Lighting and sound system technol-ogy is a science nowadays and unless you’re an audiophile, choosing the right set-up can be overwhelming. Under-standing which equipment is right for you is vital to avoid mistakes. That’s where we come in. This section will help you make the best choice of speaker for your religious organisation’s needs.

An important first decision is whether to opt for active or passive speakers. There are pros and cons to both types.

Active (Powered) Speakers

Powered speakers have an amplifier built into the enclosure. They are effectively plug-and-play devices. This makes them attractive when ease of transport and set-up is at a premium because everything is contained in one box. This type of arrange-ment is ideal for delivering speeches from a podium and for public announcements. Yet such set-ups are versatile—many have the facility to connect directly to micro-phones and music devices. Most active speakers tend to be made out of ABS, keeping the unit weight down and enhancing their easy to use reputation.Due to space restrictions within your place of worship you may be unable to dedicate a permanent area to house your sound equipment. If so, you might find the simplic-ity of active speakers works for you.

Passive Speakers

Passive speakers require a separate ampli-fier to work and are generally made of wood which is more resonant than the ABS plastics used in active speakers. Passive speaker and power amp combinations work exceed-ingly well in venues or touring rigs as they

are ideal for physically isolating amplifica-tion from the speakers themselves. Usually, when using sub bass or multiple speakers, additional components such as equalisers and crossovers are required to ensure the best sound quality for a particular room.

Our power amps are minimalist in appear-ance and unlike those used in domestic hi-fi situations. They may simply have a volume knob for each channel on the front, and some operational electronics in the back. This type of set-up can prove very power-ful as some amps are rated to thousands of watts per channel.

If loud volume is what you’re after, look to our range of passive speakers with compat-ible amplifiers—these will be louder. If sound quality is your bag then your choice may

come down to personal taste. Most audio-philes argue that passive speakers have a more pleasing sound. Passive speakers with a separate amp are a great alternative for more sophisticated con-ditions—at venues for instance which feature multi-channel concerts, plays, and bands.

Which to Choose?

Your final decision should be based on personal need. However, we recommend moving toward an arrangement comprising passive speakers with amplifiers if space permits as that will give you the best sound quality. Such a set up offers long term ver-satility, no matter what the purpose.

Passive or Active Speakers – What is best for my organisation?

Passive Speaker Solutions

Picking the right speaker size depends on the size of the hall and audience. The smaller speakers (8”-12”) have better sound reproduc-tion in the high frequencies which are great for speeches, singing and instruments. They are usually recommended to be combined with a Subwoofer to improve the low end (thumping) especially if you are planning to play music with a strong beat. 15” speakers are a good all-rounder and are typically louder than the smaller sizes. They don’t need a sub as they already feature reasonable low end frequency performance. However they are not as clear for speeches and singing. There are 2 series of passive speakers depending on your budget and preference.

Active Speaker Solutions

Most active speakers are plastic moulded and are designed for visual appeal and port-ability. The Titan range is one of the most reli-able and well-accepted Pro Audio brands in Australia. It is almost impossible for the driver on a Titan speakers to be overdriven as these speakers feature an inbuilt Qubit Proces-sor which prevents the frequencies entering the speaker from damaging the driver. This makes these speakers incredibly reliable.

Wireless microphonesWireless mic frequencies have changed from January 2015 onwards due to the onset of digital TV channels. All wire-less products from Lightsounds fit within the regulated frequency range allowed for such devices. If you have old exist-ing wireless mics it is very likely that the range on those devices is no longer allowed. A safe frequency spectrum for wireless audio devices is 520–694MHz.

Engage Your Audience With Professional LightingHumans are naturally visual beings. The effect of Colour and Movement can make a huge difference in hightening the intensity of their experience. Adding Professional quality lighting to your activities can attract more people to your events; from speeches and sermons delivered by one man, to full scale musical performances by large choirs and bands.

The good news is that, renting or buying lighting has become more affordable and convenient. We can create simple or so-phisticated—but always impressive—light-ing effects on a modest budget.

1. Who’s in the Spotlight?

Spotlights are used to light individual performers—a principal speaker or singer perhaps. However, if your intention is to move the focus of your event from one per-son to another, additional spotlights can be used to re-direct your audience’s attention. Spotlights do not have to be white. Where mood is important, shades of amber or warm white can be used to suit the emo-tional effect you want to create (Red is great for a ‘fiery’ performance).

One par can is okay but ideally we’d recommend using two or three for a small performance to light your focal point from more than one angle. For optimal perfor-mance, lighting stands should be used to ensure that spotlights are between one and two and a half metres from the ground.

2. Backdrop Lighting

A stage will generally have a back wall. You can take advantage of this by project-ing a backdrop onto the wall. Or illumi-nating the wall to match the mood of the activity. Par cans make it possible to wash the backdrop with a single colour or with a pre-programmed sequence of colours. Brighter and more interesting effects are available. For example, we can provide a system which allows you to project rotating and changing shapes onto a wall. This

option is more expensive but you can hire rather than buy, keeping the cost down.

3. Mood and Drama

Different colours can completely change the mood and intensity of an event. Blue or violet create a dramatic effect. While colours like amber or red add energy. The light source is usually a par can or a wash LED Bar. These can be placed in different locations depending on the desired effect. Where you have a number of people on stage, take care to ensure that the person your audience should be attending to is always washed by a brighter colour than everyone else. If your activity doesn’t single out an individual, we recommend that you highlight everyone on stage with a brighter and contrasting colour to the background lighting.

Lighting Control optionsMost lighting controllers rely on a protocol called DMX. DMX allows individual functions of a light to be controlled by an external controller. Functions such as colour, bright-ness, blackout, gobo (projected shapes, e.g. in moving heads), XY movement (where applicable) are examples of what you can control via an external DMX controller. DMX is not a necessary feature in a light unless you have a larger number of lights to control simultaneously or if you need to control the exact movement of more complex lighting fixtures such as moving heads.

Fog machines vary in power depending on the amount of smoke required. Low lying foggers produce fog that stays low to the ground which is perfect for stage and theatre.
