• L.ights Ou.t N,ortheast Florida is a program that aims to pu,sh 'b,uildin:g and hou:sehold owners in J'ackso:n.viUe, Fl,or:ilda to turn the,:ilr lights off between. 11 P.M. and 5 A.M. durin.g the tw,o bird migratory· seas,ons each year' (Sprin.g and Fall).

• No,ctumally migrating 'birds ·u,se the moon and star:s to na vi.gate from o:n.e place to an.other.

• Artificial light, mainly pl'lo,min.ent in inner ... city are.as w:ilth. lar,ge skyscrapers, attracts m.ilgratin:g bir'd,s)"

causing them to fly into the,se deadly ar·e,as. At night,. it is very difficult for' b·ir'd,s to .see their' surroundings .. so bird,s caught in the :ilnner ... city ,o,ften fly into artificially lit buildings, r·e-.sulting in fatal co:nsequ,ence,,s.

·Each ·y·ear, about one bi11:ion birds die from either colliding into artificially, lit buil.ding;s

or from exhaustion.
