With over 125 classes and numerous workshops offered, our Early Winter programming has something for everyone. From family activities to our wildly popular blown glass ornament workshops, we have the class for you.

Let There Be Light, our 39th annual Holiday Show & Sale, runs November 21 - January 4, 2015 with a “kick off” reception on Friday, November 21 from 6-10pm. This festive time at Lillstreet features an exhibition, jewelry trunk shows every weekend and a large selection of artisan gifts in our gallery shop. In addition, we’re proud to host our 3rd annual Holiday Art Fair November 21 & 22 featuring 60 artists selling ceramics, jewelry, hats & scarves, prints & notecards and much more.

THE LOW FIRE HANDBUILT SURFACE (5 WEEKS)

Use handbuilding techniques to make functional work that tells a story. Learn new surface techniques such as mishima, sgraffito, monoprinting and transfers. Explore the pot’s ability to transcend function and become a canvas for your ideas. Work with low fire terra cotta and terra sigillata. Using historical and modern pots as a reference, each student will make cups, bowls and plates that share his or her own narrative.

How objects or forms exist together is as important as how each was individually crafted. Creating a scenario or scene with multiples can give each object its own personality. We will examine how ceramic forms interact with one another and create our own still lifes. Our focus is the play on shape and form rather than function.

If you have basic throwing skills and want to learn about handbuilding, this is the class for you. Use clay to explore the meaning of the year’s longest night, when, in the northern hemisphere, increasing darkness changes to increasing light. Consider how people around the world have marked the significance of the winter solstice and shape a special object for personal use. We will use these objects in our own celebration during the final class.

THE BOTTLE FORM (5 WEEKS)

The bottle form captures the eye and the imagination. It can be masculine or feminine in nature, functional or decorative and can appear to float or stand firm. The challenge in making the bottle form is to gain height, finesse proportion and create a beautiful silhouette. This class will push your throwing skills and train your eye on every detail, instilling technique that will carry over to any other wheel-thrown form.

Focus on developing skills in ceramic work to be finished in a soda fired kiln. A range of techniques will be demonstrated, from altering wheel thrown forms to constructing with slabs. Discussions and exploration of soda fired surfaces, including the use of soda specific slips and glazes will aid in our discovery. Students will participate in all stages of the process including required kiln loading and unloading outside of class time. Alla Prima is a wet-on-wet, all at once process. It is a way of seeing, as much as it is a method. BURN OUT(3 WEEKS)

Devoré, coming from the French verb dévorer, means to devour. This technique literally burns away components of the textile while leaving others intact, resulting in a cloth that is at once transparent and opaque. Motifs can be painted or printed directly onto the cloth for a variety of lace or screen effects. Students will be introduced to burn out techniques and explore a variety of applications. This hands-on intensive will move through a variety of yarn dyeing techniques ranging from the traditional to the experimental. Learn about your camera and take better pictures as we explore digital photography. Start with the essential camera controls like ISO, aperture, shutter speed, shooting modes, and focus. Put these lessons into practice with some in class exercises. Discuss composition and how to shoot thematically. Round out the class with a demonstration of editing images using Lightroom software and printing basics. REGISTER EARLY! CLASSES FILL QUICKLY. We strongly encourage you to preregister to ensure a space in class. Registration is accepted on a first-come, first-served basis with a 50% deposit required. Workshops must be paid in full at time of registration. Balance is due on the first day of class. Lillstreet accepts payments by VISA, Master Card, American Express or Discover. HOLIDAYS AND MISSED CLASSES For classes that fall on holidays, it is up to individual teachers and students to decide whether to hold the class or to schedule a make up class later in the session. Missed classes may only be made up within the same class session.

TOOLS AND MATERIALS Students may be required to purchase a tool kit from Lillstreet, or other materials in order to complete class work. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be provided for the first class session and students will receive a supply list for purchase.

CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDSPLEASE READ CAREFULLY

CANCELLATIONSClasses are canceled when enrollment minimums are not reached. Students will be notified if classes are canceled and will be eligible for a full refund or class credit. Tuition credits are good indefinitely toward any classes, workshops or gallery items and are not redeemable for cash under any circumstances.

REFUND POLICY FOR DROPPED CLASSESAND WORKSHOPSTuition is refundable for all classes and workshops dropped more than one week prior to the session start date, minus a $40 processing fee. Classes dropped during the week prior to the start of the class session are eligible for a studio credit only (no refunds). Classes dropped during the first week of the session are eligible for a 50% studio credit (no refund). Classes dropped after the first week of the session are not eligible for a credit or refund except in cases of documented medical emergency with physician’s note. Students are responsible for notifying the Lillstreet staff that they wish to drop a class or workshop. Not attending class does not constitute an official withdrawal or cancellation of tuition or fees. Creative Retreats and Visiting Artist Workshops have separate cancellation policies.
