Education and Outreach

An Overview on GriPhyN and iVDGL Outreach

EAC Meeting (Jan 2003) LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 2

LIGO-G020001-00-Z

E/O mission in GriPhyN/iVDGL

• Integrated effort to communicate the ideas of the computational and data grids to a diverse community of faculty and students (at all levels) as well as the public at large.

• Direct participation of minority serving institutions (MSI) into grid related research via the inclusion of Tier 3 centers.

Leveraging existing E/O programs

Examples: • Skyserver Classes at SCK• Skyserver talk at SC2002 EOT PACI meeting• Trillium Newsletter 2002• Regular telecom, mailing and E/O meeting

UTB coordinator: Successful collaboration with EOT-PACI (Roscoe Giles & Scott Lathrop), SDSS Skyserver (Jordan Raddick) and PPDG (Ruth Pordes) to link our E/O activities.

Year 2002 …

• Continue collaboration with PPDG, EOT-PACI, Skyserver…etc• Start collaboration QuarkNet (HU)

Getting all Tier 3 Centers in the grid …

• UTB: » Experience in clustering and grid software (VDT, Worldgrid

etc) installation and demos. Coordinate activities and provide help to all Tier 3 centers. NASA URC funds to construct a new 64-node Linux cluster bringing additional students involved in grid-related research.

• HU:» A 4-node Linux cluster has been constructed by CS and

physics undergraduate students. Ongoing Worldgrid installation. Organize a new E/O meeting in spring 2003 with participation of COSM center and iVDGL Tier 3 students.

• SKC:» Started the design of a 32-node Linux iVDGL cluster

involving CS and Physics professors and undergraduate students. Tim Olson plans to visit UTB in spring 2003.

Increasing the participation of students

Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU): Proposal for a REU supplement from NSF to support 10 to

20 undergraduate students doing grid-related research during semesters or summer at several GriPhyN/iVDGL Institutions. In order to achieve this goal we need to know:» Mentors» Research Projects» Selection Procedures» Budgets

Interested mentoring Institutions: 1. Florida U (Paul Avery), 2. Indiana U (James Williams, John Hicks), 3. Fermilab (Ruth Pordes), 4. Chicago (Ian Foster, Tom Garritano), 5. UW Milwaukee (Bruce Allen), 6. UT Brownsville (Manuela Campanelli).

At least 2 students per Institution!
