New Standard BSEN62305-4 1st Sept 2008 & 17th Edition Wiring Regs Amendments 1st Jan 2012.
This new standard replaced BS6651 on the above date, it is now mandatory to fit a lightning current arrester on main incoming panels which are situated in buildings with external lightning conductors or fed by an overhead line. This type of arrester is designated as a Type 1, we recommend a combined T1+T2+T3 arrester as this gives additional surge protection for no added cost. The minimum discharge capability for a T1 arrester has to be 50Ka 10/350μs.
Panels or sub-distboards feeding external circuits such as car park lighting, CCTV etc should also have a combined T1+T2+T3 arrester fitted as standard.
An example of a T1+T2+T3 combined arrester is 10651 LED Level 1, 100Ka 10/350μs.

Recently introduced standards put equal importance on protecting the electrical installation and electrical equipment as to the building itself.
Modern micro electronic components are very sensitive to overvoltages and because many systems are networked they rely on each other for the system to operate. If one part of the system gets damaged due to lightning or surges, the whole system will not operate. The consequential losses suffered during such events i.e. downtime and lost production, can be very high.
We offer a wealth of experience in helping to decide which product best suits your needs. Our catalogue contains our most popular products however we have many more products and components to suit a range of applications.
For panels and sub boards in buildings without external lightning conductors and fed by underground cables a T2 surge arrester is sufficient. Sub-distribution boards or local control panels more than 10 metres from the main incomer and not feeding external circuits then a Type 2 surge arrester can be used. An example of a T2 surge arrester is Part no SY2-C40X.
Final sub-circuits and sensitive electronic equipment, e.g. fire/burglar panels, PLC’s which are fitted more than 10 metres from the last surge arrester should have a T3 surge arrester fitted at the panel or equipment to be protected. An example of a T3 surge arrester is SY2-D/LED.

Surge Arrester Type 2/3 Compact Type LED Indication
P-3k is a three-phase surge arrester type 2/3 according to EN61643-11 and IEC 61643-1 suitable for use in TNS, TNC and TT systems. These are parallel devices intended for protection of electronic appliances against impulse surge. All varistors are fitted with thermal fuses to prevent short and also permanent overloading.
These units are to be connected as near to the protected appliance as possible, e.g. local control panel, dist board.The right function of P-3k230 devices is indicated by target disconnection of mechanical thermal fuses which react to varistors overheating above c. 120˚C.
