This Fall catalogue has many new and exciting classes in each of our eight departments. It is filled with over 200 classes and workshops for both adults and children. Feel free to contact one of our class advisors with any questions you may have about classes, workshops or our policies. We continually strive to improve our customer service and want to make sure you have a positive experience starting from the registration process to the last day of your class.

Over the last two years we have added and built beautiful new spaces in the neighborhood to expand and grow our programming. With the addition of our Drawing & Painting Studios, we now have a total of 25 classrooms. Our welcoming event space, Lillstreet Loft, is a 2000+ sq. ft. studio perfect for corporate retreats and teambuilding. The space is also available for benefits, parties, artist lectures and private events.

As Lillstreet grows and changes, some things will always remain the same. Our original mission to support artists and students with the best facilities, teachers and generous open studio time continues.

I invite you to explore all that Lillstreet Art Center has to offer. Make the time to come in and browse our gallery, our classrooms and the Loft, or just stop by for some delicious food, pie, or coffee at our café.

NOT SURE WHERE TO START? Explore a new medium in a no pressure environment. Each of our adult departments offers five week introductory classes for beginning students with no previous experience. Get comfortable with the basics before you decide on a full-length class. Some materials are included and you will have access to open studio during your class session.

Advanced students can fine tune their work or experiment with soda firing. THE LOW-FIRE HANDBUILT SURFACE(10 WEEKS)

Use handbuilding techniques to make functional work that tells your story. Learning new surface techniques such as mishima, sgraffito, monoprinting and transfers. We will explore the pot’s ability to transcend function and become a canvas for your ideas. We will work with low-fire terra cotta and terra sigillata, ancient materials that have been telling stories throughout history. Using historical and modern pots as reference, each student will make cups, bowls and plates that share his or her own narrative.

METAL MEETS CLAY(10 WEEKS)

Create functional or sculptural works by combining metal and clay. Students will be shown a variety of techniques in both mediums and are encouraged to develop their own ideas. In ceramics, basic handbuilding techniques such as coiling, pinching, constructing slabs and finishing will be covered. In metals, students will be introduced to saw piercing, cold connections, light torch work and basic forging techniques. EXPLORING HIGH-FIRE GLAZES: THE JOURNEY CONTINUES(10 WEEKS)

What makes a glaze? Learn a simple test that you can use to explore glaze materials, test existing glaze formulas or create new glazes. Find out the secrets to copper red, rutile blue, shino, and celadon glazes. Learn how to manipulate glaze formulas to achieve the look you want and create a glaze to use in your own work. Discover what makes up a stain or a slip then create your own. Explore what happens to a glaze in the kiln using the Unity formula and glaze calculation software in creating new glazes and making triaxial blends.

Be prepared for flashes of color, textured surfaces and the excitement of unpredictable results utilizing the distinct atmospheric qualities of the soda kiln. Making pots for the soda kiln and weekly wheelthrowing or handbuilding demonstrations will increase your knowledge of more complex forms. Through the use of soda slips and glazes, the soda firing process becomes accessible and understandable. Examine the overlooked or misunderstood tools in your clay toolbox while learning how to make custom implements out of household items. Who knows how to sculpt you better than you? In this class students will be their own model. Working with a mirror and photographs students will create a life-sized portrait of themselves. Special attention will be given to anatomy, skeletal structure and facial expression. Upon completion of your self portrait you will learn how to prepare your work for kiln firing.

Turn the dials. Watch red heat glow. See the green flame. Learn the fundamentals of firing Lillstreet’s Bailey kilns by firing your own and others’ glazed work. MEXICAN DAY OFTHE DEAD SKULLS(1 DAY)

A Calaveras or skull is commonly used for decoration during the Mexican Day of the Dead festival on November 1st. They are frequently shown with marigold flowers and foliage and are generally depicted as joyous rather than mournful to indicate a happy afterlife. The Mexican belief is that no dead soul likes to be thought of sadly, and that death should be a joyous occasion.

MASKS(1 DAY)

The mask is an object worn over or in front of the face to hide the identity of a person and by its own features to establish another being. As cultural objects they have been used throughout the world in all periods and have been as varied in appearance as in their use and symbolism. Working with your own facial proportions, students will design a mask specific to their face. Decorations may be added to your mask with additional clay and then painted with glaze.

SHAPING CLAY,SHAPING LIFE(1 DAY)

Draw on the healing and calming aspects of working with clay to deal with personal traumas and affirm the value of your core self. In this workshop, you will be guided to make stoneware rock shapes to honor your pain history and porcelain objects to celebrate your inner beauty. The vision is to create an art installation based on the pieces from several such workshops around Chicago that will transform individual experiences of trauma and hope into a collective expression of healing. The rock shapes will form a memorial cairn.

In ancient times, cairns were used both as markers of a path and as places of burial. The lighter porcelain objects will be re-fired with a touch of gold luster and hung from filaments to form a luminous cloud.

The installation of Cairn and Cloud is planned for 2015. Participants will be invited to attend the exhibit opening reception.

Have you ever wanted to recycle parts from an old piece of jewelry, use an object you found and collected or add meaning to the jewelry you make? We will use traditional techniques to incorporate found objects through layering, collage and assemblage for a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry. Through hands-on investigations, students can incorporate wood, raw stones, fabric, paper, photographs, plastics or found objects of any kind. Resin, riveting, tab and prong set are a few of the connections that will be discussed. Students should come to the first class with objects they want to work with.

This comprehensive course is for beginners to chainmaille and it covers several basic weaves, along with tips for “speedweaving.” You’ll see many samples and explore how slight variations change the look of the weave. Students will receive enough jump rings for 5 bracelets and full-color step-by-step tutorials for each weave. We will work with aluminum, copper, jewelry brass, and anodized aluminum.

Instructor will bring pliers to use in class.

This course covers the following weaves: Double Spiral, European 4-in-1, Byzantine, Japanese 12-in-2 and Jens Pind Linkage 3.

This updated version of the popular barrel weave uses seed beads that lie diagonally, causing the weave to appear slanted throughout. Alla Prima is a wet-on-wet, all at once process. It is a way of seeing, as much as it is a method. Arashi shibori is a resist dye technique that yields diagonal patterns. The term “arashi” suggests driving rains in a heavy storm. Work alongside classmates as you wrap and dye natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk, bamboo, rayon and wool. Start from basic arashi wrapping with string to more complex patterns and variations such as spider web shibori, willow shibori, bomaki shibori and more. For the invested dyer, this exploratory course will move through the range of chemical dye processes and techniques through a series of weekly workshops. Use fusible web adhesives to cut and paste or “quick” applique designs and imagery onto various cloths and materials. SASHIKO STITCHING(1 DAY)

Historically, women in Japan collected fabrics and stitched them together to make their families’ clothes and interior decorations. The stitched cloth was a reflection of personal stories expressing their lives. Join the instructor as she presents images of inspiration of Sashiko with books, samples and a presentation of work utilizing the technique. Participate in a blind stitching exercise that is a quick and intuitive approach to needlework. This will be followed by adding intricate stitches with materials from a Japanese Sashiko kit (provided by the instructor). Students will leave the retreat with some newfound knowledge of this historical artform and a take home project to keep their hands busy.

Get crafty and use your imagination to create cute plush monsters. Choose fuzzy, shiny or scratchy fabrics then use stuffing, buttons and some hand embroidery to make your monster come to life. We will sketch out our designs, name our monsters and continue to develop fine motor skills as you sew it up.

Learn the printing process from beginning to end. Students will coat and expose their aluminum screens using photo-emulsion and our vacuum exposure unit. Each week designs will be printed onto your choice of T-shirts, bags, or fabrics that can be used for iron on patches and other sewing projects. Screens and inks provided, and a resource list for fabric materials will be provided by instructor on the first day.

Explore collagraphs: plates made by collaging materials together to create background textures and direct compositions. The resulting plates can be sealed and printed. Monotypes encourage creative freedom in the printmaking medium. This class will teach students to combine painterly monotype techniques with printed wood type elements. Type can be used as legible words or as graphic icons. Instruction in reductive and additive techniques, stencils, pressure prints and type to plate registration will be included. MULTILEVEL INTAGLIO AND RELIEF(10 WEEKS)

Explore traditional methods of intaglio printmaking including hard and soft ground etching, aquatint, drypoint, engraving, monotype and monoprint. In addition, students will be guided through methods for woodblock relief printing. Topics will include woodblock preparation and cutting as well as press and handprinting procedure.

Learn to carve linoleum blocks to make relief prints and create one of a kind monoprints. Detailed instruction on tools, cutting techniques, and the translation of ideas into print will be covered. Make an elegant, exposed-spine, easy-open sketchbook. Students will hand tear, fold paper, cover boards with decorative paper or cloth and sew to create a custom sketchbook. an all-day team meeting complete with an art activity. To energize the team, lillstreet came up with fun creative exercises.

Gwen Zabicki, Lillstreet Ignite Facilitator and painting instructor, led the workshop. One activity was a game of still-life

musical chairs. Participants rotated every few minutes to a new vantage point, each adding to a drawing started by a

coworker. The end result was a series of collaborative still-life drawings.

Another activity assigned one person the task of describing an object while another drew it based only on the description.

The project required careful listening, clear communication and a healthy dose of good humor!

SASHIKO STITCHINGHistorically women in Japan collected fabrics and stitched them together to make their families’ clothes and interior decorations. The stitched cloth was a reflection of personal stories expressing their lives. Join the instructor as she presents images of inspiration of Sashiko with books, samples and a presentation of work utilizing the technique. Participate in a blind stitching exercise that is a quick and intuitive approach to needlework. This will be followed by adding intricate stitches with materials from a Japanese Sashiko kit. Students will leave the retreat with some newfound knowledge of this historical artform and a take home project to keep their hands busy.

ASIAN INK PAINTINGLearn the art of Asian sumi-e ink painting and the symbolism behind it. Spend time experimenting with basic sumi-e brush strokes and techniques. Each participant will create several small paintings of the traditional Asian flora bamboo, plum blossom, chrysanthemum and orchid. Then use your new brush stroke skills and apply them to silk to create your own colorful hand painted silk scarf. Retreat begins with a guided meditation session.

MURAL MEMOIR RETREATSpend a day reflecting on childhood memories with Chicago cartoonist and writer Nicole Hollander. Quick charcoal drawing exercises will encourage stream-of-consciousness thinking. Ideas and images generated throughout the day will be used to create a finished large-scale graphic mural memoir on paper.

Work in our adult Textile Studios learning the printing process from beginning to end. Students will coat and expose their aluminum screens using photo-emulsion and our vacuum exposure unit. Each week designs will be printed onto your choice of t-shirts, bags, or fabric that can be used for iron on patches and other sewing projects. Screens and inks provided, and a resource list for fabric materials will be provided by instructor on the first day.

Watch a photoshoot come alive with Cinemagraphs, a hybrid of video and high-end photography pioneered by fashion photographers Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg. Students will learn to set up a basic photo/video shoot to gather content and create stunning images with a hint of motion.

REGISTER EARLY! CLASSES FILL QUICKLY. We strongly encourage you to preregister to ensure a space in class. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. HOLIDAYS AND MISSED CLASSES For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from Lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDSPLEASE READ CAREFULLY

CANCELLATIONSClasses are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSESAND WORKSHOPSTuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative Retreats and Visiting Artist Workshops have separate cancellation policies. PRIVATE CLASSESWould you prefer individualized instruction over a classroom situation? Is there a specific technique you’ve always wanted to learn, but don’t have the time to commit to a 10 week class? If this is what you’ve been looking for we have some options for you to choose from.

• A two-hour minimum commitment is required.

• Your customized lesson can be for one person, two or three.

• No previous experience necessary.

• Private classes can be set up in any of our departments.

• Your lesson includes open studio time on the day of your lesson only; it does not include open studio for the week.
