“The Island of Tears” was what Italians coming to America coined as the name for Ellis Island. They were an impoverished group of people with hardly any belongings. Many were lucky to have their families with them.

Many Italians often resented the fact that they had to leave their homeland. Since the immigrants were poor and lost the land they cultivated in Italy, they were forced to assimilate to life in America.

Refers to the name of the Sicilian Mafia which emerged in Sicily during the mid 19th century.

The American mafia followed suit during the late 19th century following waves of emigration from Sicily.
