BUSINESS PROFILE:

THE WAY NATURE INTENDED

A free-spirited sense of adventure led the Hooper family to the wild, windswept shores of Cape Jaffa, where they established Cape Jaffa Wines in 1993. Struck by the sense of isolation along one of Australia’s most pristine stretches of coastline, they saw the potential of the rich, untouched terroir, creating a vineyard in harmony with the environment…and life.

Anna and Derek Hooper take a very hands-on approach to their winemaking, and are also very passionate about sustainable practices and integrate this into the daily running of Cape Jaffa Wines.

“A policy of minimal intervention and old-world winemaking techniques is taken on board to preserve the regional fruit characters in our biodynamic wines.” explains Derek

Cape Jaffa’s modern and innovative winery is certified by Australian Certified Organic as a biodynamic processing facility. Winemaking operations are timed to coincide with the events of the biodynamic activity calendar. Harvest dates, rackings and finings are also governed by this

schedule. The use of artificial fining agents is avoided, using natural milk products to fine white wines and hand-separated egg whites to fine reds.

Trailbreakers rather than traditionalists, the Hoopers have made their own way, creating seriously good biodynamic wine filled with personality and good cheer. Hard work, passion and professionalism is poured into every vintage, helped along by morning surfs, crayfish, beach walks and bonfires.

Cape Jaffa Wines calls it the ‘maritime influence’.

It’s the way nature intended.

And it’s a lifestyle worth bottling.

“We chose Cape Jaffa because of what we saw and what we felt. There was no track record, so we had to go by feeling,” said Derek Hooper

From the beginning, Mayura Station has been one of those magical places where dreams come true.

In 1845, the Limestone Coast property was granted one of South Australia’s first pastoral leases, sending early pioneers Samuel Davenport and George Glen on the path to prosperity. During this period, the property extended from Tantanoola to Rendelsham, but by 1870 a section of the farmland had been surveyed and transformed into the township of ‘Millicent”, named after Millicent Short, the daughter of the first Anglican Archbishop of Adelaide.

Fast forward to well over a century later, and it seems history has repeated itself, with humble beginnings leading to more big things. Mayura Station has been owned by the de Bruin family since the early 1980’s.

The cattle were imported from Mr Shogo Takeda, one of Japan’s premier black-haired Wagyu farmers, and their arrival in Australia marked a significant milestone in the nation’s cattle-producing history. After beginning with a herd of 29 Full-blood Wagyu cattle, Mayura Station is now home to one of Australia’s largest Full-blood (100%) Wagyu cattle herds and one of Australia’s most awarded Premium beef brands, winning gold medals at Australia’s national produce awards in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and in 2014 Best Steak Restaurant at the SA Restaurant & Catering awards for excellence.

In 1998, the property took delivery of the second ever live shipment of full-blood Japanese black-haired Wagyu, world renowned as the highest quality beef producing cattle.

BUSINESS PROFILE:

A FAMILY TRADITION

Passion, dedication and commitment to excellence, best describes the remarkable story of Coonawarra’s Zema family.

In 1959 Demetrio Zema arrived in Coonawarra from Italy to marry his fiancée, Francesca. With a great passion for wine and a family tradition of grape growing that spans generations, Demetrio found that Coonawarra could provide him with the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong ‘dream’ of producing his own world class wines.

The dream became a reality in 1982 when Demetrio and Francesca, with two sons Nick and Matt, purchased a small block of mature vines on the prized terra rossa soil in the heart of Coonawarra, South Australia.

The first vintage of Zema Estate wines was made with very little equipment, a tin shed and an old milk tanker under the generous guidance of veteran Coonawarra Winemaker Mr. Ken Ward.

Twenty five years on, Zema Estate has gained a national and international reputation as one of Australia’s pre-eminent wine producers. This success is largely attributed to the consistency of the wines and the family’s commitment to traditional vineyard practices; of dry land viticulture and hand pruning – methods which produce intense, rich fruit of the highest quality.

Zema Estate wines will impress. They are beautifully balanced with excellent varietal definition and vibrant rich fruit. Visit the Zema family at their new Cellar Door and/or visit www.zema.com.au for a full listing of stockists.

Passion, dedication and commitment to excellence, best describes the remarkable story of Coonawarra’s Zema family.

The concept of a Farmers’ and Makers’ Market is not a new one. Farmers have bartered and sold goods as far back in history as agriculture itself. Today it is generally accepted by most Farmers’ and Makers’ Markets that stall holders must have grown, bred, caught, pickled, brewed, smoked or baked the goods themselves.

Limestone Coast Food Farmers’ and Makers’ Markets share with its producers and stakeholders a commitment to providing local and quality fresh produce of an affordable nature to the local community.

Our Farmers’ and Makers’ Markets are held at various times through the year all over The Limestone Coast Region. A great range of local produce is always on display for tasting and sales. Come in and fill your baskets to overflowing with the freshest of the best produce. The fabulous smallgoods and indigenous meats and spices will excite the senses. Home baked goodies including
