions of land to members of the public.

The court order, which was only made final on 12 February, prohibits the first and second respondents from allocating and demarcating land to any person on the farms known as Bankop and Valdiglen along the Mailaskop road.

The land rightfully belongs to the CPA, who has earmarked it for cattle farming to create employment for at least 250 land-claim beneficiaries.

According to the CPA’s trea-surer and committee member, Mr Dan Masengana, there are about 30 completed houses and houses without roofs, and about 60 empty, fenced stands which have been allocated illegally by

Nthabalala and Thoba. “The or-der is made pending an eviction application to be made within 30 days from the date on which the order was issued or made final,” said Masengana.

The communications man-ager at the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform, Mr Nicholas Magada, said that the department was appealing to all illegal land occupiers to comply fully with the court or-der by removing their valuable assets and property, including the fences and shacks.

“Otherwise they will suffer heavy losses during the im-pending eviction order by law enforcement agencies,” advised Magada.

Magada warned members of the community to refrain from buying any land as it is theft and fraud by a syndicate that pretends to represent the CPA. “People are urged to report these illegal activities to the police as they are being robbed of their hard-earned money,” he said.

According to Masengana, the rightful land-claim beneficia-ries are registered and verified

members of Tshathogwe CPA. The claimants comprise original members of the dispossessed community and their direct de-scendants, who had since gone to stay at different areas in the district.

When contacted for com-ment, Nthabalala said: “People who are running to the newspa-pers are not legitimate claim-ants of the land. The problem surfaced when these people started not informing us when there were CPA meetings. Our lawyer was misled. We are still members of the CPA. There’s nothing wrong with allocating stands for people who have no place to stay. Even those people [CPA members] have stands and houses on that land.”

Nthabalala had served a term in the managing committee as chairperson of the Tshathogwe CPA before a new executive committee could be elected.

The case served before Jus-tice Makgoba in the North Gauteng High Court and he also awarded a cost order in favour of the Tshathogwe CPA.

Tshathogwe Communal Property Association´s treasurer and committee member, Mr Dan Masengana, is seen in this photo, standing in front the illegally occupied land.

For the second year in a row, the Roman’s Pizza franchise in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) snatched up the Marketer of the Year award. The award was presented to them during a gala evening held on Saturday, 9 March, at Randlords in Johannesburg. All 129 pizza stores across South Africa are judged, among others, on their community involvement and sponsorships for this particular award. Christel and Corné Smith, local franchise owners, thanked their team (photo) for all their hard work and dedication in helping to clinch this award.

Setback for Rambau in civil caseLocal teacher wins national awardRonnie Rambau, the senior regional magistrate who is suing the Limpopo Mirror for defamation, suffered a setback when he was ordered to pay legal costs at the maxi-mum level after asking that an application that served before the North Gauteng High Court be postponed.

Zoutnet, publishers of the Limpopo Mirror and Zoutpans-berger newspapers, asked the court last Wednesday to remove the causes of the complaint against them. In the papers filed, Zoutnet’s legal representative argues that Rambau’s accusa-tions are so vague and incom-prehensible that it is impossible to file a plea.

The application was opposed by Rambau, but his legal rep-resentative was not ready to argue the case and he admitted in court to not being prepared. Judge Mmonoa Teffo criticised him and said it was his respon-sibility to have documents in order and file them timeously.

Advocate Christiaan Bester appeared on behalf of Zoutnet and argued that the exception application should be heard. When it became clear that the judge would rather opt for a postponement, he asked that a punitive cost order be awarded against Rambau.

Judge Teffo agreed and awarded cost on an attorney-to-client basis. The ex-ception application will probably serve before the High Court to-wards the end of May

Ms Grace Neluvhola, principal of Tshiawelo High at Vleifontein, has proved that hard work pays.

She ended third in the national teachers awards for secondary school leadership that was held in Midrand a fortnight ago.

She completed her senior teaching diploma from Tivumbeni College of Education in 1970 and started her teaching career the next year at Tlangelani Primary in the Malamule area. From 1978 to 1982, she was at Sinthumule High and from 1983 she joined Tshiawelo High.

“While working at Sinthumule, I enrolled at the University of the South Africa where I obtained my BA degree and a master’s degree. Currently, I am studying towards my doctorate,” she added.

“When I was appointed as school principal, my vision was to overhaul the school entirely. The school was considered to be dysfunctional at that time, but today we can boast a matric pass rate of 97,5%,” she proudly mentioned.

Neluvhola said that at the beginning of each year they do a post-mortem of matric results and concentrate on an improvement strategy. Accord-ing to her, the turn-around at the school started with instilling a sense of discipline amongst the pupils and the staff and “the results speak for themselves”.

Neluvhola said that parental involvement has also increased since her arrival at the school.

During the presentation of the awards, the Minis-ter of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga, said the awards were meant to encourage educators to work hard for the purpose of improving education in South Africa. “We have seen positive results since we started the idea of the award ceremony some years ago. This creates a spirit of hard work and helps to improve results in our country,” she said.

Two other educators from Vhembe ended in fourth position. Ms Patricia Ramango of Magov-hani ended in fourth position in primary school leadership, while Mr Ronald Mufamadi of Tshi-lidzini Special School ended in position four in the Special Needs category.

Grace Neluvhola poses with her trophy.

this year. The exception application

of Zoutnet is currently halting Rambau’s civil case against several individuals and govern-ment officials. In April last year, Rambau’s legal team served papers on no fewer than 11 par-ties, accusing them of, among others, his unlawful arrest and prosecution.

In the papers, the arrest is described as malicious and without reasonable or probable cause.

Rambau’s legal team argues that, through these actions, he had been deprived of the preservation of his status as a senior magistrate and suffered physical and psychological trauma whilst in jail.

He claims just over R21 million in damages from the parties, which include the police offi-cers who arrested him and investigated the case, the national direc-tor of public prosecu-tions and the Minister of Police and of Justice.

Almost as an after-thought, Rambau also sued the Zoutpans-berger, Limpopo Mir-ror and Isabel Venter

for defamation. Some of the articles focussing on Rambau’s court appearances were written by Venter. In this case, he de-mands R20 million because his reputation was tarnished.

Rambau, together with his co-accused, attorney T E Lubisi and ex-state prosecutor Estene Willemse, are facing corrup-tion charges in the Musina Magistrates’ Court for allegedly trying to influence the outcome of court cases.

The case has been postponed on several occasions and the accused will have to appear in court again on 9 April.

A young businessman, Mr Rudzani Mamphaga, has honoured his late son, Munei, by starting a foundation in his name. The main purpose of the foundation is to help young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to go to school, university or other institutions and also to develop sports stars. Mamphaga previously donated R50 000 towards a Sinthumule winter school, which was also attended by top South Africa Grade 12 Maths and Science learner Farisani Ramabulama from Manaledzi. Limpopo PEC disbanded by MEC The future of the premier of Lim-popo, Mr Cassel Mathale, hangs in the balance. It came after the national executive council (NEC) of the ruling ANC announced earlier this week it was going to dissolve the Limpopo provincial executive council and the ANC Youth League’s national executive committee.

While Mathale remains the premier for now, it is unlikely that he will keep his position.

Both structures opposed Pres Zuma’s re-election as party president in Mangaung last year December.

They campaigned for former deputy ANC President Kgalema Motlanthe to unseat Zuma.

Party secretary-general Gwede Mantashe said an interim team would run the league and the provincial executive committee. He said the party’s national executive commit-tee resolved to dissolve the PEC in Limpopo for un-ANC behaviour, like removing pro-Zuma officials.

“It will be replaced with an interim structure and given nine months to work towards convening a provin-cial conference,” said Mantashe in a statement. Mr Cassel Mathale.

Mr. Ronnie Rambau.

Visionary leader passes awayOne of Vhembe’s most progressive traditional leaders, who strove for development in his area, Chief Mphathele Takalani of Mukula, is no more.

Takalani (42), who worked for the South African Air Force, died last Thursday while on a job-related course in Polokwane. The cause of his death was not made public by the family. The death of the much-loved chief, who had received an R18 million completed water project which he had initiated on behalf of his community, only a fortnight ago, has plunged the whole province into deep mourning. The news of his death spread like wildfire and condolences started pouring in from all corners of the country. On Saturday, Limpopo MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison Ms Florence Radzilani and several other dignitaries, including the act-ing executive mayor of Vhembe,

Cllr Lucas Manyuha, and Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi, visited the family to mourn with the family. They met the family, which was led by Mailausumbwa Kennedy Tshivhase. Vhakoma Vho Kenneth Takalani con-firmed the passing away of the chief, saying the death came as a shock to them. Tshivhase commended the late chief’s late farther, saying he was the one who fought tirelessly for him to ascend t h e t h r o n e amidst family squabbles. The Takalani fam-ily will also be r emembered for the role they played in the struggle against apartheid, he added.

After four years of participating in the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) Eco School programme, Ridgeway College received the prestigious Green Flag Award. Beit Bridge in $1 million partnershipBeit Bridge Town Council has entered into a US$1 million partnership deal with Zimba-bwe National Road Adminis-tration (Zinara) to construct several loop-roads in the bor-der town.

The move is aimed at decon-gesting major roads leading to the border post. Town Secretary Dr Sipho Singo said they had engaged with Zinara to speed up the project, which is expected to be completed ahead of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly, which will be jointly hosted by Zimbabwe and Zambia in Victoria Falls and Livingstone respectively in August.

The loop roads will cover

a stretch of between 3km and 4km under the first phase of the project.

“You will appreciate that the main highway leading to the border post is extremely busy as it also caters for traffic passing through our town, resulting in massive congestion, especially during peak periods. During the just-ended festive season, we had long winding queues of traffic that stretched for several kilometres and, in the process, blocked the smooth flow of local traffic,” he said.

Singo said under their joint venture with Zinara, the local authority would provide labour and equipment while the roads agency would supply the neces-

sary material and technical sup-port. “As council, we have the required equipment for use in the construction of the roads and Zinara will offer material such as bitumen to tar the roads.”

Beit Bridge is reportedly the busiest inland port of entry in sub-Saharan Africa, which han-dles a huge volume of traffic - mostly commercial vehicles, including those destined for neighbouring countries such as Zambia, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of Congo - passing through daily.

On average, the border handles about 8 000 travellers daily, with the figures increasing to 20 000 during peak periods, such the festive season.

Local women seeks devine intervention

Some of the marchers, photographed along the streets of Thohoyandou.

Pastor Maria Mamedzi and Dr Maxwell Masakona lead the candle-lighting ceremony, symbolizing an end to the forces of darkness.

Hundreds of concerned women in Vhembe from different denominations marched through the streets of Thohoyandou two weeks ago, in protest against rapes and abuse perpetuated against women.

Led by Pastor Maria Mamedzi, the former Speaker of Mutale Municipality, the founder of the Come and Worship Jesus Church and the convener of the Vhembe Progressive Women’s Movement, the women, with a few men, marched from Khoroni Hotel to the Thohoyandou Town Hall. They were displaying placards and ban-ners denouncing the ever-increasing violence on women. Instead of singing struggle songs, the women were singing hymns and reciting verses from the Bible. At the hall, the women listened to speakers and also prayed together as one.

A candle-lighting ceremony to repel the forces of darkness was also held during the function.

Pastor Mamedzi said they were con-cerned about the con-tinuing abuse, rapes and violence being perpetrated against women and children. “There have been many interventions from different quar-ters, trying to curb the scourge. Police have

tried, many campaigns have been held, govern-ment introduced many programmes, but all seem to be in vain. The Bible tells us that when all else has failed, we have to look unto God. He has all the answers to our problems and challenges,” she added. Speaking during the prayer service, international speaker and leader of the Calvary Christian Church Dr Maxwell Masakona urged women to be united in prayer, saying nothing beat the power of prayer. Quoting from the Bible, he told those gathered that women in biblical times achieved great things because of prayer.

“Prayer has the power to change politics and social injustices. We now urge you all to continue praying all the time and God will listen to your prayers,” said Masakona.

Man in custody after death of mother

Univen and Royal Council “need each other”

Ms Nyamukamadi Rerani.

The community of Maelula has been shaken by the death of Granny Nyamukamadi Rerani, who was stabbed to death two weeks ago.

The 68-year-old woman was allegedly stabbed several times in the head. The incident stunned most of the residents, who knew her as someone who never argued with anyone.

The spokesperson for the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadike, said that when the police arrived at the scene, the deceased was lying on the ground. “She could not talk nor walk,” he said. “We have opened a case of murder and investigations are still continuing,” he added. He further confirmed

that the accused, who had been on the run ever since the incident happened, was eventu-ally arrested in Gauteng. Livhuwani Rerani (40), son of the deceased, briefly appeared in the Louis Trichardt Mag-istrate’s Court and the case was postponed to 28 March.

The deceased was buried on Saturday at Maelula.

A delegation of the University of Venda, led by Vice-Chancel-lor Peter Mbati, visited King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana at the royal residence in Dzanani last Thursday.

The purpose of the meet-ing was to cement the existing partnership between Univen and the Ramabulana royal and tra-ditional councils and to express the university’s appreciation to the king for his support in the developmental trajectory of the university.

Mbati acknowledged the role that the king’s late father, Khosikhulu PR Mphephu, in the establishment of Univen. He urged the royal family to work with the university regarding research and to assist in leverag-ing investment opportunities for the development of the university and the entire area.

“I value the role that the uni-versity is playing in educating our nation,” Mphephu Ramabu-lana said. He reiterated that he was honoured by the university’s

visit to the royal family and commended the university for its good work, particularly the provision of quality education. He undertook to bring mining companies and the university together for the purpose of ef-fectively using available mineral resources. “We need each other,” said Mphephu. He indicated that the university should play a vital role in social development since the majority of students that are registered with the university come from this area.

“Acquire skills and become self-sufficient”

Students who have shown discipline and dedication since the beginning of the year were rewarded with school bags. Also in the photo are the centre staff, as well as the founder of the centre, Ms Esther Mushaathama (fourth from right, with hat).

Mvelaphanda´s founder, Ms Esther Mushaathama, is thanked by students who passed through her hands and are now working. On the left is Mr Abraham Welawela, who is manager at one of the local guest houses and at the right is Ms Murendeni Magavha, an admin clerk.

A call was made for all South Africans to ac-quire skills that will make them self-sufficient in order stop blaming foreigners for job losses.

Speaking during an event to welcome new stu-dents at Mvelaphanda Skills Development Train-ing and Projects at Tshisahulu, businesswoman-cum-community-leader and founder of the centre, Ms Esther Mushaathama, said there had been a lot of violence directed at foreigners by locals.

She said locals saw foreigners as competitors and claimed that they were taking their jobs and

wages. According to her, this could change if the youth could be given the chance to acquire skills that would make them self-sufficient. “Most of our youth are not working because of the lack of skills.

Some have good academic qualifications, but cannot find jobs. We need people who are equipped with skills that can create jobs for themselves,” she emphasised.

She said her institution had produced many people over the years who went out and were

making a contribution to the country’s econ-omy. Mr Abraham Welawela, one of the former students who followed a course in the hospitality indus-try, and now a man-ager at one of the local guest houses, said the centre had changed his life for the better. “I was reduced to a beg-gar and was absolutely nothing when I arrived here in 1998. I did not have any money, but Ms Mushaathama gave me the chance to study and today I am proud that I am living my dreams,” he said.

Family members and friends gathered at Khubvi village a fortnight ago, to unveil the tombstones of Joe and Nyaluvhimba Dzebu.

Gogos around Malamulele were given whistles as part of fighting the increased raping of chil-dren and elderly people in the area.

This follows after two grannies, aged 82 and 66, were recently raped in the Malamulele area.

The incidents have sparked differences among residents about the safety of elderly people.

zela village said the move by the police would help to keep them safe. Granny Mithavini Chauke (74) said they lived in fear because when they listened to the radio, they heard about numerous murders and rapes.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested a suspect in connection of the rape of the two gogos in Elim.

Gogos given whistles to protect them

Crocs wreak havoc in Beit Bridge village

Some of the gogos, photographed with their whistles.

According to the head of crime prevention in Malamulele, Col Chawa Solomon Serekwana, the police had taken a decision to provide elderly women with whistles. When they are attacked, they can make a lot of noise to inform their neighbours.

“We are also worried because in most of the cases where the gran-nies were raped, they were staying alone,” said Serekwana.

Gogo Nyanisi Mal-uleleke (79) of Phapha-

A local boy, Isaac Ndou, photographed at a pool where some of the crocodiles can be found. The deadly reptiles have been attacking villagers´ goats and dogs in Mtetengwe village for the past two weeks.

The community of Mtetengwe village outside Beit Bridge has been losing goats and dogs to marauding crocodiles that have descended on the Mtetengwe River.

The deadly reptiles are be-lieved to be part of the estimated 15 000 crocodiles that were washed into the Limpopo River from the Rakwena Crocodile Farm in South Africa during the January floods.

Mtetengwe River is a tributary which flows into the Limpopo River and it is suspected that the crocodiles could have found their way into a nearby pool through

the flow of water. Villagers who spoke to Limpopo Mirror said they were now living in fear of crocodile attacks, amid reports that a local herdboy, who went missing two weeks ago, could have been attacked by the rep-tiles. However, the local police spokesperson, Chief Supt Law-rence Chinhengo, said they were still investigating the mysterious disappearance of the boy. One of the villagers, Mr Malindi Masilu, said he had lost six goats and a dog to the reptiles over a period of two weeks. “Crocs are way-laying our goats in a pool and I suspect they could be from South

Africa. In fact, since I came to this village about 20 years ago, we have never witnessed such incidents because it is known that the Mtetengwe River has had no crocodiles until now,” he said.

Mr Samuel Muleya said villag-ers were now afraid to fish in the river “because there are croco-diles occupying a pool there. Our goats are going missing every day and this is because of these crocodiles,” he said.

The local ward councillor, Mr Joseph Muleya, said they had since informed a local safari op-erator contracted by Beit Bridge Rural District Council.

One of eight Malawians who were allegedly linked to an or-ganised syndicate that stole five top-of-the-range cars worth R4 million from Durban in South Africa before smuggling them into Zimbabwe, has been acquitted.

Lee Shas Ajiba (31) of Muchenjili village under Chief Jalasi area in Malawi had pleaded not guilty to smuggling and car theft charges when he appeared before Regional Magistrate Jo-seph Mabeza two weeks ago.

Ajiba could not hold back tears of joy and jumped as he stood in the dock. He shouted in his native Chewa language, celebrating his acquittal. In acquitting him, Mr Mabeza noted that there was no substantial evidence linking Ajiba to the alleged offence. The complainant, a South African, also refused to attend court as a key witness.

Allegations against Ajiba were

that, on 8 August last year, he teamed up with seven other Malawians and went to the com-plainants’ houses in Durban where they allegedly stole five cars and drove off unnoticed. The court heard that on 13 Au-gust, Ajiba and his alleged ac-complices smuggled the stolen vehicles into Zimbabwe through undesignated entry points along the Limpopo River near Dumba village in Beit Bridge.

Acting on a tip-off from local villagers, police officers were deployed to the various sites along the river. They also sealed off major highways. During the course of the operation, they ar-rested the Malawians, following an ambush near the Limpopo River. Three of the Malawians were arrested after their vehicles, a Toyota Fortuner and a Toyota Raider, got stuck in the sand on the Limpopo River. They then allegedly informed police that

there were five more people on their way and another ambush was laid, leading to Ajiba’s arrest and that of two others, following the interception of their cars, a Nissan Navara twin cab and a Toyota Hilux Raider at a road block in Lutumba.

Two men managed to escape and were, however, later arrested after the rear tyres of their cars were shot at by police officers while they were fleeing from an-other roadblock near Bubi along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road.

The Malawians were found in possession of fake vehicle reg-istration documents, counterfeit temporary import permits of the stolen cars, duplicate keys and the tracking and locking systems were also tampered with.

The court heard that the eight men were using Zimbabwe as a transit point before later smug-gling the stolen vehicles into Malawi through Mozambique.

SA rejects new Zimbabwian documentation

“Keep up the good work” - MotshegaReri’s rescues struggling school

The South African government has insisted that it will not embark on a second phase of the regularisation of undocumented Zimbabweans staying in the country illegally.

Home Affairs spokesperson Mr Ronnie Mamo-epa told Limpopo Mirror that the documentation exercise for Zimbabweans has been finalised and would not be extended. Zimbabwe, through its Home Affairs Minister, Mr Kembo Mohadi, had reportedly approached the South African government over the possible extension of the documentation exercise for Zimbabweans living in the country illegally.

“We have closed the doors [documentation of Zimbabweans] forever. If there are those who did not take up that offer, they are being deported,” Mamoepa said.

South Africa suspended the deportation of un-documented Zimbabweans in May 2009 and later introduced a special dispensation during which Zimbabweans were given an opportunity to regula-rise their stay in South Africa by applying for work, business and study permits. South Africa officially completed the process of taking applications on 31 December 2010.

The documentation process was, however, later extended to 31 July 2011, following a special re-quest from the Zimbabwean government, largely due to a backlog in its processing passports for the citizens. The dispensation was to allow Zimbabwe-ans to enter and remain in South Africa without legal and proper documents and, through this dis-pensation, they were not subjected to deportation.

The end of the documentation process culmi-nated in the deportation of illegal Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa, which resumed on 7 October 2011, marking the end of the amnesty for the illegal immigrants.

The first batch of 261 deportees was brought in from the Lindela detention centre outside Johan-nesburg in four buses under escort of SA Home Affairs officials.

Mohadi said, however, he would continue to engage his South African counterpart, Naledi Pan-dor, over the second phase of the documentation of Zimbabwe. “Engagements will continue because this is not a once-off thing. A lot of our people con-tinue to cross the border into South Africa without proper travel documents and it is something that happens every day,” he said.

Min Angie Motshega and several VIPs look on while pupils are using the new computers.

Basic Education Minister An-gie Motshega challenged teach-ers in the Vhembe district to make use of the new technology at their disposal and keep aloft their reputation of being the best district when it comes to maths and science.

Speaking at the Biaba Makha-do multipurpose centre during the launch of the Vhembe ICT centre two weeks ago, Motshega said Vhembe was a stable region and consistent when it came to producing good results.

The centre will be focussing on the training of teachers in tech-nology, using distance learning and teaching.

Motshega praised Vhavenda King Toni Mphephu, who she said was supporting education, and MEC Namane Masemola, who she said had done well as under his stewardship the prov-ince was able to surpass the 60% pass rate.

The Vhembe centre has a com-puter room with 50 computer ter-minals, educational aids, Internet connections and training facili-ties. Motshega, who was accom-panied by King Mphephu, MEC Masemola, Makhado Mayor Da-vid Mutavhatsindi and Vodacom Limpopo Chief Executive Malik Melamu, said the centre was one of the nine being established by

Vodacom in each of South Af-rica’s provinces.

The Vodacom Information and Technology Centre is expected to boost the training of teachers in technology in the province and will help train about 1 400 teach-ers a year. Mr Melamu said that the real brilliance of the project was in the technology. “We believe that our technology can work as an enabler and will have a significant effect on the quality and accessibility of education and resources in our schools. We are excited to track the progress of the teachers and the schools that they come from over the coming months,” he added.

Tshivhuyuni Primary School is located in urban Shayan-dima, but the school looks far worse than schools in the most remote villages.

To start with, the school does not have a fence or playground, lacks an administration block, does not have enough furniture and there is no office.

Things are set to change this year. They received office fur-niture to the value of R12 000 from philanthropic businessman David Mureri of Reri’s Insur-ance Brokers last week .

The principal of the school, Ms Mable Thovhakale, said she tried knocking on different

doors but with no luck. “We have tried everything in

the book to solicit donations. We wrote many business plans and many letters asking for help, but no one helped us until I met Mr Mureri,” said Thovhakale.

She said it was by chance that she met Mureri during a social function and they agreed to meet at the school. “He arrived at the school and we had our meeting, but I did not realize that he had noticed that we are a needy school.

He surprised me when he called to say that he had some furniture that we could use,” she said.

She said she was happy to be associated with Mureri, who has a heart of gold and who thinks about the poor in the community.

“This is a good omen for us and our school. We are really starting the year on a high note and we are greatly encouraged,” she added.

Mureri, who has spent more than a million rand in sponsor-ing community initiatives, said he was touched when he found the principal using a worn down desk as office furniture.

Those wishing to help the school can do so by calling the principal at 073 442 9628.

Cooperative builds houses for the poor

Refund for Lakhana

Young adults open hearts for disabled

With the housing backlog so high in the province, when a cooperative builds houses for the poor, the whole province rejoices.

This happened recently when Shimambani Brick Cooperative in Giyani donated houses to three destitute families at Mahlathi village,

Ward 19, in Giyani. During the official handing-over ceremony, Premier Cassel Mathale praised the cooperative. Speaking while presenting the houses to the families of Tracy Hlungwani, Barisa Mabasa and Risimati Shibambu, Mathale said it was the first time he had seen a cooperative donate houses to poor people.

“Our people deserve good houses and we appreciate the fact that a cooperative such as Shimambani partners the government in develop-ment,” he said.

The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mr Clifford Motsepe, said he was pleasantly surprised when he received a call from the cooperative, saying they had built three houses for the poor and would like to hand them over.

“We normally expect calls from cooperatives to be requests for more money and not for them to be involved in cheerful giving,” said Motsepe.

Hlungwani’s rondavel collapsed and one could see her from outside while she was asleep. The Mabasa family of eight has no breadwinner and they were all staying in a dilapidated hut. Shib-ambu, who is blind, stayed in a house which could collapse on him anytime.

“All these families are the poorest of the poor and they were chosen by the community when members of the cooperative asked us to identify the three poorest families,” said ward councillor Stranger Maswanganyi.

Proud owner Mr Risimati Shibambu relaxes at his new home after it was handed over to him.

It took the provincial traffic department’s of-fice in Makhado nearly four months to rectify a mistake in a case where they had wrongfully given a motorist two traffic tickets for a single road offence.

Mr Ebrahim Lakhana was forced to pay a traffic fine twice. On 27 November last year, he was con-fronted by traffic officials about an unpaid traffic fine. He explained that he had paid the fine on 22 October already, but the same traffic officer who had arrested him was adamant that Lakhana had not yet paid the fine.

Lakhana was then escorted to the provincial traf-fic department’s office in town and detained from around 10:00 until after 14:00. He was only re-leased after he had paid the fine for the second time.

Upon his release he then lodged a complaint with the head of the department in town, Ms Shumani Labengwa. He was told to write a letter to the de-partment, asking for a refund, since he said he was not satisfied with the whole process.

“I am a happy man now that they refunded me on Monday (11 March),” said Lakhana earlier this week. “But I wasted my own money when I had to go to the office many times to sign papers. I understand that they refunded me, but I will never forget how the traffic office treated me.”

When first hearing about the story, Limpopo Mirror tried to elicit comment from the provincial spokesperson for the Department of Roads and Transport, Mr Joshua Kwapa. Mr Kwapa took more than two months before he managed to send his response. He claimed that “Mr Lekana (sic) was not forced to pay [the fine] for the second time. He was requested to go and collect proof of payment, unfortunately at the time he was requested he failed to comply”.

Mr Lakhana denied Mr Kwapa’s claims that he had not been complying. In the previous article which the newspaper carried, Lakhana is quoted saying: “These people [provincial traffic depart-ment’s office in Makhado] seem not to respect me. Look, I am a struggling businessman and going up and down to sign the same papers kills my business.”

The Richard Allen Young Adult Council (RAY-AC) under the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) in Vhembe, who have taken it upon themselves to improve the lives of their communities, opened up their hearts and ex-tended their love to disabled children once again.

They handed over a consignment of 150 blankets to needy pupils at Tshilidzini Special School in Shayandima on Friday.

The donation is part of their church’s mission of clothing those without clothes and feeding those without food.

After the handing over, the group had a good time playing games with the pupils.

“The management of the school made a request during one of our visits here. They asked for blan-kets and we felt that, as winter is approaching, we should make the necessary intervention. This is not the first donation we made here. Our women’s wing of the church donated some groceries to the children last year. We are like a family here,” said Ms Bridget Ravhuhali, the group’s president.

She said the church had a role to play in the

community. “We cannot only look after the spiritual side of

the human being; a person has bodily needs which should be met so he or she can lead a normal life, without which he would not be a complete being. We are taking care of the whole being as directed by the scriptures,” she said.

Ravhuhali said the blankets were not enough and that they would continue knocking on doors and searching their own pockets for all the children to get blankets.

On behalf of the school, an ecstatic Ms Phophi Mashabathakga said the donation was a blessing in disguise.

“Most of the children come from very poor fami-lies that cannot even afford shoes and uniforms. We are glad that the church thought of us at a time when winter is at our door step. Theirs is a living gospel, a gospel of actions and deeds. Even though we are still faced with many challenges as a school, we are very grateful,” she said.

Nine people who were travelling to the Beit Bridge border post en route to South Africa were left stranded after the driver of the car they were travelling in was fatally hit by a speeding car while he was trying to cross the road to buy watermelons.

The accident took place at a bus stop situated 30km out of the border town.

The incident occurred at Tshap-futshe village along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road on Sunday at around

18:20. Police spokesperson Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo said that soon after the incident, the motorist bolted out of his car, a Toyota Noah, and vanished into the bush.

The deceased was identified as Alfred Takayedza (42) of Gweru. He sustained severe head injuries and was taken to the Beit Bridge District Hospital, where he died on admission. The body was taken to the same hospital mortuary, pending a post mortem.

Ravele Highlanders will fight for Limpopo Dairy league points against Kutama Young Stars in their match that will be played at the Ravele grounds on Saturday (tomorrow).

Other Limpopo Dairy fix-tures are: Muraleni Young Re-bellions vs Madombidzha Try Again, Tshikodobo Barcelona vs Ramantsha, Gogobole Bucs vs Maebane Young Eagles, Ramantsha vs Midoroni Real Hearts, Muraleni United Broth-ers vs Manavhela Real Fight-ers, Benny’s Care vs Holy of Holies, Madombidzha Celtics vs Manavhela Black Aces, Mae-bane Peace Makers vs Gogobole Home Defenders, Ravele Black Dragons vs Muduluni Young Chiefs and Maebane Aces Unit-ed vs Makhitha Iyarunga.

Phungo All Stars proved that they really mean it when they say they want to escape relega-tion at the end of the season, when they managed to collect a vital league point away from home last weekend.

They held Mosesetjane All Stars to a 1-1 draw in their SAFA Second Division League match at the Mahwelereng Stadium on Saturday. All Stars are still lying at the bottom of the log, despite collecting a significant point away from home.

Not only did Winners Park de-posit full points into their league account, but they also registered

a historic score. They brutally walloped Baobab Zero Fake 8-2 in their one-sided match that was played at the Mahwelereng Sta-dium in Mokopane. The victory puts Winners Park at the top of the log with 46 points, four ahead of the second-placed Baroka FC.

Blue Rocks shared the glory with The Dolphins at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen. They played to a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon.

In their Polokwane derby at the Seshego Stadium, the newly promoted Ray Pillars gave Mighty FC no chance when they crushed them 3-1. Nobela All

continued to give away league points to their opponents. They lost 1-2 to one of the league title chasers, Magezi FC, at the Ses-hego Stadium.

Lephalale Young Killers strengthened their chances of escaping the relegation axe at the end of the season when they beat Modimolle Aces 2-0 at the Mogol Stadium in Lephalale. It was a war of the league title chasers when the second-placed Baroka FC played to a goalless draw with Basel FC at the Jane Furse Stadium. Rospa United lost 0-1 to Giyani Hotspurs at the Univen Stadium.

The struggle for promotion and to avoid relegation at the end of the season will con-tinue among the affiliates of the Vhembe SAB League this weekend.

It remains to be seen whether Musina Family United will be able to contain the pressure from the visitors, Madimbo Northern Fighters, at the Klopper Stadium in Musina on Sunday afternoon. Northern Fighters have a reputa-tion for giving their opponents a run for their money, even when they play away from home.

Although it will be a home match, Vhutalu Mountain Rangers will not find it easy to collect maximum points at the expense of Muhuyu Copper Stars, when they meet in their Thulfa match at the Vhutalu grounds tomorrow.

The other match that is ex-pected to draw a huge number of spectators will be between Matangari Young Vultures and Tshatshingo Potholes. It will be played at the Matangari grounds.

Time is running out for Dynamos FCTime is fast running out for Dynamos Football Club. With only 14 matches to go before the league activities for the current season come to an end, the once pride of Giyani are languishing at the bottom of the log of the National First Division.

Ri khomeni ri nga peli have so far managed to deposit only six points into their league ac-count, accumulated from 16 outings. They have won only one match and drawn three since the season started six months ago.

They are seven points behind

the second-last side, FCAK. To make the situation more hopeless for Dynamos, FCAK have a match in hand. The team’s head coach, Mr Owen da Gama, is still adamant that things will soon change for the better, saying it is still too early to talk about relegation as there are still more than 40 points to play for. Dynamos’ next match will be against Witbank Spurs, whom they will host at the Giyani Stadium next Saturday, March 30. Thanda Royal Zulu are leading the pack with 33 points gained from 16 matches. Thanda Royal Zulu are in a

neck-and-neck situation with Mpumalanga Black Aces, sepa-rated by a single point. African Warriors are lying in the third position with 27 points. The good thing about African War-riors is that they have played 15 matches, one fewer than the top two teams.

The other teams which stand a chance of qualifying for the promotional playoffs are San-tos, Witbank Spurs, Milano United FC and United FC. The relegation candidates are Dy-namos, FCAK, Roses United, Jomo Cosmos, Blackburn Rov-ers and FC Cape Town.

Dynamos Football Club.

Arrows donate points to Brothers

Matanda Golden Arrows were the first to score, but finally lost 1-3 to Tshifhire Northern Broth-ers in the Nzhelele stream of the Safa Vhembe SAB league at Matanda on Saturday.

The score was not a true reflection of the game, as Brothers were dictating terms in all departments throughout the game. The Maelula side should have taken the lead in the fifth minute, had it not been for the fact that Edgar Molewa shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Arrows were matching their opponents in every aspect of the match, but their stamina faded as the going became tough. Arrows took the lead in the 24th minute when Tshimangadzo Mav-hungu caught the Brothers keeper, Phathutshedzo Muanalo, off guard and blasted in a half volley from inside the box. Their celebration was cut short when Cerdick Booi dished a well-cooked pass to the speedy Tshepo Thovhakale, who scored easily two minutes later.

The Brothers took command of the game, in search of more goals. The pressure increased as the defenders continuously made mistakes. The guys who were giving the opponents' defence a terrible headache were Evans Mosipi and Tshepo Ramaremela.

The second goal for Brothers came in the 36th minute via Edgar Molewa. The half-time score was 2-1 in favour of Brothers.

Arrows made two re-placements early in the last half. Martin Phaswana and Phenyiso Phupheli came on for Mpho Galedzane and Thovhedzo Mugada respectively.

Awelani Mbulaheni scored his team's third goal from 20 meters away. He beat the offside trap and ran a few steps forward, before unleashing a powerful shot that saw the opponents’ keeper going the opposite direction.

Basel´s right back, Tshifhiwa Mmboi.

Basel ready to bury Young Killers aliveLephalale Young Killers will be lucky if, by chance, they manage to hold Basel FC to a draw when they meet in their Safa second division league match at the Makwarela Stadium tomor-row afternoon.

It will be a do-or-die match for Young Killers as they are fighting for survival in the second-last position on the log. On the other hand, Basel must win the match in order to remain in the league title race. They are currently lying in the third spot.

Basel proved they really mean business when they held the other league title contenders, Baroka FC, to a goalless draw at the latter’s home ground, the Jane Furse Stadium, last Saturday.

Young Killers will not find it easy to penetrate the defence of Basel, marshaled by Tshifhiwa Ramatsea and the former Kaizer Chiefs right back, Tshifhiwa Mmboi. The match is scheduled to start

at 15:00.In the other Safa second division matches that

will also be played tomorrow afternoon, the strug-gling Phungo All Stars will host Blue Rocks at the Makhado Eltivillas grounds. A win for Phungo All Stars will enhance their chances of surviving the relegation axe at the end of the season. They are currently languishing at the bottom of the log.

Nobela All Stars will entertain Ray Pillars at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium in Musina.

Rospa United will pay a visit to Baobab Zero Fake at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen. Giyani Hotspurs will host Baroka at the Giyani Stadium. The Dolphins and Winners Park will meet at the Seshego Stadium. Mosesetjane All Stars will test their strength against Mighty FC at the Peter Mokaba Athletics Stadium.

Sunday will see Modimolle Aces battle it out against Magezi FC at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle.FOR SALE

Brighton Mbombi of Hotspurs controls the ball after winning it from Kenneth Lesia.

Second consecutive defeat for Rospa UnitedLast Saturday saw Rospa United suffer their second consecutive defeat, follow-ing their 0-1 loss at the hands of Giyani Hotspurs in their Safa second division league match at the University of Venda Stadium.

United had themselves to blame for the defeat as they squandered numerous scor-ing opportunities throughout the game.

Spurs’ defender, Khulumani Hlung-wane, was the first play-er to be reprimanded with a card. He tackled Oscar Silima the rough way in the ninth min-ute and the Dzimauli-born referee, Mr Chris Mugeri, took no time before producing yel-low.

The coach of Hot-s p u r s , M r D e n n i s M a d z i m b a n e , w a s forced to effect a change to his starting lineup in the 20th minute. Khu-lumani Hlungwane sus-tained a groin injury and was replaced by his brother, Musa.

Khuthadzo Mathivha of United was also booked. He handled the ball intentionally and the referee was lenient enough not to give him

his marching orders.Kenneth Lesia of United caused an upset

in the 29th minute. He received a neat pass from Ndumeliso Mabulele within the box and shot upright, much to the disappoint-ment of the team’s fans.

Realising that Thulani Masondo’s performance was deteriorating with time, Hotspurs replaced him with Amos Malane early in the last half. Malane formed a

deadly combination with Douglas Mal-uleke and Lebogang Tsholo in the middle of the park.

Spurs’ much-awaited goal came in the 78th minute. Musa Hlungwane headed home after a corner kick that was taken by Akane Banda.

Rospa United tried everything in the book in their search for the equaliser, but it was not their day.

In an effort to make residents more aware of Sa-mango monkeys in the Soutpansberg, residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) can now buy an I BRAKE FOR SAMANGO MONKEY sticker.

As part of her PhD research into Samango mon-keys, Mrs Bibi Linden says she has received great support from residents all over the Soutpansberg.

“Recent reports also included two Samango monkey road kills on the Thohoyandou road,” Lin-den says. She added that reports indicate that these monkeys seem to be crossing this road regularly on a 30km-long stretch between the Piesanghoek turn-off and the second Levubu turn-off further east.

“It was also reported to me that Samangos infre-quently cross the Vivo road in the western part of the Soutpansberg. In response to this, and based on the fact that Samango monkeys are nationally listed as 'vulnerable' and are considered a rare species, I started a local awareness camping as part of my research,” Linden says.

As part of the campaign, Leach Printers spon-sored two road signs (which will be mounted on the Thohoyandou road, warning drivers about the crossing of Samangos) and bumper stickers with the slogan “I BRAKE FOR SAMANGO MONKEYS”.

“I am asking local people to support Samango monkey conservation actively by purchasing a Samango monkey bumper sticker. By putting stickers on the back of a car, people are making a public statement and are also educating fellow drivers,” Linden says.

Stickers can be purchased directly from Linden or at OK Grocer at the tobacco counter for a nomi-nal fee of R2. Revenues and donations will be used

for continuing and growing the Sa-mango monkey awareness campaign.

“It is important for me to collect information about where exactly Samangos are crossing roads to focus conservation efforts in those areas. In this regard, I appreciate any reports of where exactly people see Samangos crossing or see dead Samangos on a road. Although a very sad incidence,

a Samango killed by a car allows me to collect a variety of data, such as tissue samples for DNA analysis,” Linden says.

Samango sightings can be reported to Linden at Tel 071 105 8117, or by email at [email protected] or [email protected]

Young children urged to participate in all sports

The Vhembe District Municipality’s head of special programmes, Cllr Constance Mphaphuli, presents the winner´s trophy to Ms Florence Sambo, chairperson of Vhembe Early Childhood Development.

More than 300 pupils from pre-schools and crèches from municipalities in the Vhembe District took part in the annual Vhembe District Children's Sports Day Competition at the Makwarela Stadium on Friday.

Some of the activi-ties in which the chil-dren competed were tyre pushing, relay and big bag. The winners in each category were awarded with certifi-cates of participation and trophies, while the overall winner was given a floating trophy. Thulamela crèches and pre-schools emerged as the overall winners.

Cllr Constance Mp-haphuli, head for spe-cial programmes in the Vhembe District Mu-nicipality, urged young children to take part in different sporting codes, as one can make a liv-ing from excelling in sports. Mphaphuli said when the young children

are participating in various sports, they are helping to build their bodies to stay healthy and strong. According to her, sports also promotes leadership skills as crèches and pre-schools children are the leaders of tomorrow. The chairperson of

Vhembe Early Childhood Development, an umbrella organisation for crèches and pre-schools in Vhembe, Ms Florence Sambo, was extremely happy to find out that the young pupils were excited and enthusiastic to take part in sports.

Robbery at Gogobole

Young Chiefs and Vhembe FET in draw

The Tshilwavhusiku police are investigating a case of armed robbery after an incident where four armed men allegedly robbed a local shop of an undisclosed amount of cash.

The incident took place on 7 March at Gogobole Village in the Sinthumule area.

According to the spokesperson for the Tshil-wavhusiku police, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, four unknown suspects entered the shop. They were wearing masks and threatened the shop assistant with a firearm. They then commanded him to lie face down on the floor.

“They demanded the money and the shop as-sistant’s cellphone before leaving the shop,” Const Marindi said.

Marindi requested members of the community who might have information which may lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects to contact the nearest police station.

In their SAB League match that was played at the Makwarela Stadium on Sun-day afternoon, Vhembe FET College and Ngwenani Young Chiefs shared the glory with a 2-2 draw.

The absence of Rudolph Sithole in the starting lineup for the FET was evident from the first whistle.

The strikers rarely received some pre-cooked passes as there was nobody to win and distrib-

ute the balls to the goal poach-ers. No goal was seen during the first half, despite numerous attempts by both sides.

The students from the FET college were the first to blow the trumpet. Their goal came in the 46th minute. Pfano Rambani, who came on as a substitute for Dakalo Nedzinga, was on target after some dual moves with Tshifhiwa Mphadzha. Young Chiefs retaliated two minutes afterwards. Ndivhuwo

Khwashaba beat the offside trap and showed the keeper, Rhulani Sambo, the wrong way.

Vhembe introduced Pfunzo Razwimisani and Talifhani Matange for Stanley Tshidade and Mpheni Razwimisani re-spectively in the 64th minute. The replacements proved to be a clever move on the part of the technical team as they took the lead again soon afterwards.

Pfano Rambani headed home after a square pass from

Tshifhiwa Mphadzha. Young Chiefs did not just stand aside and look; instead, they re-placed their keeper, Tshimangadzo Mu-lovhedzi, with Ali Themeli.

The referee, Mr Joseph Mammba, warned Thili Rat-shibvumo of Young Chiefs with a card in the 74th minute.

This after he had kicked the keeper of Vhembe, Rhulani Sambo, in the chest.

Young Chiefs were awarded a penalty in the 78th minute. A defender of Vhembe handled within the box and Mammba did not hesitate to point at the spot. Thili Rat-shibvumo made no mistake and the final score was 2-2.

Makwarela Development Stars continued to pave their way up when they beat Phandulalu-valo FC 3-2 in their SAB League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday.

Phandulaluvalo looked hopeless from the onset and their strikers showed no appetite for goals. The hosts capitalised on this and scored two goals within the first 20 minutes of the game. Their opening goal came when the game was 12 minutes old. Aubrey Tshishonga found the net, following a brilliant pass by Muvhofhololi Mudanalwo.

The Stars threatened to score again in the 15th minute. Nthangeni Makungo went loose from the left corner and shot wide from close range with the keeper already beaten. Makungo made amends in the 18th minute when he beat the offside trap and scored easily.

The only time Phandulaluvalo came close to scoring in the first half was when Walter Nemus-hungwa faced the lone keeper and shot wide from inside the box nine minutes before the break. Development Stars were still leading 2-0 when the teams adjourned for half time.

Phandulaluvalo reduced the deficit by one in the 49th minute. Walter Nemushungwa forced his way through the defence of Stars and unleashed a ground cutter. The keeper of Stars, Dakalo Muk-wevho, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net.

The home side increased the margin through Nthangeni Makungo. He tapped in the ball after a scramble within the box. A defender of Stars, Tshililo Mufamadi, handled the ball within the box and the referee awarded a penalty to Phandu-laluvalo. Mueletshedzi Mudau, who came on as a substitute, converted from the white spot to bring the full-time score to 3-2.
